Kitabın başlangıcı çok ilgi çekici. Lübnan’daki savaşı ve Beyrut’un yıkımını, savaşın travmalarını ve bu yıkımı aşabilmenin mücadelesini anlatıyor. Geçmişle günümüzü; kumaş ve ipliklerle iç içe geçirmesi, siyasi ve kültürel dalgalanmaları, gerçek ile hayalin karışımıyla takip etmesi çok güzel. Ancak bir noktadan sonra, kitap sanki zoraki bir uzatmaya uğramış, anlatımda kopukluk var gibi hissettiriyor.

Akdeniz Sürgünü, Lübnan İç Savaşı sırasında, babasından kalan kumaşçı dükkanına sığınan bir adamın yaşadıklarını ve hezeyanlarını anlatıyor. Önce, bombardımanlardan harap olmuş şehirde, evine ve dükkanına sahip çıkmaya ve hayatta kalmaya çalışan karakterle beraber iç savaşın yıkımına şahit oluyoruz. Ardından, giderek soyutlaşan, puslu bir anlatımla, yakılıp yıkılmış şehrin sokaklarında dolanıp, dükkandaki kumaş toplarının arasında adeta geçmişine yolcıluk eden karakterin içsel hesaplaşmalarını okuyoruz. Bunu da çok ustalıkla kotardığını düşünüyorum Barakat’ın. Aynı zamanda, ketenden dantele, kadifeden ipeğe, kumaşların tarihini aktarıyor yazar; dokumacılık tarihiyle romanın tarihi arka planı arasında paralellik kurarak ilerliyor. Bu sayede romanın ilk yarısı çok güzel ve ilgi çekici olmuş. Fakat ilerledikçe ipliklerin ve kumaşların hikayesini, evrenin düzeni, hayat döngüsü, iyi ve kötünün çatışması ve dengesi, ölüm-yaşam gece-gündüz döngüsü, siyaset ve yönetim, savaş ve barış, sosyal doku, değişen ve yitirilen değerler gibi pek çok konuya bağlıyor yazar; bu da metnin ilk yarısındaki etkileyiciliğini yitirmesine ve hatta dağılmasına sebep olmuş. Çok iyi başlayan bir hikayeyi gereksiz dallandırmalarla dağıtıp yazık etmiş. Bir ara hikayeye dahil olan Orta Doğu’ya has mitolojik anlatılar da keza bir koltuğa iki karpuz sığdırmaya çalışıyormuş hissini daha da pekiştirip, anlatıyı daha da dağıtmış. Kısacası, bana göre çok güzel başlayan ve bu şekilde devam etme potansiyeli de olan ancak yazarın mevzuları derinleştirme çabalarının metnin dağılmasıyla sonuçlandığı, yine de farklı kültür ve coğrafyalarla ilgili okumaları sevdiğim için okuduğuma memnun olduğum, ortalama bir roman.

لحد الأن أعتبرها من أسوء ما قرأت , رواية مملة جدا, لاتوجد لا حبكة و لا شيء , لا أعرف كيف أجهدت نفسي للصبر على قراءتها على امل اني سأعجب بفقرة ما أو أفهم القصة في صفحة من صفحاتها . خاب أملي و ضللت تائهة بين صفحتها بلا فائدة من دون أن أعجب ولو بعبارة واحدة

بدأت الكاتبة الرواية بداية طيبة لكنها بعد ذلك فقدت تركيزها ولا أدري يحاول القارئ متابعة القرأة فيضيع بين وصف أنواع الاقمشة ومتابعة الكلاب للاسف كانت رواية لاتستحق القرأة

A surreal novel for those who are familiar with the landscape of middle east. Flowing fabrics and weavers dominate this prose. There is no plot if you are looking for one. Initially the book will enchant you with beautiful descriptions but slowly the devastated landscape of Beirut will take you deeper into the rubble of war where a man in his futile ambition to grow a garden on the ruins of his cloth shop looks for new plants. Also, it unfolds the Kurdish mythology of how 'KURDS', came into being, which was interesting. I specifically didn't like the second half which was too surreal to interest me. Two and a half stars from me. :-)

