A girl who’s been lied to her whole life...
Near her eighteenth birthday, Margaret Lenora Caine finds a chest hidden in the attic containing proof that she was adopted. The daughter of wealthy merchants in Seattle, she feels betrayed both by her real parents and by the ones who raised her.

Maggie desires a place where she belongs. But her mother’s constant criticism and reminders that she doesn’t fit the mold of a young woman of their social standing have already created tension in their home. With the discovery of the family secret, all sense of her identity is lost.

When Maggie asks to visit her grandmother in Arkansas, her father agrees on the condition that she take her Aunt Georgia as a chaperone and his young partner, Charles Stanton, as protection on the journey. Will she discover who she really is and, more importantly, what truly matters most in life?

This is a mini ‘Books For Christian Girls’ review. It is not a full content review and will not receive one. These mini-reviews are years old and just for clarity on the rating the book received on Goodreads.

8/19/2018-
I was trying to re-read this book tonight and while I originally gave this book 3 stars back in December of 2014, this DNF is being given a 1 star due to content in the first 77 pages. As a major adoption advocate, I wanted to enjoy this series so much, but, unfortunately, found problems. I quickly skimmed through the rest of this book along with books two and three and did not find myself missing anything. I found that because we see a married couple's POV, the sexual content was frequent with the husband's desires being mentioned just in the amount of pages I read this time. Disappointing to say the least. :(

*Main Content-
2 hand kiss, 1 nose kiss, 1 cheek kiss, 1 head kiss, 1 barely-above-not-detailed kiss; Touches & Tingles; Some Warmth & Smelling (married couple); Noticing (3x); Mentions of passion between a married couple, hints of rekindling it, & a husband’s desires (barely-above-not-detailed); Mentions of blushes & crushes; A few mentions of embraces & touches between a married couple; A mention of a provocative look; Love, falling/being in love, & the emotions (x2, including a married couple);
*Also: Mentions of a wife dying in childbirth, labor, & pain (barely-above-not-detailed); Mentions of conceiving children & not being able to (Florence deals with emotions, selfishness, and jealousy on this topic); A few mentions of nursing; A few mentions of jealousy; A few mentions of Maggie’s womanly figure; A couple mentions of a man putting on his pants & shirt.

Maggie’s Journey by Lena Nelson Dooley is a beautifully crafted narrative, much like finely tailored clothing—each thread woven with purpose and meaning. The story of Maggie’s search for truth and identity unfolds like the careful stitching of a designer's vision, revealing that even in the midst of confusion and loss, God’s hand is there, guiding us for our good and His glory.

The characters’ faith isn’t a forced afterthought; it’s as inherent to them as the clothes they wear, always present, always real. Maggie’s journey of self-discovery is about uncovering the deeper truth that she is known, loved, and perfectly designed by God, despite the doubts and lies she told herself

Charles' words to Maggie echo in my heart: “God can make all things work together for our good if we love Him. And He does, even if we make wrong choices from time to time.” This is one of many heartbeats of the story—even when we feel torn and unraveled, God can stitch our lives into something more beautiful than we can imagine.

This story is about more than just family secrets—it’s about how God’s truth can rework even the most broken parts of us. If you’ve ever felt like you didn’t fit, Maggie’s Journey will remind you that you are always a part of a greater design, stitched together with God’s love and purpose.

I highly recommend Maggie’s Journey for readers who enjoy heartfelt storytelling and faith-driven character arcs that make this book so special. If you love stories that blend historical depth with personal growth and faith, Maggie’s Journey is for you.

It’s the perfect read for anyone looking for a reminder that God’s plan for us is always unfolding with purpose and grace when we fully surrender to Him and His ways. Much like a raw fabric being transformed into a stunning garment, our lives—often marked by our own flaws—are carefully crafted, each trial revealing the beauty of God’s design for us.

I received a digital ARC of this book from Celebrate Lit Publicity Group. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing and story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

I was very intrigued by this story right from the beginning! It completely captivated me! Maggie was adopted as a baby and never told. She finds out and is not happy about it. She goes to visit her grandmother and Charles and her aunt accompany her. This is my first read from this author and I loved her storytelling! I also love how she tackled some tough subjects. There are 4 different points of view from Joshua, Florence, Maggie and Charles. I really loved all the characters and love that they had flaws and were not perfect. I think I loved Maggie and her adopted father the most. There was pretty good Christian content sprinkled through out. There were a couple moments, one in particular that I thought was a little inappropriate for a Christian book but nothing too scandalous. Overall I really enjoyed this story of Maggie’s journey and recommend!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75

Content: marital intimacy implied between married couple, kissing between married couple(slightly “heated” with light detail), husband thinks about interactions with wife from the previous night(not detailed), woman checks out man throughly enough to make her blush(not really appropriate for Christian book), Florence suffers with infertility and struggles with jealousy because of it, mother dies during childbirth, adoption

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Captivated from beginning to end!

