Each of the three novellas in this collection ( Hearse in Snow , Red Waves and Exposure ) is taut with tragedy, tradition and caring. The victories of the people within are those of native people everywhere.
I came across the first story in this trilogy of stories about three pairs of First Nations brothers, "Hearse In Snow", in an anthology of Canadian Aboriginal authors and liked it so much I had my wife track down anything she could find by this author. The other two stories are just as moving and well-written. I know little of this author outside what he has bequeathed here, but that is a lot, and I recommend his work and commend him for his clarity and compassion. These are powerful works of artful storytelling.
Three short stories that are about the relationships between brothers but so much more - contemporary First Nations lives, on and off the reserves; the effects of the Residential Schools; First nations activism; First Nations language, traditions and spirituality; relationships between men and women, parents and children and so much more - a thoughtful and provocative read!
