(1)romance author
Susan Eloise Spaeth was born on 11 December 1946 in Cuthbert, Georgia, USA. She was the eldest daughter of Maggie Eloise Cliatt, a nurse and also journalist, and William Olin Spaeth, a college professor. Her mother was part of the women's liberation movement many years before it became fashionable. Her best friends are her mother and her sister, Dannis Spaeth (Cole), who now has two daughters, Amanda Belle Hofstetter and Maggie and lives in Utah. Susan grew up reading Zane Grey and fell in love with cowboys. Susan is a former newspaper reporter, with sixteen years experience on both daily and weekly newspapers. Since 1972, she has been married to James Kyle and have since settled down in Cornelia, Georgia, where she started to write romance novels. Susan and her husband have one son, Blayne Edward, born in 1980.

She began selling romances in 1979 as Diana Palmer. She also used the pseudonyms Diana Blayne and Katy Currie, and her married name: Susan Kyle. Now, she has over 40 million copies of her books in print, which have been translated and published around the world. She is listed in numerous publications, including Contemporary Authors by Gale Research, Inc., Twentieth Century Romance and Historical Writers by St. James Press, The Writers Directory by St. James Press, the International Who's Who of Authors and Writers by Meirose Press, Ltd., and Love's Leading Ladies by Kathryn Falk. Her awards include seven Waldenbooks national sales awards, four B. Dalton national sales awards, two Bookrak national sales awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award for series storytelling from Romantic Times, several Affaire de Coeur awards, and two regional RWA awards.

Inspired by her husband, who quit a blue-collar manufacturing job to return to school and get his diploma in computer programming, Susan herself went back to college as a day student at the age of 45. In 1995, she graduated summa cum laude from Piedmont College, Demorest, GA, with a major in history and a double minor in archaeology and Spanish. She was named to two honor societies (the Torch Club and Alpha Chi), and was named to the National Dean's List. In addition to her writing projects, she is currently working on her master's degree in history at California State University. She hopes to specialize in Native American studies. She is a member of the Native American Rights Fund, the American Museum of Natural History, the National Cattlemen's Association, the Archaeological Institute of Amenca, the Planetary Society, The Georgia Conservancy, the Georgia Sheriff's Association, and numerous conservation and charitable organizations. Her hobbies include gardening, archaeology, anthropology, iguanas, astronomy and music.

In 1998, her husband retired from his own computer business and now pursues skeet shooting medals in local, state, national and international competition. They love riding around and looking at the countryside, watching sci-fi on TV and at the movies, just talking and eating out.

Step-cousins in love! Hero is 31, heroine is 21 and they both act like they're 14 and discovering sex for the first time. This is literally true for the heroine who actually went to college for four years and learned nothing about anything from what I can tell.

She does know about first base* And the hero is willing to take her to second base** while sitting in a truck at a drive-in movie, at the office on the ranch, in his private plane - but there's no paradise by the dashboard light beyond that.

Hero seems like he is pursuing the heroine, but then he pulls back. Heroine pretends she doesn't care and OMG - just pass a note in gym class:

Do you like me?

___yes

___no

There's a sub-plot with the hero's brother wanting to be race car driver and not work on the ranch. He manages to interfere with the hero's slow-walk seduction of the clueless heroine several times.

The hero actually spells out his seduction technique for the heroine with some cringey dialogue that's supposed be sexy talk. I believe the hero calls it "verbalizing."

They discuss *French kissing and the delights of **above the waist nudity and *gasp* nipple stimulation.

He also explains how one method of birth control is uncomfortable and the other is unreliable. (And there are no other methods, obv)

I haven't heard conversations like this since I was in jr. high. Ah, memories. I think I'll watch Welcome Back Kotter and dot Clearisil all over my face to really bring back the awkwardness.

“Champagne Girl” is the story of Matt and Catherine.
Matt and Catherine are step siblings who have always been on the odds. Matt has always looked out for Catherine, but refuses to let her spread out her wings. When she gets a job in NY, she tries to convince him to leave but he sets his seductive charm on..
We have a typical DP story with an innocent virgin, a tortured hero, loads of upper body lovemaking and breast rubbing on hairy chests, smoking, angst and HEA.
What pleasantly surprised me was that the hero wasn’t a douche, genuinely cared for the heroine and their banter was hilarious.
Loved this one!

