“Revenge, determination and love fuel this thoroughly enjoyable fast paced thriller.” – Samuel’s Book Reviews.

“You will be hooked! Not since Sidney Sheldon has a male author captured a woman’s perspective so well. it has it all — intrigue, love and realism.” – Kathleen Bursaw “bookster”

“Good book for those who like a little mystery, a little intrigue, a little romance and an average person as a heroine. I couldn’t put this book down. The tone was light and easy going, story well written and easy to follow. Counterfeiting details seem to be well researched, without being boring and technical.” – Christine, at Goodreads

“A fun filled rollercoaster Love, revenge, danger, and pride propel the reader through this excellent novel. The protagonist, Elaine, grows throughout this entire story and at each stage the reader can relate to what she experiences. Fantastic read!” – Theresa Fitzgerald, Book Reviewer

You know when you watch those TV dramas, the ones that are on three or four nights in a week, or maybe once a week for a month, and you really get into it, and when it finishes you look at your spouse and say, “Eh? What happened there? Did he die? Did they get the money? Did he marry her? I bloody hate these TV dramas that don’t end properly!” You know those shows, right? Well ‘Lust, Money and Murder’ is like that. It just stops half way through the story. Just like that. Right in the middle of the action, it just stops….

The author’s let himself down badly with this one. It actually deserves much more than a 3 Star because it’s an intriguing storyline with a number of sub-plots, likeable characters and edge-of-your-seat danger. But it’s not a trilogy.

Truth to tell, I’m not even sure Mike Wells claims that it is a trilogy, which by the way dictionary.com describes as “a series or group of three plays, novels, operas, etc., that, although INDIVIDUALLY COMPLETE, are closely related in theme, sequence, or the like.” In ancient Greece a trilogy was “a series of three COMPLETE and usually related tragedies.” And there’s the rub, for when you pick up a book you expect it to be complete of itself.

The marvellous Genghis Khan series by Tim Ellis can be read as individual complete books, as can the fantastic ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy by Philip Pullman (Harry Potter for grown ups). However ‘Lust, Money and Murder parts 1, 2 & 3’ are just one book (for the price of three).

I was really enjoying the book when it suddenly came to a grinding halt without even bothering to work its way down through the gears. No doubt Mike expects the reader to immediately download volume 2, but not me. I’ve got 100 books on my Kindle waiting to be read, and I won’t read another Wells’ book out of principal because I think this finished with a cheap shot.

Note: I wanted to purchase the third book, but I accidentally purchased the first trilogy of the series instead. However, I don't regret it, because it is worth every penny.

As a child, Elaine Brogan had a special bond with her father and she was detail-oriented, a gift that will help her later in life. When Elaine was sixteen, she became a model, but, after spending a huge amount of money for her humble condition, she realised that everything the agency promised her was just a scam. The sum of money she received back was actually counterfeit. Unfortunately, her father paid for his daughter’s naivety. He was wrongly accused of “a Class C felony, punishable by up to 12 years in prison” and he was also accused of theft because “her father had been robbing construction sites to put her through Bromley” – a better school for Elaine. Patrick’s sacrifice for his daughter’s future and the fact that he didn’t want to drag her with him into jail really made me cry and think of my dad, who would have probably done the same for me.

Elaine’s life drastically changes after her father commits suicide in prison. She seeks revenge against Ronald Eskew, the man who gave her the counterfeit money, and joins the Secret Service. Elaine goes through many tough tests which make her a cold, calculated, independent woman, aware that her beauty that can be used as a tool. Isn’t she fit to become a secret agent? She is harshly trained to react fast to unexpected situations such as terrorist attacks and threats against the President of the USA.

Overall, this book was interesting and different from what I usually read. I can’t say I was totally into it, I enjoyed the prologue and Elaine’s story until her father’s death. The college period and the training part made me lose interest a bit, until the secret agent was sent to Bulgaria, where her missions caught my attention again. However, the jaw-dropping twists towards the end tempt me to buy the whole series. I bet there are many people like me, who would like to learn more about Elaine’s journey. Until the next review, find a little time to read a great book, old or new.

I received the first book "Lust" free from Mike Wells himself, who then informed me that books 1 to 3 were available to download for free from Amazon for a limited time.  I downloaded all three straight away and started reading them as soon as they appeared on the screen of my Kindle. Once I started reading them I got so lost in them that I read  late into the night without realising that I had been reading for longer than I had intended. I found the books to be real page turners.

The books were well written and easy to read with many twists and turns, exactly what I like when reading.

The First book "Lust" Sets the scene for the story and introduces the characters  which develop into strong characters as the books go on.

I liked most of the characters but my favourite character was Elaine. An young innocent girl who has her life changed forever by a scam that she fell for as a teenager, resulting in her father going to jail and ending his life. These events in her early years leads her to make a decision to find the man responsible and to make him pay for what he did to her and her father.

Note there are more books in the series so be aware that you may not get all the answers that you want when you have finished but overall a great read, so give them a try. I'm sure you'll enjoy them as much as I did.

Book One was just the tip of the iceberg. As the plot thickened, its greatness multiplied.

