Imagine living a human charade for fifteen years and never knowing it. Imagine being provided less than a week to learn and accept your family’s true heritage before it overtook you. Alexa Jackson, Lexi, is abruptly thrown onto this roller coaster and quickly learns that she can’t change fate, regardless of how many lifetimes she is given. She will be transformed into a vampeen on her sixteenth birthday, she will be called upon to fulfill a greater destiny within the dangerous world of vampires, and she will have to risk heartbreak and rejection if she ever wants a chance at love with Kellan, whether she likes it or not.
I was born and raised in Charleston, SC, but now live in the hottest place on earth: Orlando, FL. I have three beautiful children who keep me running non-stop. When I'm not juggling life and kids, you'll find me huddled away somewhere writing my next book or happily reading someone else's. Like most authors I've come across, I'm a coffee addict, own far too many books than I can fit on my shelves, and I go to work in my pajamas a lot.
I just finished this last night. I picked it up because we (okay, me, but there were others in the group egging me on) were making fun of the cover in another thread...then things kinda' got a looooooooot out of hand and I ended up downloading it just to see how bad things could get.
(*ahem*) I now have a sort-of answer, and a half-way decent analogy (but I reserve the right to modify said analogy in the future).
Answer: Bad. Very bad. But I give the author this: it was an interesting idea. Analogy: Twi meets Shallow Hal (the movie) featuring Tracy Turnblad (of Hairspray fame) as Buffy. Oh, and Mean Girls.
Here's the writing (and trust me, there's little improvement in the writing and spelling from beginning to end. It's horrid.):
"I could still see the red iPod nano engulfing his buff bicep; the two together depicted his strength and withdrawal perfectly."emphasis added
(*coughs*) So, yeah. I'm thinkin' dude's totally buff and massive, even. Because we *all* know how big an iPod nano is. (I looked it up: 5".)
More examples of such fine writing!
(*ahem*) Though I am absolutely horrified that I have read this particular monstrosity in one sitting, I will not submit to banishment. (*coughcough*) I took one for the team, darnit - and I had help.
Oh, and for everyone's personal enjoyment/edification: it has an awesome ending. 1) caaaaaaaaaattttttt fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight! 2) Her “mental clarity keeps (her) pure”!!! Who knew that'd be all it takes??? (though she's not talking about any kind of deflowering. I had to read that page twice just to make sure.)
This book is great, i enjoyed reading this book because it changed my opinion on the mythical creature the vampire. The book told the proccess of becoming a vampire through the main characters experience. the book was very detailed and at the same time had high school drama that every teenager has to go through. over all this was an increadible book.
I really didn't like this book, at all! It was yet another twilight ripoff, and twilight is definitely something that can't be pulled off twice. I didn't like the message either. Before she becomes a vampire (or vampeen if we're being specific), she calls herself fat and acne ridden, she has low and fragile self esteem. Then one day she wakes up and suddenly she's beautiful and people treat her much better, and she literally says, her life is perfect. I feel like the message I got from this book was that if you're beautiful on the outside, your life will be perfect. I do have one plus though, I like the character Kellan. He seems to really evolve throughout the story, and he opens up much more. I liked learning more about him. Overall, I regret reading this book, and only forced myself to finish it because my English teacher insists that we read a certain number of books. I wish I had spent the money to get a better book, rather than downloading the free one off iBooks just so that I would have something to read.
I don't know what everyone else is talking about. yes the mc has some body image issues but, to me that makes her more real. to those reviewers that claim Lexi's life is perfect after her transformation into a vampeen must not have been reading the same book. for Pete's sake people it's a ya romance. Lexi does have conflict her human boyfriend she starts off with shows a progressively destructive jealous streak as the book progresses. she is being stalked by a vampire hoping to end her existence before it has even begun. notice during her big reveal and afterwards she feels pity for those who shunned her prior. I like how she really appreciates her friendship that endures her impossible transformation without second guessing her, her human father loving her because he realizes she is still the same daughter despite her outward appearance. I also like that by the end lexi is embracing her new future. and seriously people at this point every person that writes a teen vampiresque book will be compared to twilight due to its heightened notoriety right now.
I love paranormal young adult books, and I wanted to love this one. Unfortunately, I couldn't. I struggled to read the entire novel.
It was hard for me to understand why the author used fictional characters (from Twilight) to enhance the reality of her own fictional characters as though Edward and Bella weren't real, but her characters were.
