Okay, this vomume proves that Ren knows how he feels but he doesn't aprove of his feelings. Or something like that at least. Else, I can't explain why he's pulling away and sticking with his girlfriend. I mean, she has some problems, sure, but they are just tiptoeing around her like she's a kid or something. Anyway, Daiki's romance is okay, but it just gets in the way of the actual story for me. Overall, I just love the way the writer can keep the interest high even though the story isn't that original and you know where it's heading. Still, it's great how the girl's feelings and struggles are presented.

"Nothing ever stays the same, does it?"

FFFFFFFF life's complicated. Like, I didn't have drama with dude's in high school. Sure, I had some guys pressuring me into giving them a chance for a date, but who wants to put up with that drama? I'm so glad I did my own thing, even if I never dated anyone. Because this manga right here, it's showing me things that my friends went through and I am so glad I never had this.

Except that whole unrequited thing that left me forever alone... LOL.

SO, Ren's finally realized he has feelings for Ninako. When I started this series, I was super apprehensive. I dislike cheaters, I never want to get divorced when I get married, and my parents who've been through rough times have been married for a LONG ass time. And they've never fooled around. Marriage is literally a commitment. And if you can't commit in the training wheels-dating-you'll never make it far.

To say I was really not wanting to start this because the story is focused around a guy liking someone other than his girlfriend irked me to say the least. And while handled well, it's still hard to read. See, Mayuka, Ren's girlfriend, has so much insecurity. I get it. If I were dating Ren I'd feel pretty average since girls gawk at him all the damn time. So I completely understand her when she thinks that if she becomes something irresistible, her boyfriend won't look at another girl. So Mayuka becomes a model. And it works. People think and believe she's gorgeous and confident. Yet her job takes time and because she's always working, Ren and Ninako grow closer and closer.

And the saddest thing is, Ninako isn't purposefully doing things to try and get him to like her. She is respectful. She keeps her distance, and Ren is the same. Except now this dude's starting to get to feely with her...to the point that it disturbs them both. And poor Mayuka. She fears breaking up due to her parent's divorce. And Ren vows they won't separate even as he sees and blacks out the image of Ninako in his mind.

Thankfully, to dial down that terrible FEELS fest, Daiki and Sayuri get some time to shine. It's bittersweet but works out.

And why does it have to be Ren? Because that's who Ninako likes. She can't turn her feelings off, so stop bashing her please. Haven't you ever liked someone no matter how much you tried to get rid of those feelings?

WHERE IS A MANGA WHERE THE HEROINE FALLS FOR THE OTHER GUY!?

Wow this volume had ALLLL THE DRAMA. I feel like I’m facing an inner battle of what’s wrong and what’s right lol. I love ando tbh hahah I feel like his character has changed really nicely and even though it was kinda insta love I like where his feelings for ninako are at. He is rlly sweet to her and I love it! Very much “I hate everyone but you” hahah I like that he’s jealous and willing to fight for who he loves! We love that🤭 he made sure he told ren how he feels bc EVERYONE can see ren feels some type of way for ninako. In this volume you definitely see that he notices the effect she has on him as well. He’s trying to distance himself bc he knows it’s wrong to feel this way when he has a gf. He definitely acts more free when he’s with ninako and it seems like mayuka kinda holds him back. This just gives me weird feelings for ninako bc yes I know she likes him but I HATE when other girls can’t respect that the guy they’re into has a gf idk😭 Idk where her intentions are. I just feel like they’re a mess lol but other than that crazy love square going on, I ADORE DAIKI AND SAYURI🫶 they’re so precious and I love love love their relationship!! They make such a great addition to the story I want more of them :))

Man, I just love this series! I can't get over the depth of our characters and really how everyone is laying something on the line, whether that ends positively or negatively.

I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but my heart really breaks for Ren. I feel he has hidden so much of himself from his girlfriend that it's just depressing. She does NOT know him and I think the ending was such a mic drop because HOPEFULLY this means people are going to actually see the other person's TRUE self. I honestly would love that for Ren so much.

Daiki has been a surprise to be honest. I'm really happy for him and how he hasn't gotten a "heartbreak story" so to speak. He really speaks up and just love how honorable this young man is, especially when him and a certain someone are on the beach. It speaks so much of his character.