The new characters introduced an immersive sense of terror and power that was almost intoxicating.

Basic Details:
Book Title: Lust, Money & Murder
Subtitle: #1-3 Omnibus
Author: Mike Wells
Genre: Mystery/Spy
Part of a series? Yes
Order in series: 1-3
Best read after earlier books in series? No

Overall score:
I scored this book 4/5
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
(Close to five out of five. Marked down for the rather slow start in grabbing my attention)
Short Summary of the book:
This book tells the story of Elaine Brogan, a young woman who suffers under the knowledge her father was sent to prison for passing counterfeit money. This influences her further life and she fights to right the wrongs done.
What I liked about the book:
I particularly liked the strong main character but hated how she was deceived and made to lose the love of her life.
What I didn’t like about the book:
I wasn’t impressed by the start of the book. The first chapter was rather slow starting and did not really grab my attention. Although I was initially tempted to put down the book as a lost cause, the pace soon picked up and it became difficult to put the book down (or to not buy the next books in the series. Still resisting but it is becoming more difficult every day).
My favourite bits in the book:
I loved where Elaine managed to prevail in her training and appears to be the winner in the end, but is she?
My least favourite bits in the book:
I didn’t like it when the book was finished. The story after book three is obviously not finished yet and I want to know what happens next.
Any further books in the series? Any more planned by this author?
I understand the author continues to write new books, possibly even more in this series.
What books could this be compared to and why?

This book reminded me slightly of the Spy series by Diane Henders in that both authors have a female spy as the main character. The books and style of writing are completely different, though.
Recommendation:
In summary, I would recommend this book for the following readers:

Children No
Young Adult Maybe
Adult Yes

If you like spy novels, mystery and suspense, this book could be the book for you.

I look forward to reading more books by this author. The only reason I have not yet bought the next ones in the series is a promise to myself to first finish the books I have waiting to be read already.

This review says I took weeks and weeks to read the trilogy and the fourth novel, in the Lust, Money, Murder series, which I didn’t. I gulped them all down in about a week, but haven’t had time to post a review until now. It’s an excellent series, though I’m sorry to say that I liked the anti-hero even better than the heroine. I loved the attention to the details of the designer clothing, which read like fashion porn, and the characterisation is great. The plot is creative and fascinating, and I highly recommend the series.

5★ Audiobook⎮ I literally just finished this audiobook less than 10 seconds ago and I’m still heavily breathing from having held my breath during the ending. Wow! This was such a rush. I’m left with a strong urge to go door-to-door proselytizing about Lust, Money & Murder. This audiobook has an addictive quality I’ve only experienced from television shows. You know how certain shows are considered “binge-worthy”? The ones that make you stay up until all hours of the night, compulsively clicking for the next episode. Mike Wells has managed to package all of that into an audiobook series.

Lust, Money & Murder are actually three separate installments (titled “Lust”, “Money” and “Murder”), but I recommend either listening or reading to them in combined form, as I did. If not, the monstrous cliffhangers are bound to drive you crazy.

Wells takes you on a journey with Elaine (the protagonist) that spans the globe, but does so in a way that feels smooth and continuous. There are certain themes in Elaine’s life, and thus in the story, that tie everything together throughout and especially in the end.

I never knew where the story was headed, not even once. I’m usually happy if a story can manage to surprise me once. Being surprised by one good plot twist is just about all I could ask for, considering how much I’ve read. Two well-executed plot twists all but guarantee a five-star review.

I’m sitting here trying to think back and count the times I audibly gasped, jumped forward in my seat, or shot my eyes open in surprise. Not to mention the very huge twist near the end that caused me to shout so loud that my cat has yet to emerge from under the bed. Considering all of that, I feel it’s only fair that Lust, Money & Murder should be awarded at least 10 stars (out of five).

What is most impressive about this story is the fact that it managed to combine well-balanced characters with a well-paced plot. The writing wasn’t flourishy and overly descriptive. It fit the speed and style of the story perfectly. Who wants long, unnecessary descriptions slowing the momentum of an action-thriller story? There were flashbacks and a few POV changes to vary the pace from time to time, but those tactics were used sparingly and with tactfully.

I need to start a petition to have Lust, Money & Murder made into a prime time TV drama. It would make the transition from page to screen extremely easily. I recommend this to anyone who likes shows such as Quantico, Castle (without the humor), Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and Rookie Blue. Hey ABC, take a hint and option this for television already!

Narration review: As much as I adored the story, this is the type of review that tests my metal as an unbiased reviewer. The story gets a very solid 5 stars, but if I were rating the audiobook separately, it would get 3 or 3.5.

Let me be clear: Sue Sharp did a fine job of narrating the story. Her accents enriched the characters and her voice was lovely. I was even impressed with her tonal range. My complaints have very little to do with her and more to do with the sound quality and production of the audiobook itself.

There were several slip ups in the recording. So many, that I could not neglect mentioning them in this review. Phrases were repeated, there was audible dubbing, and sometimes the sound came and went. I understand that the author produced this audiobook (which I respect) and that instances like this are bound to happen, even sometimes in professional studios.

