Powerful Seduction
Christian Delornay has observed so many illicit liaisons at his mother's house of pleasure he regards sex as merely an enjoyable pastime, certainly not an act of love. Passionate Surrender
Desperate to escape her past, Elizabeth "Smith" is happy to accept Christian's offer of work. She is prepared to serve his every need, yet she refuses to reveal her most intimate desires. But in the hands of a master it is impossible to deny her own wanton yearnings, and she soon succumbs to her secret longing for pure carnal pleasure. . .

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kate Pearce was born in England in the middle of a large family of girls and quickly found that her imagination was far more interesting than real life. After acquiring a degree in history and barely escaping from the British Civil Service alive, she moved to California and then to Hawaii with her kids and her husband and set about reinventing herself as a romance writer.
She is known for both her unconventional heroes and her joy at subverting romance clichés. In her spare time she self publishes science fiction erotic romance, historical romance, and whatever else she can imagine. You can find Kate on katepearce.com.
Ok...I've thought about it and I'm not as angry as I was before. SO, I will review this with a clear head...
I am all for erotica when done right. I know that's subjective and I'm not saying Kate Pearce isn't talented! To write erotica is actually probably pretty difficult, if you want it done "properly". I mean, anyone can write about sex, but if you want sensual and exciting, then you have to really put forth the effort.
Kate took, what could have been a cool plot, and turned it into a circus. The more I read, the more unbelievable it became. Sex aside, the story became so disjointed I simply could not see a satisfying ending.
Her characters were not fleshed out, just cardboard cutouts that both happen to like a lot of sex. I never, ever felt connected to either. At first the heroine was supposed to be mysterious, and that's what drove the hero to take interest, but that can only drive chemistry for so long. Where was the spark? Was it their bedroom antics that connected them? If that's the case, then that's not romance, that's just sex. HEA doesn't survive on that. And if that is all we are to expect from this book, then fine! I am ok with that! But don't tote this as a romance.
The sex was gratuitous and not that sexy. It's simply not my style to read about how many objects we can fit into limited space. I'm not deducting any stars for that because I knew what I was getting into when I bought the book. I have just come to realize that while, yes, I really to prefer to have on page intimacy in my books, I do not want the plot to suffer for it. Give me Mary Balogh any day of the week, not this drivel.
Kate Pearce has set a standard for Erotic Historical Romance by which all others will be measured for me. SIMPLY CARNAL is 300 pages of sexual decadence, debauchery, and lust interspersed with a story filled with scandal, betrayal, past hurts, and new love that had me riveted from beginning to end.
SIMPLY CARNAL is the seventh book in the House of Pleasure series and it features Christian Delornay who is Madame Helene's (the proprietress of the House of Pleasure) son. As you can imagine, working in a house of ill-repute for since he was eighteen has skewed his view on relationships. He takes his pleasure where he likes and doesn't let anyone get close because he's learned from his past that when you let people close, they leave. But when Elizabeth Smith, a young widow with something to hide, walks into the House of Pleasure, he's attracted and intrigued by this woman he can't figure out. He ends up offering her a job and a place in his bed.
Elizabeth is on the run from her past and she knows that she can count on no one. She will accept Christian's offer of a job and being his mistress if only to help her figure out her plans to get herself out of the mess she finds herself in. What neither one of them expects is to find an undeniable pleasure in each other's arms.
Hold on to your knickers, folks because this book is HOT...boiling, sweltering, scorching, and whatever other synonyms you can think of. SIMPLY CARNAL was just that--carnal.
Christian and Elizabeth had an unbelievable chemistry and an innate way of getting to the root of the other's desires. It sometimes felt absolutely voyeuristic reading about what they were getting up to. But of course, that didn't stop me from reading because I was completely hooked. I loved how in Elizabeth, Christian seemed to find his perfect match. A well-refined woman on the outside, a hellion in bed, and someone who really didn't get frightened or scandalized easily.
Besides the sex--and there was A LOT of that--SIMPLY CARNAL did actually have a plot, and an excellent one at that. There was plenty of backstory on Christian and his relationship with Madame Helene, which was very tenuous at best. Also, Elizabeth's past was filled with so many secrets, I felt like we kept learning a new one with each successive chapter. We also have great secondary characters that we've seen throughout the series that help round out the story.
