Jensen hoped she’d never need Shimmerspell again. But now someone is stalking her, someone claiming to be the Lady of the Lake. To make matters worse, witches and dragons have come out to play. Now Jensen must figure out how to harness her power and accept her destiny before she ends up losing everyone she loves.
Limerick (book 2 in the Shimmerspell trilogy) starts off one week after Shimmerspell ends.
Jensen, the newly discovered Nixie, is having nightmares in which people are reading her a limerick about ‘a girl of the sea’, a siren called Brennan is following her for some unknown reason, she is dating the pixie Liam, and living with her newly discovered Dad Dermott.
But that isn’t even the tip of Jensen’s iceberg of troubles, she’s being stalked and attacked by dragons, discovering that her best friend is actually a witch, and worrying that Liam is cheating on her, and she still needs to work out how to use the Shimmerspell (the power to move between the mortal realm and the pixie realm) that she had somehow inherited in book 1.
This is an interesting book, there’s plenty of action, and it does set up book 3 nicely, but there doesn’t seem to be many answers such as what the limerick is about, and how Jensen must really use the Shimmerspell. Hoping that book 3 will have some answers! 8/10 (Book length: 1185 kindle locations) (Downloaded for free)
The second story keeps the fantastic adventure and excitement from the first story, with the great addition of dragons and witches. Great characters with fun and adventure. Jensen is a great female lead character. As this story is short I do not want to go into much detail but you can check out my review on goodreads or my website. I love the pace these stories keep. They are very entertaining with twists and excitement that you don't quite see coming. I find them very imaginative and it's nice to read short stories to break up the longer books. Perfect for weekend, beach or before bed reading.
Warning: Severe cliffhanger up ahead, turn back now or continue forth with utter bravery.
First thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book, reading Limerick was like a shot of adrenaline, it really kept me chipper in my stressful times with school and life. Reading this book took me to another world where I was able to put reality aside and emerse myself in a magical world in iteself. It was action packed, emotional and fun, what more can you ask for?! I loved that we were able to see Jensen change, seeing her become more of a stronger character. We learn more about her and what she never knew about herself. The only thing I was sad about was the end, this book went by way too quickly, I loved being emersed in this world and being sucked back out was a bit unbalanced. But It definately is a book I would recommend to anyone, there is nothing to prevent a younger reader from reading this book.
Summary:
Jensen is thrust once more back into this new world. The more she learns the more she has reason to run away from everything but she doesn't. She stands up for herself and is determined to discover the truth. She learns about who she is but isn't fully aware of the strong powers that reside in herself.
Soon she finds herself being stalked and is in danger of being killed by the dragons and she doesn't know why. She demands for the truth and gets herself caught up in heart break, turmoil and pain, she doesn't see what way is up and what way is down. but she soon discovers a secret her friends Zoe has been hiding from her and the two of them along with Liam and the siren march into the dragon's den, demanding for this all to end and Zoe's sister.
Last Thoughts:
I would recommend this to any teenager, it's a very enjoyable read. I simply cannot wait till the next book because the cliff hanger it left you was one I simply can't wait to find the end. Spencer is an imaginative writer and I cannot wait to read what else she has to offer. The only thing I wish is that they were to be longer but then again they wouldn't be considered a novella huh?! I give this book 4 and half stars for her creativity and her ability to write such a compelling story.
Limerick continues with Jensen, Zoe, Liam and others from the first title. Jensen finds out more about herself and her friends. She and Liam are together until she catches him with his ex, Shelby, and it devastates her. We are introduced to dragons in the second installment and Jensen's secret is revealed to Zoe when she can't control her glamour and her faerie side shows who she really is. How will Zoe react when she finds out and what will Jensen do when Zoe reveals a secret about herself?
Limerick is just as good as Shimmerspell is. I really dislike writing reviews on sequels cause I am always afraid that I might ruin something for someone, so I am just gonna say that it was really good also. I like when Jensen is trying to control her new powers and starts using water to do it. Zoe seems like a really great friend for Jensen too. I love that she is there for Jensen when Lauren is no where to be found and she has to live with Dermott. I dislike that he won't let her and Liam see each other though. What gives him the right to finally come into her life and tell her that she can't see Liam. That just seems to complicate things further for Jensen. Her dad may be a wizard, but he was gone for 16 years of her life and I don't think that he should have a say on all the things going on in Jensen's life. I really liked Luca, the dragon boy. He always seemed to show up just at the right time to help Jensen.
