I had just done a re-read Lawless (No, I don't know why), and the heroine in Renegade is the manipulative evil woman in the Lawless. She was just out and out mean to the heroine. DP started the rehabilitation process in that one. It didn't work for me then, and it doesn't work now.
As so many other reviewers said, giving her a tragic backstory and tragic current events (sexual abuse, rape, miscarrying) doesn't really make her any more likable. Even worse, Tippy and Cash are kind of boring.

At the end of the day this rehabilitation of the OW from Lawless was less than convincing.
Heroine had a lot to answer for in her treatment of the h from Lawless. So this is how DP handled it:
Gave her a horrible backstory:
Repeatedly raped at age 12 by her mother’s boyfriend. Her mother allowed it. Rescued her young half-brother from abuse. Lived with a closeted gay man for protection. Flaunted a man-eater reputation as a defense and as her livelihood. First as a model and then as an actress.
Gave her new trauma on the page:
Had hero seduce and then reject her.
Had her lose her unborn child.
Had hero believe she miscarried on purpose.
Had her brother kidnapped.
Had her switch with her brother and then beat up by her mother’s boyfriend.
Had her confront two old ladies who were gossiping about her.
Had her do heroic things:
Reminded the reader that she helped heroine in Lawless.
Hit the missing kidnapper with a frying pan
Had her mention the heroine from Lawless a lot. Regret, etc . . .
Did it work? Was she rehabilitated? Not really? Nothing in her backstory explains why she would take an expensive ring from the financially pressed hero in Lawless. Or why she would be so mean to the heroine. To me, this is a whole new character and DP was re-writing history.
What about hero?
He was this exotic creature in the run up to this story and in this story he was just . . . bland.
Heroine’s half brother did not act or talk like a ten year-old boy. Comforting the hero about his sister’s miscarriage was ridiculous characterization.

Those who know me know that I dislike this heroine.
In Judd and Cristabel's book she was a very selfish and cruel bitch. I think nothing justifies her having behaved that way and she ended up on my shit list. #TeamCristabel
I think a person who has suffered something traumatic should be more empathetic.
When she had Judd buy that ring for her and rubbed it in Cristabel's face, she showed her real character.
As always in the author's books our hero has a traumatic past and does not want to fall in love at all. He even was not so ogre with our heroine. I kept expecting some cruelty from him, but nothing happened.
I have noticed in every author's book that the excuse of all heroes to have sex with heroine is due to a long dry spell. That's why they succumb to the charms or lack of them of our heroine.
She supposedly redeemed herself and fell on the graces of the city's residents, but I did not buy it.

I'm not sure why I only gave this 3.5 stars the first time around. I've read it twice more since then and I'm seriously tempted to give it five stars. I think maybe my opinion the first time was affected by the fact that I hadn't read Lawless yet, which is the book that precedes this one and the two are very connected. If you just read Renegade you miss a lot of back story and character nuances. So I'm guessing that the first time I read the story, I felt like I was missing something having not read Lawless. But the other two times I had and I loved the book a lot those times.
Renegade picks up where Lawless ends and develops the relationship between Jacobsville police chief Cash Grier and model/actress Tippy Moore. The two met in the previous book and Cash took an immediate disliking of her. A model had wrecked his parents marriage and ruined his childhood. But Cash eventually realizes that Tippy is nothing like she seems.
So he visits her in New York and learns a lot about why she is the way she is. As much as he is attracted to her, he is afraid of a relationship developing. The people he loves have always let him down. But he can't seem to stay away from her. Tippy feels the same way. She's almost never trusts men, but Cash makes her feels things she's never felt before. Cash lets his fears chase him away and a misunderstanding almost keeps her permanently away. But when Tippy and her young brother are in danger, Cash takes charge and realizes maybe a relationship isn't such a bad thing. Now he just has to convince Tippy to forgive him.
Cash is probably my favorite Diana Palmer heroes, and a favorite hero in general. There's just something about him that's really appealing. A stoic outsider with a kind heart and hidden vulnerabilities. I loved the scenes where he was claiming ownership of Judd and Crissy's daughter. Those cracked me up. And yeah, he has some borderline asshole moments in this book, but they were ones that you could understand. He's been hurt badly in the past and doesn't trust easily. So maybe he was a little harsh at times, but I could see where it was coming from.
I found Tippy surprisingly likable. After the way she was in the beginning of Lawless, it's hard to imagine that she could be a workable heroine. But Palmer does a great job fleshing out her character and making readers understand why she acted the way she did before. She ends up being a rather admirable heroine. And that thing with the iron skillet...that's just great. I loved that scene. And I like how Palmer has referred to that in later books. Great sense of continuity.
Also surprising about this book is that strays a bit from Palmer's usual formula writing. When I read this book, it doesn't make me think of any of her other books. Which is a good thing. I thought the storyline fit well with the characters. It's got a little bit of suspense, lots of emotional drama, and a great romance. I did notice a few inconsistencies in details, but I could mostly ignore them.
This is a book I think Palmer fans will enjoy. But I'd definitely recommend reading Lawless first. It really helps in understanding the characters in this book.