Overall, SIMPLY CARNAL is an extremely steamy novel with an intricate story line and great characters. It's not for the faint of heart because there is plenty of sex in all types of configurations (M/F, M/F/M, M/M/F and some brief M/M scenes), but those of use who like their romance with a lot spice will not be disappointed. You don't have to read the other books in the series to enjoy this one either. Even if you don't usual read historical romances, I think this book will change your mind.
Found the heroine too enigmatic. She was dishonest throughout the entire book. I thought the final resolution to her 'mystery' felt muddled and did not seem to jibe with what how much in danger she seemingly was in the early parts of the book.
Also the book wasn't very sexy. The heroine had major sexual issues and I thought the hero 'cured' her a little too easily.
I am so bummed! This wasn't at all what I wanted. Yes, it has my sex I love and my HEA, but I just couldn't "get into" it. I'm not very articulate with words, which is why I never really "review" books, but I felt like this story was just... just. However, I like Ms. Pearce and I know that not every book can be perfect for me, so I'll wait patiently for her next one.
Ah, finally another dose from House of Pleasure series. I'm so, so happy that I finally grabbed and devoured it to heart's content. I took my time enjoy the book and I'm pleased.
It's Christian's story. If you're one of HOP fans, I'm sure you've learnt about him. He's Madame Helene's son and he is very well-known for his cold-blooded character. He pushed people away from him because he's afraid of fondness. For him, that kind of emotion is somehow lethal. It could hurt worst and perhaps would bring permanent damage to one's life. He got a history before and it wasn't pleasant. He even resented his mother for one particular reason. Reason he's afraid to care and love.
Our heroine, Elizabeth Smith/Walker is Christian's lover. I didn't know what to make of her only that I think she's amazing. She's likable, beautiful, yes, and something about her attracts men and makes them wanted her so badly. She's also one hell of mysterious lady. She's really good at hiding herself in the dark. She's good in keeping secret. That practically made me crazy because I was curious about who she is. I kept expecting the expected and unexpected only in end received the another different unexpected. Honestly, it was killing me but I enjoyed the mystery. Loved it even. It made me couldn't stop turning the page and forgot the world and time.
Passion and chemistry are all over. When she's with Ambrose, I felt them. When she's with Paul, I felt them. And of course, when she's with Christian, I felt them too! Immensely and it's just awesome. I'm impressed. Not just that, people in the pleasure house fond with her. It's just wow, you know. The romance was mild. Well, it's understandable since Christian isn't a guy who shows his true feelings. Even when he said the magic word for the first time to Elizabeth, I honestly found it quite adorable. I think perhaps that's just me.
The steamy scenes was wowww. I'm well aware this book/series got: BDSM - I could handle that. M/M, M/F, F/F - I could handle that too. Anal sex - a bit gruesome but somehow I survived. Menage a trois M/M/F - perhaps because it's historical fiction somehow I managed. I don't know if I could handle reading menage a trois if it's contemporary fiction though. Anyway, I haven't tried to read one. Yet. Perhaps soon. When I'm ready.
I can't wait for Simply Voracious. Out in August. Oh, that's a long, long wait. Damn, I'm in vain. I hope the series keeps continue. I'm so not wish this series to end.
Well, I certainly screwed up here. Somehow, in my effort to start reading this highly acclaimed series by Kate Pearce, I managed to pick up her latest book instead of her first. And I only just now realised it, after searching the title on goodreads. Good grief!
Now I'm wondering how much backstory I've missed.... regardless, as a Kate Pearce newbie, I found this book ...different, from everything I usually read. And I have to admit I enjoyed it.
As someone who doesn't read erotica (and this is DEFINITELY erotica!), I was a little shocked. Be forwarned- this book contains 3-ways, voyeurism, you name it. As well as very hot sexy scenes. Despite my discomfort with some of the scenes
The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of five is because of the lack of a storyline. The heroine was incredibly secretive throughout the whole novel, and it seemed in the last 10 pages that the whole plot was revealed and they discovered they loved each other. Happy ever after, all wrapped up neat and tidily.
