Lords of Vice #4

Sunrise with a Notorious Lord

Rate this book
Dashing, decadent, and deliciously seductive, the notorious Lords of Vice indulge their every desire―from dusk until dawn…

Christopher Courtland, Earl of Vanewright―known around London as "Vane"―is the very picture of a rich, handsome ladies' man. Why shackle himself to just one lady when he's free to sample them all? In spite of his own mother's attempts at matchmaking, Vane has sworn to stay single. Until he has a chance run-in with Miss Isabel Thorne… A modest and refined beauty, Isabel is a lot more brazen than she appears. When a pickpocket tries to make away with Vane's bejeweled snuffbox, Isabel attempts to thwart his escape…and manages to steal Vane's heart. But the harder he tries to seduce the sharp-tongued, strong-willed Isabel, the more she resists. Now it's up to this tried-and-true bachelor to find a new way to play the game…or risk losing the one woman who's ever captured his heart.

Is it just me, or were there about 50 pages or so missing towards the end of the book?

Things were going along great, albeit a little less developed than Hawkins previous books in the series, and then all of a sudden it is as if a major event was skipped in the book.

I liked Vane and Isabel, although like I mentioned before, they could have been developed more. Things seemed to just jump around, and the other Lords of Vice seemed to be just tossed into the story for no reason other than to include them because it is their series. I do not think it is always necessary to include every single previous character in each book within a series. Sure, it was nice to see the previous books couples, but it did not really do anything to further the story and the pages would have been better used to learn more about Vane and Isabel.

Some spoilers:

There were so many possible storylines that were thrown out there but never actually followed through on that I am still not sure what the main plot was. There was the scheme to get Isabel's sister married off to Vane, but we never actually saw any real interaction between them; there was the possible altercation with Isabel's grandfather, but again there was no interaction and for all we know maybe he really did want to talk to her; the plot about Isabel's fathers work and having to sell it off; the very unfinished business with Delia and Mr. Ruddel; and WTF was going on with Isabel's mother? Is it addiction to laudanum that she is dealing with or is she just an embarrassment? And why did she randomly decide to go to London? So confused. In fact, I originally gave this book 3 stars, but I just can't justify that so I'll be going down to 2.

I will definitely keep reading this series since I loved the previous books, and I hope this book was just an aberration or was rushed along by the publishers...

Sebetul nya buku tentang Lord of Vice ini sih standard lah seperti genre2 HR yg mengandalkan tampang ganteng dan cantik..tapi ga tau kenapa, aku kok suka ya sama mereka.
Note this, ada 7 orang anggota nya Sin,Dare,Reign,Vane,Frost,Hunter dan Saint, yg terkenal notorious, brandalan, nakal dalam tanda kutip, kumpul di Nox, klub hedonis ala jaman dulu.....semua di provide, dari minuman keras, judi, sampai perempuan2 high class buat melayani mereka...notorious abis... [image error]

[image error]

Buku ini bercerita tentang Vane....no.2 paling notorious after Frost deh....ga minat sama pernikahan sama sekal...prinsip nya, kalo perempuan manapun bisa tersedia setiap saat, dan bisa semua jenis dia coba, dan willing pulak...buat apa menikah dan terikat dengans atu perempuan? [image error]

Sampai akhirnya dia kemakan sumpahnya sendiri, entah kenapa dia sore itu berniat memutuskan hubungan dengan mistress terakhir nya, dan gak berminat buat punya mistress lagi season ini....celibacy...yg tekad nya di ketawain terutama oleh Frost.....tenang Vane..kau aku dukung 100%..go go go Vane.... [image error]

[image error]

[image error]

This was a easy, pleasant read in the series....

Our Lord Vane has been pimped out by his mother for years for matrimony. He fights it tooth and nail, but he is a bit of a Mamas boy actually. I kinda adored how much the two loved each other.

Our fine Mother concocts a plan to bring two very pretty sisters into her house from the country and let them have a season. Unbeknownst to Vane, it’s under the guise of marrying Isabel’s sister Delia. That’s not how it plays out though, even though Isabel’s in on it. For our proper, overworked, country girl falls in love with him, and likewise.