There is even more action and secrets revealed in the sequel so you won't be bored of this book. Still plenty of romance, betrayal and even some dragon slaying and spell casting. You can't go wrong with that. Head over to Amazon or your favorite ebook seller and pick up a copy. It is so worth it and I think that you'll agree with me that Kimberly Spencer is a new author to watch out for. She is creative and her stories come to life as you read them.
Well how do i review this book. It was a weird one for me. There were a few to many holes and unexplained things, but it was engaging and i definitely want to read the next book, so i really don't know how to explain it.
First the bad.
1. We still do not get a satisfactory explanation of Jenson and her powers and how she came to be. 2. There is still far to much of the Twilight Effect going on 3. There always seems to be something happening but we get no reasons for it. 4. New creatures and enemies are not explained to us. Like the dragons, where did they come from, why do they do what they do. 5. There is not enough screen time for Jensens father. 6. The books are to short, maybe if the Author spent a little bit more time detailing things and explaining the reason for things they might last a little longer. 7. The book just ends, with little to no explanation of what went on and why. (sensing a theme here) 8. The action is a bit, well there is no other way to say it, Blah. The climatic scene in this book is a battle with Dragons and yet we see little to none of it, We follow Jensen who somehow manages to stay away from almost all of the action dispite the fact it is taking place ion a cave. And the "Baddie" goes down far to easily.
The Good
1. It is compelling, i want to know what happens, this is the first sign of a good story for me 2. The characters really do have great potential, they are just a bit underdone for me 3. The use of all sorts of different mythologies and folklore makes the creatures and magic very exciting. 4. The language is good, it is easy and enjoyable to read.
And unfortunately that is where the good points end.
I would recommend adding this series to your reading list, but don't rush to put it at the top of your list.
I am interested to see if the third book aill atone for all, guess we have to wait and see
AKSJLAFUSOJFLSJLASUAOHJ?! I am sorry, but this review had to start out with me getting my feelings out there. Like What the HECK?! That ending, was a complete and total cliffhanger. Seriously guys! I may throw myself off a cliff if I do not know what happens next, very VERY soon. [:
This was a GREAT fast, and I do mean fast, read. I only wish this book was longer, like way longer. There was so much that could have been drawn out, feelings that could have came more into view, and a giant mystery when it comes to guys could have been more detailed, but I guess that is how they get you to keep reading huh? I love how you got to find out more about the people you already thought were one thing but turn out to be something completely different. And the love factor in this book had me wanting to PUNCH someone. Until you actually find out what happened, but still then you don't get much more.
My ONLY problem with this book was how short it was. at only 68 pages it felt a big rushed to me and it would have been 5 stars if it drew out the action scenes and added a little bit more depth to relationships and questions stirring between different people. But Kimberly Spencer has a great series on her hands, with a great story line and amazing characters I instantly fall into her world and it doesn't let go until the last page.
Kimberly, I am on the edge of my seat waiting for book number three, because "Long Live The King" has my mind reeling with questions.
Limerick is the 2nd novella in The Faerie Tale Girl series by Kimberly Spencer and it picks up about a week after Shimmerspell.
Kimberly Spencer is a tease! Limerick ended with a cliffhanger like Shimmerspell. I feel like she is feeding us a novel one chapter at a time with these novellas. It’s like riding a huge roller coaster, just as you climb to the top of the big hill and you can see the long drop the fun park worker puts on the brakes and says “I’ll be back in five”.
With this installment, we get to see more into Jensen’s new found world of the fae with the addition of witches and dragons. The same secondary characters, Zoe, Liam, and Dermott are present; plus a few new characters.
Jensen is really starting to grow into her powers and learning that everything and everyone for that matter, is not what they appear to be. I can’t wait to see what she faces next.
I recommend this novella to anyone that likes Fae YA books.
A very good sequel to the first novella, it starts off a little oddly in that a good chunk of time has passed, but doesn't keep you lost for very long. You get to know Jensen's "dad" some more, learn about her powers, and find some very interesting information about her best friend's family.
