London 1951. For Evie Smith, mistress to Ted Hopkins, marriage is still just a dream. Ted is resigned to caring for his bed-ridden wife, only briefly seeing Evie and their two girls. Then, just as Evie finds she is pregnant, Ted takes his wife abroad for new treatment. Five years passing with no word, Evie selflessly brings up her daughters, until she falls for charming George Higgins, a popular businessman with an almost endless supply of gifts. Tragically, George is killed saving his mother from a fire, leaving Evie lonelier than ever - but through grief may be her chance of finding lasting happiness.
This is a good story set in the Southern part of London with which I'm familiar. It is a good story but sadly predictable. Some of the writing and descriptions are quite basic but consideration needs to be given to the target audience which is probably not me. Very easy to read and quite enjoyable however.