That may be standard fare for erotic novels (as I know this is true for romance novels, which is why I don't read them), but I guess I was expecting a bit more story, with the sex on the side. That being said, I now suspect that I missed a ton of character development, having not read the previous 20 or so novels. I'm going to go back out and pick up novel number 1, and give this author another try!
I was very disappointed in every aspect of this book. The plotline involving the mysterious Elizabeth was only mildly interesting. The hero, Christian, meets his half-brother, Richard, for the first time and I thought it was an unbelievable coincidence that Richard was involved in the mystery surrounding Elizabeth. There were about seven sex scenes and, oddly enough, I was only interested in the first one.
We were introduced to a new sex club called Demon Club and I would like to read more about that in future books.
Despite my disappointment, this book is a keeper because it’s part of a great series that I hope will never end. The next installment, book 8, is called Simply Voracious and is about one of the employees we’ve read so much about in previous books, Paul. It’s due out in August 2012.
I received this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 Stars. I wasn't sure what this book was at first but the title should have tipped me off. It is erotica with a bit of romance thrown in. In the beginning I found it very difficult to read, the main reason being the abuse of the heroine , both in her past and her present. By the middle of the book I was very intrigued and wanted to find out the secrets she held. I ended up liking the hero towards the end as he finally comes to his senses, moves beyond his past to claim the present and future with the heroine. I didn't realise this was book no. 8 in a series until I read the other reviews.
One of the Better Entries in a Solid Historical Erotic Romance Series
Simply Carnal is the latest in Kate Pearce’s prolific and popular House of Pleasure series, set within a private sex club for the elite and high society in early 19th century England. Christian Delornay has all but taken over proprietorship of his mother Helene’s upper class brothel, but being surrounded by sex has left him jaded and cynical. He has no use for relationships and certainly not love, but when mysterious widow Elizabeth Smith walks through the doors offering her full services as an employee and mistress, Christian can’t help but be intrigued. Elizabeth is surrounded by secrets, nothing shocks or surprises her, and the two quickly enter into a mutually beneficial relationship.
Elizabeth’s story unravels slowly and carefully, and Christian unwittingly finds himself drawn to her despite his intentions to keep his distance and remain strictly about sex. He is that elusive, perfect rogue, really hardened and tough to crack. In the grand scheme of things, he does ultimately succumb fairly easily, but the journey of watching it is enjoyable. Elizabeth really is an enigma. From her name to her past, everything is a secret. Until the last moments of the book, truths about her are still being revealed, which is a really interesting technique here. She is made sympathetic, however, through her interactions with Christian. With him she is vulnerable, and she is redeemed from her lies and secrets.
Kate Pearce’s historical erotic romance series has been hit or miss. The characterization at times is inconsistent, some of the plot points outlandish. Even in Simply Carnal, some of the twists and turns are sloppy and kept from having their full effect. But when she writes a good book, it’s really good. Here Christian and Elizabeth complement each other in a way only they could. Christian’s heroine could only be a woman who will keep him guessing, and Elizabeth does that. I believed their story. And whereas in the past couple of books in the series the love scenes have grown shorter and less memorable, here they are passionate and meaningful. One scene in particular at the end that takes place at a rival establishment, the Demon Club which should be explored further and opens up the possibility of many more new, fresh stories, is absolutely on fire and may be one of the author’s best sex scenes to date.
This is a series worth reading, and Christian and Elizabeth’s story definitely included.
For anyone following this series (and if you aren’t you really should be), Simply Carnal is Helene’s son, Christian Delornay's story. He's seen so much fornicating in his lifetime that it has ceased to be anything special for him. Elizabeth "Smith" comes to the pleasure house owned by his mother, hoping to meet with Helene. Elizabeth is bedraggled, says she's a widow, and is willing to sell her body because she has no other choice. Christian likes her spunk, but says he can’t employ her in her present half-starved condition, but offers her a meal and bed for the night. He says to do any less or to let her starve to death would be bad for business. He has compassion but doesn’t often let it show. A week later she’s still there, feeling fortified by the food, shelter, and safety she has been provided. Helene tells Christian he doesn’t have what it takes to run the pleasure house, and he says he has plans to make the business thrive despite the increasing competition from other establishments.
