Nike Chillemi creates a charming village atmosphere with a chillingly dark underside. Set in 1946 in the fictional Long Island village of Sanctuary Point, Burning Hearts is full of characters who will claim your heart - and others you'll love to hate. Yeah, hate isn't a good emotion for Christians. Yet it's so common in our lives, now and in the post-WWII era of this novel.

Erica's employer/mentor/friend, Ada, dies in a tragic house fire in the first chapter. Nothing like diving right into the action! The story's hero, Lorne, tries to save Ada but he's just too late. Now Erica struggles with the fear that someone in her quaint seaside village could hate Ada enough to murder her. At the same time, Lorne battles his own emotional demons: he was too late to save Ada, unable to save his buddy during the war...can he possibly hope to keep Erica safe? If she'll even trust him after suspicion falls on him.

The mystery unravels at a pace that keeps pages turning. Interwoven into the suspense is a touching romance as Erica and Lorne step toward falling in love. Burning Hearts also has a good spiritual message that is wrapped inside true-to-life reactions, emotions, and feelings. No preaching here!

The secondary characters in Burning Hearts are written with as much care and attention to authenticity as the main characters. It was easy for me to feel like I was right there in Sanctuary Point as each scene unfolds. In my opinion, that's the mark of a great book.

I had encountered the author for several years on Facebook and various Christian sites, and I've always been intrigued by her comments. So I purchased the book and found myself turning pages until I'd read right through it. I was transported to the 1940s and got a good chuckle from the slang of the era. It feels like a classic suspense with a dose of romance and humor. There is a deeper element to this novel as the heroine and hero pursue the killer and face injustice in their small village.

Sanctuary Point, Book One, Burning Hearts by Nike Chillemi
Burning Hearts takes you back to the time when World War II has just ended. You feel you’re there in every scene in Long Island, 1946, sitting in diners, listening to the gum-smacking dialogue of secondary characters, and smelling the aromas of this quaint town with its downtown and uptown people.

The author makes you identify with the main character, Erica Brogna, right down to her need to check that the seams along the backs of her nylons are straight, and what it’s like to walk in her penny loafers.

The hero, Lorne Kincaid, rides into town on a Harley Davidson, and he’s a man bruised emotionally from seeing his buddies die in the war.

Right from page one I really enjoyed this fast—paced murder mystery. Loved all the attention to detail that wasn’t intrusive on the story. It kept me guessing until the very last chapter who the murder was.
Burning Hearts was a delightful, suspenseful romp, and had me rooting for the hero and heroine all the way through.

If you like a good murder mystery, with a sense of non-to-distant history, and a warm romance, then I highly recommend this book.

Burning Hearts is the first book in the ‘Sanctuary Point Series’ by ‘crime fictionista’ Nike Chillemi. The series takes place in a small American town called Sanctuary Point shortly after World War Two has ended. The action begins almost immediately as the heroine, a young seamstress named Erica Brogna, is caught in a house fire. Her friend and employer is also caught in the burning building. Lorne Kincade, a war veteran who is new to town, happens along on his motorcycle and helps rescue Erica’s friend. Unfortunately, the young war widow dies at the hospital. It soon becomes apparent that the woman was murdered and the fire was set on purpose. Thus begins the mystery. Who would want to kill an innocent widow?
As the drama unfolds and various suspects emerge, Erica and Lorne find themselves drawn to one another. Yet their attraction hardly has time to blossom, it seems, as even the ‘heroes’ are not exempt from suspicion – or danger. With lots of twists and turns, Chillemi weaves a tale of intrigue, action, and of course, love. There is also a strong faith element in the book, but it is presented in a very natural, unobtrusive way that seems totally contemporaneous for the times.
One of the things I really appreciated about this book was the authentic tone. Set in the 1940s, the characters react and speak as one would imagine. The dialogue sounds genuine for the period and the descriptions of their clothing, food, pastimes, vehicles, and even the scenery are precise, vivid and well researched, without seeming expository. As well, the characters are very well rounded, with just enough history to make them real. I read book two before reading this one, and although it stood alone quite nicely, I came to appreciate the characters even more after reading book one. I highly recommend Burning Hearts (and Ms. Chillemi’s subsequent books) to those who like a good old fashioned crime story with just enough romance to make it sweet.

Author Nike Chillemi's new sweet historical romance, Sanctuary Point Book One: Burning Hearts released May 15. It's set in Long Island New York, and the hero, Lorne Kincade, rides in on a Harley Davidson and attempts to rescue a woman from a fire. He meets Erica Brogna, and can't shake her from his mind or heart, but someone is out to frame him for the murder of the woman he tried to save. If they can't succeed in framing him, they'll settle for Erica, but he won't let that happen.