I read this book in 2 ½ hours. That’s a record for me. I literally did not put it down. Not for a moment. From the prologue to the last page, I was captivated. There was joy, suffering, excitement, confusion, and romance portrayed through vivid images of life, love and loss.

There are many emotions dealt with in the book but the one that spoke most to me was fear. From Florence and Joshua’s marriage to Maggie’s discovery about her adoption, the author shows us what fear can do to a relationship. The lies it can foster, misconceptions that it can bring, the mistrust that evolves ultimately leading to discord. But then we see the beautiful and loving hand of the Father and how he gently but firmly breaks that bondage of fear and brings about restoration in those same relationships. It was by no means overly obvious, either, making this a great book to suggest to friends who may not normally read Christian Fiction.

Every character in this story captured my heart. Each one is intricately explored and exposed in such a delicate and profound manner. I could go on and on about the book. But I won’t. I dislike spoilers so I will only say that I hope you fall in love with Maggie’s Journey as much as I did!

This was my first book by this author that I have read. I can’t say enough about her writing style. Impeccable! Book 2 can’t come soon enough for me

Special thanks to FIRST Wild Card Tours and Kim Jones | Publicity Coordinator, Charisma House | Charisma Media for sending me a review copy. I was not required to write a positive review, just my opinion.

I am an adopted child and this book was hard at points and was touching in others. Maggie doesn't understand why her mother Florence treats her so badly. She loves to design dresses and her mother despises that. Florence doesn't even delight in her daughter. Maggie begins to wonder if there is something wrong with her. Just before her 18th birthday party Maggie goes up to the attic to look through old dresses that she knew her grandmother had made for her mother. In searching for the dresses she finds a trunk that holds a picture of a woman that looks just like her with curly hair, and a piece of paper with signatures denoting that she was adopted. She is confused, heartbroken, and betrayed. I found myself along with Maggie bawling. I have always know that I was adopted. I do know others whose parents didn't tell them and I know the pain that caused them. After Maggie's birthday party Maggie goes to Arkansas to see her grandmother and during that trip she gets answers to a lot of questions that most adoptee's have. Lena does a great job with this book in showing the pain that most adoptive kids go through in not knowing who they are. I highly recommend this one!

Part of her was missing, but she didn’t know what part it was.”

Do you skip prologues? In some cases, they are very much an essential part of the book, not just an excerpt taken from deeper on in the book. If you skip the prologue to Maggie’s Journey by Lena Nelson Dooley, you’ve just missed some vital information, plus a glimpse of life on the Oregon Trail.

When we meet Maggie Caine, she is turning eighteen, and very much frustrated with her life. Maggie has great clothing designing abilities and hopes to follow in the steps of her maternal grandmother, who is a famous designer in Arkansas. However, Maggie’s social- climbing and uptight mother wants Maggie to have nothing to do with working a common job when she could be a socialite. When the friction between the two reaches a climax, it is decided Maggie will visit her grandmother accompanied by her youngish aunt and her childhood friend, Charles Stanton.

Boy, could I ever identify with Maggie’s wish to be her own person! Discovering a well-kept family secret, Maggie begins doubting her parents’ love and care. And she is afraid her inner lack will make her appear lacking to the world. “Something deep inside her was missing, a piece of her heart, maybe a piece of her soul...could she ever find it again? Maybe if she could, she’d feel whole, a complete human being.
Accepted for who she really was, with no one trying to change her into something else.”

Maggie’s mother struggles with feelings and thoughts from her past that influence who she has become. When she takes an honest look at herself, even she is repulsed. I love Joshua’s response:
“My love for you isn’t conditional, Flory. You don’t have to earn my love. It’s a gift. Just as God’s love doesn’t come with strings attached.”

A few parts of the story were not as obvious to me as I believe they are meant to be. This could be just my interpretation.

I certainly did like how loyal and or loving Maggie’s father is to all the people in his life. He reminded me of my own father! The character of Charles took a little longer to grow on me.