In addition, this book needs a thorough round of edits. The author constantly switched tenses from past to present tense, and there were incorrect words used as well, i.e., I didn't snide her along the way.
While I appreciate a good description to set the tone of the scene, I didn't care for all the details used to describe what the characters wore and the like. One entire page was devoted to a dress which made me skim the passage.
Then there were the characters. Lexi, the heroine, had no consistency, and I never really got to like her. Mike, Lexi's boyfriend, an all around nice guy, segues into this vicious stalker because it seemed to be a convenient plot point, and I assume it was easier than having the heroine break his heart. And Mel, Lexi's best friend, was really only a cheerleader for her.
And finally, the part that really got to me was Lexi's change from overweight to thin overnight because she became a vampeen. No reason was given for the sudden weight loss and why it was necessary to change the heroine so drastically. Could Lexi not have "gotten the guy" by maintaining her current weight? Could there not have been a gradual weight loss because of the transformation?
As an aside, later on toward the end of the book, Lexi thinks that perhaps other Jasons (a hunk of a guy who was mean to Lexi in the beginning) would think twice before picking on the porkers. So she refers to the overweight girls, of which she was one herself at one time, as porkers. That just had me liking Lexi even less.
I wish I had more positive things to say about this book as I really liked the premise.
It took me a while to compose a review because I really had a hard time coming up with anything to say about the book. I downloaded this book as a freebie from Amazon but I really wish I hadn't. Honestly, I didn't like this book. Although I considered it's plot interesting I still couldn't help but feel a strong urge to stop reading and delete the e-book every time Lexi had a dialogue. I didn't even know that a vampeen is supposed to be a cross between a human and a vampire. I thought it meant vampire-teen.
Basically, the whole thing is like a sadder version of Twilight. There were a lot of inappropriate flowery words, unrealistic dialogue, and predictable scenes. There were a lot of Twilight references probably an attempt to portray how different Diary of a Vampeen is from the international best-seller. But the flow of events was slow and I hated the whole Insta-love thing with Kellan.
The characters were shallow and unrealistic, I didn't like any of them because they reminded me of many other book characters I've encountered. Lexi, for example was shy and insecure, but she was supposed to be very intelligent. Mike was the overprotective, jealous-type boyfriend. And Kellan was the handsome, brooding-type who just made your knees weak with one smile -- but he always tried to be a gentleman (sound familiar?). So I pretty much got bored and sloughed my way through the book. When the end of the book drew near I was very surprised and very disappointed at how quickly the conflict was resolved and how easily the happily-ever-after came for Lexi and Kellan. After I finished reading I just felt like an idiot for putting up with such a book. I mean, the plot was good but the execution could've been better. I definitely wouldn't let any of my friends read this book.
I don't know how to explain how this book didn't work for me.
Through the whole book, I rolled my eyes and the characters got on my nerve. I don't know if I have outgrown this kind of book or if it was just this book particularly, but I had to force myself to finish it.
I just couldn't connect with any of the characters and the main one just made me cringe so much. Her emotions and thoughts changed so quickly that I couldn't follow her.
Some characters drastically changed through the book and I couldn't believe it; no one ever changes that much and becomes a whole other person.
I believe that the MC was really selfish quite often and I wanted to try to understand her, but I never did.
I won't lie I was divided with two distinct emotions through this book:
and
I know a lot of people loved that book so I guess that it was just not for me.
Not really sure why I couldn't stop reading it. I think maybe it was because I was holding out hope it would get better. There were numerous spelling and grammatical errors throughout and the coining of the word Vampeen just sounds silly to me. Also, there were to many references and situations that had me thinking back to the twilight saga books. I wonder if Stephanie has heard of these books. I got lost a few times and some of the situations just seemed too cookie cutter and not enough detail put behind them. With that said, I may try to read the next book, Vamp yourself for war (even though the title is very cheesy sounding), because the author has some interesting situations and plots (the Vamp army being one of those) that has potential. We will see.
I loved this book!!! Most people who read twilight assume that all vampire romance books are to much like twilight. But I read this book and laughed and understood the morel of the story!!! Christin Lovell included twilight and true blood in her book in a way that had me giggling and thinking to myself, if I was in this girls shoes that is exactly what I would say. Now don't get me wrong I loved the twilight series and nothing compares to them, but Christin didn't even try to write her book like twilight. Needless to say I can't wait to read what happens next in the next book. Keep up the great work Christin!!!!
