A Wee Guide to the Jacobites

Rate this book
The Jacobites tried to restore the Stewarts as kings of England and Scotland after James VII had been deposed in 1689. Written from a Scottish viewpoint, this title spans these stirring times, covering the bloody campaign of Bonnie Dundee, the shambolic 1715 Rising, and the notorious '45 led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, which ended in slaughter at the Battle of Culloden and severe retribution against Jacobite clans. There are many portraits, illustrations and maps, plus details of over 50 Jacobite sites to visit.

Well and interestingly written, this little book gives a good a good introduction to the history of the Jacobite Uprisings. It also contains many useful maps, family trees, as well as lists of places [related to this part of Scottish history] one can visit today.

Will definitely recommend this to all my friends who are interested in Scottish history!

I loved this little book. I wish I had it as a starting point for my dissertation way back in 2001. It is so succinct, to the point, with background and rabbit holes to follow if you wish. But all the main players are there, as are the places, dates, why’s and wherefores. Warning for the romanticist - outlander world - seeker, as it is brutally honest about this period of history and does not shy away from the flaws of the Stewart belief in divine right. Oh and the fact that they were more interested in securing the English throne rather than being content with reclaiming Scotland alone.
I totally loved it though and the fact that there is the added info at the back for places of interest to visit.
I will definitely look for further titles in this series that appeal to me.
So good!!!!

Being picky - the image on the front cover is not of Charles Edward Stewart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) it is his brother Henry Benedict - Cardinal York.