The action starts with Chapter One and keeps on going. I don't usually read historical romance novels, since my favorite genre is romantic suspense, but I truly enjoyed this one and wanted to keep reading to see what happened. I loved the way the hero rode in to the rescue on a bike instead of a white horse and turned out to be a true hero in more ways than one. If you're looking for a clean romance, the couple is young and innocent, and the romance has the flavor of sweet, young love that it is. The content of this novel is five-star.

Burning hearts review
Fastpaced, action packed debut novel from Nike chillemi delivers!
Erica brogna is a head strong but lovable character that investigates the death of her beloved friend. Things progress from bad to worse when she finds her friend's house on fire. Braving the flames, she goes in search of her friend only to be stopped moments later by the burning conflagration. What to do? This heroine doesn't run outside to wring her hands, but to find herself a hero. And what a hero he turns out to be!
Lorne Kincaid was just riding through town on his Harley when Erica practically throws herself in front of his bike to capture his attention. Coming to her rescue, he indeed shows himself to be the hero every woman wants - strong yet gentle. Lucky for Erica, he doesn't just swoop into the house to save her friend, but also swoops into her heart as well.

If you love Christian romance novels with action, try this book. I'm sure it'll make an impression!

Book one from the Sanctuary Point series, Nike Chillemi weaves a story around a young woman, in a post WWII era. Erica Brogna walks to work, dreaming of the new dress she plans to design only to discover her employer's place of business  and residence engulfed in flames. She attempts to rescue the woman but is forced to rely on the help of biker  Lorne Kincade,  a veteran who recently moved to the area. Lorne inherited his uncle's home and is in the process of recuperating from his war experience and renovating the house.  Romance is in the air as Erica and Lorne search for the arsonist after Erica's mentor and boss succumbs to her injuries. This book captured me and I highly recommend it. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Don't usually read romantic suspense, but this one had enough action to hold my interest.

I got it as a gift, or a reciprocal gift. I gave Back on Murder to my friend, and she gave me Burning Hearts.

Burning Hearts is written by a woman, but it's a book a man can read and enjoy.

Love and hope rise out of the ashes of tragedy.

Erica and Lorne’s lives come crashing together the morning Erica discovered Ada’s house on fire. Lorne had my admiration from the moment he entered the scene. Without a thought for his own safety, he was willing to run into a burning house to save a woman he didn’t even know. While Lorne was too late to save Ada’s life, his selfless act firmly established him as a hero in my mind. After the initial shock of the tragedy is over, Lorne and Erica find themselves drawn to each other. However, they both had some personal issues to work through before they reached their happy ending.

Erica was a very easy character to like. She deeply cares for her friends and family and will go to great lengths to protect them. She’s also very smart and motivated. She struck me as one of those people who always needs to be doing something. I have a feeling that whatever Erica puts her mind to, she’ll have no trouble accomplishing. Erica is also very resilient. While Ada’s death shook Erica to her core, she came to realize that life goes on and focused her energy into helping find Ada’s murderer.

Despite all Erica’s strengths, she’s in the midst of a crisis of faith. She’d been questioning the validity of her belief in God for a while, but Ada’s death has made her take a hard look at her faith. I loved that Erica’s search for God didn’t come in any hard and fast answers. Instead she found solace in prayer and in her family and friends who formed a tight knit community of believers who were there to listen and support her when she needed them.

Lorne was a true hero from the moment he entered Erica’s life. Not only did I admire his act of bravery, but he was also very caring and tender toward Erica. Like Erica, Lorne has issues with his faith. His life had been marked by tragedy from an early age and the war was just the most recent horror he’d had to endure. Lorne had left God behind him a long time ago, but as the story progressed, Lorne began to realize that God never left him. As with Erica, there were no easy answers to Lorne’s questions. I really liked the fact that Erica’s family and friends are Christians who gently lead by example. Their lives aren’t perfect, but they all have a strong faith and are willing to open their hearts and homes to Lorne.

In the search for Ada’s murder, Erica and Lorne came across plenty of unsavory characters. They each had a main suspect who would certainly have fit the bill. I never thought either of their suspects were the true culprit. I was constantly searching through the secondary characters in an effort to solve the mystery before the story was over. However, I was truly surprised when the murderer was revealed. I won’t spoil the ending, but I must say that I felt like the revelation came out of the blue. My only complaint with this is, when the story ended, I didn’t feel as if I truly understood the killer’s motivation for taking Ada’s life.

