DNF!!

Zombies are my favorite. This begins with the outbreak occurring at a high school house party. With some cheesy romantic aspects, but I didn't mind. As the action was decent and I was entertained.

Until halfway through. It's almost as if someone else started writing. The story became a never ending monologue of the stereotypical inner workings of a teenage girl. The doubt, the insecurity, the immaturity, the cute boy, the self centeredness and sometimes she remembers there are zombies. This on repeat. I hoped it would refocus after a few chapters. It did not. I had to tap out. One can only live in a teenage girl's emotional head space for so long.

You wouldn't believe how many typos, spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and missing words you could fill on one page unless you read this book.
There were so many in this book it was hard to read. I'm not even a native speaker and I'm sure I make a lot of mistakes... but this was just too much.

Now to the story. As you can grasp from the novel's title, this is a zombie story. Maggie and her friends are on a party when the zombie apocalypse starts. They manage to escape their buddies-turned-angry-monsters but soon discover that survival in the new world is not so easy. Maggie learns how to wield a weapon and to part with old friends. Can she find her parents and escape the terrible fate that awaits her if the dead got their paws on her?

This could have been a mediocre or even good zombie book (nothing unexpected here: lots of gore, little explaining. Nothing new, really.) if not for the writing style. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't terrible. It was standard YA, nothing special. But the many mistakes in it (sometimes it wasn't just the spelling) made the story incredibly hard to stomach.
Then there were scenes where the description was blurry and not very clear and you didn't get what the author wanted to tell you.
Towards the end of the novel, there is a sequence where Maggie thinks she is in two places at once which is handled horribly to say the least. It took me several pages to get what was going on and then it was still extremely vague.

All in all this was a frustrating work to read. The characters, especially Maggie, were underdevelopped, their actions sometimes completely irrational. In the space of a few chapters, Maggie goes from dispising her love interest to loving him deeply. It was disgusting and ridiculous. I think she makes out with him a few days after she killed her boyfriend. And yes, that might happen in the actual strained situation, but with the terrible writing style and the inconsequent pacing... it felt wrong.

I can't say I hated the book. It was ok. But the number of typos really needs to decrease. Seriously.

If I could give this zero stars, I would. The grammar and spelling errors in the first three chapter were so terrible, I quit. Get an editor or at least proof read the damn thing before publishing!

A short sharp PA book thats a little gem , reminds me of the early teenage slasher films but in no way derogatory to say that. Gets right into the action early on, grabs you by the throat and shakes you . Looking forward to reading "They Stumble " next !

I think I would have liked this book a lot more if it hadn't had so many grammar and spelling mistakes. It kind of distracted me from the story.

*Formerly the They Walk Trilogy revised*

Maybe I got my hands on the pre-revision version? Because Lord... the issues with this book...

I’m not your average seventeen year old. I just happen to be the only one my age that can expertly wield an ax like my life depends on it.

From the prologue, we're warned: Maggie is one special snowflake. And she's not like the other girls, as is reinforced in the 1st chapter.

For one, she doesn't dress like a slut, like her friend Claire does. And her friend Clare too. Or are they the same person? It's likely, since the author also spells "stairs" stares.

I won't go over the wonky grammar, spelling and syntax since the other reviews cover it. Let's have a look at the plot.

Chapter 1: Maggie and Claire/Clare get ready to go to a party.
Chapter 2: At the party... no, wait. Maggie and Claire/Clare get ready to go to a party.
Chapter 3: At the party... no, wait. Maggie and Clare/Claire and Dan and Mariah and Gabe (too many As, how am I supposed to distinguish them?) are still on their way to the party.
Chapter 4: At the party, Maggie is handled a strange drink by Gabe, her future love interest whom she hates. Because she's not like the other girls, she drinks it straight. Then Gabe say it's a shame that her boyfriend isn't here to defend her from strange guys. The boyfriend arrives.
Chapter 5: At the party, a car crashes outside.
Chapter 6&7&8: Zombies come out of the car and bite some kids. Chaos ensues.
Chapter 9: Maggie's boyfriend has been bitten.
Chapter 10: While the injured doss off (sic), the uninjured spilt up to block the openings with furniture to stop the things from entering the house.
Chapter 11: the survivors watch a emergency announcement telling them to stay away from the dead, whom are rising.
Chapter 12: one of the wounded jumps out the window and dies.
Chapter 13: her boyfriend insults Maggie, Gabe comes to the rescue.
Chapter 14: as they have a little chat on their own, Maggie's boyfriend turns into a zombie! Maggie seeks refuge in the garage where she finds the ax.
Chapter 15: Maggie kills zombie Matt with a gut retching scream and finds a truck.
Chapter 16: The others arrive. Wholly shit, says Sam. Maggie's in shock.
Chapter 17: They realize that you turn into a zombie from being bitten.
Chapter 18: They tell the unbitten survivors to get ready to leave.
Chapter 19: As they get ready to leave, the zombies break into the house.
Chapter 20-21: They escape with he truck.
Chapter 22-26: They go through each other's houses to find survivors. Gabe has to kill his Z-dad and one of the girls finds her little brother who had to kill his Z-mom.
Chapter 27: They spend the night at Emily's house.

I really enjoyed this book. I gave it 3 stars because of the poor editing. I could ignore it enough to enjoy the story but there were so many errors that I would think that having anyone proof read it even once before publishing could have made a big difference.

That being said, The story is more of a 3.5 to 4 star for me. I enjoy zombie novels when they are not specifically horror stories, but more character based, and this one is.

The characters in this book are varied in their reactions when confronted with dangerous and life threatening situations. I think we all wonder a little what we would do and how we would react in such a crisis situation and this story realistically depicts the different ways people would likely handle it.

The end was believable and shows the evolution of the characters with no cliff hanger. It does leave the door open for a sequel though. Due to the choice made at the end of this story the next evolution of the characters and the results of their decision would make a good story.

This novel was long and labourus but enjoyable. The characters were courageous and likeable, they made you feel as though you were part of the group.

The plot was really great, it allowed the reader to be captivated by this zombie world. I especially liked how it was a man made problem which started everything.

A great book, easy to read but seems to drag on a bit towards the end. lookibg forward to the next one

OMG, I loved this story! The action starts right away, the characters are all insanely awesome, and the attraction between Maggie and Gabe is the best! I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of horror, but the zombie descriptions pulled at me in a terrifying way. Maggie is one kick-butt chick, I wish I was as brave as she is.

There were a lot of mistakes, mostly spelling but I could not put it down. I hope there will be a second book because I really want to know what happens after they left the free zone, and if they make it back home and what they find, and definitely want, okay need more Gave and Maggie!

The ending left something to be desired. The story itself sort of dragged on as well. But all in all it was enjoyable. The conclusion might lead way to a sequal. I hope so.

I really enjoyed this book! I love zombie books and this one was done well. Sure there were some typos but that didn't take away from the story for me. Can't wait for book 2!