The basic premise of the story is very good. The execution is imperfect. The author rushed the action occasionally to the detriment of character development. Despite this, I really liked the characters; I wanted to get to know them better. I had a hard time with Lexi I becoming perfect physically with her transformation. I wish more time had been devoted to how disconcerting the physical changes were for her. I read the Kindle edition of this and there were several editing errors that were glaringly obvious. The problems would not stop me from reading the next book in the series. I enjoy brain candy and that is exactly what this book is.
I loved this book. All though it was loosely based on twilight (which I also loved) there were allot of differences in the book. For example Christin Lovell introduced a new species of vampire a 'Vampeen', half human - half vampire. Christin Lovell changed the view of vampires and vampeens. I couldn't put the book down, it was a great read and for a free book it is amazing. Most free books are short or non-interesting but this one was great. This is one of my favourite vampire books (I have read many), Christin Lovell is a brilliant writer and I have recommended this book to my friends and they all loved it. This book is great and i have read everyone in the series so far.
This book has a great twist to the vampire world. Lexi is a normal girl until her 16th birthday when her true nature is born. Kallen is the boy who makes her rethink the boyfriend she has who has always seen her a pretty. Lexi doesn't start out as the pretty person in the book on the out side but shes gorgeous on the inside. She grow right before your eyes in this awesome book. If you like vampires then yo will love this book, I promise.
Do you know what a vampeen is? Neither did I, but you can find out more in Christin Lovell’s book, The Diary of a Vampeen, the first book in The Vampire Chronicles. I bet you might be thinking a vampeen as something to do with a vampire. You’d be close and know as much as our heroine Lexi knows at the start of the tale. Spoiler alert: this is a book aimed at young teens. It is okay if you read it. No one will know you downloaded it to your Kindle. It’s just a simple explanation why everyone is either sixteen or about to become that magical age.
Sixteen is a magical age if you’re a vampeen because all your physical imperfections melt away. You become the prom and homecoming queen overnight. What American girl wouldn’t want to be a size four and have perfect skin? Almost none, which makes the premise so intriguing to teenage girls if all they care about, is their physical appearance. However, wait, you can see better in the dark, run faster, kick butt majorly. Take that you annoying cheerleader who made in fun of Lexi in her non-vampeen state.
Lexi, our heroine, is a little confused if she wants all that perfection at once. Will it cause her to turn from her human boyfriend, and best friend Mel? Sometimes it might be hard to explain why you want your steak very rare. Add to stress of literally becoming a new person overnight, at the grand age of sixteen, Lexi has to pick out if she wants her first to be human or vampire. It makes a big difference because she has to stay with that choice the rest of her life, which could be a very long time.
Now to the actual characters, Lexi and Vampire Kellam have some good chemistry going on. I find Lexi’s current human boyfriend, a lovable doofus. Her friend Mel doesn’t work on so many levels. Her parents are the kind that encourages her boyfriend to spend time alone with their daughter in hope she’ll pick him as a lover. I noticed a trend in YA books, the type of parents that only exist in a teen’s imagination, but most mothers aren’t vampeen either.
Diary of a Vampeen is similar to Twilight and should appeal to the same fans. A very light read has teens only worried about their looks, sexuality, and cars. Now most folks might think that is all teens think about, but I happen to have a higher opinion. If you’re into actual vampire folklore, then this isn’t the book for you. Simple teen angst with sexy vampires thrown in, then it’s the book for you. You’ll even find out what a vampeen is.
This book is about 15 year old Alexa Jackson or Lexi. SHe is going to turn 16 in a few days she will become a vampeen. She knew nothing about her hEritage until a boy named Kellan comes as an exchange student. They talk and get to know each other and Alexa asKs about his family. Kellan shows her a photo of his family at first Alexa doesn't find anything wrong with the picture then she sees her mom in the background Who looked like she was 17 when she was actually 42.Alexa asks Kellan about it and they go back to her home to discuss it with her parents. Her mom tells Alexa all about her background and where she came from and then she tells Alexa that she will become vampeen just like her on her birthday. Vampeens are not all vampire they are 80% vampire and 25% human so they can eat regular human food but still require the need for blood. I can't say anymore because if you haven't read the book then I will spoil it but I recommend you read this book it's really good.
