Emma was born in Minnesota and she lives in the Midwest, though she grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She attended Illinois State University where she majored in geology, and there she met her husband, Chris. They have three children, a temperamental cat named Poot, and are lucky enough to live on a beautiful lake. On warm days, she does enjoy a glass of wine on the dock now and then, and always loves to sit at her desk, winter or summer, and tap at her keyboard.

This was a weird one, friends. I almost rated Twice Fallen 2 stars to be generous - I did finish it, after all - until I remembered that a whole lot of nothing happens in this book. I'm not saying that the book is plotless, but I do think I read books with more plot in elementary school.

My main complaint is the lack of focus on the main characters. According to the blurb, Twice Fallen is about wartime spy Lord Damien and ruined spinster Lady Lillian becoming embroiled in a Ton mystery together. I expected some love wangst, some implausible sex scenes, and a tortured confession by one of them that they could never really love. Maybe some danger and knife fights. You know, a story about the main characters. Unfortunately, what I got instead were some glossed-over encounters between Damien and Lily, a half-baked mystery plot, and a shitload of scenes between a secondary couple that had next-to-nothing to do with the main plot.

In the first 100 pages, Damien and Lily take part in a couple brief conversations. That's it. They check each other out, she wonders about his crippled leg, he wonders why she's still single, and then they go their separate ways. Damien gets a few pages of text due to the fact he's getting pulled into some spy plot to track down the person blackmailing and sometimes killing aristocrats, but that's about it. We're told that Damien's a super awesome spy and that Lily's intelligent and, of course, "different than the other girls in her social circle," but they do nothing to support these claims. Everything is told to us instead of shown.

On the other hand, in the same 100 pages, the secondary couple - consisting of Lily's cousin James and some lady named Regina - have sex a whopping 4 times, three of which are written in full-blown sex scene mode. We don't see how they meet or why they become attracted to one another. I just opened up Chapter 4, and BAM! Two virtual strangers are fucking all over the place. James and Regina aren't bad characters, but their insertion into the story is so random and jarring that I kept wondering, "Why the hell are these people in my book?" There isn't any juxtaposing of the couples or social meshing. It would go from Damien nosing around about Lily's life and making a big deal about his limp straight to James and Regina meeting up and banging in an art studio. Near the end, the couple do end up in the same place. I think that was supposed to be significant, but I didn't really care at that point. So what? In Regina's defense, she does save Lily from a knife-wielding mad-woman by literally happening upon the scene. It was unintentionally hilarious because Lily has no idea who Regina is, nor does Damien when he enters the scene, because NONE OF THEM HAVE FREAKING MET YET.

By the time Damien and Lily have sex, it seems incredibly rushed and out-of-the-blue. One moment, they share politely inquisitive glances in ballrooms, and the next, Damien decides he can't live another minute without banging her. If a little more time had been spent developing these characters and their relationship, the timing for their hook-up would have been splendid. Unfortunately, they just seemed like strangers who had dragged me through a whole lot of misdirecting filler to get to an underwhelming declaration of mutual lust. The shame in it is that Damien and Lily seem like cool people. Neither of them particularly offended me, even if they didn't interest me. Unfortunately, no time was put into developing them into full characters, which seemed like a waste. There are no real obstacles in Damien and Lily's relationship. I'm not exaggerating, either. Not even a misunderstanding to stoke the flames. Just a bunch of blah, blah, blah.

So I definitely wasn't impressed with this story. It's also part of a series, and the epilogue suggested that the next book will be focused on a frumpy little miss who likes to garden and also likes to complain about people who don't understand her and also people who don't garden. Or maybe it will actually be about some distant cousin of the frumpy miss's who has an affair with Hero A from Book X's cousin. I won't be buying the next one to find out.

What I Liked:
Emma Wildes has made fan out of me with her imaginative writing. Every time I pick one of her stories, I know I won't get bored. In this one we have a mystery and 2 love stories :)
Lily and Damien are intrigued by each other from the start and this continues throughout the book. Damien is a bit secretive, but as he spends more time with Lily he starts to confide in her. They make a great team.

Favorite character: The Dowager Duchess was so much fun!

The library scene when they first met.

Would I recommend the book: Totally!

I rated this 3 stars the first go around but I’m upping the rating on this one too for the second time around. The mystery was good and I liked following along with the clues this time and I enjoyed seeing the characters from other books again especially since they were all fresh in my mind.