لم استمتع بالكتاب.... هو يتحدث عن لبنان و وقع الحرب و الخراب فيها و كيف انها على مر العصور تدك و تعاود الوقوف حتى تصل لاعلى مراتب الازدهار و قممها ثم تدك المره تلو الاخرى كانما يستشعر نهايتها من قمم نجاحها....بطلها تائه فيها و في خرابها فيها الكثير من الفقد و التشويه و معايشه الخراب فيها الموت الكثير منه و فيها الجحيم لمن تعايش مع الحرب فبات يصحو معه و لا يخاف منه فلا تدري هل الحياه في الموت .لقد تحدثت عن تاريخ القماش بانواعه و كثير من الاسماء و الاماكن فاصبح كبحث علمى مترف مما افقدنى سيرى في مجمل الروايه و جعلها ممله بدون روح

رواية من الممكن أن اقول عنها انها "غريبة" ,
قرأتها ضمن منشورات كتاب في جريدة 2004,
يمضي فيها الخال موثقا الواقع بطريقة صادقة و عميقة جدادون ان تبدو كذلك,
و للقماش حكاية أخرى تغير نظرة القاريء له بعد أن ينتهي,
حيث يصبح القماش كائنا حيا حيويا و حساسا فيها.

رواية جميلة، يختلط فيها التاريخي بالإسطوري، تشبه كثيرا ما يكتبه أورهان باموق وأمين معلوف، العيب الوحيد فيها انها لم تفرد مساحة واسعة للحكاية أو القصة، كانت ستكون اجمل لو غطت حياة البطل بكل تفاصيلها من الساعة التى اكتشف فيها كيف جاء والداه الى بيروت الى الحد الذي انتهت إليه القصة..

حسنًا على هدى بركات أن تفهم معنى الابداع قبل شروعها بكتابة رواية جديدة في المستقبل.
في هذه الرواية الواقعة في 160 صفحة. شرّقتني وغرّبتني بين المماليك والحروب الصليبيّة والنزاعات الآشوريّة والعثمانيّة، أعادتني إلى بيروت وباب إدريس وسوق الطويلة والداون تاون وكنائس وجوامع لبنان، لم يفلت منها محلّ إلّا وذكرته، العنتبلي، محلّات العصائر والمعجّنات والبيض والمشروب. ألقت بي إلى المشاتل ورصّت لي جميع أنواع الأعشاب والخضر في عالم النبات. حلّلت تاريخ القماش وأنواعه من الكتّان والموسلين والدانتيل. هذا أسوأ عمل أقرأه في حياتي إن دلّ على شيء، دلّ على ضعف هدى بركات وعدم قدرتها على كتابة رواية. تشعر وأنت تقرأ لها انّها فعلًا غير سويّة وأفكارها مشتّتة. كأنّها تفتح صفحة الوورد مع صفحة ويكيبيديا وتباشر الكوبي والبيست! لا روح فيها ولا إبداع ولا شيء.

Couldn't get into it. The narrator was not likeable, and the whole thing moves too slowly. I didn't care for the tone of the books the story within the story took too long to get to. I'm reading the English translation. Maybe it's better in Arabic.

hoda barakat reveals a invesitgation of where our minds would go were we to be left alone. thankfully her protaganist wasn't a politican.

this book took me some time to become invested in. its brevity hasn't been an incentive to finish it quickly but there are precious nuggets of wisdom within the book. it does the reader the favor of mentioning the breadth of destruction in beruit and insinuations of israeli militancy. this nuance is important for two reasons: the relief to read a commentary on war in the middle east without a lengthy defense/degredation of the state of israel and a rare, readable, opportunity to be guided through the a skill in material aesthetics.

i recommend it to those interested in the middle east and tired of pedagogical pathways to seeing the 'true' picture.

عندما يكون القُماش هو البطل ..

علّقتني هذه الرّواية منذ عام ٢٠٠٤ عندما قرأت عنها. ووجدتها الكترونياً في مجموعة كتاب في جريدة.

حكاية القماش وحبكته وأصوله، من الدانتيل الى الحرير ، صاغتها هدى بركات بخط متوازي مع بيروت(المدينة الملعونة) وتاريخها وحروبها .
حكاية فريدة فلسفية فيها من بدء الخليقة والأكوان والغواية إلى الأديان والفلسفات والعقائد مروراً بالأعراق والأنساب والأقوام، بشكل أراه فريداً متفرّداً.

تحكي البطل ، بائع القماش الذي أحب خادمته الكرديّة، حين تاهَ في دمار بيروت حين الحرب الأهلية، ليلجأ لدكانه، ويعيش برفقة (ثلج) في القسم السفلي المتبقي من الدكان والذي يوجد به نفائس الأقمشة.