Then Helene meets Elizabeth and suggests Christian hire her as his assistant. A very straightforward Elizabeth tells him she’s willing to do anything, including the use of her body. He still doesn’t believe she’s fully prepared to see what she would be getting herself into, but she assures him she has plenty of experience in carnal matters. As her situation is revealed, the tension is ratcheted up and so is the explosive passion between Elizabeth and Christian. The depth of characters in this series is amazing. I didn’t even realize how much I had missed some of the secondary characters (Paul, for example) until I started reading this. Kate Pearce has a way of writing very empathetic characters that are also charismatic, sensual and delightfully sexy. And speaking of sexy, Ms. Pearce continues to deliver lava-hot sex, book after book. Grab the oven mitts for this one.
If you haven’t read this series yet and you’re a fan of edgy, erotic historical romance, you have no idea what you’re missing. Simply Carnal has a twisted plot of deception, and life-changing passion. Brilliant!
I received this book as a GoodReads First Reads Giveaway.
I am not quite sure where to begin my review for this book... Not really sure what to expect, I jumped in and immediately liked the characters. I am generally pulled towards great use of the omniscient narrative - knowing how the characters are struggling with themselves and those around them (when done effectively like this author accomplishes quite nicely), really makes a good story great, the characters a bit more real, and ups the empathy for what the characters are going through I think.
Having, after the fact, discovering that this was several books in to the series, I will say that enough detail is given that I did not sense I was missing large parts of the story. I appreciate when an author can make each part of a series stand alone, but of course be enhanced with the complete and continuing stories features throughout the series as a whole.
Finally, if you are looking for a book that lives up to its series name and title...this is it. More often then not the page turning scenes between Christian and Elizabeth were quite intoxicatingly intense.
Overall, a great story with a complex plot with twists and unexpected revalations galore.
If you are looking for alpha males and innocent virgins who make tea, go to balls and swoon, this series is not for you. If you are looking for the typical standard "romance," look elsewhere.
There is a lot of graphic sex. Frankly, I'm not sure if the series should be classified as erotica or pornography. Be warned.
Having said that, I like the series. The characters have some psychological depth not found in the typical romance. How they behave sexually is a function of their experiences, their personal history. The characters express and confront their personal demons by way of something so visceral, so elemental, so primeval as sex.
Don't get me wrong. The books in this series ain't gonna win no Pulitzer prize. Hey, we're talking popular "romance" here.
However, if a reader is not offended by the graphic sex, and understands that sex is more than a purely physical experience, then this series is a decent read.
Hey fellow readers I don’t summarize the books (as there are always great full summaries written that I read myself).
I only give it my personal, general, summary of 5 stars to 1 star.
3 stars: This book is worth a read but didn’t really have me excited about interacting with the book where I could not put it down. It lacks the excitement and well roundness of my personal markers for a great read throughout the book.
Development and interest in main characters, secondary characters, humorous, movement of the book, writing/conversation and romantic/sexual content (1-2 scenes or too much unnecessary).
Read it once and that is enough for me.
However, if this book is part of a series, I would read the next book (pervious book) in the series as it would still peek my reading interest.
I’ll continue reading from this author. I wouldn’t cross the author out of my potential reads in the future.
Another wonderful addition to the Simply series. I really enjoyed this one. Elizabeth and Christian were well written for each other and they just worked as a couple. I liked how Kate Pearce didn't reveal everything about Elizabeth all at once and her evolution worked for me. It was great to see more to Christian's character besides the general pain in the butt that he has been in the previous novels. It seemed like Kate gave us a peak into other characters that she can write about in this one. I will be interested to read Simply Voracious to find out more about Paul. I also really want to read more about Ambrose as his story could really be something different for the series given his brief history thus far.
I have to admit that I don’t normally read historical romance books, but this story was too hot to miss out on. I actually won a signed copy through Goodreads, and I liked it so much I have to get the rest of this series.
This book was not what I’d expected. The story was intricate with twists and turns I never saw coming. The sex scenes were scorching, with ménages and some rough sex. The characters were well developed and had so much to overcome throughout the story. And the end was very satisfying.
I can’t wait to read more of this series, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys erotic romance—even if, like me, you don’t particularly care for historical romances. This was a wonderful world to get lost in.