This one covers the story of Lilian Bourne (Johnathan Bourne’s ruined half sister from A Whisper Away) and Damien Northfield (Colton Northfield, the Duke of Rolthven’s younger spy brother from Secrets of a Scarlet Lady) as the primary romance. The secondary romance includes Regina Daudet, the illegitimate older artist sister of Luke Daudet (Our Wicked Mistake) and James Bourne, Lilian and Johnathan’s cousin (also introduced in A Whisper Away). As you can see, it was a lot of familiar characters if you’ve been reading the books! I enjoyed that aspect a lot. It was like hanging out with old friends. Now, I really like Lily and I felt that Damien while interesting was not romantic enough for her. He was often preoccupied with the mystery they were working on and I felt that Lily deserved more but she did seem to like the unorthodox courtship so that’s good at least but I personally would have wanted more romance! Ha! James Bourne was the romantic hero of this book. He truly accepted Regina and all her artistic free spirited ways even when she was blind to how good she had it. I got tired of their sensual scenes but once they really started getting into their problems as a couple and talked and peeled back the layers of what they wanted, it was quite interesting.

Overall a nice inclusion in the set but not my favorite. However, it was nice to see Luke and his wife Madeline, Colton and Brianna (she is always so funny), Robert (no Rebecca though), the Dowager Duchess of Eddington (A Whisper Away), and the notorious Rothburg Advice once again!

Injured war veteran and former spy Damien Northfield has been called upon by his friend, Sir Charles Peyton, to put his former spy skills to good use in investigating the potential blackmailer and murderer of several nobles within their circle. Lady Lillian (Lily) Bourne, with the enthusiastic assistance of the Dowager Duchess of Eddington, is re-entering society and the season after a disastrous elopement to Viscount Sebring which left her reputation in shambles. While attending the latest formal ball, Lily retires to the library for a moment of solitude from the evening’s social expectations only to discover Damien being pursued by Lady Piedmont, wife of the man who is pursuing the seat of Prime Minister. Lady Piedmont’s forward nature is quite irritating to Damien whose intentions were to also seek a moment of solitary refuge. With a firm and quick rejection, he places her outside the hall of the library and quickly locks the door. Damien knows there is someone else in the room and after pouring himself a well needed brandy, he announces his knowledge of Lily’s presence and makes his introduction. Both are intrigued by the other, but Lily knows her reputation cannot afford another scandal, so she precedes to leave, only to break the key in the lock and cause them to be stuck alone together in the library. Finally realizing escape through a secret passage is their only option, they brave the darkness and arrive at the cellars unscathed and unnoticed. Lily returns to the ball and Damien quietly takes his leave. Upon pursuit of information as to the mystery of the blackmailer, Damien quickly learns that Lily may be the connection due to the circumstances surrounding her scandalous elopement. Once a spy, always a spy, Damien sets out to find out the true nature of the circumstances surrounding Viscount Sebring’s rejection of Lily and also hopes to answer a few of his own personal feelings with regard to his new found pursuit of Lillian Borne.

This is my first disappointing read by Emma Wildes and to be honest, I almost DNFed the book. The pace was very slow after Lily and Damien’s initial meeting. They had very little interaction in the first half of the book and Ms. Wildes focused more on the blackmail mystery (which was lacking in itself) as opposed to the romantic nature of this couple. I was truly bored through the majority of the book and this is a first for me with Ms. Wildes’ work. For a spy, Damien’s personality lacked flair and enticement. His character was overall flat even in his personal pursuit of Lily. (It was page 192 before they experienced their first kiss.) I am a reader of many genres and when I read historical romance I do not expect a “smut” aspect. However, I do expect chemistry and passion and to be captivated by the main couple in a way that just the sexual tension is enough to satisfy. I never felt like Lily and Damien developed those attributes and therefore, their interaction was quite mundane in a romantic sense. What saved the book was the developing romance of the secondary characters, James Bourne (Lily’s cousin) and artist/painter Regina Doudet (half-sister of Viscount Altea). Regina is seven year’s his senior and after being deeply hurt and betrayed by a lover years ago, she has decided that she has no intentions of seeking love or commitment with any man-until James. Regina and James chemistry was immediate and charming and their seductive story is what kept me reading to the end.

The blackmailer’s identity was obvious early on and provided little drama to the overall storyline. Sebring’s reasoning as to why he did not marry Lily and allowed her to take the fall of their elopement was a mystery that was quickly solved as well. Disappointedly so, the overall tone of the story is not what I have come to expect from Ms. Wildes. I am hoping this is a one time incident and that her future books will once again feature her well-known ability to create engaging and appealing romance.

Exceptuando um começo não tão auspicioso, o meu fado com Emma Wildes é longo e tem vindo a cimentar-se de obra para obra com uma espécie de afecto crescente, um afecto que me desperta a vontade constante de conhecer as suas personagens e que me torna uma fã incontornável dos seus enredos.

As palavras desta autora são, na minha opinião, sempre doces e assertivas em relação ao estilo da sua narrativa, já os seus intervenientes tendem a ser curiosos, enternecedores e, decididamente, atrevidos para o seu tempo mas, confesso-vos, é na sua abordagem à sociedade do período da Regência que esta escritora ingenuamente me cativa – cuidando espelhar pormenores pertinentes, sem esquecer o requinte característico do ton londrino, e divagando, ainda que por vezes muito levemente, sobre problemáticas adequadas ao princípio do século XIX -, enquanto me cultiva e entretém profundamente.