تُطل حكايا الأب لإبنه عن القماش وعن جده بأسلوب ساحر جداً، جعلني أركز على كل معنى فيه.

تستحق ٥ نجوم من وجهة نظري.

A very interesting book about a war in Lebanon and a person stuck in the middle of it. But the book is also about material, and weaving, and cloth and there is a beautiful; section near the end about silk. Here is a small example of the beautiful use of language – this section is about silk: “Come a little nearer, and close your eyes so that their energy will pass into your ears. What do you hear? the sound of a pent-up brook suddenly freed, or a wave crashing onto hot sand, or the escape of a breath that trembles with desire, or the gurgle of milk in the breast before it streams into the infant’s mouth, or the tremble of cold mercury across polished glass, or the whoosh of primal blood in the womb’s lining …”

رواية مختلفة، سرد ممتع و لغة قوية، في البداية تكون شيقة، جذابة ... أحببت ربط الحكيّ حول النسيج، الخيوط و القماش مع الأحداث و التقلبات السياسية حول العالم قديماً، التقاء حكايات البطل مع حبيبته شمسة و تبادل الحكيّ بينهما كلً عن جدوده و تاريخه، يتوازى ذلك مع حياة البطل في الجزء المدمر من بيروت بعد الحرب, و فكرة طبقات الحياة في بيروت التي ما تكاد تجدد حياتها و تزدهر حتي تنهار و يدفن جيل آخر.
يعيب السرد بعد نصف الرواية شيء من التطويل كان باعث علي الملل إلي حد ما.

Lu en traduction française pour une dissertation sur les romancières arabes. Sur fond de guerre civile à Beyrouth, ce livre défend l'importance de la mémoire, de l'histoire et du tissu social, chaque communauté libanaise contribuant au fil et à la trame de ce tissu.
On peut parler ici de réalisme magique.

ولم يكن حكي ربيع مملة
قرأت للكاتبة رسائل الليل كان سردها ممتع وكانت قصة مختلفة
حارث المياه سرد ممل ولم استوعب كم الكلام الكثير عن القماش ولا فكرة ان تفتن النساء بالحرير لدرجة العشق

‘Unutmamak’ ve ‘Unutturmamak’ amacıyla yazılmış, iyi ki de yazılmış Lübnan üzerine bir ağıt. Ağıt kelimesini okurken içimi acıtan çok katmanlı bir hikaye olduğu için kullandım: Bir yandan Beyrut’un savaş kokan sokaklarında diğer yandan da kumaşlara dair hikayelerde yapılan bir yolcukluk.

O arador das aguas
Quando fechei a ultima pagina do livro fiquei com uma sensacao esquisita. A principio nao gostei. Depois refleti melhor sobre os significados do livro sem enredo, com um personagem solitario que vaga entre escombros de uma guerra e suas memorias afetivas.
Os pensamentos do narrador se encaminham para um mundo de delirio surrealista, ate que descobrimos ao final que ele esta morto. Estaria ele morto ja desde antes? Ou morreu apos vagar pela cidade devastada tentando sobreviver no subsolo da loja de tecidos do pai?
Pouco importa. A marca maior da historia é a solidao profunda imposta pela perda de todos. Sem os outros, nao ha nada. Nao se pode confirmar se estamos sonhando ou acordados. Se nossas memorias sao compartilhadas ou inventadas. Na solidao, so ha ausencia. As cadeiras para assistir ao espetaculo das aguas estao vazias.

Mais uma edição excelente da Editora Tabla.
2 anos após a explosão do porto de Beirute e uma literatura forte como esta fez deste livro uma das melhores leituras desse ano, para mim.

O livro acompanha um moço, filho de um vendedor de tecidos, em Beirute nas ruínas da Guerra Civil. Oscilando entre a realidade e delírio, presente e passado, o narrador vai navegando por esses destroços enquanto pensa na mulher que amou e na família.

Não é só uma bela e triste poesia sobre a vida na destruição, é também um livro que brinca com a História. O personagem conta séculos de história na perspectiva da tecelagem e torna o próprio livro um tear criado entre passado (história do mundo) e presente (Beirute em ruínas).

"[...] tecido não é cerâmica nem osso, não é metal nem pedra, é apenas um pouco de carbono e pó. [...] sua trama se desfaz com leveza igual à vida de cidades como esta, [...]"