Here though is another book with unresolved questions. What happened to the grandfather? Why didn’t they go after Ruddell? The man was a creep. They just let Delia leave?

I’m finding these reads frustrating now. I just want to get to Frosts book, lol. I like his evilness, but I’m worried I might not like the book. I’m getting whiplash reading this series.

SUNRISE WITH A NOTORIOUS LORD by Alexandra Hawkins
Lords of Vice Series #4
01/12 - St. Martin's Press - Mass Market Paperback – 287 pages

Is it possible you were created just to bedevil and bewitch me?

Christopher Avery Courtland, Earl of Vanewright is determined not to get married. He is been sticking with this theory while at the same time attempting to stop his mother from trying to make that happen. When you have one of the most conniving of woman as your mother you have to out fox her but this time he may have been caught in a trap of his own making. The problem is not the woman his mother is pushing on him but her sister giving him a reason to blush, the radiant Isabel Thorne.

Isabel has always been as much a parent as a sister to Delia so trying to get her married off to a titled gentleman is the perfect set up. With an introduction into London society promised, Isabel takes Vane’s mother up on her offer to get Vane interested in Delia regardless of the consequences. Problem is with great plans and organized thinking is that when the heart takes over all rules and clear thought fly out the window. Isabel is trying to stop this over whelming desire to rush into Vane’s arms and feel his lips brush hers. This trip has been nothing but trouble, confusion, and terrible decisions that keep leading Isabel back to Vane.

Vane has led the most spirited life imaginable with his friends and never thought he was ever going to marry. Nevertheless, there stands Isabel with her innocence and striking beauty flowing around her like roses falling from the vine. Vane knows that Isabel cannot be his but has that stopped him before, no and as tempting as Isabel is in the simplest of frocks he cannot stop imaging the magnificence of seeing just her bare shoulder.

This book starts on a fast pace and never slows down. The action between the characters is riveting and when one pushes, another one shoves all to achieve their individual goals. One man has no way of defending himself when all these women have a plan written in such a lovely fashion by Ms. Hawkins.

I've been reading the series as each book has been released and the previous entry was a HUGE disappointment. I was ready for redemption; however, my concerns began when I picked up the book and found it was under 300 pages with a larger font size. OK, look - the book wasn't *terrible* - it had good potential with a somewhat unique setup: H has a meddling mother wishing to see him married; h, as default head of her family, is her accomplice in trying to marry off her sister. The problem is that it never really delivered. Characters and their backstories are never really developed. At times the story feels disjointed: as if chapters were added and removed without much regard to flow and craftmanship. Editing errors abound. I didn't hate the story -- it's readable -- it just was a letdown.

It seems to me that the author and publishers are simply pushing out the books for the sake of releasing them. The kicker is that they are sending out easily avoidable reads -- right now, I would tell any newcomer to The Lords of Vice series to read books 1 and 2 -- nothing in the books 3 or 4 really provides any key info -- especially this one. (We learn next to nothing new about any of the other series' regular characters). The trade-off is this is a really fast read -- definitely could be read in one sitting, if you have a block of a few hours to spare.

With 7 Lords in the Vice gang, there's still time to save this series. I sure hope Hawkins can figure it out by the time it is Frost's turn (book 7, I'm sure). I'm counting on that one to be a standout!

I read it in an afternoon, and yet I didn't like it as much as I wanted or hoped to, I think?
It didn't grab me like some of the previous books had, although I do plan to re-read it.
It's just... the whole book seemed obvious might be the word I'm looking for.
I'm surprised Isabel was tricked by the plan to get Vane to marry Delia.
And that Vane didn't see through his mother - if all these characters are really so smart and clever, shouldn't they have known? The signs weren't just all there, they were almost slapping you across the face.
Also, it seemed as if the other Lords of Vice were an afterthought. Although I do always like a glimpse of Frost, I'm disappointed he wasn't more developed. It might also be because it's been such a long time since I read the previous books, but the other characters other than Hunter felt mentioned out of obligation, more than for plot.
(Apparently I'm impossible to please because I don't like it when secondary characters take over the plot/use what should be someone else's story as their introduction. So I need a perfect balance.)
Still - average - as in a good book.