Traída pelo Destino é o título dedicado, em particular, a Lady Lily, irmã do Conde Selvagem e uma personagem já conhecida dos leitores de Emma. Ao longo deste texto muito acontece e, finalmente, é-nos revelada a dimensão do passado desta jovem mulher desonrada aos olhos dos seus pares, enquanto acompanhamos um antigo espião da Coroa Inglesa envolvido nos meandros de um mistério que tem vindo a deixar um rasto de sangue sem explicação. Mas, porque Emma não se cansa de surpreender, este é também um texto que nos permite revisitar e conhecer as singularidade de Regina, meia-irmã de Lorde Altea, e o eternamente querido James, primo de Lily, duas personagens que anteriormente desempenharam um papel secundário e que agora têm um merecido protagonismo.

Para quem leu os livros anteriores desta escritora, publicados pela Planeta Manuscrito, acredito que sentirá, como eu senti, que esta história breve mas consistente é um pequeno mimo para os fãs. Digo isto porque, embora o número de personagens principais seja superior ao habitual, assim como as secundárias, todas elas já nos são familiares e, melhor ainda, todas elas souberam suscitar o interesse em livros anteriores, o que a meu ver é uma mais-valia – e sim, descobri-las em pleno e rever amores já consolidados é algo que, numa série, me traz sempre uma enorme satisfação.

As protagonistas, Regina e Lily, têm como pontos em comum o facto serem bastante mais inteligentes do que o aconselhado para a época, assim como o facto de não serem vistas com bons olhos pela sociedade – uma porque é bastarda e outra porque viu a sua reputação manchada após ter fugido, quatro anos antes, com aquele que julgava vir a ser o seu futuro marido –, no entanto, enquanto uma é rebelde e vive indecisa entre a independência e a cedência aos sentimentos, a outra, Lilian, ambiciona um futuro, um amor igual aos que desfruta no seu local favorito, a biblioteca. Em qualquer dos casos, dadas as circunstâncias, o certo é que ambas têm um caminho atribulado rumo à felicidade.
Os homens desta história, por sua vez, também não tem decisões fáceis pela frente e, de uma forma geral, são bem diferentes um do outro. Damien, mutilado da guerra, vive os dilemas de qualquer solteiro, com um passado conturbado e sem a certeza de querer realmente comprometer-se, enquanto James deseja, ardentemente, fazê-lo ao lado da fogosa Regina que lhe devora totalmente os sentidos. Cada um deles tem características atractivas mas, segredo-vos, o primo de Lily irá, certamente, derreter o coração das leitoras mais românticas.

Li Emma Wildes pela primeira vez no início deste ano e lembro-me de ter ficado encantada com a história que contou em Sussurros Ousados . Quando Traída pelo Destino saiu, segundo livro da mesma série, quis confirmar que realmente ler esta autora acaba por tornar os serões mais leves e com uma aura de extrema descontracção. Desde um sorriso a uma gargalhada, desde emoções fortes a alguma apreensão, a autora sabe como conduzir o leitor numa viagem encantadora.

Lady Lillian Bourne tem o seu passado manchado. Não que tal carimbo seja de todo justo, mas o que é certo é que da fama já não se livra e como tal, desde então, não se esforçou sequer para arranjar novo companheiro/marido. A insistência por parte da mãe, dada a situação económica da família, cria uma pressão gigante, mas há algo de que ninguém desconfia e que fará com que Lillian não ceda facilmente... Ela procura emoção, paixão, algo que a faça sentir única e não apenas mais uma. E a culpa é toda de Lorde Damien Northfield.

Damien é um retornado da guerra, com as suas marcas físicas e psicológicas, mas que não abdica dos seus prazeres carnais. Sem saber muito bem porquê, desta vez quando volta a Londres não traz ninguém consigo. Não houve mulher alguma que tivesse despertado o seu interesse ou o tivessse excitado o suficiente de forma a levá-lo a envolver-se... Até que Lillian lhe aparece à porta com uma proposta no mínimo... insólita e irrecusável. Juntos irão experienciar toda uma nova vivência.

Uma história de época nos moldes tradicionais, mas que muito pouco tem de típico no que toca a Lilly em relação ao comportamento típico das senhoras daquele tempo. Lillian mostra-se irreverente, com personalidade e dona do seu próprio nariz. Damien rapidamente dá conta que não está perante uma mulher comum. Também toda a intriga criada e torno das chantagens e das possíveis implicações com o passado de la ajudam a criar uma teia de tensão à volta do romance levando-nos a querer chegar avidamente ao fim.

