And Baby Makes Two

Rate this book
A sharply observed, bittersweet tale of the trials of teenage pregnancy. Lana Spiggs is fed up with everyone telling her what to do. If it isn't her mother nagging and shouting, it's her teachers nagging and shouting. What Lana wants is to be grownup. She wants her own flat, her own husband and her own children - and then no one will be able to boss her around any more. When Lana meets Les on her fifteenth birthday, she knows he is the one. And when she gets pregnant without even trying, she knows it's her ticket to freedom - even though everyone else calls it a prison sentence. But can her dream of Happy Families stand up to reality?

Ide cerita: bagus.
Menggambarkan dengan jelas apa yang ada dipikiran perempuan-perempuan muda yang tidak terlalu mengenal kondom, kurang berkomunikasi dengan orang tua terutama ibu, ketahuan banget ngga nonton stasiun tv khusus anak muda yang sering mengkampanyekan "Say No to Free Sex" tapi sudah terlalu terburu-buru ingin merasakan seks. Dan parahnya, pengen hamil.

Penulisan: jelek banget. Parah. Ngga cerdas.

I am frustrated! I can't believe how thoughtless and irresponsible the MC was in this book. How could she even consider having a baby at 15 to be the best way to start a "mature" life? I had hoped that things would work out in the end but no. Shit just got serious and she was all alone with her baby whom she named after a freaking shoepolish brand.

This story is about a silly, day dreaming, 15 year old. All she wants to do is grow up. She wants marriage, a home, a family and to be an actress. She is so annoying and got on my nerves.
I don't mind when books have a main character that I dislike as long as they have a story that keeps me entertained and other characters that ARE likable. For instance, I did enjoy reading about Hilary and Charley but they were the only ones I really did like.

This book ended very disappointingly. I was hoping for at least some form of a happy ending. It would have been nice if Lana got over Les and told his mother about the baby. It would have been nice to see her go to Hilary for help, bawling her eyes out. I suppose she did get what she deserved. She wanted to be grown up and 'bam' she got it.

All Lana Spriggs wants out of life is to have her own family. Even at fifteen, she knows that she'll only be happy out of her mothers clutches and safely in the arms of her own Leonardo DiCaprio lookalike complete with children. When Lana meets Les she truly believes she's found The One and when she manages to get pregnant without even trying, Lana sees her dream emerging in front of her very own eyes. The truth, however, is very different from the fantasy and not only does Lana have to deal with being pregnant at fifteen but it also turns out that motherhood isn't exactly the walk in the park she had imagined. Is Lana able to keep her fantasy going or is the harsh reality of motherhood going to cause everything to fall around her ears?

With my bookshelves broadening with Young Adult books, I still keep my eyes open for authors that sounds like I would enjoy. On GoodReads one day I saw a book called "My Worst Best Friend" and the thing that struck me about the book was it's cover so I did a quick Amazon search and saw it was by Dyan Sheldon (the book, not the cover) and that, luckily enough, she had a new book coming out called And Baby Makes Two which I was able to pre-order half price. Not wanting to pass up such a beautiful looking book I quickly ordered it and awaited it's arrival. I was browsing my shelves for a bit of light reading and saw that at just over 200 pages And Baby Makes Two was going to be my reading choice on that particular night.

Although I said And Baby Makes Two was a new release, it's actually a re-release and was originally published in 2000 which makes more sense as to why the book appears to be set in the nineties (Discmans, oh how I miss thee). I was interested to see how Dyan Sheldon would write a teenage pregnancy - we've seen and read it loads of times, after all - and it's fair to say that Lana is much like most teenage girls you see on Jeremy Kyle - thinking a baby means happiness and happy every after et al when in reality it's not all sweetness and light. The way in which Dyan portrays it makes it sound so unglamorous that any youngster even thinking of having a baby ought to be given this book to read. It would definitely make them think twice.