I just adore these Long Tall Texans. Plus Diana Plamer just has a way with making amazing memorable characters & storylines.
Now it is sexy Police Chief Cash's turn to feel Cupid's arrow & go down in a blaze of love. He is not too impressed with gorgeous movie star Tippy until he digs a little deeper...and finds her sweet little brother & a woman in need of rescue, The Cash Way.
Tippy has some dark secrets in her past that leave her uneasy around dominating men. So she has a lot to fear from Cash. Getting beneath his tough hide shows her ruthless men can also be extremely caring & trustworthy.
These Long Tall Texans always hide some amazingly dark, dangerous past that hides a sweet caring side. You just want them all!

I have to preface my review by saying two things:
A - I loved Lawless
B - I really wanted to like this book
So there it is. I was really disappointed in this book, and I know why. I loved Lawless and I loved Cash Grier in that book. I also *loathed* Tippy. And unfortunately, no matter how had I tried, that loathing carried over. I also didn't feel like Cash was the same person as he was in Lawless. He just felt somewhat different, in my opinion. That's not to say I didn't like him in this one - I did, just not in the same way.

I didn’t know what to expect. Cash was my favorite hero in Lawless, Tippy was a real b**ch, mean and evil to Cristabel without reason.
DP tried the sympathetic card to rehab the h. She didn’t succeed.
The h was raped when she was 12 by her stepfather, her mother is a drunken ho and she saved her little brother from that dysfunctional family.
She and the hero had some very entertaining meetings in Lawless where he slut shamed her and insulted her deservingly. I hoped there would be some in this book, but it seems they already have solved all their issues and are good friends.
He is fond of he little brother and is attracted to her, they have a ons where there’s icky sex and he asks her repeatedly for a baby. And this should be exciting. When you are having wild sex for the first time with a partner and he tells you repeatedly that he wants to make you pregnant. Really????
The best part is that immediately afterwards he is sorry he ever touched her because he doesn’t want to marry at all. What? Why? Is this the same Cash as in Lawless, where he wanted to marry Chrissy and be a father of her baby???
So the heroine is left alone and preggar and goes back to her movie where she has to make some stunts (!!!) and loses her baby. The press make it look like she didn’t want her child and the hero believes every word. Then DP, to add some misfortune to the heroine, makes the evil stepfather kidnap her brother so she can trade herself with him and be beaten and abused some more. Those things usually brings sympathy. I was only upset . I don’t think that much more violence is useful in a romance. It can only be upsetting. The heroine being raped, abused, losing her child is not romantic and doesn’t amend her awful behavior in her previous book. It is useless. She should have changed her inner self and maybe we readers could have seen her differently. All this abuse and cruelty were unnecessary and meaningless.
I didn’t like the book.
-Cash is not the hero we saw in the previous book
-the fact that both hero and heroine had a traumatic past doesn’t mean they are the perfect couple. I preferred Cash with Chrissy because she was so sweet and tempered and he was so sweet with her
-so much abuse couldn’t make the heroine a better character
-she results to be selfish and unable to take care of her and her baby when she risks and loses her baby for her job
- I didn’t feel so much love or passion between them, even if she was more beautiful than Chrissy I felt that Cash’s feelings were not to deep
- eventually the lil stepbro was my favorite character
- the sex was weird the first time, with him telling her he wanted to make her pregnant…
So no, this book was not for me, it was a chore to end it. Pity. Cash could be so much more.