Num registo muito leve, divertido e romântico, a escrita de Emma Wildes mostra-se completamente adequada ao tipo de enredo que narra. Qualquer romântica incurável verá neste tipo de obra uma excelente companhia e um bálsamo para o coração. Não achando tão empolgante como Sussurros Ousados , ainda assim foi uma leitura muito agradável.

Romance, a dose certa de humor e um pouco de acção! Não há como conseguir escapar à mistura de ingredientes que vamos encontrando ao longo das páginas deste livro. Emma Wildes, que todos já conhecemos, consegue novamente fazer-nos viajar no tempo e transporta-nos para uma época em que as aparências estavam no auge.
Este não é apenas um bom género literário, é aquele que mais gosto. Poder ler acerca desta época é um prazer que não deixo escapar e Emma Wildes é sem dúvida uma das autoras que mais se destaca. Este livro pertence a duas series distintas, os seus protagonistas já apareceram antes e por isso era um livro à muito tempo aguardado pelas fans da autora. Damien Northfield é o irmão do Duque de Rolthven (protagonista do livro “Lições de Sedução”) e Lillian é a irmã de Jonathan (protagonista do livro “Sussurros Ousados”), a junção destas duas personagens acabou por se tornar perfeita devido às personalidades marcantes destes dois e também ao passado de ambos. A cena inicial, em que ambos estão presos na biblioteca é hilariante e muito bem construída, acabei por dar umas bocas gargalhadas á custa deste início. Em relação ao resto do livro, apesar de não apresentar nenhuma novidade de enredo, apresenta uma história com fundações muito próprias e demonstra também uma excelente continuidade para com o livro “Sussurros Ousados”, principalmente no que diz respeito à antiga relação entre Lillian e Lord Sebring. Apesar disso, havia já muita coisa que não recordava em relação ao livro “Lições de Desejo” e que foram aparecendo ao longo deste livro, foi muito bom rever Brianna e o seu livro que tantas delícias fizeram ao longo daquelas páginas e que tanta animação trouxe. Aquele livro acabou por se tornar numa relíquia de família!
Quanto ao final, acredito que a autora irá ainda escrever os livros referentes a Vivian Lacrosse e Lady Juliet Stather, personagens que parecem ter despertado a atenção da condessa viúva. Vamos esperar para ver! De momento, este é um livro a não perder.

Good read, this almost felt like a 2-in-1 book with the main story featuring Lily and Damien and a side story featuring her cousin James and Regina. Personally I could have done without James and Regina taking up so much of the book. It felt to me like they should have had their own novella but at least it neatly wrapped up and tied together.

I do not read an Emma Wildes book for some time and now that i have read this one i want to continue with this style in my next reads.

One thing i have difficulty was remembering all the character's (and their stories) from previous books, since it was a little ago i decided to not worry about it and just enjoy this as a stand alone book and not force myself to make many connections with others books.
This works for me, and sometimes i even came to remember bits and things from the other stories.

As for this book in particular, the characters are very sweet and we get to see two main romantic couples (instead of one) what was really a surprise. I like the fact that the author insert the second couple to give the spicy moments that we are used in her books and also i really like James and Regina story.
As for the plot i was not expecting the result of the investigation, it was very well thinking. Although the main romance i think is lacking, i don't know why but i do not get the flames i was used to in their books, they are sweet and i like them together but the overwhelming feeling is not there.

As a result of this i gave 3 out of 5* to this book. I recommend it to everyone you likes historical romances but with a spicy to it.

Well, the mystery had a totally unexpected ending which I liked. But the book itself just felt ‘off.’ There were two totally unrelated romances going on. There’s the main couple, I guess, Lillian and Damien. But then, thrown into the book for no reason that I can think of, is a relationship between Lillian’s cousin, James, and Regina, an artist, who are having a torrid love affair. The two stories have absolutely nothing to do with each other except for a brief scene at the end of the book where Regina just happens to be at the right place at the right time.

It would have been a much better book if the author has concentrated on the one couple.

Lady Lillian Bourne is nearly compromised at a party while seeking a quiet moment in the library. Lord Damien Northfield helps her out of her difficulty but not before he’s intrigued by her. Disabled by his time overseas when he’d been a spy, he’s now involved in a case at home for the government involving blackmail and murder. And it just so happens that Lily’s ex-fiancé might be involved. While Lily and Damien are busy getting to know each other, her cousin James is having an affair with an older woman. In this regard, I found the viewpoint switches to the other couple to be disconcerting. Otherwise, the romantic entanglements mixed with murder and intrigue make for an entertaining read.

Tinha ficado bastante curiosa sobre a Lady Lillian Bourne no livro anterior, mais ainda sobre o tal escândalo e qual seria o verdadeiro desenrolar deste..