The romance was a little off in this book. I felt that we were on a paranormal romance track in the first novella and the second was "let's focus on more lore, but oh I have a romance. Let's break it up temporarily!" kinda thing. Which is okay, but it didn't transition very well and left me squirming without a real reason why I was feeling that way.
BUT I did like this novella better than the first in that more things were coming together. I am definitely going to spend some money to buy the sequel AND the prequel as well, I liked it that much!
The second novella in a trilogy, Limerick is unusual in that it was stronger and more compelling than the first in the series, Shimmerspell. Usually the second book is just is kind of a "time-waster", but not so with Limerick. It did end in a cliff-hanger, but I expected that. This is a really enjoyable YA fantasy/faery story that I think my students will love. Do read the first novella before this one. There is a prequel that is next on my list!
Also, I admire the author, Kimberly Spence. In my review of Shimmerspell, I noted some editing mistakes which I feel detracts from the storyline. Ms. Spence not only read my review, but she wrote to me, thanked me, and graciously allowed me to read Limerick . What a class act!
I liked it but it was too short wanted a lot more of the book. I hate having to wait to find out what happens next.
Jensen is now living with her dad in the second book. She gets to stay in the same town. Zoe finds out about her but she also finds out about Zoe being a witch.
Zoe twin Shelby still hates Jensen. Shelby makes Liam kiss her in front of Jensen. later Shelby is kidnapped by mistake thinking that she is Zoe Jensen friend. So they need to rescue her from Dragons.
Its magic, adventure and about friendships. I enjoyed it and want more books. I was given the ebook in exchange for honest review.
This one is much better than the first novella. Things were better explained and the plot thickens. However, it was too short. I really liked to read more and I would like to see progress or coming-of-age for Jensen.
Jensen has been left, alone and abandoned, with her newly found wizard father, Dermott. She's still a little lost without Lauren who seems to have vanished into thin air. Liam, her new faerie boyfriend, has been trying to keep her distracted, but Zoe's twin sister Shelby, wants her boyfriend back, and she'll do everything she can to break the tentative bond Liam and Jensen have built. Throw into the mix stalker dragon boys and a secret that Zoe hasn't shared, and Jensen's life is about to get real interesting. And on top of it all, Brennen has taken a real interest in her safety or lack of it.
Limerick by Kimberly Spencer is an excellent addition to her Faerie Tale Girl series. In this addition, Jensen finds her life turned upside down first by Shelby and Liam, then she overhears a conversation between Dermott and (she thinks) Lauren. Why would he lie and say he hasn't heard anything from her? Then, Brennen, the siren with the magical voice, keeps popping back into her life, and she sooo doesn't need him. And she's recently noticed stalkers, of the male variety, looking surprisingly a lot like dragons. A few weeks ago, the thought would seem ludicrous, now it is more than likely and alarmingly all too real. What is going to happen in her life next? Once again, I'm left hanging and wondering...
Limerick was a fast fun little read, just what I needed between books. It's novella length, and I'd recommend reading Shimmerspell first, it lays down the foundation for the series (click here to read my review). I had fun with this short story, and can't wait to take a peek at the next in the series, Lore, which is actually an inbetween story within Books 1 & 2. Triquetra, Book 3 in the Faerie Tale Girl series should be released sometime in September 2011. It's my opinion that Kimberly Spencer is an author to watch, I've fallen for her series. The only thing that could make it better is a tiny bit of editing, not that it really matters to the story. This is a sweet little YA paranormal romance that I'd recommend to all YA lovers, so much fun. Kimberly Spencer's books can be found at B&N, Amazon, and Smashwords. 5 out of 5 fairy kisses for this short little novella from this reader.
I really liked Spencer's first novella, "Shimmerspell," giving it 4.5 stars. But "Limerick" was just that much *better*. I cannot wait for novella 3! I have to know what happens! Limerick's got all the elements I liked: romantic tension, betrayal, mystery and the dialogue! I couldn't go four pages without laughing out loud, snickering, or at the very least a big grin. Spencer has a believable narrative voice and you can almost "hear" sassy Jensen giving her verbal, one-two punch. Love that!