Of course before the baby actually comes along, Lana already seems to have troubles as her relationship with her mother is tenuous to say the least. It's due to her mother (kind of) that Lana meets Les, in McDonalds of all places. At first it seems like the dream relationship - as dreamy as a relationship can be when you're a) lying about your age and b) keeping him away from your mother. It all starts to go wrong there after as Lana finds herself pregnant at fifteen and Les isn't exactly jumping with joy. The months pass fairly quickly and Lana's pregnancy isn't too much a focal point though it is enough, as I said, to put any teenager off wanting to have a baby. The most impact of the entire book comes after Lana has had her little girl and Dyan Sheldon is able to ram home the message that looking after a baby really isn't as fun as it may sound.

I admit I found myself cringing as Lana struggles to deal with her little girl. I could see how hard it was and I found myself also getting annoyed at Lana at times because when she moaned about not being able to go out with friends and things I just thought she was being utterly selfish. Having to deal with a screaming baby was what she had signed up for and for her not to know how it was really going to be was rather naive. The fact that she also refused her mother's help - calling her all names under the sun in the process - made it all the worse. I struggled to truly see why Lana and her mother didn't get on and I thought Lana acted petulantly whenever her mother came up in the book (which was regularly and not without the names - Wicked Witch being a firm favourite). I did like Lana though, even though I wanted to grab her by the shoulders and give her a good shake for being so naive and stupid but it's to be expected because she is only 15. No one else really hung around for the entire book, bar Lana's mum who I actually didn't mind. Les, Lana's kinda boyfriend, does pop up from time to time but I never really liked him.

I really enjoyed And Baby Makes Two, it was an incredibly quick read and it only took me around 3 hours to complete the entire book, which makes for a good evening read I must say! There's nothing like being able to start a book one night and finish it before going to bed. It's a testament to Dyan Sheldon's writing that I pretty much read it in one sitting and I'll definitely be on the look out for Dyan's other books! If you're looking for a bit of light reading, this is well worth picking up and, to be honest, every teenager even contemplating having a baby ought to give this a read. It'll put you off for life.

They say don't judge a book by its cover, but when it comes to "And baby makes two" by Dyan Sheldon, how can you do otherwise? I decided to read this book because i simply was intrigued by the cover and the title. I personally love reading novels about common teenage problems, like in this case, teen pregnancy. So as you would expect, i began to read. Fifteen year old Lana Spiggs meets her perfect guy (Les) on her birthday at McDonalds, and after being in a relationship for a couple of weeks, she falls pregnant. Not worried by the fact that she would be throwing her life away, she decides to keep the baby. i found her character the most interesting because of how blinded she was, and strongly believed that Les was going to stick around to have the baby, get married and live in her apartment with her, when he happened to be hiding from her and her baby at his mothers house. She was so driven by this belief she abandoned her family and friends to be with a guy who didn't want anything to do with her. "When i look at it now, I reckon sleeping with Les must have put me i some kind of trance. Like a fairy tale, but in reverse. Instead of the Prince's kiss waking me up, it put me to sleep." I found this quote interesting because it infers that Lana had some idea of what was becoming of her, but funnily enough, she didn't try to stop herself and stay realistic about her life and pregnancy. This book definitely made me think deeper about being too lose with your body and living in the moment, because these are serious issues and have negative life changing consequences. You need to be careful with decisions like these and make sure the time is right before you do anything drastic like getting pregnant. This book is a great reflection of the thousands of girls getting pregnant at an early age, and displays the consequences significantly.

This was a first for me reading Dyan Sheldon and I was not disappointed, interesting book full of the ups and downs and being a teenager, and how sometimes all people want is a baby. Although she learned just how difficult babies can be and in the process lost a lot of things, another book to learn from if you are a teenager and want a baby - It's not the time, enjoy yourself and think about things like that much later in life.
It's a shame not more people pick up this book to learn (although they did leave out big parts of the birth which I think are important to young readers who are even considering having a child).
Still though I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be getting more of the authors books.

Every 15-year old should read this.
The characters are not very likeable. The events are not very likeable. The main character's daydreaming is pretty annoying. I still feel this book painted a bit too rosy picture. After all, not all parents are forgiving and supportive towards teen age pregnancies. I felt that the story was a little too good to be true and that's why it got 3 stars.
Besides that, pretty honest book. I remember feeling shitty during my pregnancies and feeling low after births. The emotions felt real. Not an easy read.

