About the author

Jacob Burak is a Tel Aviv-based writer who draws from psychology, science and art to examine life and human nature. Since retiring from his business career in 2005, Burak has authored four bestsellers: Do Chimpanzees Dream of Retirement (2007), Noise (2009), Why Kamikaze Pilots Wear Helmets (2011) and How to Find a Black Cat in a Dark Room (2013). Burak holds a BSc in Engineering and Management from the Technion and studied management at Harvard. He is active in social causes, including the Midot organization that rates the effectiveness of NGOs, and Round-up Israel, which enables credit card users to donate fractions of their purchases. In 2013, Burak founded Alaxon a digital magazine featuring articles on culture, art and popular science, where he writes regularly.

עוד ספר מצויין מבית מדרשו של יעקב בורק. כמו בספרים הקודמים שלו, גם בספר הזה הוא מרכז שלל מחקרים בפסיכולוגיה אבולוציונית ובפסיכולוגיה חברתית ומעניק לקורא תמונת מראה באשר למניעים המובילים את החברה ואת האדם כפרט לקבל החלטות בעלות משמעות כלכלית ועסקית.

התחברתי במיוחד לשלושה פרקים:

הפרק שעוסק בשחיקה הדוניסטית - דברים חומריים ובמיוחד כסף, לא תורמים לאושר בר קיימא ומתמשך אצל בני אדם. מכאן שלא משנה כמה כסף יהיה לנו או כמה כסף נרוויח, אחרי תקופה אנחנו מסתגלים לרמת החיים הגבוהה יותר והחידוש והאושר הרגעי מתפוגגים.

הפרק שעוסק באופן שבו היפנים שומרים על החיות ודרך כך גם על הטעם של דגים המובלים מרחוק. היפנים גילו כי אם מכניסים כריש לאקווריום של הדגים, הוא אומנם טורף כמה מהם אבל גם מאתגר את הדגים לזוז ושומר על החיוניות שלהם. באותו האופן עסק שרוצה לשמור על התחרותיות שלו צריך להכניס "כריש" לאקווריום הניהולי שלו, מה שיגרום לניעור של המחשבה ותחרות הישרדותית בריאה שתתרום ליצרתיות ויציאה מהקופסא.

הפרק האחרון שדיבר אלי וגם רלוונטי עבורי הוא פרק שעוסק בעודף מידע וקבלת החלטות שגויה עקב הרעש בתוצאות מדגמים. על פי התיאור בפרק, ככל שדוגמים יותר את התופעה כך סביר שאנחנו חוזים יותר בשונות ולא בתופעה עצמה.

הוא מסביר כי בשל הרעש של המדגם, כאשר לדוגמא דוגמים פעם ביום אז יחס הרעש לעומת התופעה עומד על 30 ל 1. אבל אם את אותה התופעה נדגום פעם בחודש, היחס של הרעש יהיה 2.7 ל 1. הרעש ועודף המידע גורמים לקבלת החלטות שגויה כי היא מסתמכת על השונות ולא על התופעה.

סך הכל הספר מרתק. אחת הבעיות של הספר כמו בספרים קודמים הוא ריבוי הפרטים. לכן, אומנם הורדתי לו כוכב אבל גם מניסיון גם רשמתי לי הערות במהלך הקריאה כך שאזכור את הבסיס של הטיעונים ואוכל לחזור אליהם.

ספר נחמד הקושר בין העולם העסקי, וספציפית שוק ההון, לפסיכולוגיה התנהגותית ואבולוציונית, ומדבר רבות גם על דמותם של מנכ"לים ויזמים מוצלחים. חלק גדול ממנו כבר היה מוכר לי מספרים אחרים, אבל עדיין היה מעניין לקרוא.

The title of this book was intriguing enough to push me to purchase it. Sadly it turns out as an attempt to fit the results of several psychological tests into business life. Most of the tests mentioned in this book were already known to me, so I missed completely the "surprise" revelation factor.

Also, the overall message I got out of the book was that it is relatively easy to make a lot of money, if you know yourself and can manipulate others. Hardly a ground-breaking conclusion. In fact, the same stuff of a thousand other self-help manuals. Could still be of some interest for other readers.

I was familiar with most insights and terms showcased in this book, yet for me it’s always nice to go back to the basics - in everything business, psychology and growth and just in general.

This book was well written, enjoyable, pretty straightforward and I actually did enjoy my reading. The start was a bit tiring for me, had to dive in 40 pages to actually cherish the experience.

It’s an easy book, great for getting into a bit of psychology and business and the psychology behind our actions, behaviours, patterns and thoughts.

nice collection of short stories. Each story starts with a short summary of some psychological research which is later on developed into a business world and to day-to-day life.
Some connections make sense, some are not. Some stories are insightful and some are not.
Overall, this is a light read with some nuggets there.