One of the things I most enjoyed about the story was the romance between Erica and Lorne. They were attracted to each other almost immediately, but were unwilling to act on it. Erica had just lost her best friend and couldn’t begin to entertain thoughts of romance. Lorne felt he wasn’t worthy of Erica’s affections. However, as the story progressed, the connection between them slowly began to grow. I liked that they never rushed into anything. They went on some lovely dates and really got to know each other. It was a delight to see them excited and full of butterflies at the thought of dancing together, or simply seeing each other again.

I enjoyed reading Burning Hearts. It is an inspirational story full of love and hope. Anyone who loves a good mystery paired with a sweet romance should certainly pick up a copy of Burning Hearts.

There is little defense against the twisted and evil criminals who scheme to murder without motive. Burning Hearts takes us to an historic time shortly after the end of World War II. The crime is a vindictive murder and arson set up to hide the truth.

As we might expect in real life, the young victim, Ada Pinter, has family and friends who are dedicated to watching for her murderer. A talented seamstress and war widow trying to support herself, no one can understand why Ada would be murdered. Would men who had dated her recently be suspect?

A handsome stranger in the community rides by on his Harley just as the fire is discovered. Lorne Kincade, a young veteran whose uncle lived in the close knit community, rushes into the flaming building to bring Ada Pinter out. He's just too late. Then, he's suspected because he's new and the real culprit takes advantage of small chances to turn the blame.

Ada Pinter was mentoring young Erica Brogna and even bequeathed her property to the young woman. Erica is determined to learn the truth about Ada's death and in the process, becomes more acquainted with Kincade.

Nike Chillemi conducts extensive research to make sure she has the lifestyle, professional behaviors and the little things lined up with the times featured in her writing. She takes the reader through different stages in their spiritual lives. The war years have been a strain on the beliefs of many people while others grow spiritually. Without pushing a specific doctrine, the author lets each character come to that deeper understanding that she or he is seeking. No profanity or erotica. Older characters will have appeal for more mature young adult and adult readers.

There are many little things that I recall from a childhood in the era that made this a heartwarming story. While untangling the crime, the author takes us through some of the cultural processes in place during those days. The Burning Hearts characters mirror us, dear reader, in our spiritual situations where we doubt and question while not exercising our faith and think this is wise...only in our dim eyes!

I read this book on my Kindle Fire and enjoyed it a lot. I'm looking forward to others in the series. I will be reviewing Burning Hearts at Amazon and CardinalBluff.com

urning Hearts is much more than what the title implies—romance. It is an arson murder story set in fictional Sanctuary Point, a village on Long Island, New York, during the post World War II era. Readers are swept into this 1940s period by well-researched descriptive prose as debut novelist Nike Chillemi weaves language, foods, businesses, clothes and vehicles to create a vivid step back into the past. This inspirational novel is a guaranteed page-turner, even for readers like myself who normally flee from stories with more than a hint of romance.

Nike loves a good crime mystery as her blog title clearly suggests: Nike Chillemi ~Crime Fictonista. She writes about her purpose on the blog: “Reading, writing, and shooting the breeze about Christian crime fiction, murder mysteries, thrillers, police procedurals, detective stories, and life.” Her current novel reflects this passion.

Erica Brogna, a young clothing designer, finds her friend’s dress shop in flames. Erica vainly tries to rescue her friend and mentor, but is forced outside by heat and flames, finally collapsing across the path of a stranger riding a motorcycle. Lorne Kincade, a troubled war veteran, nearly crashes his bike to avoid hitting Erica. In answer to her pleas for help, he rushes into the burning building to pull out the dying victim, Ada Pinter. Later, police determine an arsonist started the fire. Erica and Lorne are drawn into the investigation—Erica, because of her love for Ada; Lorne, because of his growing attraction for Erica. The search for truth becomes elusive as they find out more than they ever wanted to know about themselves and their community. This suspense-filled story captivates readers until the last page.

Nike has done a good job of creating a vivid 1940s community peopled by believable characters. Erica and her family, a part of the smaller Czechoslovakian community, offer readers a glimpse of traditional ethnic dishes, language and customs which broadens the flavor of the story. Aficionados of history, mystery or romance novels will discover something in this novel to piqué their interest and keep them reading.

Erica Brogna arrives at Ada’s Fabric Shoppe, only to find it on fire. She attempts to save Ada, but finding herself unable to accomplish the goal, she runs outside to wave down help.

Lorne Kinkade was out cruising on his Harley when he smelled smoke and saw a young woman frantically waving for help. Upon arriving, Erica informs Lorne that Ada is still in the house. He goes in to rescue her and is successful, though she is badly burned on her face and arm.