And Ninako…

She continues to be such a beautiful character inside and out. She is so compassionate and is extremely observant. Yes, she sometimes is in her head a lot, but she thinks about others so much and I just love that about her.

Another excellent volume in this series!

This manga series are super dope, i am obsessed with every volume. I just love how the author gives character developement to every character in this manga. Ren`s quote of wanting to cry when he is not even sad whenever he is with Ninako totally broke my heart. He is aware now how far his feelings for her have gone when he refused to wake her up when she slept leaning on his shoulder on the train. He pretended to be asleep.Thats so utterly romantic!

Ninako has so many choices available, but she only has eyes for Ren in THAT way. Why, Ninako, must it be Ren? Ando is constantly there for you, and shows that he cares for you. Really.
I can understand you not wanting to be with Daiki, since Daiki's sister is Ren's girlfriend, Mayuka. But, seriously, Ninako, girl, people are starting to think you have ISSUES. Please work this out.
---------------
There's far too much HIDING YOUR FEELINGS in this series. Why hide them when they are so obvious?!?
--------------
All the Ando-Ninako-Ren business aside, there was a lovely subplot in this volume about Daiki-x-Saiyuri. I love this couple. Daiki seems a little shy, but is always there to show his love for Saiyuri. Saiyuri is an outspoken lady that believes Daiki would have fallen for any lady that confessed to him. Together, they are sheer perfection. Where is Ninako? She needs to see what true love looks like!
Sadly, Daiki has decided to leave Saiyuri behind, and is trying to break up with her. Luckily, that ship gets turned back around...in the right direction, and he decides to stay with his mother, because Saiyuri means so much to him.
---------------
I read this volume as scanslations, so I very much appreciate all the work that the scanslators put into this.

Actually, I finished this one DAYS AGO, but . . . . . . I've been lazy. Laying around.
Having my own lovey dovey drama. And Skyrim. And . . . . sleeping.

BUT ANYWAY, HERE IT IS!

3 stars.
Strobe Edge. THE AMAZING THING. Got 3 stars.
BUT IT'S NOT BECAUSE THE BOOK WASN'T GOOD. It was because of my anger for these characters . . . . these . . . these freaking characters . . .
And I'm in a mad moody mood because this thing keeps popping up on my screen whenever I refresh the page and it has an ignore button and I freaking click on it EVERY TIME, AND IT JUST KEEPS COMING BACK!!!!! URRURURUGHSDFSDKJGFJLAIDFJALISDJFIWJIFDF (*grabs hair) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .(*breathes)

This volume did scare me, just a tiny little bit. IT WAS GOOD, DON'T GET ME WRONG. But it scared me. It did.

Why?

Mayuka . . . and Ren . . . . . . . (*sigh) Mayuka . . . . . . . and . . . . Ren----

Yeah, there're spoilers in this one.
WATCH OUT!

Ren IS attracted to Ninako, he is. And there's a lot of reasons why this is scary.

HE'S ALREADY DATING SOMEONE ELSE, but he got attracted to another girl.
Now I ask . . . HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!

Think about it like this:

Your favorite ice cream has been paused of continuation at your local drug store/grocery store/supermarket.
And you just stand there . . . staring at the fridge . . . thinking . . . "Wow, I can't buy my ice cream today."
So you get sad. But it's okay because you'll be able to eat it again when they continue it again. WHICH THEY WILL.

But . . . while you're missing your favorite ice cream flavor, you're still craving ice cream . . .
So you start getting attracted to other flavors. MAAAYBE you'd like to try them, right?

And you're then like Ren, thinking, "NO NO NO NO NO NO-OHH-OHHHH! I CAN'T BETRAY MY BELOVED ICE CREAM!"
Yet think about this:

IT'S THE ICE CREAM'S FAULT FOR PAUSING.

Same with Mayuka.
She's always busy with her freaking modeling job.
She finds it important. REALLY IMPORTANT. Why?
BECAUSE SHE THINKS THAT IF SHE'S A MODEL, IT'LL GIVE REN A REASON TO STAY WITH HER.
How . . . . . . how shallow . . .
I mean seriously. If I were her, I wouldn't want my love to only love me because of my JOB.

