This is the first collection of “Piedmont Naturalist” columns written by Bill Hilton Jr. His 38 essays originally appeared in Sunday editions of The Herald (Rock Hill, South Carolina) between April and December 1986. The author’s love for natural history is eloquently and elegantly expressed in his tales of happenings at Hilton Pond and other locales in the Piedmont—that fascinating area between the mountains and the Coastal Plain.