Erica, Lorne and Ada end up at the Memorial Hospital, where Erica and Lorne are treated and released. Ada was in surgery, but subsequently did not survive her injuries.

Nike Chillemi, in Burning Hearts, creates a genuine story line of a senseless, selfish arson/murder, with characters that are personal, personable, cruel, and real. The conversations seemed so natural and true for the circumstances, the delightful romance was respectful for the time era (1946), the police action/non-action seemed appropriate in the days of family powers ruling, and the suspense and mystery, though slow compared to today’s action, was timely and kept my attention. Nike kept me guessing who the killer/arsonist was throughout the whole book, down to the last few pages. And even then the action was powerful, dangerous and alarming. Emotions were palpable! Definitely moved me.

For her first novel, Nike did an outstanding job of keeping the storyline moving with all the different characters, crimes, and social and daily activities. Her descriptive language gave you a sense of the era, surrounding scenery, scenarios, area, and emotions. This aspect made for a very intimate read. Powerfully written with a sense of gentility mixed in. Definitely a 1946-era book. I loved it! Looking forward to her next book!

Nike’s inclusion of the dilemmas of Lorne and Erica’s faith, their anger at God, and their spiritual growth is applicable for people everywhere. We all struggle, but we have a God who is there for us.

I received this e-book through Debra Gaynor of Readers Favorite in exchange for my honest review. No monetary compensation was exchanged.

Author Nike Chillemi’s thriller debut novel is well worth reading. The small town of Sanctuary Point is her post World War II setting. The picturesqueness of its Long Island harbor feels like a character in itself with the author’s excellent descriptions.

Erica Brogna and Lorne Kincade meet most uncharacteristically. A frantic Erica is escaping from her friend’s burning house and hardened war-hero Lorne, riding nearby on his Harley Davidson, leaps to the rescue, but too late to save Ada, Erica’s best friend and dress-designer employer.

When the ashes settle, a surprising friendship develops between Erica and Lorne, but they’ve more questions than answers about the fire. Could the fire have been more than an accident? And if so, who would have started such an inferno? Ms. Chillemi quickly pulls the reader into the story, builds her plot nicely with plenty of surprising action and keeps ‘who done it’ a secret to the end.

I enjoyed the characters and the setting very much. This is a historical novel and is authentic in its 1940s touches, even down to the lime-green Jell-O with pears. I would like to have seen a flaw or two in Erica’s nurturing family of parents and brother. It would have made them a little more believable.

Also, the relationship between Erica and Lorne seemed to have too many starts and stops, especially when they really did care for one another, but Lorne, so accomplished in his role as soldier, had to struggle hard to feel worthy of Erica and her family’s love.
I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with Burning Hearts. I look forward to book two.

Erica Brogna has just received her first dream assignment--to design a custom dress for Ada Pinter's dress shop. When she arrives at Ada's, though, she finds the place on fire. Unable to rescue Ada, Erica rushes to find help.

Lorne Kincade is riding his Harley Davidson through town when he sees a beautiful woman running out in the street, waving her arms, and screaming for assistance. After Lorne finds out what is happening, he rushes inside the burning dress shop. He manages to carry Ada out of the building.

After Lorne and Erica arrive at the hospital, Erica worries if Ada will survive. Not knowing why, Erica is drawn to the handsome stranger who saved her employer. She feels safe in his presence.

When the Nassau County Fire Inspector shows up, telling Erica he suspects arson, Erica wonders who would want to hurt Ada, especially since they live in such a small village. To make matters worse, Lorne is one of the prime suspects.

Lorne wonders what he's gotten himself into this time. He considers hopping on his motorcycle and leaving the way he came in, but what if he's been sent to help Erica? Not only that, Erica's different than any other woman he's met.

Filled with great word imagery, warm characters, and suspense, this author has penned a story that will capture the readers' attention to the very end.

I highly recommend this book.

"Burning Hearts" drew me slowly in. At first I wasn't sure what to think about the characters. It had been so long since I'd read an historical novel. In my head I was still in contemporary times, but after the first few pages I was hooked.
I love how Ms. Chillemi is so precise with details of the 1940's--the type of food, clothing, cars, even attitudes, or the way people spoke.
But there is a definite dark thread running through the story even in this "kinder, gentler" era, with an arsonist/murderer threatening to destroy more lives and wreak vengeance on anyone he feels has betrayed him.
Erika and Lorne are perfect as the loner war hero, and young woman he can't help falling for. Their innocent relationship reminded me a bit of an old Grace LIvingston HIll novel, but without the simplistic message.
If you like to feel as though you've fallen into a different era, want to really connect with your characters, and love a good suspense story, you will definitely enjoy "Burning Hearts."