What on earth would happen if she just stopped being a model. ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN. Huh?! What would happen!
This fo-shizzler.
LOVE . . . LOVE is something that sticks with you NO MATTER WHAT. Doesn't matter if you're a super model or a garbage woman.
So fo-shizzle to this DUMMY.

See? Mayuka is the super muscly "good-looking" model.
And Ren is the other guy sitting there. CLUELESS.

description

And I'm just . . . . . . . killing her in my mind.
SERIOUSLY, I don't usually dislike manga characters. :{ Unless they're seriously messed up.

(Yeah. You guys can tell that I don't like Mayuka, right? NOT BECAUSE she is a challenger to Nina . . . but because she thinks this way. That is just . . . just NOT LOVE.)

BUT ANYWAY. Ren is attracted to Ninako now. AND THAT IS JUST . . . FREAKING MAYUKA'S FAULT.
Always being busy. Eff that job. I would go and be with the guy I love instead of trying to impress him with a JOB. I could impress him with a DATE. And spending time with him. And not letting him fall for another girl.

BUT that is just how the story goes. (*Sigh) Your loss, girlfriend.

Sorry, I'm making this review a rant on a relationship . . . (*bows) I just can't stand people being superficial in a relationship! It just . . . a real one doesn't work that way.

As for Ren, of course it's scary how he still got attracted to another girl even though he was dating someone. But still. That's what happens when you don't put in effort.
You don't have to be together all the time in PERSON. You can be miles apart, but still talk to each other over the phone or skype or whatever the world has for us these days.
BUT . . . BUT . . . . . . but . . . . . . .
She's . . . ALWAYS BUSY. She's choosing her job over him--

(*AHEM!) Before Theresa starts another rant, her inner self will now gently soothe her to prevent the neighborhood from exploding.

As for Daiki's part, that made me feel so . . . so . . . . . so mad.
Daiki was leaving with his dad because they were moving. So he looked at his girlfriend and told him, "I'm sorry. This is goodbye. Because I'm moving."

I see the good in this. He was thinking that she wanted to be happy. He was thinking that he didn't want her to be hurt or missing him all the time when she could be with someone that's always around.
But he was just so fast about it.

As for her, OF COURSE SHE GOT UPSET.
For me, I feel pained inside when someone tells me they broke up with their significant other because of LONG DISTANCE.
Dude. You know how many miles love can cover? HUH?!
So what the heck?! People say long distance never works out, BUT WHY DON'T YOU JUST GIVE IT A CHANCE?!
Why not just TRY IT. If it doesn't work out, then fine. If it does, GREAT. BUT JUST FREAKING TRY IT.
Don't give her or him up because of FREAKING MILES!! That's a stupid reason to give up someone you love!

Someone you truly, truly, truly love.

And you might think, "No . . . they're happier if I don't try to pull them in a long distance. Have them suffer."
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT?! If you love each other, be together! Because of course long distance isn't happy, but you will be together at one point! It just requires WAITING.
And wouldn't you wait forever for someone you truly, truly love?

But breaking up over distance . . . . . . letting it kill the love . . . . . . . . letting it break you apart--you know what?! DISTANCE IS A TEST. To see how strong the heart truly is for the other.
And you're just going to fail that test????

Come OOOOOONNNN, DAIKI!

Of course, he stays in the end. But still . . . . but still, but still, but still.

This was my ranting review.

So before, when I reviewed this, I honestly . . . HONESTLY . . . . . don't know how I totally missed explaining all this . . . . . . .

Also, I know I shouldn't review when I'm mad, but I just can't help it.

Yup.
TUMBLR. You know you wanna click this!

AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2011: My old review that you can skip over if you'd like because OBVIOUSLY my more current review is better! At least . . . . . . . more ranty . . . :}
RATED 5 STARS.

AMAZING. I finished the whole volume in one night.

Ahaaah! The new years is going to be in a few hours!!

So anyway, this book . . . is probably the best volume in the series that I've read so far.

Now the scary thing is that this week, one of my best friends is having issues with two guys. She's going out with one guy, but she wants to be with another.
Isn't this what Ren is dealing with? Sort of?