The good news is that my overall opinion of the audiobook was not affected by these errors, but only because the story and Sharp’s narration were so excellent. If that hadn’t been the case, this would likely be a very different review.

I’m not saying this to discourage you from choosing the audio version of the story, because I believe it is still worth hearing, but to simply fulfill my duty as a forthright reviewer. ♣︎

➜ This audiobook was graciously gifted to me by its author, Mike Wells, in exchange for a review containing my honest thoughts and opinions. Thanks, Mike!

Lust, Money & Murder (Lust, Money & Murder, #1-3) by Mike Wells

If you've ever wondered whether or not to start a series or would/could finish a trilogy before reading one chapter or page, LUST, MONEY & MURDER is your gig. Although named Book 1, Book 2, and Book 3, this Triptych of Sin by Mike Wells should be regarded as one book, irrespective of the apportioned title, sequence of release, or serialization. It's basically one book, and fret not, it's a fast read. Those who've found themselves at the receiving end of a very late night surprise flick on Cinemax or Showtime (yes, this world used to exist before the dawn of Netflix, streaming, and endless choice on Prime) will appreciate the simplicity of this novel's approach. It'll be the kind of entertainment where ya have to overlook Jefferson on a $100 bill or an Ethiopian cafe in Sofia, Bulgaria that serves muffins.

LUST, MONEY & MURDER is the story of the neurotic journey of a young woman from Montana to Minsk; on the way she becomes a member of the US Secret Service, assigned to combat those around the globe that manufacture and trade in counterfeit $100 bills. Naturally, a shocking murder is the preamble and it gives a good taste of where the story is headed further down the road or cliff. Immediately, however, it delves into the teenage years of Elaine Brogan, aspiring super model and Irish princess in her daddy's mind. Of course, that is not how things turn out and Elaine is soon motivated to becoming a pawn in the Treasury Department's struggle to uphold the integrity of US currency's value.

The book, and this is meant cumulatively, gets interesting when Elaine gets reassigned from Great Falls, MT to Bulgaria. Mike Wells is able to squeeze info nuggets of the printing process and the security features of US currency into this yarn and in the process, teach you what a Turkey Roll is (probably made up), and no, it's not a sandwich. As the vast majority of US $100 bills find use outside America, it is logical that the story finds Elaine all over Europe - from Bulgaria, to Russia, Germany, and Italy. The bad guys are superbad, the women exotic and haughty, and the agents far from home don't follow the rules but play it by the book. Elaine soon finds herself at the crux of crosses, double-crosses, betrayals, deceptions and manages to always land on her feet without spending any of her nine lives. So much so that her choices soon ship her back into the heart of the Treasury Department in DC, assigned to a new task force & then towards Italy, deep deep deep under cover.

LUST, MONEY & MURDER does a good job with keeping you entertained and the action is believable, fast, and never over the top. Elaine Brogan falls in love quickly, cares deeply, can't shoot well enough for Presidential Protection Services, but thinks on her feet. Styled like a modern tale of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (pick any of the later Tom Cruise vehicles), Elaine wants to believe in the Irish Princess with a castle and a moat and by the end you'll do the same. When it comes to an avalanche of counterfeit money, can Elaine resist the temptation, will good triumph over evil, and can caution and duty trump greed? Head into Book 1 and see if you can actually stop before Book 3 to find out.

Sorry, @MikeWellsAuthor. I wanted to like them.

This set was a free download for me and also included half of book 4. First things first, I would never have paid for each of these books individually, and I probably wouldn’t have paid for them at all even if Books 1-3 were all one book at 275 pages. I have found that my benchmark for most downloads is 300 pages (yes, even if they’re free), and I despise the cliffhangers. If you want my interest and a decent review, give me a stand-alone novel with some depth to it. If I know the author or ALL of the reviews are stellar, I’ll come down to about 275, but most books that are shorter than that don’t have enough character development to keep my interest.

Now I’ll get to the actual review. I struggled with these books. There were a lot of good reviews, but I did not read what they read apparently. It could have been a good story line if the heroine were believable. For me, she just wasn’t. Not giving away anything that’s not in the Amazon description or in the first few chapters, Elaine Brogan is the extremely detail-oriented daughter of a construction manager who would do anything for his little girl. He steals supplies from his construction sites to put her into private school and to give her $2000 for classes she wants to take through a modeling agency. When the agency turns out to be a scam and she demands the money back, the owner gives her counterfeit money that her father deposits. When he’s arrested for passing the counterfeits, since he won’t reveal where the money came from, his fingerprints also implicate him in the construction site thefts, and he goes to jail, where he commits suicide.

This is where I start to find it hard to suspend my disbelief. ***WARNING: SPOILERS***
First, I don’t understand why Elaine and her father won’t reveal where the counterfeits came from. That incident set the whole story in motion, so I get that it was necessary for the book to continue, but I don’t understand why anyone would take the fall for that. I also find it hard to believe that the private school Elaine is attending agrees to keep her in school as a minor and an orphan. Family Services would almost certainly get involved in a case like this, and Elaine would end up in some sort of foster care. Finally, the headmaster of the school somehow arranges for a full scholarship (room and board) for Elaine for the rest of her education. Scholarships don’t just come out of thin air.