I liked how this book promotes awareness for teenage pregnancies and shows how having a baby isn't as easy as it may seem. I liked how the main character was portrayed as selfish and immature. It added to the effect of the book by being able to see how someone like Lana would see the world. Not the best book I've ever read but it was okay. The book may stress you out if you have a low tolerance for people like the main character though.

That was terrible. Seriously terrible. Lana is such an idiotic brat that it hurts to even read her train of thinking. God. No wonder no one wanted to buy this god-awful book. This book is basically one of those books that should burn in the fiery pits of hell and never see the light of day ever again.

Awalnya cuma mau kasih 3 bintang, soalnya tipe ceritanya ringan dan bikin ketawa-ketiwi.
So, Lana ini tipe anak SMA British yang anti mainstream. Kalo anak remaja lain ngabisin masa SMA dengan belajar, pesta, senang-senang, Lana Malah berencana mau punya bayi dan jadi dewasa dengan being a mom.
And you know what? Penyebabnya karena kebanyakan NONTON TV! (Buku tahun 2005, internet n ponsel blm tenar)
Paling lucu waktu Lana hamil :)
But, penulis mengeksekusi ceritanya dengan apik.

I have this sneaking suspicion that this was written in part as a warning to teenage girls—don't have unprotected sex, kids, or you might end up pregnant and wildly ignorant (of just about everything) and with an utterly deadbeat baby daddy! It doesn't really work on me, because 1) I'm far too old to ever be a teenage parent, and 2) I'm more appalled by Lana than by the situation she finds herself in. If anything, it makes me hope to never parent a Lana.

Lana is pretty willfully ignorant a lot of the time. I'm torn on the ending: on the one hand, I'm glad that things don't get magically (and, more to the point, unrealistically) better for her. Classic YA would have been for Lana to realise the error of her ways, go back to school and get a job, meet a nice stable guy who's willing to be a part-time parent, make up with her mother...etc., etc., etc. Instead, if anything, it looks like things are going to get harder for Lana: less support, more responsibility. On the other hand, I don't think she actually learns anything. By the end of the book she's still spending all her spare money on clothing; still convinced that her own mother is an 'old bag'; still, I think, convinced that with a boyfriend/husband she'll be happy. (And nobody ever seems to notice or be bothered by the fact that, when she and her original dirtbag boyfriend start sleeping together, he's 20 and she's 15. Guys. That's statutory rape.)

Points for not wrapping things up easily, but...it would have been nice to see Lana learn something from the experience.

Dyan Sheldon does it again! Another fantastic book from a fantastic author, and this time it was a story that for many young people is a reality.

Contains spoilers!

It's about a teenage girl who dreams of having a family and growing up. But when she gets her wish, it's not all sunshine and roses. A lot of what Lana thinks isn't real, such as the fact that the father of baby Shinola doesn't care about her as much as she thought he did (if at all).

The ending is a little shocking (though you could sort of see it coming a little - the girl was reaching the end of her tether) but it almost felt like a lesson - as in this is what life is like with a baby you thought you wanted but didn't. The reader is left fully aware that Lana realises how wasted her life is now, and how alone she is (her friends have moved on and she pushed her family away). It ended on quite a sad note.

Nevertheless, it was well written and exciting.

Well, it's entertaining after all :)

And Baby Makes Two talks about a teenage girl called Lana and all the troubles she goes through as she gets older. Lana is sick from everyone telling her what to do; she just wants to become an adult so that she can have her freedom. Her life's ambition is to get married, have her own flat, and a lot of children. Dealing with her mother, teachers, and peers was already hard as it was, but Lana later meets a guy named Les. She then gets pregnant and that changes her whole life and turns it upside down. I like Dyan Sheldon's books and in this one in particular I really like the protagonists voice. The book has an okay plot, but overall as a story it wasn't that good, yet it did take me out of my reading slump. The ending was a shock because I didn't expect what happened. Not all ending have to be happy, do they?

SPOILER ALERT!!!!

