I am not a classicist (and neither do I play one on TV), but I have an interest in Rome and specifically Roman slaves, and it's hard for me to imagine a better treatment (for my leisure-reading purposes, anyway) of Roman slave law. It was definitely a book for the specialist, and I have to admit that there were a few topics I didn't have the background to understand, but Watson gives a very thorough examination of pretty much everything you could want, with copious quotations and citations. If anything, I just wanted there to be more information, but I suppose I can hardly blame him for that.
