Menstruation

Hasan, the local imam’s son, has the strange ability to smell a menstruating woman among a thousand others. This helps him classify members of the opposite sex with whom he has little contact until the day he has a brief affair with a married woman. This sexual initiation irrevocably transforms him and shakes his entire system of beliefs. Hasan no longer knows what to believe in nor who he is, he just knows he has to avoid the marriage his father has arranged for him. Hasan’s story runs in tandem with Wisam’s, a friend of his sister’s, who is unhappily married and having her first lesbian relationship. Her sense of alienation from her husband, her frustration and her newfound sexuality echo Hasan’s questions about religion, identity and sexuality. Hasan and Wisam will both experience frustration, doubts and ultimately liberation in different ways. Their previously held notions about religion and sexuality are dramatically shaped by their new experiences and the influence of Nadim and Kindah, the progressive intellectuals who help them formulate a new worldview. Abdulhamid’s daring debut novel explores contemporary themes related to sexuality, self-realization and repression within a conservative religious framework and the ways people are able to reconcile themselves with a changing world.

Ammar Abdulhamid, Arabic عمار عبد الحميد , is a writer born in Syria, who holds a Bachelor Degree in History from the University of Wisconsin.

Ammar Abdulhamid is a liberal Syrian pro-democracy activist whose anti-regime activities led to his exile in September of 2005. He currently lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, with his wife, Khawla Yusuf, and their children, Oula and Mouhanad. He is the founder of the Tharwa Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to democracy promotion, peace-building and post-conflict reconstruction.

An interesting look into conservative religion and the moral and ethical considerations both men and women face as a result to the rigidity of rules and overall repression. Also fascinating how solace was found in community and illicit affairs without typical themes of jealousy and betrayal.

Un romanzo discreto, con un po' troppa carne al fuoco, così che un bel po' di spunti interessanti si perdono per strada, a cominciare dalla stravagante dote del protagonista, che non solo classifica i flussi mestruali delle donne con cui viene in contatto, ma è in grado di stabilire "a naso" il grado di felicità.
Il focus sul sangue mestruale è quasi incomprensibile per un occidentale, che non conosce i rigidi precetti che governano le due religioni bibliche in merito alla purità della donna durante le mestruazioni, così poco comprensibile da essere quasi ininfluente nella trama, mentre una maggiore attenzione alle conseguenze dell'olfatto del protagonista avrebbe reso il romanzo più godibile.
Alla fin fine il tutto si riduce a come si devono arrangiare, sessualmente parlando, coloro che vivono sotto il dominio di una religione e di una società repressive, con una rigida separazione e un elevato grado di incomunicabilità tra i sessi (rapporti omosessuali a tutto spiano, in fin dei conti).
Il finale è scontatissimo.
P.S.: una prece per il sottotitolo, che vorrebbe ammiccare al celeberrimo libro di Choderlos de Laclos.

This book was so much more than about a group of people fighting strict sexual constraints within their single-minded society, it was about liberation. Makes you think about us as not just "people", but as Human Beings, Mankind, Living-breathing organisms that are intricate in every sense of the word. Makes you think about what Sex means for us, what is does to us, how, if used horrendously, can destroy our very beings, but if used an a word and image that means the complete opposite, can revive us; transform us in ways we didn't think possible. I had no clue that this book would've been like this for me. I was meant to read it, and I'm grateful I had the chance to.

A very odd and honest little book about the constraints and sexual repression of Islamic society in Syria. The narrative can be quite graphic as exemplified by the main character, Hasan, who has the ability to smell women's menstruation and distinguish between different women by the smell.

The story switches back and forth between several characters who are trying to find their sexual identity in a society that doesn't let them openly do so.

This book is probably not for everyone, but was an interesting read.

Want ze domineert zoals altijd het reukspectrum, vandaag meer dan ooit lijkt het wel, met al die vrouwen die op straat lopen, en zijn reukzin wordt met de jaren alleen maar sterker.
Review : Wanneer je veel leest krijg je af en toe een stoot adrenaline wanneer je een bepaald boek ’aansnijdt’, zodat je er totaal door bedwelmd wordt en je het werk in een adem wil uitlezen. Zo een boek is Een verborgen leven van Ammar Abdulhamid.
De auteur is een Syriër maar schreef het boek wel in het Engels onder de titel Menstruation. Een titel die ik beter bij het inhoudelijke vind passen dan de Nederlandstalige. Want het draait hier allemaal om intieme gebeurtenissen waarover een man uit een Arabische en Islamitische wereld niet op deze manier schrijft. Sterker nog, het boek is een stevig pleidooi voor seks, vrijheid en islam in bet hedendaagse Syrië.


De personages worden ons aangereikt door een onbekend verteller of vertelster die elk personage voorstelt, hun denkwereld analyseert en ook de gebeurtenissen in een verhaal giet.
Alhoewel elk voorgesteld personage op zich een heel belangrijke functie vervult, zou je er Hasan az-Zirkili, de jongste zoon van imam, als centrumpersonage kunnen uithalen. Hij heeft een uiterst ontwikkeld reukvermogen en hij ruikt eerder dingen dan hij ze kan waarnemen. Zo kan hij ruiken wanneer een man en vrouw goede seks hebben gehad en ook de geur van het menstruatiebloed van een vrouw stelt hem in staat om het karakter en de emotionele wereld van een vrouw te bepalen. Vermits zijn vader van hem verlangt dat hij met een traditionele vrouw zal trouwen, ziet hij de toekomst niet echt rooskleurig in.
Hij wil dat seksualiteit, waar hij echt naar verlangt, een belangrijke functie in zijn huwelijk gaat innemen. Het is dan ook een openbaring voor hem wanneer er op een dag tijdens een wandeling een vrouw op hem afstapt die hem vraagt om seks met hem te hebben. Het is een overheerlijke ervaring die hem echter tot nadenken stemt over zijn leven als gelovige.


Een verborgen leven is een goedgeschreven en sprankelend boek dat ik eenieder wil aanraden.

Well, as a novel, its so-so, if not a bit terrible. But as for inunciating sexy trash on my mind, it was simply great.