Lana is a mess, she really is. I don't know how and why did she thought that having a baby at 15 will give her her freedom that she wants. She is also delousional and so in love with Les eventhough when she told him that she si pregnant he even ask if its him. He is not even there when she gave birth. I am really hating him so much.

when the baby arrived Lana's mother helps her for a week and she still rants about her mother when she tells her what to do with the baby. Lana starts to feel left out when her friends visit her less and less because the baby always cries when they are there. When Lana's best friend asks if Les visited him already she lied to her and told her he did visit but not often because he is busy with work. Lies Lies and more Lies is happening around her world. I will stop now because this is becoming a rant rather than a review.

Lana craves being a mum and at only fifteen is determined to get her future going now starting with finding a boyfriend and later the dream baby, house and marriage.

All when she meets twenty year old Les, she is smitten though he soon falls out of her life leaving her confused...

But once her surprise baby is born she soon realises that life is hard with a baby as she struggles to cope and nearly makes a heartbreaking decision as well as missing her friends and her old life.

All about the toughness of being a young single parent and life not being what you desired for this book was hard hitting and truthful as she grows distant from friends and grows up suddenly for her age now being a parent, a must read.

ceritanya bout, the girl who are falling in love, and devoted all to the boy,and the boy was cheating on her...
ga bisa maen2 lagi, yeah, another teen stuff just stop coz of the baby...

yang paling lucu, gw pikir pas dia ngasih nama anaknya, dengan SHINOLA,,,padahal, in US shinola is shoe polis,,dia tau that fact dari temennya, yang punya temen di US..

hehehehe

Wah sdh lama gak bca teenlit..
And Baby Makes Two..cerita ttg seorang siswa sekolah yg belajar menjadi Ibu (mendadak, ceritanya hamil by accident gtu, biasa remaja :'(

Dan, jadinya di umurnya yg masih sgt muda, Lana, merasa hidupnya mulai berubah.. betapa cape dan penatnya mengurus bayi, mengganti popok, menyiapkan susunya, mendengar tangisnya tiap tgah mlm, blum lagi Ibunya yg ngomel terus-terusan mengkritik Lana salah mengurus bayinya. (dingin2 hujan deras, lana nekat mrmbawa bayinya keluar utk bertemu ayahnya)

Awalnya, Lana berpikir, oh mungkin inilah masa kehidupanku dewasaku sdh dimulai, namun akhirnya Ia menyadari, bahwa kehidupaan dan mimpi-mimpi mudanya telah berlalu

The concept of this story Is fantastic, awareness of teenage pregnancy! Which is done really well especially towards the end which shows the difficulty and the suffering.
However all though the plot was so promising I found the story line was a little weak and has the common naive character that Dylan Sheldon usually has, which I personally do not like but many may like her.
The beguiling of the book was really strong and promising and the descriptions was fantastic but the plot weakened from them out. I did however like how realistic this was and how the characters thoughts got less as she got more stressed. <3

I loved this book. The characters were amazing and I loved every single one. Lana and Les' relationship is great. I loved their excitement. Les did get a little bit annoying because he didn’t take responsibility for his own actions. I went into this book thinking that Lana was going to be this horrible cow who doesn’t love her baby. The writing was a little bland but easy to read. Some of the story line was a bit slow and did go on a bit. I would recommend this book if you like to try and understand teenage pregnancies. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

I was able to read this book in a couple hours as I was so interested in the story and how it would all turn out for Lana. I know some people weren't keen on Lana because of her personality but I think Sheldon was trying to show how stressful it can be to have a baby.

DNF at 83%.
I tried to stick it out through the entire book and I almost made it... I really did!
But as the pages went by, it was just becoming too painful to read.
I've never categorized a book as DNF before, but it seems there's always a time to start (this one being mine).
The book started out at least semi-enjoyable, but I can't say I ever really got into it enough to enjoy myself like I usually do.
Give it a try, though. Maybe you'll find it a good read. Possibly.

I got really frustrated with Lana's character from the very start which made me lose some interest into reading it further, but I still tried. After finishing this book, I realized that Sheldon made her like this to clearly send us a message that there are teenagers who thinks like Lana nowadays. Teenagers who wanted to be all grown up and independent without thinking of the consequences. Life is not easy, don't rush yourself to be an adult.