Wow Matt is not a typical Diana Palmer hero. He is so sweet and loving and romantic and so obviously in love with Kit. Kit on the other hand is an idiot. She was funny but too over the top stupid.

This book follows the classic Diana Palmer formula: older man who loudly protests marriage, coming-of-age virgin he has known and desired for years, she distrusts his advances/seduction, neither will admit they love each other, he admits he loves her and she agrees to marry him.

But as with every Palmer story, there are differences and nuances... In this story, he was guardian over her finances and her step-cousin. There was quite a rivalry going between the hero, Matt, and his younger brother, Hal. Hal interferes and almost submarines the new relationship between Matt and Catherine. Unlike many Palmer heroes, Matt is not verbally abusive toward Catherine.

There is a fun moment at the end when Catherine finally meets the 'other woman' that Matt has been seeing. Very different from the cat fight I was expecting...

All in all, a good afternoon's read and worthy of the reissue it was given 11 years after it was first published. The image above is from that reissue. The original is a lavender-bordered Silhouette Romance with a couple (what else?) on the cover.

Loved the Hero, the Heroine was Clueless

THE STORY: Catherine Blake has decided to finally leave her family ranch in order to take a public relations job in New York City. She also wants to get away from her step cousin Matt Kincaid who she has loved for years. Matt seems to have changed his behavior towards her and Catherine doesn't understand why.

OPINION: Matt is clearly in love with Catherine from the beginning. Unlike most Diana Palmer books, he is not a cynical woman hater. Instead, he treats her incredibly well and tries to do what she demands. Catherine, on the other hand, is increasingly annoying. She deliberately misunderstands Matt and does immature things to get back at him. There is much I like about this book. It is well written and doesn't feel rushed for such a short book. When Catherine is not being stupid, she and Matt have a sweet relationship. I adored Matt (he is one of the nicest Palmer heroes) and when Catherine is not being stupid, I like them as a couple.

WORTH MENTIONING: This was a category romance first published in the 1980s so it is somewhat dated and also short.

FINAL DECISION: I liked this book overall and thought that the writing and hero were strong. I was seriously annoyed with the heroine, however. I couldn't decide if she was clueless or just immature.

CONNECTED BOOKS: CHAMPAGNE GIRL is a standalone book.

STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars on the strength of the hero.

The pace is a little different from her previous books. Kit is the typical unawakened virgin but she wasn't as clueless. She also made use of her feminine wiles to turn the tables on him. Matt flexes his muscle a bit and turns the pressure on. The book is more of a light read Both characters equally had some sense of humor and wit. I enjoyed the scene in bed where they get caught, and again true to the whole tempo of the book it didn't really escalate to this epic drama.

The book didn't have the type of climax (angst and drama) I was hoping for, but a pleasant read.

Not exactly my favorite but I did enjoyed reading it. Very typical of Diana Palmer but if you're a fan of her since the beginning, you'll love it.

Matt's a bit annoying but then again, he loves Catherine—or Kit secretly.

Good one.

Champagne girl is an interesting dynamic

Both characters are so afraid of losing the other so they do not express how they truly feel until the end.

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 4
Performance – 4
Story – 4

Champagne Girl:

I have to start out by saying that this book was originally published in July of 1997 so it is quite a bit dated by now, but I knew that going in. So, I’m not really going to comment on all of the things that would be considered terribly sexist by current standards.

Matt is a true alpha male and Catherine is a pretty independent female (for the time this book was written). The book blurb says he’s Catherine’s stepbrother but the book says he’s a stepcousin.

This book was a just a bit over-the-top for me, even allowing for when it was written. Some of the things that Matt says and does were just a little too much. I suspect that is due to my age; if I had read this back when it was published, I probably would have felt differently.