Family secrets, tensions, the Old West (steam engine time), and romance, plus themes of adoption, old friends-to-more, and reconciliation, all combine to make this a good read.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“You are who God created you to be. The Bible says He knew each of us when we were in our mother’s wombs. He knit us together there. You were special to Him when He created you, and you’re special to Him right now.”

“I want to be me, not someone you’re creating.”

Reading, "Maggie's Journey", I could not put the book down and found myself disappointed toward the end, that there was an end to the book; I wanted it to continue because I was so curious about the main character, Margaret Lenora Caine, and rather or not, she would find answers to her questions.

At 283 pages, readers will discover, not a historical romance, but a wonderful, historical fiction, based in a time when trains have become a method of travel in the States and more homes were beginning to use a telephone, while telegrams were a form of finding out information of what was happening across the world, but for Margaret Lenora, none of these will answer the questions she had about herself, her family, and even her faith, on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, when she discovers, the secret she was adopted.

Lena Nelson Dooley, weaves a wonderful tale of family and love and self-identity, set against the background of a still young country, and filled with historical based tidbits, that will delight readers of historical fiction.

Margaret Lenora Caine, is a strong and lovable character, and even with the mini-backstories that happen in the backgrounds, the reader will not find themselves distracted from the overall reading, as they follow Margaret Lenora Caine as she travels to Arkansas to learn more about who she is and her place in the whole scheme of things.

Personally, I was ecstatic to know that there is a second book coming in May 2012, for the series, though right now May seems too far away and I want to know more about what happens to Margaret and answers to some of the questions that the reader are left alluded to, but this is what makes this book a great read, for those who are looking for a historical fiction that will sweep the reader away.

The story has strong characters, a firm story that doesn't run into rabbit trails, characters that will sweep the reader away, and if you are like me, you'll find yourself unable to put the book down and wishing instead, that the author, would have just continue writing more about Margaret, instead of leaving you hanging for more.

This both creates a book, that will have you waiting, impatiently for the next book in the series, having to re-read the book just to get your fill again of Margaret Lenora Caine and hoping for more glimpses of this delightful read,be it vacation, you're on a holiday, or need a book that will warm your heart and leave you still wanting more.

So if you are looking for a book that will sweep you off your feet and finding yourself reaching the shelf to re-read again, I strongly suggest you try out,"Maggie's Journey" by Lena Nelson Dooley.

Margaret Lenora Caine or Maggie as she is known to her close friends and family is very special, just doesn't know how special until she ventures into her attic looking for a dress she can remake to wear to her 18th birthday party. While searching for something she can use, she comes across a white chest which contains an old photo that looks just like her and a letter from Angus McKenna signing over his rights to Joshua and Florence Caine, her parents.

Maggie and her mother have been at odds during the last few years and Maggie can't figure out why. Her mother does what she can to crush all her hopes and dreams of becoming a dress designer because she doesn't believe a woman should work. She should be busy running a household, planning parties and shopping while her wealthy husband supplies all the money they need. But that isn't what Maggie wants at all. She wants to work and run her own dress shop like her grandmother in Arkansas. When she asks her father for permission to visit her, her father grants her request so long as she travels with her aunt Georgia and his business partner, Charles Stanton.

She hopes that her and Charles will get to know one another more during the two week train ride but when Charles shows more interest in her aunt Georgia than her, she vows she will only be Charles' friend and work towards doing all she can to learn about the dress making business. Will Maggie discover who she really is in the process, and more importantly, what really matters most in life?

I received Maggie's Journey by Lena Nelson Dooley compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and LOVED it. Struggling with some unprecedented news prior to her trip, I think it really provides Maggie with an opportunity to understand what life is all about and how certain decisions are made in her best interest even though she may not always understand them at the time. I rate this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars for my honest review and look forward to more books by Lena Nelson Dooley in the future.

"Maggie's Journey" by Lena Nelson Dooley

This author is a talanted writer and winner of the Will Rogers Medallion Award for Western Fiction...