Spencer picks up where she left off in Shimmerspell and the action ensues. Like Shimmerspell, this is a very-fast paced book. Since it is novella-length, that is something to get used to if you're accustomed to reading a full-length work. But I liked it. The reader feels dropped off in the middle and whisked away to get caught up with the MC. I like a book that rolls along and this one does. There's dragons and a new love interest developing, and we're still not sure about Jensen's potential. The author unveils this piece by piece as the story rockets along and we're left wondering about what Jensen will become and who she will be with? Who can she trust? Are they protecting her for the right reasons? The reasons she would want? I really enjoyed that element of intrigue. Totally fun read.
I hope this author does a full-length novel, it'd be tremendous!
Book 3 will come out soon and I've heard there may be a compilation of the trilogy into a paperback or eCopy format. With those book covers, that would be a great addition to the shelf!
*I won a free copy of this e-book in a LibraryThing Member Giveaway*
wish it was a lil bit longer..it's a cliffhanger...and would really urge you to read the next sequel of the book, i can't wait for it... too bad, i thought the stalker, or the lady of the lake(Fake),,,will have more exposes rather than just at the end..and giving us the idea that she is brennen's step sister, and besides her reason was not yet unknown...but then maybe,...it was really meant to be like that,..for the next sequel will answer my many questions..and then the gorgeous Luca,..what will happen to him... good thing, i thought zoe is just her bestfriend, but then it really was a surprising thing that she and her sister is so much more than that...read the book and find out yourself.. and by the way... liam's true character has not yet rally unrevealed..there so much more,..the story is keeping... it was a great book, though only for short read...i wish8x,...it will become a novel... the story is full of twist, unpredictable but still enjoyable... highly recommended..!:D
Jensen hoped she’d never need Shimmerspell again. But now someone is stalking her, someone claiming to be the Lady of the Lake. To make matters worse, witches and dragons have come out to play. And Jensen must figure out how to harness her power and accept her destiny before she ends up losing everyone she loves.
Limerick is the second book in the Shimmer Trilogy, a novella book series that I find to be surprisingly addictive. Jensen had a lot of info dropped on her in book one and she went straight into the deep end of the reality of her life, that she is half Fae and her family isn’t who they claim to be. Jensen retains that bravery she showed from the first book and puts it to use. Her voice is also really good and I enjoyed her personality for the most part, since she’s the narrator it makes the book really easy to read and get into. I really like the inclusion of the Lady of the Lake myth and it’s really interesting to see how that pans out. There is also a variety of fantasy creatures involved in this one, including Dragons though they do take a much more human appearance of course. I wish that some of the creatures had been explained a bit more, I think the book would have been better for it. There were also a few issues with the romance and the resulting quarrels that came with it, because it honestly just didn’t work for me. Of course there is also the matter of the cliffhanger…which drives me crazy! I love that they keep me interested but at the same time I hate that it cuts off with no answer, ugh. Overall I think it’s a promisingly series and while it has it’s issues I enjoyed it for what it is, though if more was added to the book I wouldn’t object because I think it would benefit from a tad more depth.
Limerick suffered from much the same problems as Shimmerspell. Once again, it could have used a good editor. It needed proofreading due to the misuse or absence of punctuation marks, most notably the missing commas in direct address. It read more like theater scenes following a storyline but missing the props and the scenery i.e. background details and other fillers. If the author had taken the time to flesh out each scene, and taken the time to develop the characters, it would have made for a more satisfying read. Once again, due to the absence of the above, the pacing was rushed. The plot was weak. It kind of reminds me of the plots of a TV show episode - superficial and easily tidied up. There were some things left unexplained in both the first novella and this one, such as
What I did like about it were how the "dragons" were portrayed, which was quite unique. And Jensen's voice. I also thought that the voices of the characters were pretty close to teenager-like, as were Jensen's reactions to the discoveries about Liam and Dermott.
