This story unfolds in the pristine lake country of north central Minnesota. A career woman, wife, and mother, Johanna is living well and appears to have a cozy and enviable relationship with her husband Matt. Gradually, over a period of years, she begins to feel alienated from Matt and unsure of where she stands with him. She has a brief encounter with a man at work and finds herself pregnant with her second child. Matt and Johanna’s marriage survives, however, Matt is unaware that he may be raising another man’s child. Years later, with the children grown, Johanna is faced with the news that her one time lover, Sheldon, has been diagnosed with Huntington’s disease. How she handles this knowledge and copes with the possibility this disease may be passed on to her daughter and grandchildren push her towards making heart breaking but necessary choices. This is a story about marriage, family, and the pain and promise that sometimes comes with long term relationships. This novel is recommended for adult readers.