The story starts of a couple on a wagon train going west ...the trip is long and "dusty" to say the least.
Florence is a woman that has waited a long time hoping to have a baby and when she sees others with little ones it causes her much heartache.
But..this trip is going to be one she will never forget-she is becoming very despondent when another couple on the train has a big problem. The mother dies giving birth to triplet girls and Florence tells God he should let her have one of these babies.
The father is overwhelmed with death of his beloved wife and doesnt know how to take care of 1 let alone 3 babies-he makes the decision to give Florence one little girl and another family one and he will raise one himself.
This story is of Margaret Lenora who Florence raised as her own and never tells her she is adopted.
Margaret always feels as if she is missing something as she grows up and she and her mother grow apart as she matures. Margaret(Maggie) has dreams of being a fashion designer and seems to have a talant for it. she feels her mother does not want her to pursue a career though and this causes conflict.
Just before her 18th birthday she finds out she has been adopted and her heart is broken to think she has been lied to all these years.
She plans a trip to see her grandmother and an older aunt and a young man she has grown up with go with her. Maggie feels that Charles is someone she wants to get to know better in a different way as she is older now, but she sees he has eyes for her aunt which is disconcerting to say the least.
Can Maggie and Charles ever get beyond childhood feelings and move forward? What do you think about a child being adopted and not told about it, should they be told or not?
I enjoyed reading Maggies story and look forward to the next books in the series of the other two girls.

As an avid reader of Christian fiction I've read a ton of Christian romances by dozens of different authors and Lena Nelson Dooley is one of the best writers when it comes to Westerns. With her latest novel, Maggie's Journey she introduces the first of three sisters in what is sure to be one interesting series. Follow Maggie Caine as she discovers a deeply hidden secret that makes her doubt everyone and everything she knows and discovers the joys and heartache that comes with love.

Right from the beginning I knew that Maggie's Journey was going to be an interesting read. It's quite an emotional start that brought a tear to my eye. I'm definitely excited to see where the author takes the story line of triplets who are separated at birth by an unforeseen and unfortunate circumstance. As for Maggie, she's definitely a likable character and a lot like a typical teenager--at odds with her mother over just about everything. She does have a lot of growing up to do and when she discovers the family secret it forces her to look deeper at herself and what's really important with the help of her old friend Charles and her aunt Georgia.

Maggie's character is definitely the most dynamic of all the people in the story. I found Charles to be a bit shallow in his affections. Without giving too much away his attention switches from one lady to another in a flash. He is a bit of a cad in that respect. However by the end of the story he definitely improved. Maggie's Journey is a good book that I'm sure will please fans of the genre.

I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m not really a big historical reader, but I just finished Maggie’s Journey, the first book in the McKenna’s Daughters Series by Lena Nelson Dooley, and I think I’m changing my tune.

Never having read a book by Lena Nelson Dooley, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Maggie’s Journey focuses on a woman’s search to find her identity after she discovers that her birth parents gave her away, and the serious emotional struggles between a mother and daughter.

From the first page, Ms. Dooley creates the stage with the setting. You could feel yourself suffering through the long journey on the Oregon Trail, enduring the train ride, or touring a magnificent clothing-design mansion. I enjoyed the historical tidbits offered throughout the book.
And the characters jumped right off the pages. I rooted for Maggie as she searched for answers and attempted to be the person she was meant to be, rather than the customary woman of society. Other times, I wanted to scold Florence, but the author molded her from the beginning in such a way that I understood her motivation.

The real romance in this book wasn’t between the main characters, but rather with Joshua and Florence, Maggie’s parents. I admired Joshua, a man of honor and passion, who demonstrated unconditional love for his wife in the toughest of circumstances.

I’ll look forward to Lena Nelson Dooley’s next book in the McKenna’s Daughters Series, Mary’s Blessing, coming in May. Congrats, Lena Nelson Dooley! Five stars for an impeccably written story!

Margaret Lenora Caine, an only child, grew up in Seattle and had a very privileged life. She has noticed a change in her mother, Florence, in the last few years, she feels like her mother is constantly criticizing her and trying to change the person she has become. Margaret can't figure out what she's done to upset her mother. Margaret loves to design dresses which is what her grandmother does in Little Rock, Arkansas but she has never seen her and she is her only grandchild.

In a few days Margaret will be turning 18 and she wants to design a special dress but her mother already has something else in mind. When she remembers that there are some of her mother's old dresses in the attic Margaret goes exploring. She finds a beautiful green dress that would only need to be shortened and will look nice with her red hair. Margaret continues to look through chests in the attic and finds a little white chest, when she gets to the bottom of it she finds out a family secret, she may have figured out why her mother want's to change her, or is that really what is going on.

What a great story this is, Lena did a wonderful job. I couldn't put this book down and read it in about 1 1/2 days. I can hardly wait to read number two in the series, Mary's Blessing, I will be starting it as soon as I'm done with this review. You won't go wrong investing in this book.

A few years ago I read my first novel with seasoned author Lena Nelson Dooley in her Love Finds You in Golden, New Mexico and enjoyed it beginning to end. Again with Maggie's Journeyd it from the first page and I am uber eager to read more as it comes in the rest of the series.

