I have had this manga series on my to be read list for a while and was excited get it for Christmas. This was a wonderful start to this manga series. It is engaging, very creative, and a bit bizarre.

Ganta Igarashi is a middle school student who is wrongly accused of murdering his classmates (something that was actually caused by the appearance of a strange Red Man). As punishment he is sent to Deadman Wonderland. Deadman Wonderland is a prison complex that doubles as an amusement park for the general public. Basically in Deadman Wonderland the inmates participate in bizarre shows and contests to help fund the rebuilding of Tokyo after its destruction in a great earthquake.

This book is a bit science fiction and a bit horror with some dystopian elements. The whole book takes place ten years after the Great Tokyo Earthquake. Tokyo is struggling to rebuild and a big part of their financing comes from the Deadman Wonderland amusement park.

There are a lot of characters introduced but the main ones are Ganta and Shiro. Ganta is a very confused and horrified middle grade student who was witness to unspeakable horror and then accused of being the person who caused that horror. Shiro is a strangely happy and innocent girl with odd white hair that befriends Ganta inside of Deadman Wonderland. They are both incredibly interesting and mysterious characters that I am dying to know more about.

This book just introduces us to the series and, oh my, what an interesting set up it is. Deadman Wonderland is fascinating in its own right, the idea of inmates being slaughtered in contests for public entertainment is so very Roman. You find out that Deadman Wonderland has some other very dangerous secrets and then there is the who mysterious Red Man who causes mass slaughter. Add to that the mysterious way Ganta seems to be able to stay alive and you have an amazingly addictive story.

This is a pretty gruesome, gory, and creepy book, so I would recommend to older teen and adult only (I think it’s rated older teen).

Overall I absolutely loved this intro to this creepy sci-fi story with dystopian elements. It’s a fascinating set-up with some big mysteries and some engaging characters. It was an awesome read and I can’t wait to read the next one. I recommend to those who like horror/sci-fi manga.

I felt like I was missing some pages, the characters would be saying one thing amd before they could finish a thought we are moved to a different square moving on before I could understand what just happened. Loved the anime and wished to know how it continued on but I feel like the graphic novel is missing vital parts of the story in order to connect it all together as well as it feels like there are missing key points of what is going on leading up to a crucial part of the story.

I'm starting this series again, after nearly 10 years. Let's see how far I come this time. I forgot how bloody and graphic this was.

This was a completely random buy for me. I had a one week working experience in Graz (Austria), so when I finnished early on the last day, I took myselft shopping! And of course the first store that I went to was a book shop. I don't really speak or read german well enough to be able to successfully read an actual 300+ pages piece of work, but when I saw the manga section (I must explain that manga is not being translated into my native language, so I end up reading it in english anyways), I took myself up on a challenge and bought the single biggest manga they had to offer (in german of course)!
As you can see, I read the whole thing - in a matter of days if I say so myself (which quite surprised me) - but whether I liked it is anothe matter. It was definitely not bad, it was just not my cup of tea. The art is so beautiful and there are quite a few big full double-sided images and we've got some color going on, but that was just not enough for me. The description on the back was so intriguing, but the story turned out to be something completely else.
The biggest problem I had with this manga were the characters. I could not for the life of me get interested for any of them. Ganta is 14, allways mumbling the same things and trying to be a good person. Shiro has the body of a 16 year old but the mind of an 8 year old at most. Makina the guard woman (or whatever she is) is just the character with the boobs... There was no main character that stood out to me characteristically.
Although the story is based on mystery, there was nothing that would make me want to read the sequel. The lack of character depth and development honestly made this seem almost childish to me (despite the brutality with blood and guts everywhere). And don't get me wrong now - I love graphic novels and manga, but this just was not it for me. The art is really nice. Everything you would have expected from a standard manga, while still having its own twist on the style, but storywise was this nowhere near enough for me. Just having a good plot idea is not enough to develop an interesting story and this work is the proof of that to me.
I would believe you, if you told me, that this gets really interesting. It has huge potential for that! But if I don't care for any of the characters after the frist two volumes at all, than I think it's safe to say, that it's better for me to spend my money on something else.

Teenager Ganta Igarashi is accused of killing his classmates and ends up in a prison-slash-amusement-park. Just another day in MangaTown...