While crime fiction is not my usual genre, I was totally swept up in Nike Chillemi’s debut fiction novel, Burning Hearts (Sanctuary Point Book One). It was a gripping murder mystery that left me wondering “Who dunnit” right up until the last chapters.
But besides the mystery and romance of her story, Chillemi’s writing was filled with the delightful lingo, culture, and trends of the post WWII era. Her characters were well developed, especially the war veteran protagonist who tries to be a hero only to end up as a suspect. There are so many great characters in this intriguing book that proves a book written with a Christian worldview can be intense without overstepping a readers’ conservative sensibilities.
The most refreshing part was her realistic thread of faith lost and faith renewed throughout the story. Very believable as a story of the age-old dilemma of good vs. evil. A well-written tale that is well worth your time.

This novel does a great job pulling you into its world and wrapping you up in its mystery. Exciting and tense, you get absorbed into the story, trying to unravel the mystery before it's too late. The characters were colorful and warm. Erica is a strong, budding young woman in an age where women are dealing with a world with few men. Lorne is a tarnished war veteran, unsure of his worth and his place. Together they fall sweetly in love. Their interaction was wonderful as were the other characters in the town. Everything was well researched and you felt like you really had traveled back in time to this little town suffering the effects of the war. The Christian angle was apparent but not overwhelming - well written. This is one I would recommend.

My Review:
This book had some many things that I loved to read about. Love, speed... a HARLEY, mystery, real life, and even thou Erica Brogna was loved growing up she still finds herself doubting not only herself but everyone else.

Author Nike Chillemi writing is amazing. Her style of taking you back into the past and bringing out interesting facts all the while keeping you on the edge of your seat with mystery and intrique is awesome.

The characters with in the pages are so well rounded and they pull you right into their lives.

A must read. And I am looking forward to reading more of author Nike Chillemi's work.

So due to the above, I am giving this book a Breath of Life ratings of:

Five Clock Rating!!!

I decided to read this novel after following the author on some Goodreads posts. I liked it. I felt pulled into the setting of the book, post-WW2 NY, and was impressed by the details interspersed through the story of that time period. I would have enjoyed a bit more development of the suspects (including the killer). But of course, I am always drawn to the villain's motivations as much as the hero/heroine's, so not sure how much that means to others. The central characters were very likable, and I found myself cheering for them. The spiritual aspect of the novel was for the most part subtle and did not take center stage--as it shouldn't in this type of crime novel. In all, I found it to be an enjoyable read.

Burning Hearts was fun to read. Set in the forties, the main character Erica finds her friend and mentor's house ablaze with her in it. In comes war hero Lorne to the rescue on his oh so hot Harley Davidson.

The house burning isn't the only thing on fire when sparks fly between Erica and Lorne. But when the investigators conclude it's been arson, there are some who suspect Lorne of the crime.

Nike's characters are fun and believable. I felt like I was back in the forties, wearing pants for the first time with Erica. I could hear the rumble of the Harley and think, "Come by and pick me up, Lorne!"

I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the rest in this series.

I loved this book, but never get what I could reading on computer. If I had a reader or a book in hand. I would have probably liked it so well and given 5 stars, but I have found sitting at computer skews my mind and I do not enjoy as well so hard to divulge what I really thought. The book is lighthearted cute mystery and romance set in an era I have not read much of 1940's. the characters are likable and warm. This book is plain fun, but also has a slight edge to it that keeps it moving. If I win or get a reader I will definitely buy her new one. And it will most likely get a 5. ( I love the cover of that one. Gorgeous.) Good Job Nike. Going to tell the cozy group about these.

I had forgotten what a delight it is to escape into a past time when it seems that things were so much simpler. I say seems because, of course, things were harder in a different way. The polite cosideration given to women by gentlemen and the close ties of family were so refreshing to read about. I might have to delve deeper into historical mysteries for awhile. The characterization was great.

The plot of the book was well thought out and a mystery to the end. I never would have thought it would end like it did. Anyone who reads it will be in for a treat. Highly recommended.

This was a great read. I warmed up to Erica Brogna immediately. She reminded me of me when I was a girl. She was that real.

And Lorne Kincaid. What a guy. He's a real hero.

I don't want to give anything away, but the story starts with arson andmurder and is fast paced to catch a demented killer.

A very sweet romance.

Wonderful, Clean mystery. Great plot and story line. Really a heart pounding book. I was thinking that with a mystery so clean that it could not possibly be great. I was so wrong. Reading every book in the series. I was good enough that my teenage daughter loved it too.

A great novel with well-developed characters. The author weaves a wonderfully suspensful story and creates a great location. Looking forward to reading more in the series.