Of course I'm always a fan of characters that are named Margaret, as I'm a Margaret. But I enjoyed the personality of the characters. The growth that both Maggie and Charles had to endure. It brings a real relative light on the emotional aspects and aftermath of what the turmoil of the Oregon Trail may have left for the next generation. I think the entire series will be thoroughly entertaining and I cannot wait for more.

Maggie's Journey isn't your typical romance. The title does the book justice. This is about the journey Maggie takes and what she learns as she travels it. It's a sweet story of misunderstandings, pride and forgiveness. This was extra fun for me because I have family who live in the Seattle area on the Puget Sound and have visited them. I loved reading about the area. Ms. Dooley does a beautiful job in digging deep into her characters to bring them alive. She not only fleshes out the hero and heroine, but also the secondary characters. I feel in love with the heroine's father. If you're looking for a book with strong spiritual threads without preachy words this book is for you. Lena Nelson Dooley has mastered the art of getting the truths of the bible out without making you feel you just sat through the longest sermon of your life.

I won this in book form through a Goodreads Giveaway. After giving this book the attention it deserved, I really did enjoy it. Set in the late 1880's, Maggie's Journey is about a young woman who was adopted under tragic circumstances. She finds out she is adopted one day after looking through a trunk in th attic. Torn by sadness as to why she was given up, Maggie seeks to find out answers about who she is and what her future holds when she takes a trip with her beloved aunt Georgia and childhood friend Charles to Arkansas to visit her grandmother. There, Maggie disovers where she belongs and where her heart lies. This was a nice, heartfelt novel that I enjoyed.

Fell into this book; hook, line and sinker! The lives of three babies after a hard childbirth in a wagon train; the mother is too weak to live. Loved the storyline and emotion of the characters! Introduces first child and her reaction to being adopted. Will begin the second book ( Mary's Blessing's) of the series, next. Can't wait for the third book in the McKenna's Daughter's Series to debut! Thank you Lena Nelson Dooley for another great book to dive into! :)

Christian Historical Romance is one of my favorite genres to read. Maggie's Journey by Lena Nelson Dooley is Book 1 in McKenna's Daughter series. I am excited about this new series!

WOW, I can honestly say this book was a "read until finished" book. I started it and got so intrigued with the storyline that I did not put it down for 4hrs, when it came to the END. The 2 main characters in this story are Margaret(Maggie) Lenora Caine and Charles Stanton. Maggie never really got along with her mom Florence, always feeling not a strong bond. Maggie turns 18 and discovers information in the attic of their home that shows that Maggie was adopted by the Caine family. Maggie is now determined to find out her true identity, something she has been yearning to do for a time. A decision is made for Maggie to travel to Little Rock, Arkansas to visit her grandmother. Charles Stanton was chosen to escort her to her destination, as he is a young business associate of Maggie's father. The 2 set out for their destination. I really enjoyed seeing Charles first stick to "business" and not try to allow his feelings for Maggie to show. I also LOVE how Maggie and Charles help one another throughout this journey along the Oregon Trail. I really enjoyed the fact that Charles and Maggie finally realize they are bonding very strongly and move forward with a Romance. The Faith of the Characters in this book was amazing. I really LOVE how Charles reminds Maggie that everything is possible with God. The bok is one of Family, Faith and romance. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. GREAT BOOK!

Maggies Journey by by Lena Nelson Dooley is the first book in the McKenna’s Daughters Series. This is a Christian historical fiction story that focuses on Maggie, a young a lady that finds out she was adopted. She travels with her aunt to visit her grandmother and learns about fashion design

This is a well written, easy to read story with nice characters. I enjoyed how the story leads out with the wagon train, the hardships endured and the decisions made. I like how this story shows how the secret Maggie’s parents kept affected the relationship between her and her mother. And, how her mother responded to the life they lived. I found this to be a very interesting story. I especially enjoyed the parts of the story when Maggie works on designing gowns.. I like how faith is woven through out the story. I admire the strength Maggie’s biological father had to do what was best for her.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

A girl who’s been lied to her whole life…

Maggie's Journey by Lena Nelson Dooley is an emotional character driven story of one young woman seeking to find her identity and place in the world. Margaret Lenora Caine turn eighteen, discovering that she is not exactly who she thought she was, at least not by who is her family. It was saddening but understandable of her confusion and feelings of betrayal but yet didn’t she understand that her person, character and core beliefs did not change. It takes a visit to her grandmother for her make the bigger journey of self-discovery.

