Roxie's Protectors #4

Skylar's Devotion

Rate this book
A famous Victoria's Secret fashion model, Braelyn comes home to visit her parents after being away for a year. On a shopping trip, a man on a motorcycle at the red light snags her attention while she crosses the street. When she draws even with him, he flips open the visor of his helmet, and she instantly forgets what she's doing. A blast from a car horn makes her aware she's standing in the middle of the crosswalk, and she quickly gets moving.

Skylar follows the beautiful blonde with his gaze, watching where she goes. Sitting at a red light is not the place he expects to run into his would-be mate, but there she was. Determined not to let her get away, he follows her. He finds it hard enough to deal with her being mortal and not knowing anything about werewolves, but the bigger problem is the stalker who wants to do his famous mate more harm than good.

What Is It About:
Skylar is a werewolf and a protector of the foretold one, Roxie. While riding his motorbike through town, he sees an attractive woman cross the road and when he smells her, he knows that she's his mate. Braelyn is a Victoria's Secret model that is in town to visit her parents. She's just as attracted to Skylar but she makes him work for it by taking him shopping with her. They start a relationship but just as things start to settle, Braelyn discovers that she has a stalker and his threats become bigger and bigger until he becomes brave enough to do something.

What I Liked and Didn't:
I really don't enjoy short stories, I don't get into the characters because of how quickly the book is over and the plot is shortened down to fit the length. There was hardly any escalation with the stalker, it was almost as if he was just introduced and then he attacked. It didn't really make too much sense. I don't know why by I didn't like the fact that Braelyn was a Victoria's Secret model. I just didn't understand why that had to be important and even if I was okay with it, it wouldn't matter. It wouldn't matter because of that stupid couple withdrawl thing that means that they can't be individuals and the women have to always quit their jobs. So I suppose it just doesn't make sense to me for her to have such a high profile job just to make her quit it anyway. But oh well.

Final Thoughts:
I'm going to assume that from that rant it's pretty obvious that I'm not a fan of the series. I don't exactly regret reading it nor was it a struggle to finish but it wasn't really a completely enjoyable read and I think the fact it's easier to remember the negative over the positive isn't a very good sign.
Would I recommend it? Not even a little bit, there are so many better shifter romances out there than this.
Will I be carrying on the series? Yes because I'd originally read them four years ago and gave them a decent rating and I really don't want to leave that at that considering that I'm not liking the series.

Skylar is riding his motorcycle through San Francisco when he is stopped at a light. As he waits for the pedestrians to cross in front of him, he catches the scent of his mate. It’s coming from this gorgeous girl passing in front of him, who stops in surprise, their eyes meet and he’s hooked.

Braelyn is a ‘Victoria’s Secret’ model and has had a lot of men chase her, but for the wrong reasons. So she’s come up with a series of tests to see if the really want her. So far none have passed until Skylar shows up.

This is the exact opposite of the previous book. As Jaden was barely getting by, Braelyn is has a lot of money. But the characters in these books take things so calmly it’s ridiculous. If someone told/showed me there were a werewolf I’d freak out. At least for a little while. It’s one thing to read about them but… These guys handle it like they we’re told that he’s a different religion or something. And Miles is getting boring.

For someone as famous as she is, you’d think she’s have an assistant or someone to handle her fan mail. And she should have known to do something about the hate mail before.

Roxie is so perfect for being the head of these guys. She knows just how to handle them. Physically, they may be big, tough protectors, but mentally, they’re a bunch of teenage boys. And she has a huge part in this story. I loved it!

Quick Thoughts: 1)At no time did I see Braelyn give Skylar her address, yet he knew where to pick her up for their date. Is her parent’s house so well-known? Not a good idea.

2)What kind of name is Nevaeh? I can’t even begin to know how to pronounce it. Interesting idea, but the poor kids. They’d be in for world of teasing.

3)That is one weird restaurant.

Fave Scenes: shoe shopping, finger foods and Skylar’s wolf story.

I began reading this novella knowing full well that it was the 4th in a series and fully expecting to at times being hit with mentions of a story line I would only know had I read the previous books. But I after reading the blurb I decided to take the chance. An interesting blurb where our hero, Skylar first spots his mate at a red light as she is crossing the street hooked me. The concept interesting enough that I had to give it a shot.

Well, Chenery did not disappoint. Not only are we presented with engaging characters but the simple storyline of boys meets girl minus all the drama before hand is endearing and quite enjoyable. My only complaint would be the speed in which everything happened. They meet and after a particularly stalker-like move of following her into a lingerie story, they have their first date. Within a day they were saying I love you, and within 2 days discussing happily ever after. Even the big reveal of his secret isn’t all that big. There was no fan fair and after a brief pause she was very accepting of his being a werewolf and eagerly looking forward to that happily ever after.

However, all things considered, I found Skylar to be a very sweet and full-bodied character. The romance between him and Braelyn had a very fairytale whirlwind quality to it. But most importantly of all, it made me eager to get the previous books and read them all as soon as possible. So all things considered, Skylar’s Devotion was a hit as far as I’m concerned.

When Skylar meets Braelyn, he knows instantly that she is destined to be his mate.  The intense chemistry between the two of them is undeniable, but Skylar feels he has to avoid the temptation so as not to trick her into being with him.  The anticipation and passion between them is great, and add in a little suspense of a stalker into the mix - this quick read is definitely entertaining.

Despite having gone into this story not know that it was part of a series, it was still enjoyable. Reading Chenery’s Beowulf & Roxie would make much more of the back story make sense – however, to a reader new to the series, this is perfectly understandable without having done just that!

When Skylar sees Victoria Secret's model Braelyn walking across the street, the urge to take her as his mate is undeniable. Skyler wants to take it slow with Braelyn, but the vixen seems to be testing his patience when everything she does is so seductive. Just when Skyler thinks he has everything in control, he finds that Braelyn has a stalker.

Out of all the books, this is was my favorite so far. I really liked Sklyar a lot, he was sweet and the way Braelyn puts him through her tests because she often has men just trying to get in her pants just because of who she is, is hilarious at times.

After i started reading this series i heard about a series that is the beginning of how Roxie and her husband got together... If you are planning on reading this series i would suggest reading the other series first (not after you've read this series like i will be doing) but anyways this was a wonderful series to read

I really liked the book. How the hero broke the news about himself and proved himself to the heroine. It is a must read.

My only complaint is with the publisher where they do not show this book is part of series and what number it is in the series.

My only issue with these books is that they are fairly one dimensional and each is a cookie cutter copy of the others in the two series. There are small differences, but they really follow much the same path. Add in way more sex than plot, and they just aren't my jam. 1.5 stars for most of them.