I really liked Vane - although he was a bit of an idiot, and really liked Isabel, poor girl.
I was a bit confused - perhaps because I had an ARC that the "conflict" was resolved in the way it was (and that it you know - happened as it did.) Hence the forthcoming re-read.

It was ok.

Super tacky cover made me kind of embarrassed to read it on public transportation, so I read it only at home.

My main problem was that I felt like a chapter was missing. As of page 239, Isabel is dragging her mom out of a ballroom, trying to avoid Lord Botley and as far as I could tell they all think Ruddel is her fiance and no one knows of her plan with Lady Netherly.

On the NEXT page, Chapter 27, she claims her whole world had crumbled... um, how? Nothing happened at the ball (that we're told of), her mom doesn't embarass her, they don't run into Lord Botley at all and apparently out of nowhere Vane suddenly knows about her plan. I went back twice to make sure I hadn't missed a conversation, a chapter or something. I felt like the book took a giant leap forward with no context or explanation.

A few other things kind of bugged me, I didn't buy the sex addict who likes to have sex with all women, multiple women at one time, women in public settings etc, suddenly deciding to settle down.
I kept thinking of all the STDs those guys have got to have if they were all sharing prostitutes & mistresses all the time.
I'm also pretty sure they didn't use the word F**K in those times, so that was a little anachronistic.

Despite his mother’s persistence, Christopher Courtland, Earl of Vanewright, more commonly known as “Vane” has managed to keep himself clear of her matchmaking attempts. Although at times overly clever, Vane has come up with a solution to this season’s attempts, celibacy. He sees no other way around keeping himself out of a loveless marriage and all is going according to plan, until he meets Isabel Thorne whose quick temper and precise aim has him at a disadvantage for the first time in his life. He wants to know more about the independent beauty who doesn’t fawn at him like the other ladies of the ton, in fact she seems more inclined at pushing him towards her sister as well as putting him in his place, than she does at seeing him as a romantic interest. Not unlike his nickname, Vane decides this is the type of woman who he could spend the season with, as a friend, nothing more, but sometimes best laid plans have a way of finding a path of it’s own one that could include Vane losing his heart along the way.

This is a review of the first four books of the Lords of Vice series, originally posted on My Book Musings.

The series is about the friendship and discovery of the seven most debauched lords in society, the Lords of Vice, namely Sin, Reign, Dare, Vane, Saint, Hunter, and Frost. Their names are actually derived from their aristocratic lineage. For example, Frost’s title is actually Lord Chillingsworth and Dare is Lord Mordare. I like Alexandra Hawkins’ play on their nicknames using their lineage.

All books are very romantic and exciting. I’m not really into the bad boy types, and these Lords of Vice are seriously as such, but Alexandra Hawkins managed to still make them desirable despite their serious moral flaws. I suppose you can say that the love they eventually found with their significant others redeemed them from their past, may I say extreme, debauchery.

I love the friendship and interaction between the seven, although I find it weird that they fight amongst themselves so often. Then again, it doesn’t even seem to be an issue with them anymore. The friends accept that they are like that and they just deal with their issues with each other through their fists. I’m not a fan of violence, though, so I’m glad that it was only referred to most of the time instead of it being a central part of the book.

Another thing I like about the series is that the women are not characterized as strong, independent women then later depicted as weak and foolish. However, despite the commonalities in the series, the women are still distinctive from each other.

The book is actually a bit forthright with uh some of the activities that the lords do, so I highly recommend that you be 18 and above before you read the book.

The four books so far do not disappoint and they actually made me want more. I’m so excited for the upcoming fifth book, All Afternoon with a Scandalous Marquess, although what I’m really waiting for is Frost’s own story. I’m guessing that the sixth book, however, will be about Hunter and Frost will be the last. Honestly, if you read the series, you’ll find that his story is just right to be the last because he is frequently mentioned in all books AND he seems to play a significant role per story. The lack of further background and discourse about Frost is just maddening! Maddeningly exciting, that is. My interest at this point is highly aroused because I really want to know why he is the way he is. To get my point, go get your own copy of the book. It would be a fantastic read for your Historical Romance collection.

Ciao!