So Elaine finishes high school and is determined to get revenge on the modeling agency, so she sets herself on a path to become a U.S. Secret Service agent to work in Anti-Counterfeiting. Everything she studies, every decision she makes, is based on this career choice. She attends RISD and determines what she needs to study to qualify for a career in Anti-Counterfeiting. When she gets an interview with the Secret Service, she somehow manages to pass through extensive interviewing, psychological screening, and a lie detector test without revealing anything that would tip them off to the idea that maybe, just maybe, her intentions are not all she makes them seem to be. (Side note: in one of her training classes for the Secret Service, she encounters Gene Lassiter, an instructor who tells her that when she’s ready to quit the Secret Service and come work for the Treasury Department to give him a call. This was a one-time encounter at this point that is key to the rest of the book, and to more disbelief on my part.)

She gets the job she wants in a remote office of the Secret Service, and she asks if she can work on her own cases on her own time, so she starts looking for the head of the modeling agency. Over the course of six months, her boss makes passes at her, and she won’t give in to him. She does not file a sexual harassment complaint because she feels it would be his word against hers, and her boss eventually has her transferred to Bulgaria and says it’s because she was using the office resources for her personal research. She doesn’t fight it. She just goes. This “determined” woman who has spent her entire life preparing to get revenge on the man who landed her father in prison just rolls over and goes to Bulgaria?

Once she’s in Bulgaria, her new boss, Nick LaGrange, is much more laid back than her old boss. She works side by side with him for six months, and gradually falls in love with him. But she’s gun-shy because he doesn’t seem interested and she still has bad memories of her old boss. Just as they get to a point where they share their feelings and then sleep together (like, literally the next morning), she gets a call from Gene Lassiter asking him to meet her in Germany and not to tell anyone who she’s meeting or why she’s going because Nick is about to be arrested. So this man who taught her in a single class, who she met once and has no other known relationship with, calls her out of the blue and tells her to figure out a way to get to Germany without revealing anything. And she goes! And she believes him, tells Nick she has been reassigned to Treasury (although the Treasury is a completely different department, so she would quit the Secret Service and be hired by the Treasury), at the last minute decides to tell him that he’s going to be arrested, and then she goes to DC.

Lassiter works her day and night to create a list of software updates that need to be made to the machines that check bills for counterfeits. (He hand-picked her because of her eye for detail. While in Bulgaria, she became known as the Secret Service agent who could identify counterfeits quicker than a machine.) He checks her into a long-term stay hotel under a different name, gives her a burner cell phone, and doesn’t allow her to do anything outside of work and the hotel for months. She has never gone through any sort of onboarding or orientation that we’re aware of. She completely trusts this man. She never questions it. How on earth does she not question it?!?!

Long story short (too long already, I know), Elaine goes to test the software updates in Russia, but Lassiter has set her up with the Russians. He is working with the enemy in return for 800 million Euros so that he can live out the rest of his life with his gay lover. Elaine gets “rescued” by an Italian counterfeiter, Giorgio Cattoretti, who creates copies of designer gowns, bags, and shoes in addition to currency, because he believes that she was there to deliver the software updates because he has a stolen currency press. She ends up becoming enamored with Giorgio and agrees to stay on as his partner. (WHAT?!) And then just as quickly, she decides that he is the type of person she took this job to stop and decides that she’s going to betray him. (WHAT?!?!) She is unable to leave because her fake passport is delayed, and while they’re in Giorgio’s castle, Nick (who, as we suspected, was NOT arrested) just happens to have gotten a lead that Giorgio might be the counterfeiter who has the stolen machine and sneaks onto the property. Nick sneaks into Elaine’s room, Elaine tells Nick she has always been in love with him, Giorgio comes in and shoots Nick, and then takes Elaine away to protect her. While they’re gone, he finds out that she betrayed him and takes her out to the cliffs to toss her to her death, but she had grabbed a letter opener and stabs Giorgio in the eye, and he goes over the cliffs instead. Elaine does lose her footing and she’s hanging from the ledge, but Nick (yes, dead Nick, who was wearing Kevlar so not dead and was released by Giorgio’s cook who decided Giorgio had killed too many people) comes to her rescue. The epilogue is that they move to France, where they live with their two children and their cook Tony. (Seriously?) All of Giorgio’s staff were arrested, his counterfeiting equipment destroyed, and his body never recovered.

And you guessed it, Book 4 is Giorgio’s return…because he apparently survived the fall and was able to nurse himself back to health and then recover his fake passports so he could disappear and start over.

I know there were a lot of people who loved this set, based on the reviews, but I was not one of them.

I downloaded the first of this trilogy, Lust, on Amazon. When I got to the end, I felt immediately compelled to get the other two books so I could see what happened next. So I snatched up the trilogy on Smashwords (learning how to purchase via PayPal in the process). I was not disappointed in the least.