Fiquei completamente apaixonada por este livro cheio de mistério, intrigas e romance 😍

Senti pena - inicialmente - da Lady Lillian ao ver-se novamente numa posição delicada com Lord Damien, outro escândalo não seria nada bem vindo.

Adorei a forma misteriosa da chantagem - terão mesmo de ler - e mortes que aparecem e acreditem, em nada esperava na tal revelação!

Adorei ter sido surpreendida, porém no gostei de que este assassino saísse impune.

Ficamos também a conhecer Regina, a meia irmã de Lord Altea e claro, o nosso James.

Um livro fantástico!!!

Apesar de ser licenciada em Geologia, Emma decidiu enveredar por outra aventura, a dos romances históricos, isto porque os livros sempre fizeram parte da sua vida e escrever era tão natural quanto pegar num livro. Casada e com três filhos, Emma vive ao pé de um lago e nos dias quentes gosta de beber um copo de vinho na doca mas, faça chuva, faça sol, Emma adora mesmo é sentar-se à secretária a escrever uma nova história.
Em 2005 viu o seu primeiro livro publicado e hoje tem onze séries publicadas e mais onze livros independentes. Algumas dessas séries estão interligadas entre si como é o caso das publicadas pela Planeta Manuscrito. É também autora de livros de suspense com o pseudónimo de Kate Watterson. Traída pelo Destino, publicado o ano passado e ainda só traduzido para o nosso país, é o seguimento de Sussurros Ousados e Lições de Sedução.
O escândalo pode vir de um olhar mais demorado, de um toque mais atrevido, de um encontro longe dos olhares indiscretos. A ruína vem dos sussurros, dos olhares gelados, da incriminação. Não é preciso haver prova de pecado, basta apenas uma pequena desconfiança espalhada por salões. Lillian sabe o que é ser alvo do desprezo da aristocracia e, que mais um passo em falso pode levá-la à exclusão social para sempre. Damien tem a certeza que já não sabe viver de festas, jogos e ócio. A guerra mudou-o radicalmente e ele precisa que algo interessante aconteça na sua vida mas voltar à antiga vida e descobrir uma jovem que é capaz de o surpreender, não era bem o que procurava. Entre chantagens, encontros secretos e escândalos, Lillian e Damien vai-se conhecendo melhor até que o interesse se torna algo mais.
Emma é daquelas autoras que eu tenho sempre uma vontade enorme de ler mas que vou adiando até mais não. Traída pelo Destino é o segundo livro que leio da autora e parece que tenho tendência para os seus livros dedicados às espionagens e com as mesmas personagens, o que foi uma surpresa. Com uma escrita agradável, fluída tanto romântica como intensa e dada um humor especial que nos faz sorrir, Emma tem como ponto a favor o facto de os seus livros nos apresentarem sempre pormenores realísticos da época em que escreve, o pós-guerras napoleónicas, pelo menos no caso dos livros que li, e das suas relações amorosas serem sempre diferentes do que poderíamos estar a espera. Outro ponto que marca a diferença é o facto da autora dar-nos sempre duas histórias paralelas, o que umas vezes é bom mas por outras retira alguma profundidade a ambas as histórias pois ora parece que avançam muito rápido, ora parece que não avançam de todo mas neste livro até houve um certo equilíbrio.
Com um enredo cheio de intrigas, chantagens, paixão e doçura, conseguimos ver duas perspectivas diferentes, a de uma jovem cujo nome já está na lama e que tem uma oportunidade para o salvar e de uma mulher que sendo filha de um duque não consegue contudo livrar-se do facto de ser ilegítima. Dois assuntos que mostram bem o pensamento da época e o papel da mulher e que a autora consegue usar muito bem a seu favor. A história de Lilllian, supostamente a principal, tem um carácter mais doce e mais lento, perdendo pelo simples motivo de primeiro começar muito lentamente e para as últimas páginas se resolver demasiado depressa pois parece-me que num livro só dela a história poderia ter tido outros contornos e tido sido melhor. Quanto à história de Regina, bem, esta personagem merecia ter tido um livro só dela. Num enredo mais sexual, consegue contudo desenvolver-se melhor, talvez pela presença mais marcante desta personagem feminina e pela forma como a relação dela com James acaba por ter alguns contrapontos.
A história de Lillian e Damien ganha pelos encontros fortuitos mas interessantes das personagens mas principalmente pelo mistério que Damien tem de resolver. O esquema das chantagens desenvolve-se de uma forma inesperada e tem reviravoltas surpreendentes, tendo sido mais por elas que gostei desta história. Mas ambas as histórias têm a sorte de serem diferentes entre si, bem como a personalidade das personagens. Vemos o desenvolvimento de dois amores muito diferentes, que se movem em locais diferentes e que são condicionados por razões completamente opostas, o único problema é eu achar que apesar de equilibradas cada uma delas merecia mais desenvolvimento.
Do casal Lillian e Damien, acho que eles deviam ter sido mais desenvolvidos. A relação deles é interessante, mais terna e curiosa mas falta qualquer coisa. Já Regina e James têm outros factores a favor deles. Regina é uma personagem muito forte e James acaba por atenuar a irreverência dela e fiquei com pena de não o conhecer melhor. As personagens secundárias, algumas minhas conhecidas, são sempre um ponto a favor pois Emma sabe usá-las de forma a dinamizar a história. Gostei de rever Luke e Madeline, fiquei com vontade de conhecer os casais Northfield e Bourne, por isso deverei ler os livros referentes a eles.
Emma vai aos poucos conquistando-me mas este ainda não foi O livro que me deixou mesmo apaixonada apesar de irmos num bom caminho. Traída pelo Destino é uma história que marca pelo mistério e pelas perspectivas diferentes de amor mas que poderia ser muito melhor.