I will be up front, this was not my favorite book of the Lords of Vice series. I couldn't remember why. Of course, I have been re-reading the books, since Alexandra Hawkins had a new Lords of Vice come out this past month. Here is what the story is about:

If you have been following the series you would know that Christopher Courtland, the Earl of Vanewright has been trying to avoid his mother's machination to marry him off. However, his mother has come up a foolproof plan. What can go wrong?

This time his mother has found two delightful girls who might make the perfect bride for her Christopher. The only problem is getting them to London. So, basically she gets them to partake in the season. Lady Netherly told Isabel she wanted to set up Vane with her sister Delia. Thinking what is best for the family, Isabel agrees to Lady Netherly's plan. However, it doesn't go according to plan? Or is that what they are suppose to believe.

At the beginning of the story, I remember the reason why the story wasn't my favorite. I couldn't stand Delia for being the self-absorbed girl that everyone loves. Trust me she is self-absorbed, and that's being nice. While Isabel is trying to keep the family afloat. So, much responsibility is thrown on to Isabel, because she can't count on her mother. However, that is a personal reason and it shouldn't stop you from checking out the book for yourself.

After re-reading the book, the story grew on me a little more. It's just as good as the others. Still not my top pick out of the series, but I gave it a second chance and I would re-read again. I still love the series. This book might worm its way up the ladder, but it might take sometime.

That's all for now and I hope that you are enjoying what your reading. In the next couple of days you will be seeing Saint's story. So long and happy reading.

The Lords of Vice are a notorious group amongst the ton. Vane, the current vice in question, is not looking for a wife. In fact, Vane is doing all he can to avoid his mother's matchmaking attempts. Until he meets Isabel Thorne. Isabel is in London hoping to give her younger sister a season to remember. Lady Netherley, Isabel's host and Vane's mother, would love for her son to wed Isabel's sister, Delia. While attempting to make the match happen, Isabel has no idea that Vane has other plans in mind.

Sunrise with a Notoroius Lord was a very fun read for me. I just finished a very dark horror and needed something lighter. Most of the novel is told from Vane's standpoint and I love when authors do this. The love story between the two characters was not at all fairy tale-ish which I adored. I felt as if I was reading about two very real people and that was a wonderful change of pace. Readers will enjoy the writing style of Alexandra Hawkins

The books from this era have become my new obsession. I love reading them and seem to devour them. this book proved no different. I loved the title female Isabel and the title male "Vane." Isabel stuggles to remain practical and realistic. fighting for the future of her family and her home. She seems to deny herself the chance at happiness. under the belief that duty is better love or happiness. Vane makes her finally question that belief. vane the serial bachelor doesnt want to find love let alone marriage. but with isabel challanging him seemingly every time they meet the bachelor has met his match. its great to read thier stuggles her fighting to be reasonable and practical him fighting to never be tied down. I LOVED IT. and i will certainly look into the other books of this series.

Though I liked both Vane and Isabel, I thought their story missed the boat. Things were going along nice and smoothly and suddenly Isabel grabs her family and leaves town. Why? WTH happened that wasn't discussed in the story? And all of a sudden Vane just knows that Isabel and his mother were working together to trap him in marriage. Again, where did this sudden knowledge spring from?

Other than these two glaring problems, I enjoyed Vane and Isabel's courtship and the give and take between them. I wasn't surprised Vane tried to get her in bed but I was surprised when she agreed so readily. Hmmm not a bad addition to the series but not a great one either.

Vane's mother is setting him up with a girl as she wants him to marry. The girl is supposedly Delia--or is it Isabel? This could have been amuch better book, but it is as though the author just wanted to get the book finished and on to the next. Every description of Vane's mother included her age. His father tells him he is dying but not only does Vane not care, neither did the author since it is never mentioned again. The others have to be better--hopefully not worse.

Christopher, one of the notorious Lords of Vice, must take a wife or risk being cut off by his fed-up father and meddling mother. He was never supposed to be the heir, but he needs to start taking his responsibilities seriously. Or else.

Isabel is the dutiful, strong-willed older daughter of a philosopher father and a wastrel mother. She will do whatever it takes to see her younger sister married and married well.

Isabel has found herself roped into Christopher's mother's meddling, but will she find herself roped into Christopher's seductive ways instead?

