A cross between a human and a bonobo? Carl Sagan and others have Is it possible? What kind of creature would it be? And how might this affect our world? Kelpie Wilson takes the premise and runs with it in this engaging novel. Primal Tears is the story of Sage, born to a young woman who has volunteered to be a surrogate mother for an endangered species of chimpanzee. The process goes awry, and Sage, a lovable youngster, is neither completely one species nor the other. When her existence becomes public knowledge, she needs all the best characteristics of both species to find a place for herself in our human-dominated world.

I thought it was okay. My first fiction novel that I’ve finished. I really liked the characters and was rooting for Sage the whole time. The ending touched my heart.

Very interesting premise coupled with an interesting discussion of ideas, but many of the characters feel more like archetypes than people. The author is clearly more concerned with the polemical side, rather than the narrative. My main problem with the book was that the discussion of feminist mythology and ideals is undercut by the short shrift the writer gives to the experience of pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting - Wilson seems much more comfortable talking about these things in the abstract, rather than describing her characters' experience of these things.

This book is one of my old favorites. It's not the most well written piece of literature out there, but I love it for nostalgic reasons.

It concerns the story of a girl who differs from everyone else in the world, for reasons that differ from anyone else in the world.

It is my intention to become a screenwriter, and this book was one of my first attempts at screenwriting.
I have continually reworked the script, and I still hope there will be a movie someday.
