Elyne Mitchell is an Australian author best known for her Silver Brumby children's series, which tells the story of brumbies that roamed the Snowy Mountains in the Australian Alps, in particular a pale brumby named Thowra.
In 1988, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her services to literature, as well as an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Charts Sturt University in 1993.
Set during the time before white sailors discovered Australia, the story follows a dingo cub, Jinki, who roams the snowy south-east mountains of Australia. At certain times of year the Aboriginal people travel up here and enjoy the summer hillside life, and Jinki makes a friend of one lad. The changing seasons are well described, and the wildlife and natural environment.
This is a great book for young readers and will also be enjoyed by adults who like reading about nature or who are fans of Elyne Mitchell.