Wow very unusual for a DP book. Tippy is not your typical DP heroine. She is a Hollywood starlet, bitter, cynical and almost an alcoholic. Cash is a kind, honorable hero, not cruel at all. He is so protective of Tippy and her younger brother and helped them turn their life around. Admirable hero! Gotta love a dangerous but gentle, caring man!

The 3-star reading slump I've been for the past 10 books or so is real...The hero & heroine of this book were the other woman/man in "Lawless". Both were scarred from their pasts. The heroine, Tippy (what kind of name is that?), was very cruel to Cristabel in "Lawless", but it had been over a year since I read that book, so it was okay for me.
What I liked the most about this book was that they had a lot of meaningful conversations where they talked a lot about their pasts. A lot of books fail to have this, so I really appreciated that. I'm not sure why, but the sex scenes in this book failed to excite me in any way, so the conversation was even more of a must.
There was definitely drama, but it was interesting. I felt bad for Tippy with all the erroneous, hurtful tabloids written about her. She sort of fell into modeling and later acting, but it never seemed like she was passionate about either, so I wasn't surprised in the end when she was probably going to give it up. However, I didn't like the author's message about that, how a famous woman should give up a successful career when she settles down with a husband and child.
I'm going to check if their daughter (her name was also weird...Tristina Cristabel seems repetitive) has a book because I would be down to read that. Or Tippy's brother Rory.
Age gap of 12 years, but Tippy is 26, so it's not a big deal or addressed afterwards in the story.

Menceritakan tentang Cash Grier, kepala polisi Jacobsville dan Tippy Moore, model ganti haluan jadi artis yang dijuluki "Kunang-Kunang Georgia" , yang sudah kita kenal tentunya dari cerita
Cash menyadari bahwa Tippy tak seperti yang terlihat, dia bukanlah model yang suka menggoda laki-laki lain (baca: Judd Dunn, GEBLEK no 2 di novel DP :)) ), Sebaliknya Tipy adalah pribadi yang rapuh dan halus,dan masa lalunya juga sama kelamnya dengan Cash.
Cash bertemu dengan Tippy dan adiknya Rory di New York, untuk merayakan Natal. Setelah malam yang penuh gairah antara Cash yang ga bisa nahan diri dan Tippy yang di luar dugaan, bisa dibilang minim pengalaman masalah laki-laki, Cash berusaha menghindari Tippy dan kembali ke Jacobsville. Cash Grier juga tak terlalu menyebalkan, tapi yang mengejutkan adalah kepribadian Tippy yang berubah 180 derajat, dari seorang cewe seductress di Lawless, menjadi wanita yang rapuh, tapi juga penuh pengertian, pemberani dan membantu Cash mengatasi masa lalunya.
Penduduk Jacobsville sangat adorable, dan aku tak sabar untk membaca kisah2 penduduk Jacobsville lainnya.
Dan keluhanku masih sama, buku ini tipis, tapi harganya MUAHAAAALLLL!!! >:(

This story had its exciting parts but I really disliked the hero. He took anti-commitment to nastiness that turned me off. He said sorry with surface atonement and the heroine just followed along like he had done nothing wrong. I almost gave up on the book but skimmed and finished. Police chief Cash takes time off to visit an enemy turned friend, actress Tippy.

Do not care how nice Tippy has suddenly become, I am not buying it! I remember her from the Judd’s Book, a woman who absolutely relishes in another woman’s agony does not suddenly become a good person. I also saw what Cash really thought of her, now he loves her? Please! She does not deserve a a guy like Cash!