I really liked the first book in this series, so I was excited to read Limerick. While it didn't disappoint completely, it also had many of the same flaws as its predecessor. This book would be a million times better if it was just made into an actual novel instead of a novella (and a really short novella at that). If this was meant to be the beginning of a longer story later on, that would be one thing, but because it isn't everything gets so rushed. I barely have enough time to grasp and be excited about one concept before another is being introduced. This also makes the plot a little confusing at times, and the characters relationships suffer. I feel there wasn't enough development between them. I was really looking forward to seeing more with Jensen and Liam, but that was rushed through as well. This is a GREAT story, and if the author took the time to flesh it out and make it longer it would surpass great and be AMAZING.
That being said, I do plan on reading the next installment. Jensen is a really interesting character, and the twists and turns of who she is and her heritage are enough to keep me coming back to find out more. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a quick read, and isn't so concerned about a fast paced story.I would probably rate this more 3.5 stars, but seeing as how I am going to read the next one I figured I'd go the extra half.
"Jensen hoped she'd never need Shimmerspell again, but now someone is stalking her, someone claiming to be the Lady of the Lake. To make matters worse, witches and dragons have come out to play. I must admit that after reading the first A Faerie Tale Girl Novella, I wasn't sure I needed to continue reading the next installment. But thanks to Ms. Spencer's awesome ability to leave us hanging I bought Limerick the same day. And now I am hooked.
Limerick is well written and chalked full of twists and surprises. This short novella manages to have you at the edge of your seat wondering who is friend and who is foe. The additions of the witches and dragons only add to the excitement of the fantastical faerie world.
The dialogue seems to have improved since the first novella and the characters have acquired a depth to them that truly makes the story enjoyable. And as always, Kimberly Spencer's descriptive writing and the way she leaves us hanging has me excited to read the next Novella.
I read and reviewed Shimmerspell by Kimberly Spencer awhile back, and I really enjoyed it, even though I was slightly confused with what was going on. I found that reading Limerick, which is the sequel to Shimmerspell, as well as a short story prequel entitled Lore, things got clearer and I found I understood the story better.
I actually really enjoy this series, the more I read it. There's something about Kimberly Spencer's writing style that's really relatable to a teenager. It's very quirky and funny when Jensen is talking to her friends. And the descriptions are very vivid, so you get a clear picture of what's going on.
I still have the same issue with Limerick as I did with Shimmerspell. Things happen so quickly! This book could be twice as long if only things slowed down a bit. It's almost like an action movie, where there's explosions every second (metaphorical explosions). These books are good, but they could honestly be great if they were paced slower.
This was a cute and rather interesting novella for the young adults. Though I hated how short it was. I really wish there was more but, I guess that means that I just need to pick up the next one and keep going till I am full of what I want. The writer took her time to round out the situation and there was nothing in the lack of feel for the characters. Some made you laugh others made you cry there were even a few that made you want to shake them for the anger you felt at how they were acting, or treating one another. I can't wait to see what happens to the next one. And look forward to more to come.
Limerick is the second book in the trilogy and my favorite. This is novella-length, at roughly 55 pages, but, in my opinion, the length does not detract from the story. The story is full and the characters are fully formed.
There is far more action than romance in this book, but that fit with the direction of the story. I like that this book doesn't necessarily follow the "good vs. evil" formula of most fantasy. There is that theme, of course, but the lines aren't clearly drawn. There were times when those who were supposed to be "bad" were cast as "good" and vice versa. It kept the story interesting and the plot engaging. Definitely a little bit darker. Next up is Oathbound.
Why can't a fantasy sit on its own? Why must Arthur's mythology be the only definition of a fantasy?
I don't understand the main character. So swiftly the girl goes from losing her sister to being adopted by her teacher. Felt I missed layers of adaptation to the new situation. I'm still not sure I like her. She seems unable to tell the truth and gets upset when others around her are equally dishonest or not forthright. Had to look up Nixie on the internet as it wasn't explained enough in the book. That seemed to be true of the other beings.
But the book held my interest enough to finish and start the next book in the series.
I think I liked the firt book better. Limerick felt a little rushed at times and although I read this book while a little ill I can't help but think there was the odd plot hole and I often felt like I was missing a line or 2.
I rather enjoyed book 1 one and I think if these books had been given more time we would have had a full good story rather than 3 short stories. Spencer has the makings of a great book.
This second story was just as mesmerizing as the first and only disappointing in that it didn't offer more to the characters and story. This could have been a great novel and it leaves me hanging.
