The sociology of education by Jeanne Ballentine is a very good introduction to the subject, easy to read and diverse enough, I would say. It presents the different fields involved into the study, with the open systems model, having chapters on the organisational structure, on the influences from society, the life of students and teachers, the impact of race, gender or class, the challenges and the drivers of change.