See, my friends have the strangest occurrences happening to them with guys.
1. I have a friend who is in love with a guy that she's never seen or met--she doesn't even know what he looks like!
2. There's the friend with the two guys...
3. My other best friend is surviving a love triangle with two guys in love with her.
4. And what am I surviving right now? I'm dealing with a guy and it has NOTHING to do with romance. In fact, I hate his guts. He needs to get eaten by an alligator. NOW.

But THAT'S NOT THE POINT!!! It's just that I think manga teaches important lessons for what really does happen in life!!

One of my best friends is going out with a guy who she thinks is sweet and kind, but she wants someone else.
That seems like what Ren is going through right now!

Except . . . Ren is trying to block out his thoughts of Ninako in THAT WAY so he can support Mayuka.

OH GOODNESS I CAN'T WAIT TO READ THE REST OF THIS SERIES!!! It's on to volume 5!!!!!

As for the fact that I usually record everything that happened into reviews, I just suggest that if you want to know what happens, you NEEEEEEEEED to read it yourself. This book was AMAZING.

This volume was a vast improvement over the last one. Both Ninako and Ren learn something about "mature" love and what it means to be selfish or out someone first. Surprisingly, Ando comes off the sager out of the three. The highlight of this volume was definitely Daiki and Sayuri's relationship. It was wonderful to watch these characters grow and learn a little bit about love and themselves in this volume. At this point in the manga, there is no simple divide anymore. Instead everything and everyone are mired shades of grey and that just speaks to the character development and plot. 4 stars

4 stars.

"Are you sure you're seeing him for who he really is?"

"What's with you? What part of Ren is childish?"

"I get it. It's not that you're not seeing it. It's that he's not showing it to you."

Bro, when I tell you my jaw dropped reading that! Io Sakisaka really popped off with the dialogue in that scene omg. I'm liking this series more and more. I really love the way Io Sakisaka shows the characters' emotions, especially certain emotions that are really complicated and hard to articulate. The scene of Mayuka turning to Ren after she found out her dad is getting remarried and you just see him realize in that moment that he has feelings for Ninako and simultaneously buried them deep inside because he feels like he needs to be there for Mayuka. To be steady and constant in a way that nothing else is in her life, even if that means shutting something inside himself down and pulling away from Ninako. Damn those panels were really good. I love how the way the characters emote. It's just so clear and you understand them even without the dialogue.

Also I HATE Ando. He genuinely pisses me off and I just can't stand him at this point. I feel like his first love was into Ren and that whole situation where he still went out with her while knowing that she was interested in Ren, only to realize that the girlfriend was never really interested in him, plays a part into why he is the way he is with Ninako. It feels like he is trying to prove to himself and Ren that the only reason he lost his first love was because he didn't put in the effort to fight for her. I think that plays a part as to why I really don't like him. Because it feels like he is using Ninako as a way to compete with Ren and by getting her to choose him, is like saying "See? I one-upped you." Maybe I'm reading too much into it but that's where I'm at. I really don't like him and how selfish he is.

It's interesting seeing Daiki getting a girlfriend, since I thought that he would be the many second lead of the series. I like seeing his relationship with Sayuri though. I'm grateful that even though the dad wanted to move, he still gave Daiki the choice to decide if he wanted to stay or go. I like that he didn't just drag him too, without considering Daiki's life and feelings.

Those last pages still really shook me. I'm not sure where volume 5 is gonna go. We can already tell that Mayuka knows there is a connection between Ren and Ninako and that she feels threatened by it. We also see the ways that Ren holds back from Mayuka, like with the sweets things, even though he does that so she won't feel guilty. Honestly, I just feel bad for everyone (minus Ando...). It feels like everyone is having their hearts broken in some way and I'm sad for them. Love is tough.

We pick up right where Volume 3 left off. Ninako tells Ando she is still in love with Ren, and could never use him to forget Ren. He tries to play it off like he’s cool with giving her time, but inside himself he’s a mess.

Daiki decides to get Sayuri an expensive necklace for Christmas at the encouragement of her friends.