I had three major problems with this book, in fact the only reason I kept reading was because I hoped it would get better:
1) I don't know about the rest of the world but being raped at 12 by your druggie mother's boyfriend (Tippy) versus killing for the government and being sent to military school because you dislike the stepmom your dad cheated on your mother with(Cash), comes out pretty equal. and there's definitely no way that military school is worse than being raped. But apparently both Tippy and Cash agree at some point that one is worse than the other, which is plain ridiculous. It just made Cash seem conceited.
2) My second problem which isn't as bad is that, nearly every time someone said something remotely funny, other people would "burst out laughing." It was annoying, and something I was told to avoid in school, so why should a published reader not do the same.
3) Finally the ending of the book, I knew getting into it that it would most likely be a happy ending, but this was overdone. My problem wasn't that they got together, it was that suddenly Tippy and Rory's mother was sorry for what she'd done, was dying, and in rehab. There could've been some realism, I certainly never expected a happy ending with their mother, and it was an almost out of the blue moment I didn't need.

4 stars only because I'm in love with Cash Grier.
Cash, chief captain of Jacobsville, is having a slight buzz with Tippy Moore, Hollywood actress. And the buzz getting stronger and stronger along they spent time together. But something bad happen and Tippy betray him. What will happen next? Is it true that Tippy betray him?
I purchased this book right after I read Lawless. Mostly because I already thrilled with Cash & Tippy's romance. And just like what I expected, I loved it!
But, one thing that bothers me, is Rory. Tipy's younger brother. Miss Palmer's kind of failed to describe him as a 9 year old kid. He sounded more like an adult. No matter the excuses like "older than his age" is followed, it just didn't right.
But overall, I loved it. :)

Membaca buku author ini membutuhkan energi kesabaran utk tidak "menguras otak yg berbasis logika". Walau Cash dan Tippy ini cooooo... suuuuitttt... tapi banyaknya adegan gak logis yg bertebaran, malah bikin saya ilfil.
Cash Grier adalah Kepala Polisi di Jacobsville. Cash gandrung banget dgn Tippy Moore, aktris Hollywood yg gak punya duit (alasannya duitnya habis buat membiayai sekolah adiknya lain ayah, Rory. Baiklah anggap aja masih logis). Cash dan Tippy sudah langsung bertukar cerita masa lalu masing-masing (agak aneh tapi ya sudahlah, toh banyak orang tipe ngembeeerr). Lalu mereka tidur bersama dan Tippy hamil tapi hubungan mereka yg mendadak buruk membuat Tippy urung memberitahukan dirinya hamil. Hingga kecelakaan syuting membuat Cash marah krn tahu kabar ini dari tabloid. Blm usai ini, Tippy diperas utk menebus adiknya yg diculik, Tippy berusaha menghubungi Cash utk minta tolong tapi malah dibentak dan tidak dipedulikan. Berhubung si Tippy ini aktris kere, Tippy ada ide konyol yaitu mengganti dirinya sbg sandera (WTH, ini ide absurd dan paling tolol). Tapi ada Cash sbg si Pangeran yg membebaskan Tippy yg terluka dan gegar otak (saya juga gegar otak di bagian logika saya).
Setelah itu plot cerita menurun dan cuma cerita membosankan dan gak masuk akal macam Tippy yg flirting Cash utk PDA (Public Display Affection), sekaratnya emaknya Tippy yg dibenci dua saudara ini sekaligus pengungkapan jatidiri bapak kandung Rory yg scr ajaib tiba-tiba muncul dsb. Males dah bikin listnya. Intinya sih kalau kalian baca ini tanpa banyak menggunakan logika sih fine-fine aja dgn segala lebay dan noraknya. Tapi bisa jadi "gegar" kalau sebaliknya. Makanya kelarin buku ini lumayan lama juga.

