When an injury tears her ballet dreams away from her, Brooke becomes withdrawn and depressed. She spends a great deal of time alone as she attempts to recalculate her life plan. It isn't until her unlikely friendship with quirky Miss Cee Cee that Brooke begins to realize that beneath the surface of dreams lies adventure, mystery, romance and more than just a touch of danger.
There are two things that I have always known I wanted to be. One is an elementary school teacher. I had an amazing 2nd grade teacher, Mr. Geivet, who inspired me. I have been teaching elementary school for eleven years. The second thing is a writer. I have always written. I have always had stories swirling around in my head. I love reading young adult novels. Maybe I'm a bit immature (maybe?!), but many novels written for adults bore me to death. I enjoy books that have a touch of magic, time travel or some type of supernatural element, with vivid, lovable characters and unpredictable plots. These are the types of stories I write. I write what I love to read. I live in Southern Califoria with my three children, Christian, Berlyn and Donovan, a cat, Mazzy, and our two year old German Shepherd, Leonidas.
This was such a good read. It's a story filled with all sorts of friendship, romance and some fantasy aspect to it. I read through this book a lot faster then I thought I was going to, there was always something interesting happening in it. The author did a very good job, hope she writes some more books!
When fifteen-year-old Brooke moves to a new village next to the weird, old lady, Crazy Carter or Cee Cee, everyone's talking about, Brooke knows to keep her distance while being polite, trying to blend in with everyone else. But something's happening. The old spinster keeps popping up in Brooke's dreams as Brooke's life starts to spiral out of control. Suddenly, there isn't just the strange dreams that keep sending Brooke a certain message; there's also the school throb, Blaze, she's had a crush on ever since he once defended her from a bully. Even though she has no idea why, Brooke starts spending time with the old lady, and finds she isn't as crazy as everyone thinks. In fact, Cee Cee is quite clever and she has a big secret she soon shares with Brooke in order to teach her to become what she's supposed to be.
I thought Butterfly was a great read for teens, very well-written with a lovely heroine. Brooke has a strong voice and is very enticing, polite and loveable. I particularly liked the plot that focuses on magic and the paranormal with a great twist. The story drew me in from page one and was a page-turner. I really enjoyed the story and would recommend it to both teens and adults.
A Ballet dancer who believed her dreams were ruined forever finds out that in her dreams she finds herself dancing better than she ever did in real life. An assumed crazy lady living next door to her becomes her best friend and most important confidante, whom she learns a magical ability that she has had since she took her first breath after being born lays dormant in her mind and is brought to life. The child hood crush on a boy that she grew up with and lost for a brief time, that comes back into her life like a whirl wind and becomes her dream came true, are thrown together to fight the darkness that surronds those that they have become close to. Together they battle the Nightmares, Wierds, and ever present Evil to combat them and bring back those that have taught them their special dream magic.
Better than a Nightmare, this young adult book brings back the meaning to good dreams and the difference of a bad dream. Perhaps, this is how all dreams work as together a group of special seers help to maintain influence over peoples decisions as they sleep thru their dreams.
I really loved this book! I wasn't expecting much but Jodi Bullock is a wonderful writer and portrayed the thoughts and emotions of a fifteen year old girl perfectly!
It's a fairly short book that doesn't take long to read but the plot felt as though it flowed naturally. I really enjoyed this unique plot, and it's very different from most teen/YA books being published now. It moved along just fast enough and Brooke was an easy character to relate to and enjoy.
I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway by the author and I'm glad I did!
There were some technical errors, but they were minor. It's a light read, but it's worth it. It's a clean book, great for middle graders and teens, and those who enjoy clean YA books.
I really liked this book. It was the best book that I have read in quite some time. I loved the plot since it focused on dreams. In fact this was the first book I have read that was about dreams. It was really suspenseful towards the end of the book and I kept turning the page to figure out what happened. Miss Cee Cee was my favorite character since she was crazy and funny at the same time. I would love there to be a sequel and would definitely read it if there was one.
Butterfly is based on a 15 year old girl named Brooke. She was a ballet star, but when a tragedy occurred she became depressed and lonely. Until one of the weirdest neighbors, Miss CeeCee, becomes friends with her. That is where the story begins. Brooke has a deep crush on Blaze. Blaze is a kid at her school. They become good friends and find out that they are both seers, which means you can go into people’s dreams. Blaze and Brooke had to use clarity, which is a magical powder that they rubbed on their hands before they fell asleep. After rubbing clarity on their hands they had to think of a location they wanted to go to while they were dreaming. As the story goes on, Miss Cee Cee and Blaze’s trainer get stuck in the “bads”. The “bads” are dreams that are bad, violent and horrifying. The conflict in this story is that Blaze and Brooke have to get Miss CeeCee and Blaze’s trainer out of the “bads”. The two of them solved the conflict by going on an adventure through mazes and obsticals which finally leads them to Miss CeeCee and the trainer so they can get them out of the “bads”. This story is not believable because there is no such thing as seers or being able to go into people’s dreams. This story is somewhat entertaining but it does have some spots where it moves along slowly. It is also full of action at times. There are some situations in this book where I could relate to the characters. For example, when CeeCee got lost in the “bads” Brooke was worried. In this situation I could understand being worried about someone I cared for. The author did a good job developing these characters because there was quite a bit of good description about them. Jodi Bullock uses a straight forward approach to tell the story, often times explaining the characters actions. I would rate this author’s voice and style of writing as a three. In conclusion, this story did a good job holding my attention as the reader. However, I found a few parts of the story to be a bit confusing. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys fantasy type stories.
When Brooke's family moves next door to the crazy lady in town, she's at first a little wary. But soon a friendship strikes up between the two and Brooke learns the truth - she's a dream seer and now an apprentice to Miss Cee Cee. But when Miss Cee Cee and some of her colleagues are sucked into a bad place, can she and her seer friend Blaze save them all?
The first thing that struck my about this novel were the short sentences. As I read I felt this book might have been geared more towards the middle grade reader as opposed to the YA reader. The story also seemed to start out slow, but about halfway through I started getting hooked. The book redeemed itself by the end because of the imagery. The storyline might have been basic, but I thought the author did a fantastic job with the imagery in the dream sequence at the end of the book. I could actually picture the things she was describing and it looked just like a horror movie! I don't do horror movies and I'm seriously hoping I don't have nightmares tonight.
The book gets three stars because, while it was a great plot idea and the imagery was great, the story felt a little basic and the characters were a little flat. There were also some technical issues like misplaced quotations marks and I didn't care for the formatting, but I was thrilled to finally read a self-published book that wasn't riddled with spelling or grammatical errors. Ms. Bullock gets huge props for that. In the end, I enjoyed the story.
PS: I won this through the Goodreads First Reads program but the fact that I got this book for free did not affect my review.

I truly enjoyed Butterfly. It’s a well written story about dream makers. According to Cee Cee, there would be a lot less happiness in the world without the dream makers, also known as seers. Jodi ties in dreams and nightmares well into the story plot. I was fascinated by this world and how the seers are able to connect together, jumping in and out of dreams. Although the story is shorter than the average young adult books, the story flowed well. And the characters were easily likeable. This story is unique and I recommend this book to all readers!!!