Stand Alone or Series: While this can be read as a stand alone, there is a group of male friends as the focal point. I found it a little hard to keep everyone straight without having read the other books, BUT you can read this by itself.
.
Overall, this title has great pacing and makes for easy reading. While this book fell flat for me, I'd be interested in reading the other books in the series in the future.

The main issue I have with this book is that it feels like 100 or so pages. There are weird gaps in the storyline that make me feel as though an editor cut passages out. I ended up going back and seeing if I maybe missed something along the way, but no. There are just details and conversations missing from the book that made the relationship not less believable and led to some confusion.

The one redeeming quality was that I enjoyed the meet cute and found it to be rather original. I also enjoyed the Lords of Vice group and their wives.

As for steam, this is a lower steam book. However, the scenes are well-written and detailed. Hawkins doesn't use much explicit language, and her description of acts and body parts are, largely, eluded to or a bit flowered. Readers will need to hold out for a while before the real passion hits but will enjoy some steamy kisses along the way.

Nice easy read

While I enjoyed reading this story, it's nothing to get excited about. I finished this book in under 4 hours.
Vane's mother was ingenious and probably my favorite character in the book. I absolutely adore intelligent women who figure out how to get what they want without tears, tantrums, or sulking behavior. But instead use their brain to come up with interesting ways to see it done. Especially in the times when women had few rights and men ruled everything. Isabel and Vane fell right into her schemes and it was satisfying to read it all unfold.

I really liked Isabel and her matter of fact outlook on life. She's no missish delicate flower with fits of the vapors. Vane's mother is a hoot and I loved her constant schemes to secure a wife for her reluctant son. I wish Isabel's sister, Delia had more of a comeuppance, because she dearly deserved it.

There were a ton of typos in my copy of this book but the story was good. I hadn’t read the others in the series so I didn’t know any of the main characters. The characters seemed very harsh and I really wasn’t too interested in following the series.

So sad I didn’t like this one. The setup was good but the rest of the book didn’t work for me.

Gue sukaaaa..

Kakaknya si pewaris pertama tipe2 yg taat gt, die as a hero, pas perang, kakak ke 2 nya mati tenggelam pas mo nolongin orang tenggelam, as a hero pula, nah si Vane ini rake dari jaman muda. Gaulnya sama Lord of Vice, punya club judi dst dst deh.

Isabela Thorne, cucu Earl (apa ya gw lupa gelar kekeknya) tapi ga diakui karena emakny (anak Earl) merit sama orang biasa (peneliti apa penemu gt deh bapaknya). Bapaknya meninggal kr lab nya meledak, emaknya drama queen dan adeknya Daisy susah banget diatur. Isabela gantiin peran emaknya, ngurusin rumah, ngeberesin utang papanya, ngurusin adeknya yg nyebelin banget.

Vane kesel banget pas tau Isabel ude mo punya tungangan, tp ya namanya bkn Vane kan kl nyerah.. trs dimana pas tunangan pura2 Isabel aka pacarnya Daisy nyusul ke London? trs pas Vane tau semua muslihat Isabel sama emaknya? tapi untuk ukuran Lord yg mati-matian kaga mau merit, Vane justru ngejar-ngejar Isabel tanpa ampun hmpfh

banyak dialog kocak deh... dan ribuuuuutt mulu kerjaannya ehehehee XD

Isabel Thorne life has been anything but easy. Her father's death lead to her mother's inability to deal with everyday life, leaving Isabel to take care of the household herself. With limited resources, this hasn't been easy; her father was only a mere working man, a philosopher of sorts, and though her mother was born the daughter of a lord she was cut off completely the moment she married Mr. Thorne. Isabel has come to accept that she will never have a glorious life, but if she can at least keep her younger sister, Delia, from trouble until she marries, she will be content. This is no easy task when her sister only wishes to flirt with every man she meets, but has no wish to marry yet.

It is because of her sister that Isabel gets the chance to go to London for a season. A lady of the ton asks her to come to town, with Delia, for the purpose of trying to arrange a match between her son and Delia. Isabel agrees, but doesn't realize at the time all the trouble this plan is going to be. Nor does she realize that the lady's plan all along was not for Delia to be the bride, but rather Isabel herself...