I won this book on Goodreads!! I have had this book for a while hoping to be able to pickup the rest of the series before reading this one. I hate reading books out of order. But since I have been unable to find them in my local bargin book stores, and have not had the funds of my usual book buget, I could not wait any more.
I enjoyed the book and the idea of its storyline. I sometimes I felt like I was missing somthing and it was possibly just because I know I missed the first six stories that drove me crazy. I enjoyed the players in this book. IT WAS ONE VERY HOT BOOK~! Christian and Elizabeth's characters work well together for me. I now know I have to read the rest of House of Pleasure series. My birthdays coming so I will be requesting gift cards, fingers crossed!
Sexy and intriguing. Overall, enjoyed the plot and the character development. Loved the chemistry between Elizabeth and Christian. My main beef was, in the end, this was kind of a BDSM, and I wish I knew that, because it was the only aspect of their relationships I just didn't care for. He teaches her a lesson about her pleasure or something to that degree....despite her having just as much experience. The other beef I had was with the plot; I wished it wasn't rushed during the last 10% of the book to tie loose ends. I feel like the first two acts halted Elizabeth's true reason for being there, which I never forgot about, but we don't get hardly any info about it until maybe the end--same for much of the development between her and Christian. Again, it felt rushed to me.
I really liked this story in the House of Pleasure series. The story of Christian and Elizabeth was well written from their introduction until all secrets were revealed in the end. The mystery of Elizabeth 'Smith' kept me interested to see if Christian was going to like what he learned or not. Her secret somewhat paralleled Madame Helene's and I liked that because it brought Christian's past to the forefront. Now he had to deal with his feelings instead of pushing them aside. I liked Elizabeth and she was the right woman for Christian. The House of Pleasure series is one of my favorites to read about and look forward to the next one this summer.
(March) 3.5*. This was good but not great. I have read them all and I think the first two (Simply Sexual - Peter and Simply Sinful-Val) and Simply Insatiable (Minshom's book-talk about taking a villian and making him a great, albeit unusual, hero!) are my favorites! There was an overabundance of sex in here, but the story got kind of lost. If KP had taken out two or three sex scenes and included more story to explain what exactly was Elizabeth's big secret as well as how to help her it would have moved this book up to a 4* for me. Look forward to reading Paul's story next!
Another great book in a very good series! But again I remind everyone.....it's not for everyone. On a personal note, as far as my own personal taste, I would have liked for Christopher and Elizabeth to have experimented more in the house itself but that's just me. I still loved how Kate Pearce chose to represent both of them and I definitely LOVED reading of Christopher's personal growth ..... I also feel the end was a bit rushed, well, actually the Epilogue was. But none of these things takes away from the very 'different' type of story that is told in these books.
Once again Miss Pearce has written a story to have you reading until the wee hours of the morning. Well-written characters, who you want to have a happily ever after not just because, but because you want them to be happy. A little bit of a mystery in this story, which made it an especially fun read. On to book 8. How many are left? I hope a lot more.
He likes violence with his sex and she likes to fight as well. May make folks uncomfortable as it flirts with non-consensual sex. Her keeping secrets was annoying and at times the story defied believability but in the end I wanted to know.

I couldn’t get past the consent issues in this book. The demon club is basically a bunch of rapists and the end made no sense. This big rescue of someone who did not need rescuing at extreme risk to Elizabeth who has been raped and beaten enough in her life as it is.

Better than most in the series, with a more complex plot and cast of characters. Kate Pearce keeps you interested in the people and the pleasure house, and isn't afraid to push through some interesting taboos.
Kate Pearce’s “Simply” series is one about complicated personal and sexual relationships, people who are battling their own demons and survivors. This - as the rest of them - is not a typical historical romance, so if you are looking for a traditional heterosexual romance with a straightforward HEA, this isn’t for you. If, however, you already read and liked some previous installments or enjoy some non-traditional erotica with a great plot around it, this is another winner. Christian is a character we’ve seen previously and a dive into his thoughts and needs is beautifully do e over the course of this story. Elizabeth is another complicated character with her own trauma and past, the unraveling of which adds quite a bit to the book. There are other characters of note, such as Christian’s parents and Paul St Clare, which were a welcome sight. I was disappointed to not get a Lisette and Gabriel sighting, but they were mentioned aplenty. Look forward to reading Paul’s story now!