Ren and Ninako end up on clean up duty (thanks to Manabu playing Cupid). At one point a soccer ball comes flying at them, and Ren shields Ninako to protect her but ends up “accidentally” kissing her on the forehead. Then they kind of gaze into each other's eyes for a while. He apologizes and Naniko takes it in stride, but when she walks away she finds herself crying, overcome by the emotion of it all. Then we see Ando had been watching, and his hatred for Ren building.

Later, Ren gets sick (and Ninako notices before anyone, even Ren). This means she has to work with Ando at the café. On their way home another coworker wants to borrow his scarf, but he turns her down, saying he’ll be cold, but when he realizes Naniko is cold he wraps it around her saying he is only nice to girls he likes. That his way of being nice is not being nice to everyone (this seems like a direct dig to Ren.)

Ren and Ninako take the train home together, and she falls asleep on his shoulder, he doesn’t want to wake her up so he misses his stop. When Ninako tries to walk him home, she slips and falls into his arms, and they share something that seems awfully close to a hug.

Daiki finds out his dad is going to get remarried, so he feels like he has to break up with Sayuri because he feels like he should be loyal to his dad and move with him. He later runs into Ninako, who sets him straight, and he decides will move in with his mom, so he and Sayuri can stay together.

Ando tries to make Ren feel like Ninako is over him, and tells him he is in love with her as well.
It’s Christmastime and the people without significant others are planning a party. Ren says he will be with Mayuki for Christmas. We also find out he’s quitting the café, and it seems to have to do with Mayuki and the fact he feels he as to be there for her now that her dad is going to be remarried.

Review for volumes 4-10
Very soap opera! Ninako loves Ren but he loves Mayuka, and Ando loves Ninako, but she won't date him because of Ren, etc. Reminds me of many other shojo manga. Loads of romantic tension, characters not communicating or telling one another important things, assuming they know what the other thinks - always incorrectly. Peach Girl, High School Debut, etc. The girl is always the same, too: tiny, cute, clumsy, sweet, nice, friendly and considerate to a fault. I've been thinking of manga in general lately, the art style always pays a lot of attention to character's hair and clothing details, which really stick out and make the world of the comic feel more real - not amorphous, unidentifiable, blobby clothes like you find in many western (especially indie) comics where everything is generic.

I liked Daiki's whole storyline! Especially the panels with his father--it was very heartwarming and loving. I definitely didn't anticipate how sweet that interaction was going to be. I actually like Daiki and Sayuri's relationship a lot. As for Ren, I get why he's pulling away--it's honestly realistically probably for the best. As per usual Ando was really annoying and coercive in this volume. I wish people would let go of unrequited and unreciprocated "loves" if the other person has shown themselves to be wholly and completely disinterested. In real life and in manga! Overall I enjoyed getting to know the side characters a little bit more. It really fleshes out the body of the story. I wish more mangakas took this into consideration when developing their characters. 3 I'm looking forward to the next volume though! Onwards!

Okay it's very interesting now because as the reader I'm starting to feel conflicted... I honestly don't know if I SHOULD ship Ninako and Ren? Like gaah this is actually strangely complicated and giving me dilemmas that are making me worried and confused and like I don't want people to get hurt and we've got some grey areas and conflicted feelings and GAAAH I'm scared that I'm not going to like where this story goes!! I guess we'll just have to read on and find out!

AAGH I DID NOT EXPECT THIS FROM SUCH A CUTESY SHOJO MANGA AGH

Gosh. I didn't see quite a few things coming!
I thought I did but I was wrong. It's interesting because Io Sakisaka does some things similar to her other works but at the same time it's different so at the end you cannot rely on those things.
Daiki is sooooo sweet!! Sayuri and him were a complete unexpected twist which I loved and got caught in.
I don't know what's going on. I really really, mostly unconsciously I think, have this preconceived ideas of how the characters will act because of Ao Haru Ride and then I get surprised and confused and startled. I love it because indeed I'm getting to know what happens as long as I'm reading, not before.

I know this is the whole point of this series, but these novels move SO slow,, like what?? Also for the pacing, I kind of wish Ninako got more character development. I mean, I guess I can root for her because she shows thoughtfulness and kindness, but I feel like the author should’ve made her more compelling if all these guys are going to fall for her. I mean, there’s nothing worse than a love triangle when they’re fighting over someone vanilla. I still found this book entertaining and live for the emotional overthinking trash🔆