Lady Lillian Bourne once eloped with Arthur, now Lord Sebring, but the man apparently changed his mind once they reached their destination and ended up marrying another woman. Oops. In the four years since, Lillian is a social pariah who is only now slowly coming back to polite society. While she wants to be the model of propriety this time around, she finds herself locked in a room during a party with Damien Northfield, our hero who is naturally a former spy and all-time rake.

He is in town to help a friend look into the matter of this friend's cousing being blackmailed, and it soon suggests that Lillian is a part of this mess, even if she is in the mess as kind of unwitting bystander in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's convenient that he's also attracted to her.

Meanwhile, Lillian's brother James is involved with Regina Daudet, an unconventional artist. She's supposed to be merely his mistress, but things become complicated when they realize that they are more fond of one another than they initially expected. Oh, what to do?

Twice Fallen is part of the Ladies In Waiting series, but it can stand alone. This does not mean that it is an easy read, however. There are many secondary characters here cluttering up the place and interacting with our main characters in a rather superfluous "Aren't we happy? Yes, we're so happy!" manner that adds little to the plot. Normally, it's nice to see our main characters have so many friends, but there are already two romances here and a mystery subplot. Cramming the story with such scenes means that all these plot elements end up being on the underdeveloped side, especially the story of Regina and James.

I mean, yes, it's so nice that Regina and James love each other, but so what, right? Unless I subscribe to the belief that one has to marry after one is in love, there is no compelling reason why these two can't just continue to be all sweet and randy in their love pad. People in that time do the nobleman-mistress thing all the time. Okay, even if I buy the fact that James loves Regina so much that he has to marry her, I find it hard to belief that he is so casual about this. There will be implications to his social standing, and his whole life would probably have to change. Addressing all this would actually make James's determination to marry Regina more romantic, as he would be sacrificing some nice things to be with his love, but instead, the author just waves any potential complications aside using the "Who cares what people think?" line of reasoning.

Worse, it is Regina who starts moaning that she is not worthy to marry James because of her pedigree, blah blah blah. This completely ruins her character. She's supposed to be this free-thinking feminist sort, so to have her start acting about how she really wants to get married but she can't because she loves the man too much - that turns her entire personality into a lie. At the end of the day, Regina is just another typical romance heroine.

Lillian and Damien also have their story ruined by the author's dipping into unimaginative clichés. They have some good chemistry, but yikes, when details come out about her relationship with Arthur, she turns into another martyr who selflessly sacrifices her entire existence because she cares too much about her friend and she also wants to marry for love (and she'd rather be ruined forever than to be in a loveless marriage). While the whole thing makes me roll up my eyes, I have to admit that the author manages to tie the whole Arthur issue nicely into the rest of the plot. However, everything about this plot is a cliché piled upon more clichés, right down to the identity and motivations of the one-dimensional villain. Who is pegged as insane because, you know, evil people can't go about being evil without being insane as well. I actually thought the mystery was fascinating - and was thus frustrated when the mystery kept being interrupted by ballroom scenes or scenes of secondary characters showing me how happily married they were - so the whole denouement being a barrage of tired and overused plot devices is a huge let-down. I feel like the author has wasted my time, actually.

Twice Fallen has some intriguing premises, and the story does have some potential, but there are too many things here and not enough space for them to become fully fleshed out. The characters are interesting in their own right, but they are acting out story lines that are unimaginative and too familiar for their own good - story lines that do not allow these characters to shine as much as they should. Therefore, this story never comes together as well as it should have been. It's still a decent read in many ways, which makes it all the more disappointing at the end of the day.

Gostei muito deste segundo livro da série "Ladies in Waiting". Não consigo dizer se gostei mais ou menos do que do primeiro, acho que foi verdadeiramente como que uma continuação e portanto é-me difícil agora separar um do outro. Adorei a Lily no livro anterior, e estava ansiosa por ler este e acompanhar a sua história. Emma Wildes não me desiludiu! :)

Lily continua tão interessante como antes, gosto da personagem dela, da integridade e da bondade, adoro o seu hobby (claro!), e gosto que seja corajosa sem ser, contudo, desafiadora. Gosto que tenha tido a sua segunda oportunidade mas, acima de tudo, que tenha tido a possibilidade de escolha.