I wasn't very sure of how I would rate this book since there were some pretty WEIRD moments in it, but after thoughtful consideration I think it deserves 4 stars since it was entertaining, had lots of LMAO moments and I loved some of the sexxxy scenes ;)

ternyata, Cash tidak 'sebaik' di Lawless dan Tippy tidak seburuk yg ak kira..
pokoknya kliatan deh asli nya cash ma tippy disini...
cash & tippy, masing2 punya trauma masa lalu yang menyakitkan. Cash blm bisa ngelupain perkawinannya dulu jadi bikin dy agak sedikit tertutup ma perempuan terkecuali dengan crissy (baca LAWLESS, cash amat sangat perhatian dg crissy)
klo tippy, orangnya beneran tegar malah terkesan pasrah, sempet kesel sih ma tippy di LAWLESS tp klo udh baca RENEGADE ini, pasti berubah pandangan & simpatik ma tippy, malahan ak suka ma karakternya dy disini (RENEGADE)
arrrgghhh yang bikin kesel ma cash,waktu dy nyuekin tippy gara2 salah paham dan kebetulan skali dy msi rada trauma gtuu ma masa lalu...(ugh! rasanya mw dilempar pke granat ni orang)
padahal dy juga salah atuhh...eh maen salahin tippy aja, trus dicuekin pulaaa---- sedih, tippy minta tolong malah ditutup telponnya...si tippy juga pasrah bgt sih jd cw....

I read this one after Lawless mainly because I loved Cash Grier character. But these characters dont have any resemblance to the previous book, they could have been different people
In Lawless, Cash was in love with Christabel who was the only woman he was comfortable with.
This book, its like Cash never loved/ infatuated with Cristabel nor is he the brooding hero with a bad past. Tippy was a vamp in that book. The typical gold digger/ lying bi***/ shallow and clingy
The sudden change in her character in this book seemed strange. I mean, agreed she had a past and it made her the woman she was but it didnt stop her from being a b**** the first time around so I would have liked if she was a little flawed.. mellowed down eventually. This was one book where I was hoping Cash was as rude to her as DP heroes are to the innocent heroines. May be because I couldnt get over her cruelty in the first book or digest the fact that the women who lied through her teeth out of spite and jealousy in the first book comes out as honest in the second. Had teh change been gradual I would have added another star there

Cash Grier ini pria sexy yang menjadi kepala sheriff di kota itu. Novel ini sudah lamaaa banget aku baca ya, jadi reviewnya jga berdasarkan ingatan aja.
Di buku-buku sebelumnya, Cash ini telah sering diceritakan berkencan dengan Tippy, artis papan atas Hollywood yang dipandang sebagian besar warga kota sebagai perempuan bitches, pengeruk kekayaan dan perebut lelaki. Padahal Tippy ini nggak gitu loh, bisa dibilang Tippy salah satu dari sekian banyak wanita didunia yang selamat dari kekerasan rumah tangga.
Cash ini aslinya juga memandang Tippy bitches gitu, tapi dia kok sering banget menangkap kelebatan kesedihan dan siksa di mata Tippy, jadinya Cash penasaran. Btw, Cash ini mantan Texas Ranger dan memutuskan retired.
Aduuh pokoknya TOP deh karangannya Diana Palmer. Diceritakan dibuku sebelumnya, Tippy ini kuat tapi dibuku ini jadi kelihatan sosok aslinya, yaitu lemah dan tentu saja membutuhkan Cash disampingnya.

This book was disappointing compared to the previous book in this series. This book is part of a series called Long, Tall Texans. You'd probably have to read the previous book in this series, Lawless, to understand what's going on as it's a continuation of Lawless.
I wanted to read this book as I felt that I wanted to see Tippy in another light. I thought that Tippy might not just be a bitch, but underneath the snippy exterior, she might actually be a good person. Diana Palmer sometimes writes characters two-dimension-ally. She gives the 'bad' characters a second chance, which is something I really like. I like complex and unusual characters.
However, this story was disappointing to me. There was no angst, which I usually look for in books.

I don't know how I missed this the first time around in 2004. The story of love, loss, heartbreaking pasts, a real tear-jerker for me so I LOVE IT. Diana Palmer is an automatic buy for me. I love the family aspect in her stories and even though some do not turn out as you'd like, if a story makes me cry, then it's a winner to me. Thanks, Diana.

