About the author

Après des études à l'Ecole normale supérieure et une agrégation de lettres, il est aujourd'hui professeur de français dans un collège. Boulimique de lecture durant toute son enfance, il s'essaye assez tôt à l'écriture et publie son premier roman en 1984. Lorsqu'il écrit pour les adolescents, c'est avec le souci constant de leur offrir des livres qu'il aurait aimé lire lui-même à leur âge. Il se fie donc à ses souvenirs pour écrire et profite du contact avec ses élèves qui ont l'âge de ses héros de romans. Depuis 1994, Jean-Philippe Arrou-Vignod est consultant sur les collections de fiction de Gallimard Jeunesse et est directeur de la nouvelle collection Hors Piste.

Miał być przyjemny powrót do dzieciństwa, ale strasznie się rozczarowałam. Zapamiętałam to o wiele lepiej. Średnia próba powtórzenia sukcesu Mikołajka i do tego fatalnie się zestarzała. Nie polecam tego dawać dzieciom ani sobie

So. I have bought this book because it was advertised as "new pals of Nicholaus" and the obligatory reading for every Nicholaus's fan. I am a big fan of Nicholaus. Actually, I am such a fan that I have read the books of Sempe and Goscinny in English, Polish and German.
And this is why I have bought this book. I've just read it in Polish, because I couldn't find it in English and I don't know French. And I can say just one: total dissapointment. TOTAL. I have never read such a poor copy of other book. The same chapter idea, the same character idea, the same country idea, the same plot idea... But in many, many ways worse as the orignal. First of all, the strange idea of six boys named John: John A, John B, John C... I guess this should be the catch. Well, sorry, didn't bring me to laugh. I am confused if it is a book for children or for adults, if for children: why so many swear words and bad examples, like giving a dog to the shelter, throwing food away... I don't know if it is the translato's fault, but the language of the book is trying to be exactly the same as the one in Nicholaus. Unfortunately, it didn't work - the same phrazes as in Nicholaus are not refreshing this book, only making it a cheap repetition. The same is the idea of the characters too: main characters and their friends at school, one has a very rich father, the other is fat etc. The book should take place in the 60's - 70' last century but some of the descriptions were much to modern for me. None of the chapters ends in a funny, clever end.
Perhaps I should not compare this book to Nicholaus, but there is no other possibility: when you read this book, you see the similarities immediately.
You can read Nicholaus as a child and as an adult and it is always funny. Of course in different ways, but I have always laughed loud. Reading this book I have from time to time smiled. A little smile. Sorry, didn't work for me at all.

Les histoires des Jean Quelque Chose m'ont accompagnée toute mon enfance et mon adolescence. J'ai tellement relu ce livre que je crois qu'aujourd'hui je le connais encore par cœur. Parmi les livres qui ont marqué ma vie de lectrice, celui ci à une place de choix, et ses personnages rejoignent le cercle très fermé de ceux qui sont devenus comme des membres de la famille.

It took me almost a year to read this book in Polish, but I appreciated the humor and lighthearted nature of the story. This would be a great book to read aloud to your children at night before bed. It celebrates so much about being a child!