Damien...bem! Damien está, por um lado, pior explorado em relação aos restantes personagens. É novo para o leitor, e acho que podíamos saber mais sobre ele, sobre a forma como chega a determinados sentimentos e conclusões. Contudo, é um personagem intrigante e interessante. Antigo espião de guerra, não se retira realmente da profissão agora que regressou a Londres. As suas reações a Lily eram mais analisadas na minha mente do que na história, por ele mesmo, e esse exercício de adivinhação foi, por ser inesperado, bem vindo :)

Lily e Damien conhecem-se de uma forma bastante ortodoxa, e saber apenas no epílogo do livro que as coisas podiam ter corrido de outra forma, não fosse Lily corajosa e Damien tão curioso, deixou-me a sorrir até à última página. A forma como a relação deles evolui parece repentina, mas aquele medir de forças que acontecia em quase todos os momentos em que se cruzavam conduziu perfeitamente ao que esperava. Admito que não contava com a intervenção do informador de Damien, mas adorei as poucas linhas em que o escocês falou :p

Quanto a James, mais uma vez leva aqui vantagem em relação a Damien porque já o conhecemos do livro anterior. E como eu gosto do James! É o verdadeiro cavalheiro andante :) Adorei a sua história com a Regina, que o obriga a sair um pouco da fachada de perfeito e convencional lord inglês, levando-o a revelar mais de si com o passar do tempo.

Já Regina foi uma novidade neste género de história. Fez-me recordar por momentos uma personagem de um livro de outra autora, de que gostei muito, e portanto o primeiro contacto com a personagem da Regina garantiu logo que teria lugar no meu coração! As mulheres mais duras e mais independentes são também as que dão mais valor ao amor e às cedências a que este obriga, isto na época retratada no livro, claro está. Mais velha que James, não é bem recebida pela alta sociedade inglesa devido à sua ascendência, mas a sua maravilhosa família compensa tudo isso. É uma artista, que faz o luto e aceita o amor através das suas pinturas. E é uma mulher que viu o seu coração partido quando era jovem, precisando de alguém (mas nunca o admitiria!) que ajude a colar os pedaços :)

Gostei da forma como ela e James terminaram, embora ache que mereciam mais. Mereciam muito, muito mais, na verdade. Mereciam um livro só deles, uma maior profundidade de história. Mereciam, no mínimo, um lugar no epílogo, merecíamos nós uma visão deles no futuro. Mas mesmo sem tudo isto (que lamento muitíssimo!) são um casal maravilhoso :)

Quanto ao mistério que obriga Damien a trabalhar mesmo depois de terminada a guerra, gostei! Gostei de ter percebido antes do suposto quem era, e, de mesmo tendo já isso quase, quase como uma certeza, ter sido surpreendida mais à frente no momento em que a autora decide confirmar essa minha descoberta. Uma vez mais, acho que foi resolvido à pressa, o que lamento. Gostava de ter percebido realmente o desfecho, e gostava de saber como ficou outra das personagens envolvidas! Mas gostei que fosse quem fosse, embora com base num motivo complicado. Ainda assim, plausível e bem pensado! Deixa-nos na dúvida algum tempo, deixa xD

Estas falhas na parte do mistério foram, para mim, compensadas com a presença de personagens de outros livros que aparecem aqui.

Adorei rever a Brianna e o Colton, de Lições de Sedução. Colton é o irmão mais velho de Damien, e Brianna foi realmente um doce em dar uma ajudinha a Lily (mesmo não se identificando) :p

E adorei perceber que a Regina é irmã do Luke e cunhada da Madeline, de Um Erro Inconfessável. Claro que com um irmão como Luke e fácil ser diferente :p

É muito bom descobrir, sem estar a contar com isso, como andam as vidas de personagens de outros livros, personagens dos quais gostamos muito na altura em que lemos os seus livros :)

Obrigada Emma, mas espero que no terceiro tenhas trabalhado melhor o epílogo, porque andas a falhar nisso :p

O início é de facto muito prometedor, com os dois trancados numa biblioteca, com ela sem querer ser comprometida outra vez (inocentemente deva-se dizer) e com ele todo sedutor, mas que mesmo sabendo uma passagem secreta não diz nada. Assim, Emma Wildes apresenta-nos Lady Lilian Bourne e Lord Damien Northfield desta forma já algo vista, mas que tem sempre a sua piada.

Para minha felicidade, as minhas expectativas foram correspondidas (ver Primeiras Impressões). Traída pelo Destino soube melhor que o primeiro volume, tal como esperava.