I still enjoyed listening to this. Todd McLaren’s voice is pretty dreamy – until it comes to his female voices. I’ve listened to several books where a male narrator does a very credible job with female voices but Todd, not so much. Again, I knew this going in as I’ve listened to several of Diana Palmer’s books that he’s read. The good outweighs the bad and keeps me coming back for more.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

This is just my second time reading Diana Palmer, and this one, from 1986, didn't go over as well for me as the first one I read, THE HUMBUG MAN, which I absolutely adored. That one was published around the same time, and it's been seven years since I read it so I could be remembering wrong but I think this one was a little racier. Which I'm not against, but those scenes were so prevalent they seem to take up half the book. The heroine is twenty-one, and the hero I think is maybe thirty-two or so, and while I've read plenty category romances over the years that featured a similar age gap it just seemed almost a little uncomfortable. Maybe because they are also step-cousins, and the hero says at one point he's waited two years for her to notice him as a man and not just her step-cousin.

But putting all that aside, there was lots of lovely banter that made me smile and at times laugh, so I bumped my rating up a star in appreciation of that. And I will definitely read more of Ms. Palmer.

Love at it's best

Never fails to leave you wanting more books but it's still great to find the ones I get never a dull moment with all the hunky gentlemen cowboys when you're a Texas gal you dream about one coming and lassoing you up and off to an amazingly romantic relationship forever. That's why I read your books makes me dream sweet dreams about my husband even if he won't ride and prefers city life cowboys come in all sizes and as long as they love the south we can live anywhere he wants. Great story didn't even try to stop it's a waste of time so thank you for such superb images of true cowboys. Carmen

It was ok. I liked that the hero was celibate for 2 years (ever since he realized he had feelings for heroine). He did however date other woman (window dressing).

I liked that the hero wasn't a jerk in the sense that he wasn't verbally abusive like most other D Palmer heroes. However he still deliberately made the heroine believe he was dating another woman. I liked that he wasn't actually dating the other woman and that she was a married mother that he had a work project with.

Heroine was kind of annoying, I hated the makeover with her personality transplant and the over the top teasing of hero and his brother. Np.

I purchased the book: Champagne Girl by Diana Palmer, and this review was given freely.
Jealousy, the interference of her cousin Hal, and an escalating attraction make this a quick-read rocky romance with lots of steamy foreplay.
New Journalism college graduate Catherine Blake returns to her uncle's Texas ranch and her hometown of Comanche Flats, looking forward to a job in New York and leaving her unrequited love for her at times condescending and controlling stepcousin, Matthew Dane Kincaid, behind.

This is not my favorite this story DP has done so much better several other times... I know she can write this type of plot better & has... I read this book over a period of months & when I went to finish it I had a hard time remembering anything I had read up to that point! It was cute & a fun read but I have read soooo much DP this just let me down... Not every book is a winner.

The storyline is very interesting but the narration was so cringy and awkward.
I have read two books so far by Diana Palmer and both had the same plot.

. Older man/Younger woman Romance
. Heroines want to get away from hometime
. Huge miscommunication issues with hero and Heroine
. Virgin Heroine worship

Overall this story is meh!😐

Niedawno ukończyłam lekturę krótkiej opowieści autorstwa Diany Palmer pt. „Buntowniczka”.
Jest to bardzo lekka książka, a właśnie takiej w obecnym czasie potrzebowałam.
Jakie zrobiła na mnie wrażenie?
Zapraszam do zapoznania się z moją opinią…

I have read this book over and over again. It is my comfort book. My first romance novel as well when I started to become really interested in reading. It might seem plain and simple to some but for me it will always be my comfort book.

Champagne Girl

She loved him and wanted him for so long but he kept her at a distance with teasing and dating other women. It was a lengthy process waiting for her to grow up and notice how much he actually wanted her for good and always.

Jeg hygger mig meget når jeg læser de mega romantiske fortællinger fra Diana Palmer. Ganske utroværdige og kvindeundertrykkende, men skidt pyt. Kvinderne er smukke og mændene er store, flotte og med temperament. What's not to like!

Sweet book! Just the right amount of angst! The hero doesn’t come off as a total jerk as in so many DP books! The heroine is young and sometimes immature butt likeable. They never get below the belt but do have several steamy make out sessions! Definitely a keeper!

Took the Champagne Girl awhile to realize how much he loved her!

Nobody writes a better story about the West like Diana Palmer! I've read many of her stories but this one is one that keeps you hanging until the end! Great read as always!!

Diana Palmer, mi pequeño placer culpable.

Hubo un momento en el que el comportamiendo de ella resulta de lo más infantil pero por lo demás está bien, típica historia de la autora.