Growing up, Elaine Brogan's father tried to protect her from reality. But reality found a way to ruin her family and toss her into the fray. Her intelligence and beauty get her only so far.

In some ways the character, Elaine, is portrayed as naive and a bit slow on the uptake. Maybe deep down she knew but didn't want to believe what was happening to her. Either way the vulnerability plays a vital role in moving the story forward. Overall I loved the trilogy.

I don't really read books like this but it was very captivating. I am only sorry it took so long to finish but that is no reflection of the writer. I found it to be interestingly suspenseful. It seemed well researched and well written. I would highly recommend this book.

Author Mike Wells weaves an interesting tale of mystery and suspense, with intriguing twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning. The characters are finely drawn with a narrative that captivates and surprises. For me, the writing style was both poetic and nostalgic making for a story as dark and brooding as its many settings. The author paints a dark and mysterious thriller in a very vivid and convincing way. It’s a fast-paced story that will keep you engaged from the first page to the last.

The book description gives a sneak preview: ‘Born in the worst suburb in Pittsburgh, Elaine Brogan is bright, beautiful and bold. When her father is falsely arrested for passing counterfeit $100 bills, Elaine vows to become a Secret Service agent and track down the man responsible. After barely surviving the arduous Secret Service Training Academy in Laurel, Maryland, she is transferred to bleak and blustery Great Falls, Montana. But things do not go as planned, and Elaine soon finds herself betrayed and thrown into an adventure that takes her halfway around the world, from dark and mysterious Sofia, Bulgaria, to Moscow Russia, and finally, to Milan, Italy. In the end, will Elaine find the love and happiness she truly seeks…or will she turn to a life of obscene wealth, power and corruption?’

Now, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself! However, I will say it was well worth the read. It’s my second time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed yet again.

Lust, Money & Murder (Books 1, 2 & 3) had every element a good story should have. An intriguing plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There is plenty intrigue in this page turner that will take the reader on a spellbinding journey.

I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book's mystique. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the novels in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. It’s a first-class mystery, thriller and suspense with perfect pacing. Not much is as it appears here, which is just the way fans of mystery, thriller and suspense will want it!

I’ll definitely be looking forward to reading more from Mike Wells in the future. I would definitely recommend these books. Five stars from me.

Lust, Money & Murder books 1-3 make up the first trilogy in the 10-book series written by author, Mike Wells.  According to his official website, Wells is a “bestselling author of more than 20 “unputdownable” thriller and suspense novels.”  Unputdownable is the only way to describe these books!

Disclaimer: I received these books free from the author in exchange for an honest review. Even though these books were given to me, I did not and will not receive any compensation for this review.  The opinions stated are 100% my own and are in no way influenced.

Book 1 After her father is falsely accused of passing counterfeit money, Elaine Brogan pursues a career in the Secret Service vowing to avenge her father and bring justice to the man responsible.  After completing a grueling academy, Elaine finds herself stationed in Great Falls, Montana.  Betrayed by a man she thought she could trust, Elaine is then thrust halfway around the world on a whirlwind adventure through Bulgaria, Moscow, and Milan.  Sparks fly when she meets her new partner, Nick LaGrange, but as history has proven, can she really afford to get too close?

Book 2 Elaine soon discovers, once again, things…and people…are not always what they appear.  She accepts a position with the US Treasury identifying imperfections in the near-flawless counterfeit bills being printed on the missing KBA Giori machine.  When her boss falls ill, Elaine offers to take his place in traveling to Moscow to present the newest counterfeit detection software.  After being detained by Secret Service agents, she is forced to take matters into her own hands in order to escape with her life.

Book 3 Elaine, now a captive of counterfeiting mastermind Giorgio Cattoretti, is tempted into an extravagant life in exchange for her expertise in counterfeit detection.  Second-guessing every decision she has made up until this point, especially in regards to the men she has trusted, she begins to question her own motives.  Will she give in to temptation and embrace a life of crime and luxury?

Mike Wells is an excellent writer and these books are wonderfully written.  The story is fast-paced and each book is better than the last.  I was completely captivated and became so invested in the story that I literally shouted, “No!” in disbelief a few times, scaring my poor dog who was sleeping at my feet.

I would highly recommend this trilogy to anyone who enjoys thriller and suspense books.  Just be sure that you have all three of these books ready to go before you start, because you will not want to stop for anything.  Unputdownable is an understatement!

I have recently discovered the world of Indie publishing and the book series "Lust, Money and Murder" by Mike Wells were a wonderful surprise, proving to be a real page-turner!

The eternal fight of good against evil is the main topic of the series. It is present not only as an underlying theme in the narrative but also as a constant internal battle of the main character Elaine Brogan and the supporting characters.

Born in a poor Pittsburgh suburb, Elaine Brogan is intelligent, courageous and a beauty. In her adolescent years her father is unfairly accused and arrested for passing counterfeit dollar bills and she makes a vow to become a Secret Service agent in order to find the criminal she holds responsible for her father’s death. After the challenge of going through and successfully completing Secret Service Training Academy, Elaine is transferred to her first work place. But with Mike Wells things are never boring and her career does not go as planned, so Elaine soon tastes betrayal and adventure that lead her and the reader to different countries around the world.

