From back of book:

With rumors swirling around a series of stolen gold shipments, Wells Fargo sends Zachary Cobb to California gold fields to investigate the unsolved robberies. A gang of vigilantes called the Vindicators have taken it upon themselves to prosecute men suspected of the hold-ups, but while innocent people are being lynched, the real bandits seem able to strike with impunity any time they choose.

Maintaining his undercover status by visiting a cantankerous aunt who lives nearby, Zac discovers that the Vindicators are controlled by corrupt federal officials. He also discovers the judge to be a former commander of a Union prison camp where two of his bothers were imprisoned during the Civil War.

Emily Morgan, whose fiance was lynched by the vigilantes and whose brother is the local sheriff, helps Zac in his search. She is determined to bring all those involved to justice, even if it includes her own kin.

But when Jenny Hays shows up at his aunt's house and is pulled into the mystery, Zac has much more than a dangerous investigation to solve!

This is the second book in the Wells Fargo Trail series. The first book introduced the main character of Zac Cobb who was a Civil War southern veteran now working for Wells Fargo as a detective. This is classic western action in the style of every TV show I loved as a kid such as Gunsmoke and Bonanza. I enjoyed the first book a lot. This one was good except the author left out the little boy whom Zac saved and adopted in the first book. He continued the romance with Jenny but didn't resolve their problem in the end.

This had to be the cleanest western I’ve ever read, and I’ve read quite a few. The addition of a Christian faith element was icing on the cake for me.

The story involves Zachary Cobb, a Wells Fargo crime investigator trying to hone in on a vigilante group called The Vindicators hanging miners and taking their gold claims. He doesn’t even get to the town to which he was sent when he finds trouble. And trouble is what he finds all the way through the book.

Loved it.

Narrator Jack Garrett was very good. Loved his voice for grumpy Aunt Hat. Good job.