This is a page turning novel which is YA. Alexa is a teenager who thinks of herself as an underdog with her boyfriend Mike and her best friend Mel. But when a new student comes she feels this strong pull to him which causes her guilt because she is with Mike. Eventually her and Kellan become friends and he tells her a secret about how their pasts are connected... how she is a vampeen (cross between a human and a vampire)! With this secret a whole new world is opened up to her. A pysocpathic Vampeen slayer is after her and her relationship with Mike is dwindling and the bond between her and kellan becomes stronger. With her new transformation with looks and a tramatic loss of weight how will her relationship Mike survive or will kellan be her choice.. will she have enough time to decide before the slayer comes for her.
What?!?! Don't judge me! It was free! Okay, so... I am, admittedly, a grammar (punctuation, what have you) snob. I really liked this book, and would love to be able to give it four stars, but between the bad (or completely lacking) punctuation, sentences that didn't make a bit of sense, and words that were misspelled, I just can't do it. The mistakes were oftentimes very distracting. I really enjoyed the story... It was a new take on an old idea and it had the potential to be very engaging. The characters were, for the most part, quite believeable and real, and I actually was interested in what they were doing, and how the main character (Lexi) would handle the things she was being faced with. I will read more by this author and just keep my fingers crossed that the editing has improved.
I really like this book... It was a refreshing new side to the vamp world. The way she makes her main character to be insecure just like a normal girl would be, and the way the friendship really stood there no matter what, was something I normally don't see on other books. It was funny, yet intense. I was surprise she made Lexi be a very strong woman, and she wasn't a "OMG I need someone to protect me, cuz I'm helpless" girl. it was a really true change, from insecure normal teenager to a don't mess with me woman. Is short but just perfect. She really wrote with a teenage mind, since is suppose to be a teenager who is writing on her diary, and Christin really pulled that through. I totally recommend it.
I would say that at first I thought it was going to be another twilight or vampire diaries. After reading the first chapter I was hooked. The character development made you feel that you were there with Lexi and Mel going through what they were experiencing. The plot twists had me keep guessing and surprised throughout the whole book. It truly was an enjoyable read with heart wrenching scenes and a familiarity that made you love all the characters. There was a character that everyone could relate to in some way and the ending was perfect. It did not leaving you confused or upset or a cliffhanger. I recommend this to anyone that enjoys an in-depth plot and detail character base. I cannot wait to read the next one!
The cover definitely grabbed my attention, the premise sounded interesting and it was a free on ibooks --- how could I not give it a chance. Once I "met" Lexi, I was intrigued! Alexa is a self-described curvy girl. At school she avoids having a locker. Her last one ended up with a Hungry Hippo game glued to it, cementing her nickname for all to see. But don't feel sorry for her, she's got a boyfriend, great friends and an upcoming birthday. So where does the title and drama coming into play --- can you guess??? A fantastically beautiful new boy enters the picture. Soon her birthday will bring more changes, conflicts and danger than Lexi could have imagined.
This was a good read with an excellent cover. I am always a sucker for great cover art and I could not beat the price of free from amazon. These were already great reasons to give the book a try but even from the first chapter my attention was held and I read this book in less than a day. It is a good twist to the vampire story and there are so many out there it is getting harder and harder to be original. I felt that Christin Lovell was able to get a different feel for vampires while still staying with some of the founding ideas. For paranormal readers out there, I would suggest this book. Looking forward to reading book two.
I tried hard to finish this, but I just couldn't get through this. There's so much here that needs a lot of improvement. First off, the author needs to work on trying to make her work seem less like a spin off of Twilight and also to try to make her main character seem less like a Sue.
There's an interesting enough idea here, but it's just hampered by an overly self-indulgent writing style that bores far more than it entertains.
I bought this book on a whim because I was looking for something to read in between the authors that I usually stick to. I am so happy that I did. This book is only the start of an amazing journey. The characters are so lovable and full of life and just when you think things are calming down another twist is thrown in. Christin Lovell is a great writer and the story really draws you in. I highly suggest that you read Diary of a Vampeen the first book in the Vamp Chronicles series.
I was SO disappointed. The book was very slow paced and the fact that this perfectly normal, nice girl HAD to be thin and pretty to get a nice boyfriend really annoyed me. The thing that REALLY irked me was the whole God thing at the end, I mean, what the hell was that all about?
This book was awesome. I got it because it was free but i am so glad i did. I also got the other two and they were just as mind blowing. Thank you Mrs. Lovell for writing such awesome books :)