The world Mr. Wells has created in the series houses international criminals, counterfeiting, suspense, intimacy issues, getting through old emotional trauma and much more. The author must have done quite an extensive research on the above topics as well as on the different settings where the narration leads his characters, which adds a very realistic feel to the series.

The characters are vivid, three-dimensional and you want to learn more about them. Have you noticed how certain authors are great at describing and analyzing but when it comes to dialogue you think: “Oh, my God! Nobody speaks like that!”? Well, that cannot be said of the dialogue in the books of Mr. Wells!

In the 3 books I read the action was very dynamic and captivating, with lots of twists and turns, so as all other readers claim – it was practically impossible to put the book down and I read all three in one go. With the first book of the series, though, the reader might feel a little tricked as the narration ends quite abruptly but I think this just amplifies the suspense and the “unputdownable” effect.

Being a life-long fan of the mystery genre, I can say that "Lust, Money and Murder" is an excellent story, written in a compelling manner, full of interesting characters and unexpected turns and is worth reading.

This was my first attempt at an audio book and I haven't read the original book yet, so the story was completely new to me. I was a bit nervous thinking about this review, but here we go! I will attempt to not include any spoilers - it is tough when you are writing about 3 books though.

Mike Wells really does write 'unputdownable' novels! At first I thought 'how long is it going to take me to get through 10 hours of an audio book.' Well the answer was less than a week. I listened while getting ready for work in the morning, while driving to work - instead of the radio and any moments in between! It was completely addictive.

Narrator 5/5 : I thought the narrator was awesome. She changes her voice and accent as the characters change and really gives a good performance. Sue is easy to follow and listen to. Her pace is perfect.

Characters: 5/5
The characters are well rounded, interesting and lovable. You love the good ones and you love to hate the 'bad' ones.

Elaine Brogan

Book 1 : I easily connected with Elaine. She is lovable, soft, caring and smart, but also has the strength to always do what is right. I quickly found myself rooting for her. Elaine works for what she wants. I took to her story quickly and definitely enjoyed her growth and learning curves. One of the things that bugged me and which made me feel quite sad for her was that she had such a bleak view on sleeping with someone and finding someone special. I almost threw a party when she met Nick! But we will get to Nick a bit later on. I really enjoyed her time in Bulgaria and felt that this was a turning point for her. Her feelings for Nick were a bit torturous in the beginning and bitter sweet when the romance finally happened. I really wanted to shake some sense into her when she did what she did at the end and for not trusting her instincts more.

Book 2: In this book I felt for her and just wanted her back with Nick! As a secret service agent sometimes I wished she could be a bit more kick-ass - but I did appreciate that she could think her way out of a situation. This was a tough period for Elaine and I wished she had connected some of the dots sooner. None-the-less this book was fast paced and full of twists.

Book 3: this is the book where Elaine's lines blur, and she learns who she really is as a person. She does get seduced a little bit by the wealth, the power and the corruption. I was a bit angry at Elaine when she lost her will after the Nick incident and that she let Caterreti do what he did to her, even though I could understand why. Once the real Elaine was back and thinking clearly, I was so relieved. I wanted to climb in there and help her. Elaine's story tugs at your heart strings and draws you in. The ending of Elaine's story was perfect - I was almost in tears.

Patrick - her dad. I liked him. He focuses on his daughter and loves her so much. He sacrifices much for her.

Nick Le Grange

Book 1: I immediately liked Nick. He is true, honest, street smart, witty and your good/bad boy who doesn't follow the rules. What u see is what u get. Nick is my favourite character in this series and I would love to read it from his POV to hear his story. Although some of Nick's actions come across as shady, he is so much more than he appears. I was so happy when he finally admitted his feelings for Elaine and took the chance with her! #TeamNick

Book 2: Nick is not really featured in Book 2, but I believe he is a good guy and he truly loves Elaine. I missed Nick's presence in book 2 and was so annoyed that Lassiter kept Nick and Elaine apart unnecessarily and so easily. The whole way through this book I was hoping Nick would show up.

Book 3: When Nick finally arrived I was jumping for joy and was then in utter shock! Nick didn't feature much until nearly the end, which was a really long wait from book 1! When the Nick incident happened, I was in utter disbelief. I was secretly hoping it wasn't what it seemed to be. I am really looking forward to reading/listening to more of Nick's story in Volume 2.

Jean Lassiter

Book 1: Jean plays a very minor role in book 1. He is introduced while Elaine is being trained at the secret service as one of her lecturers. Near the end Lassiter appears again and changes the whole story, setting the scene for book 2.

Book 2: I could tell Jean had ulterior motives. I wanted to knock him out for keeping Nick & Elaine apart. I really didn't like him much. He works Elaine to the bone on his secret project and then sets her up. He is a twisted old man that many underestimate.