Depois, quando tudo apenas parece um romance histórico com as típicas nuances de sedução masculina e de fuga feminina, a autora introduz o que talvez irá enriquecer um pouco toda a obra - a parte misteriosa. Como Lord Damien é investigador, apesar de meio reformado, meio selectivo, vai então haver outro cruzamento de caminhos/destinos entre estas duas personagens.

Estes cruzamentos são como a autora já nos acostumou: escaldantes ao inicio, muito românticos no final. E quem não gosta de leituras assim?

A personagem feminina, como podem ver pela minha pontuação (ver cupcakes em baixo), é uma daquelas de personalidade forte, com um passado doloroso, mas que se entrega na mesma. Personagens fortes é o que se quer e neste livro achei que Lady Lilian correspondia. Lord Damien é o personagem habitual todo 0% de gordura e 100% de charme que nos faz babar quando lemos as suas descrições físicas e os seus atributos de macho dominante, na vida social claro!

De resto, não há muito mais a dizer. Emma Wildes escreve bem, sabendo colocar um equilíbrio entre as descrições, cheias de pormenores da época, e os diálogos, sempre com atritos nos primeiros capítulos e mais carinhosos e cheios de mel no final.

É uma autora que vou continuar a acompanhar, tanto em português como em inglês, e que recomendo, mas avisando que depende das obras e do nosso estado de espírito ou até dos nossos gostos literários.

For Twice Fallen, we move to the eldest half-sister of Jonathan Bourne, Earl of Augustine (who was the hero of One Whisper Away) -- Lady Lillian Bourne. Lillian is a victim of a scandal and is re-entering society. Almost immediately, she finds herself trapped in a locked room with Lord Damien Northfield, a character I believe has been introduced in another of Ms. Wildes' series.

While there is an attraction between Damien and Lillian, theirs is not as instantaneous, all-consuming, or passionate as that of Jonathan and Cecily's. I think part of the reason is the other stuff happening around Damien and Lillian: blackmail Damien is asked to investigate; Lillian's ex-fiance, Sebring and his new wife, who seems completely out to destroy what remains of Lillian's reputation; Lillian's cousin, James, and his affair with Regina.

Given how much I enjoyed One Whisper Away, I expected the same kind of romantic connection here and was disappointed to find Twice Fallen not as strong.

Sempre me tinha perguntado qual teria sido o "fim" do Damien e agora já sei!
Adorei ler, finalmente, a união das pontas soltas!
Adorei rever "antigas" personagens, onde se inclui o reaparecimento de um livro "desaparecido".
Aguardo os livros seguintes com ansiedade, pois parece-me que a Duquesa Viúva está entusiasmada com o seu novo papel de casamenteira.

E como reli o 1.º livro dos irmãos Northfield tive de reler o do irmão ainda solteiro.
E realmente reforcei a minha opinião que após tantos anos já não nos lembramos de quase nada.
Quase sete anos depois só me recordava que o livro aparecia e pouco mais!

Ultimamente os livros de Emma Wildes não tem conseguido atrair-me para a sua leitura, também neste livro não consegui sentir empatia pelas personagens a nivel romántico.Acho que o romance não estava bem desenvolvido.Ficou o interesse pelo tema da homossexualidade e da maneira como era vista nesta época. Também a parte do como Lorde Damien consegue, como bom espião, descobrir a chantagem que é feita aos lordes da aristocracia.
Claro que um romance bem escrito com diálogos inteligentes, com personagens bem delineadas como é habitual em Emma Wildes.Para mim o livro pecou pela falta de um romance mais intenso ente Damiern e Lillian.
Mas uma autora a seguir sempre porque alguns livros são arrebatadores.

Very very nice story. It follows Wildes' pattern of two romances in one - in this case, both of the romances are really fine, although I found the abrupt cutting back-and-forth between the couples (like scene switches in a TV soap opera) a bit exasperating in some places. The mystery that Damien, the main hero, has to solve is fairly interesting too. But the main interest is the development of the 2 love stories, and they are both very satisfying, with the heroines of both especially well developed as characters. And Damien is even more attractive than he was in "Lessons from a Scarlet Lady". Recommended.

This really is 3.5/5 stars. On the whole I enjoy Emma Wildes' work. She always writes two romances in one book (one that is fairly standard and one that is less conventional as a subplot) and her characters are likeable. There really wasn't too much conflict but it was a good way to spend an afternoon.

The key breaks - and their romance begins. Damien is trying to solve a series of blackmails and murders that he connects to Arthur, the man in Lillian's past. Cute story.

Started off with such potential, the lead couples first interaction was brimming with chemistry, humor, and charm, but the rest of the book didn't live up to the opening sequence. The mystery didn't work, and the secondary romance seemed forced, but the promise of that untapped potential will have me giving this author a second chance.