The first of the McKenna's Daughters books, this was a thought provoking and enjoyable read as the reader travels along with Maggie. There are emotions of fear, confusion, self-doubt, anger, forgiveness, joy, and romance all rolled up in this novel. A Christian look at life and identity to be found through the love of God.

1867 - A child, one of three, is given to Joshua and Florence Caine to be their adopted daughter when her mother dies in childbirth. An answer to prayer?

1885 - Now at almost 18 years of age, Maggie finds out about her adoption, leaving her with the feeling that she does not belong anywhere. This begins her journey to discover who she really is. A lovely story of discovery as she travels back to where her parents started on their journey on the Oregon Trail. As she learns more about herself, will she also learn how the Lord had just the right plan for her back in 1867?

An early copy of the McKenna’s Daughters, #1 Was received through WildHeart Books and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.

I really enjoyed this book, and am eager to read the rest of the series! The cast of characters is wonderful, and the differing personalities interact well together. The premise of triplets separated at birth by necessity kept up my interest as I followed the first one on her journey of figuring out who she was. Dooley’s writing brings the people and story to life.

It turns out this series was first published about 10 years ago by a different publisher, but was only available in paperback. It’s now being re-issued by a new publisher with e-book format available too.

"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."

A story about our connections to God and family

A captivating tale of our connections to God and family and how that can be so easily lost. Maggie has seemingly lost those connections and she, with help along the way, struggles to get them back.

Maggie’s Journey

I can see why Ms Nelson was awarded accolades. This is a great story with great content and great storytelling. Adding scriptures texts and quotes in the story helps readers to understand and apply these words to their own personal journeys.

Book 1! Maggie's Journey by Lena Nelson Dooley

What a beautiful story! How am I ever going to write a review without giving it away? I will tell it best by telling you about the character and integrity of the people in Maggie's Journey.

I liked that they shared their food on the train.

Georgia pulled the picnic basket from under their seat. "Is anyone besides me hungry?"

Charles dropped back onto his bench. "I could do with some food about now. What do we have?"

"Knowing Mrs. Jorgensen, probably enough to feed an army." Maggie lifted the hinged lid and enticing aromas of roast beef and something spicy permeated the air around them.

She looked up and noticed that the people sitting near them glanced longingly toward the food. She lowered her voice. "We can't eat in front of these people. I wouldn't feel right about it."

Georgia made a quick scan of the car. "There are less than a dozen people, counting us. Maybe some of them have been on the train for quite a while. Do you think we have enough to share?"

Maggie nodded. "But what will we do for food after it's all gone?"

Charles raked his long fingers through his hair. "The train will have to stop to take on fuel and water. Usually we can buy food where it stops. Besides, some of this will spoil before we can eat all of it."

"Then let's divide what we have." Maggie lifted the tea towel covering the food.

Right away, I liked them!!

Their kindness is reciprocated at their first stop for food. Replenished by a refill for their basket, they are told to choose what they would like from a restaurant supply room. Fresh fruit and canned goods, in addition offered a can opener, extra biscuits and ham. This doesn't just happen! Favor.

Throughout there is kindness and listening, making right choices when there could have been bitterness. Harboring ill feelings and imagining others' intent could have soured relationships. Open communication restored what protective walls never could have achieved.

This is the first story I have read by author, Lena Nelson Dooley. Very well written, I connected with Maggie's story and it was a quick read for me. I would like to go beyond this segment of their lives!

~*~ In the beginning, it took me a while to warm up to Charles. He seemed scattered and unsure, but real. After experiencing a couple of setbacks, he realized his need to look outside himself to God's plan for his life.

~*~ I would have liked Georgia explored more. She showed great wisdom with Charles and Maggie individually and I would have liked to have gotten to know her better. I would like them revisited in a few years!

~*~ I liked the growth in Maggie's parents as they became reacquainted and shared their hearts. Sometimes a marriage grows stale by inactivity in each other's life and they need to rediscover themselves. It enriches all they come in contact with.

~*~ I am glad for Maggie's future and the part her family and friends will play in it. Maggie is very enjoyable and has strength and character beyond her years!

~*~ Maggie's grandmother shared her love and acceptance, and was vital in this portion of Maggie's life. All of them blended in growth and learning to understand each other. Expressing themselves, listening and forgiveness were key.

I am looking forward to reading books 2 and 3 of the McKenna's Daughters Series! I have Mary's Blessing to begin right away.

We are all on a journey... how we choose to treat others determines our daily outcome--detours become special meetings when we truly listen with our heart.