Esta historia me ha parecido tan entretenida como la anterior, la de Judd y Crissy. Ellos son hombres que tienen planificado su futuro libre de relaciones de las que se sienten como si los ataran a una res, no obstante, viene una chica y se los echa a perder, por mucho que se alejen y hagan lo posible por decepcionarlas.

This book follows on with the Texan series. Through the previous you get to know and love the renegade sheriff Cash Grier who is one of my favourite characters Diana Palmer has written about. This is Cash and Tippy's story and was a pleasure to read.

I normally don’t leave negative reviews, and this one isn’t all bad, but I feel I must leave a super honest one for this audiobook in order to possibly prevent someone from spending money or a credit without having some warning. This was... not good.
I went in holding my nose because this is Tippy's book. Yeah, Tippy, that nasty, cruel, lying bitch-bag who was the OW/villain of an earlier book. I *loathed* her then, and was beyond disappointed that she was being set up with Cash Grier. The romance was dead for me, because I hated the h. And for the first time EVER I skipped the sex scenes because, blegh, I dun't care.
This book was tonally all over the place. We have child sexual abuse back story (yet again), miscarriages and torture scenes next to 'wah wah wahhh' comedy moments like our h chasing an assassin with a frying pan while making off-the-cuff quips about fried eggs, or a snaaaaake in a filing cabinet. Give me strength.
It was also a bloated MESS. At one point we have Tippy's kidnapping storyline overlaying the political election storyline, the black-widow serial killer poisoner storyline, and the hearing for two police officers that the mayor is pressing to have fired, along with a millions of return characters all jostling for space and a run-on ending that had me praying that the damn book would just finish already. There was so much going on, and yet I was bored shitless.
Also:
Tippy boasting to Cash that she always tells the truth (except she was a consummate liar in the last book).
Tippy is a famous Hollywood actress and top model whose every move is front page news... but she's dirty poor and has to live a food stamp existence?
Tippy is recovering from a miscarriage that broke her mind and drove her to alcohol, and being nearly beaten/slashed to death... and within a week she's vamping Cash, flipping her skirt about, and making gags about getting him pregnant.
A reformed mafia boss who is massively into quilting?
Everybody and his dog are dishing out roundhouse kicks. This had become a constant feature in DP's latest books. It's really stupid.
In a way I'm relieved to have Cash's book out of the way, DP seems to have been obsessed with this character for a while and by now I have to admit I'm sick to the back teeth of him. Let's move on, please, to pastures new? I hope.

Postergue mucho tiempo la lectura de este libro porque sabía que la protagonista era la antagonista desagradable de un libro anterior de DP que me gusta mucho y temí la autora intentara limpiar su imagen transformándola en OTRA persona y así fue. En el primer libro era una mujer de mundo, intrigante, inteligente y manipuladora. En este libro es una idiota desesperada, pusilánime que además perdona todo lo que le hace el protagonista hasta el final. Después de toda la inseguridad que tiene por el antiguo amor de su marido aún así acepta que use el nombre de su amor imposible en su HIJA. Todo el tiempo él es desagradable, incluso le dice que él entiende mejor las consecuencias de una violacion que ella (ella sufrió una terrible violación reiterada siendo una niña). No se trata para nada el tema que él se negó ayudarla y que por esto le rajaron la cara con una botella. Todo el libro gira en torno a los no-problemas de él. Es desesperante. Es un libro mucho más largo que los usuales de DP y de todo corazón deseé que fuese mejor pero lo disfrute muy poco… Debí priorizar otros libros antes que este.

Cash Grief and Tippy Moore
This is one of my favourite DP books! We have meet Cash in previous books and I couldn't wait to to read his story! The story flowed so well and both characters were, not only likeable but loveable. The intense feelings if despair, frustration, fear and love were so palpable it jumped through the pages!. Tippy is a model turned actress with a hunting pass and a little brother to take care off. During her stay in Jacobsville she meets Cash, the sheriff and despite her reluctance to get close to men, she falls in love. Both succumb to their feelings and have a passionate night together. After a few misunderstandings Cash pushes Tippy away when she needed him the most. Fantastic read, packed with action and romance. Highly recommended!