Book 3: In this book, all of Jean's true colours show. In the end I actually felt sorry for him and when the twist came about Gypsy..! I was busy doing my mascara getting ready for work and my jaw literally dropped and I almost made a complete mess of my make-up! After the jaw dropping shock I burst into fits of giggles.

Georgio Cateretti

Book 2: We first meet Georgio after he 'rescues' Elaine. In the beginning he is so charming and he draws Elaine in and seduces her with wealth, power and designer clothes. I'm sure he has cracked even the most committed women - the life of corruption comes across as a life of pure luxury.

Book 3: Georgio is an intriguing and extremely interesting character. He is such a likable criminal and charming gentleman with a wicked temper. In this book we get a clear glimpse of his past and how he became the way he is now. When his darker side did show, I literally loathed him. No pity here. In the end though, Mike created a really memorable and great character.

Plot, Pace, Writing style: 5/5
The pace of all 3 books is great. The plot is captivating and kept my attention - I just wanted to keep on listening. It is tough to judge Mike's writing style through audio, but Mike kept me interested and definitely kept me wanting more.

Book 1 ~ Lust: Has great pace, lays a great foundation for the series and ends with a huge twist.

Book 2 ~ Money: picks up exactly where book 1 finished. The end of book 2 was sort of blasé. No huge ending but definitely a meaty middle book. I really missed Nick but really enjoyed Georgio Cateretti's character.

Book 3 ~ Murder: has a bit more kick, everybody's true colours come out, and the lies are unravelled. Just when you think you know how it's going to end, Mike throws in another twist. If the book didn't end the way it ended I was going to have some real issues to chat to Mike about! The ending of this book and this series was perfect.

Cover talk 2/5: I am not overly fond of the cover. It's ok.

My Final thoughts:
This is a fantastic story about love, friendship, betrayal, revenge and truth. Elaine's life and journey is easily relatable, filled with good times and tough or dangerous situations. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery and suspense type book with a touch of romance.

Favourite Quotes

There were quite a lot of quotes I would have loved to catch but being an audio book, I didn't really get them. My most memorable and favourite quote was:
'Let's synchronize our dops'

Lust, Money and Murder
Mike Wells

Cover Design- The cover is somewhat generic for the trilogy. It has a hint of what's to be found in the books. It's not too over powering but could be more eye catching. 3Stars

Character Development- Well's main character, Elaine, is introduced to the reader as a child. Then you follow her as she grows. You become engrossed in her life, in her revenge, even in her disappointment when she learns he revenge is pointless. Wells has given the reader a character they can connect with. 5 Stars

Concept- As far as concept goes Wells doesn't have anything new, however the way he has written it, is fast paced and exciting. The first part about the experiment is intriguing and pulls the reader in. It's obvious Wells did research on his idea before he wrote his novel. I learned things about the Secret Service I never knew. 4 Stars

Plot/Sub-Plot- At first Wells sets the plot in motion as revenge. Elaine has good reason for wanting revenge. Then as the book progresses you find it's more the subplot and what happens in Elaine's life as a whole is more the plot. Wells catches the readers attention and keeps the story progressing at a pace that the reader doesn't get marred down with trivial facts. He leaves you wanting more at the end of each book. Don't just buy book one, buy the trilogy so you can make one continuous read. 4 Stars

Entertainment Level- I found Lust, Money and Murder entertaining. It took me on a roller coaster ride with Elaine. I was there when her mother walked away. I was the when she wanted to become a model. I was there when her heart was broken and she vowed Revenge. I followed her through school, encouraging her as she went through Secret Service training. When her first boss put the moves on her to her second that she fell in love with. For every moment I was there encouraging her or getting angry. 5 Stars.

Overall I give the trilogy 4 Stars

First, a warning: If you're going to read this, make sure you get the omnibus version. Despite how some versions of this book are marketed, this is NOT three books in the same series, this is three thirds of ONE book. It was a marketing gimmick by the author that he has since abandoned, though some versions of the split book are still floating around the Internet. I read part one: Lust, thinking was a self-contained story and got really annoyed when I found out it wasn't and I had to go looking for the other two-thirds of the book.

This author has a reputation for writing unputdownable books and I can see why. I got through the first third of this book in one sitting. I loved the character and her journey to becoming a Secret Service agent. The second third wasn't as gripping. It spends a lot of time doing a Godfather II sort of thing; relating the entire life-story of the bad guy. All this time, our heroine is completly passive, which is at odds with how she's portrayed in the first third. The final third seemed rushed to me. Maybe it was because I was reading on my Kindle and I was only at 70% when the book ended. The remaining 30% was the beginning of another book. I never read those add-ons, teasers, whatever you want to call them. Even when Stephen King or someone does them, because 1) I don't want to read the start of a book and then have to stop, and 2) I never read two books by the same author one after the other.

Mike Wells is a great writer and I may revisit his work again, it's only the thought of getting trapped in some other annoying gimmick that that stops me, but I think I'll get over that.

The book revolves around a female secret service agent with a possible happy ending, but the author had committed three fatal mistakes that weaken the character.