Christopher, more commonly known to the world as Vane (Lord Vanewright) is anything but tame. He is, in fact, one of the Lords of Vice, a group of young men that are said to participate in truly scandalous affairs, as well as own the Nox club, which is known for its less than honorable reputation. Like the rake he is, he has been avoiding his mother's matchmaking attempts for two years now, but can he outwit her yet again, or will he find himself leg-shackled to some young heiress by the end of the season?

When he runs into the enchanting Miss Isabel Thorne while trying to break off an affair with his current mistress (while in a seamstress, of all places!), he thinks nothing of it. Her younger sister is with her, and while many men would no doubt say that Delia is more beautiful, his eyes kept straying to Isabel instead. Little does he know that she is plotting with his mother, trying to set him up with Delia. He has no attraction to the younger Thorne sister, but Isabel is a temptation he finds himself unable to resist. Could the infamous Lord Vane finally have found the one woman who can tame his rakish soul?

Upon finding out about her connection with his mother's plans, Vane casts Isabel aside; how could she lie to him like that? He trusted her, believed she was one of the few honest women out there, and he had come to think of her not only as his friend and lover, but as, perhaps, something more permanent. After confronting his mother with the discovery, he finds out that perhaps Isabel was telling him the truth all along—or at least the truth as she knew it... It seems his mother was trying to be sneaky about all of it and only told Isabel that the matchmaking was to be between Vane and Delia, when instead she had set her eyes on Isabel for a future daughter-in-law. After the cruel way he treated her, how can he ever convince Isabel that he is the right man for her—the only man for her? By the use of some late night seduction of course!

I liked this book, I truly did. However, I didn't love it. I had a hard time connecting real well with the characters.

The fourth Lord of Vice to fall in love is Lord Vanewright or "Vane." His mother is all about matchmaking schemes and he's been doing his best to avoid them since he doesn't really care about his familial duty and he really enjoys women. Isabel is responsible for her family and has to deal with a very strange and embarrassing mother and a spoiled, selfish little sister (but Isabel only makes it worse). After meeting up with Vane's mother in the country, Isabel becomes part of a plan to matchmake Vane and her younger sister. Only Isabel finds herself falling for Vane and he is absolutely intrigued with her, mostly because she absolutely refuses to chase him for marriage (and why would she when she expects her sister to marry him?).

In one respect, this was quite enjoyable. I liked Isabel and felt her frustration for her sister Delia, though I found myself seriously wondering what Mom's problem was. Of the Lord's of Vice, Vane manages to top out the ranks with "Reign" as being one of the most moral of the bunch (and that's saying something...). So I liked the characters and I enjoyed reading about them. I didn't find myself wondering how anyone could fall in love with Vane (which I have done in previous books of the series). It was a quick read with an interesting romance. A bit of angst in there too. I did get a bit frustrated with Isabel over her double standard for Vane - how could she not forgive Ruddel for kissing her sister, but forgive Vane. It's not like he was pushing her away or anything. He even commented later that it was mildly pleasant - so he had a bit of time to make that assessment...

That being said, did someone go tearing out pages at the end of the book? How did Vane figure out the matchmaking plot? What happened with Lord Botly? We are definitely missing some pages here. It's like the editor cut the author off at a certain number of pages and just took out what they deemed extraneous information (only not all of it was so extraneous). It felt seriously rushed. .

I also have to comment that the heroes that this author puts forth have a certain degree of ruthlessness and sometimes heartlessness that really makes me uncomfortable. I mean, in this book we have a fairly decent guy, although this is special behavior. He admits that for some reason, he simply cannot be callous with Isabel (presuming he can be with everyone else). Later, in a darker moment, he fantasizes about marrying Delia while still enjoying Isabel in his bed. And this is after he knows that he loves her, but I'll grant that he's angry. But yikes! There are other such moments, not heavily emphasized but that give an insight into the character that make you wonder if he isn't really an asshole. IIRC, Sin and Dare were way worse. And Frost - we haven't had his book yet, but I have to wonder why those guys are even friends with him. It seems like everyone hates him. Even me.