First, to set up an antagonist, then revealed he's already dead without even allowing Elaine to face him. Readers who anticipated the big showdown then got crushed by this. Second, Elaine couldn't set priority straight. When she became involved with the mafia, instead of using her skill to outwit the criminal, she somehow had the feeling for him? Her supposed to be strong character weaken by her indecisive. And finally, when that criminal she attracted to began using her as a sex toy, I thought, is she going to let him keep doing that? A hero may lose today, but she or he must never give up. The book could have told a great story if Elaine didn't keep getting swayed by men.

Despite what I said, there're also things I like about this trilogy. I like Elaine's survival instinct that shines when no attractive man nearby. I enjoyed all the airport scenes. And the insight of counterfeiting activity is also enjoyable to read. With these in consideration, instead of two stars, I gave three.

I'm really at a loss for words about how great this little trio/ quad was. Mike Wells did everything that a good author does to make a story great, plus he did all the things that writers don't extend themselves to do to make a story greater. There are four most shining aspects about this series. First, is that Wells makes a masterpiece out of characterizing. Secondly, plot and motive are airtight throughout; I've never seen more thorough plotlining. Thirdly, mood is established and present from page to page. Fourthly, was credibility!!!--- this is essential in crime fiction, right? But you'd be amazed. Everything was so frickin believable!!! This was a great trio, I've purchased Book 4, and will most likely finish the series. Mike Wells is a treasure.

Oh yeah, it's written plainly too. It's not convoluted or stuffy. Still, at the same time it's very rich writing, you can really imagine the foreign destinations.

It starts off from Elaine Brogan's point of view, but there is a LOT of male first person as well, so guys don't throw it out immediately. This series is a cliffhanger, and apparently goes on for 11 books, so it's a no for a quick resolve. Still, I had a really good time reading this.

Fast-paced, addictive, and impossible to put down!

Mike Wells delivers a thrilling rollercoaster in Lust, Money & Murder, the kind of book that grabs you from page one and doesn’t let go. Elaine Brogan is such a compelling protagonist, smart, determined, and deeply human. I loved watching her journey from a rough upbringing in Pittsburgh to the heart of international intrigue.

The plot is packed with action, twists, and emotional beats that hit just right. You can feel the screenwriting influence in how cinematic the scenes are. It honestly reminded me of Sidney Sheldon, sharp female lead, non-stop pace, and just the right amount of romance and revenge.

Also, the counterfeiting details were spot-on. You can tell the research was thorough, but it never dragged, just added depth and realism.

If you enjoy authors like Lee Child, John Grisham, or James Patterson, this series is definitely worth checking out. Looking forward to diving into the rest!

Deception

The book cover does not do justice to the story inside. You would think that it was just a slutty porno tale instead of an action packed adventure.
An interesting story, but I couldn't help but wonder why a highly trained agent would not use physical force against more of the jerks that were screwing up her life. As a female in a typical male job market myself I long ago realized that a journey forward often ment having to step around obstacles to get to the goal. You never know when a new set of job skills can prove useful in advancing. Ending up as a married mommy in a small town did seem like a flat ending, but then there are still some villains that want to see her dead......

pretty interesting main character

Good character development for the protagonist and the main “ villain “, secondary character a bit less so, tertiary one are very banal (villains son, even main love interest, etc).lots of action, good descriptions on environment without being overdone.

This trilogy (books 1-3) were free on KindleUnlimited. A significant part of book 4 is included, then pages direct you to download Lust, Money & Murder Book 4, but ….. it doesn’t exist. Book 4 has been rebranded at the first book in the Russian Trilogy (although the link with the first 3 books is maintained by subtitling it’s as LL&M book 4. Either way book 4 us not free, but books 1-6 as an ebook set is free with KindleUnlimited as of 10/2022.

Entertaining

This proved a bargain as a box set. Three books were free and then obviously we had to buy the next book. It was a very good set up for the reader although I did choose not to continue with the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first three novels despite the fact the books are more inclined to tell the story rather than show it. It was however done with humour and provided a smooth even levelled pace which took us to the conclusion in a satisfactory manner.
I struggled to connect with the characters but did enjoy their escapades and certainly there was plenty of action, deaths and danger throughout to keep us page turning. An entertaining read.

THREE BOOK SERIES

BOOK #1 is the foundation storyline about a young girl from Pittsburgh who is exposed to different levels of crime and resolves to seek a career in the Secret Service in order to bring justice for the death of her father…. BOOK #2 is focused on her government career in fighting a counterfeiting ring in Europe and falling in love with her boss…. BOOK #3 is about being recruited by the Treasury Department and becoming involved with the kingpin of the counterfeiting organization…
Overall, it’s a very good series with each book building upon the previous storyline. RECOMMENDED

The first book of Lust, Money and Murder series was really thrilling. I loved the limited POV and, the characters are life-like and relatable. I really loved how the settings changed to different countries and showed multiple cultures. The only let down was lack of description in some parts. I, myself hate unnecessary, long descriptions, yet some scenes would be more appreciating if the descriptions were added when the characters were in a brand new city.
Overall, it really was a good read. Anyone who's into Thriller and Mystery with a bit of romance sure gonna love it.
