Bill Willingham

In the late 1970s to early 1980s he drew fantasy ink pictures for the Dungeons & Dragons Basic and Expert game rulebooks. He first gained attention for his 1980s comic book series Elementals published by Comico, which he both wrote and drew. However, for reasons unknown, the series had trouble maintaining an original schedule, and Willingham's position in the industry remained spotty for many years. He contributed stories to Green Lantern and started his own independent, black-and-white comics series Coventry which lasted only 3 issues. He also produced the pornographic series Ironwood for Eros Comix.

In the late 1990s Willingham reestablished himself as a prolific writer. He produced the 13-issue Pantheon for Lone Star Press and wrote a pair of short novels about the modern adventures of the hero Beowulf, published by the writer's collective, Clockwork Storybook, of which Willingham was a founding member. In the early 2000s he began writing extensively for DC Comics, including the limited series Proposition Player, a pair of limited series about the Greek witch Thessaly from The Sandman, and most notably the popular series Fables

In which we have an adventure with Jack of Hearts, and adventure with Jack Frost; and get some insight into the origin of Lumi, The Snow Queen. The Mundy (human) world, in which this series is primarily set, albeit interesting, is simply not as captivating as the Fables' realities; like the one in which Jack Frost meets Lumi! I actually feel you could leave this volume out and be none the worse for wear for 'getting' Fables. 7.5 out of 12.

We learn about Jack's time as Jack Frost while he hides out from the librarians. Jack heads to Vegas with his trusty sidekick Gary who can anthropomorphize any inanimate object. Jack faces off against Lady Luck because Vegas ain't big enough for the both of them.

Jack's snarky, break-the-fourth-wall messages at the end of each issue were honestly such blessings.

Next: Sure, my new wife is dead, but she'd want me to quickly put tragedy behind me and find a way to go on. No, seriously. She even said that once in a scene we didn't have room to show you. What's that? I'm a lying sack of what? No, I swear, lots of scenes have to be cut from these stories all the time, strictly for space considerations, but she really did say it. I promise we'll include that scene when these issues get collected... If I can find it.

Next: I do so many heroic things in the next issue that it's impossible to me to fit it all into this tiny caption. So instead, just look at my hair for a minute. Seriously. Isn't it glorious? Can you believe it just comes out of my head like that? How can one man have so many things going for him at once? It just boggles the mind, don't it?

Overall, this volume of Jack of Fables was slightly better than the first one but still not crazy fantastic.

Actually, I really liked the snow queen story line because her transformation from nice to evil makes so much sense now that Jack is in the picture. Of course he would screw everyone over just for kicks.

The rich bride in LA plot was okay. Not great but also not terrible. It didn't completely make sense at times, and it just kinda put Jack right back where he started at the beginning of the volume. Yes, I get that that's the punch line, but after a few times, it gets old. Real fast.

I still prefer the original Fables series over this spin-off series. 3.5

Jack of Fables is one of the funnier characters from Fables. I've enjoyed following him in his own series. In volume two, Jack decides to go to Las Vegas. Along the way, Jack being Jack, meets a beautiful woman and gets married. It is Vegas after all. Yet, all is not well.

The woman he has married is very wealthy, but her family has issues. Jack comes into a fortune, as well as a casino. But, it seems his perfet life is about to be ruined by Belgians. Yes, Belgians. Now, these Belgians work for Lady Luck. Lady Luck has been trying to flee the librarians of the revisionists for awhile and has managed to shack up in Vegas. Quite apropos.

Jack, however, has come into conflict with Lady Luck. This leads to a rather bizzare conflict. More than that I shall not spoil. But suffice to say this issue has it all- sex, violence, two dorks with a golden horseshoe and even the eating of brains. Intrigued yet?

Well if you like humor, Jack of Fables and some bizzarre topics, all backed up with the very good art this series is known for-then you will enjoy Vol 2 of Jack of Fables. While this series lacks the epic events, and even gravitas, of the original series it is not about all that. This is a series about Jack of Fables and his adventures. Gravitas has now left the building.

A fun and entertaining read. Count me in for vol 3.

Now that Fables is in the 'Public Domain', I thought it was time I read the entire series (including all spinoffs and specials) from start to finish in sequential tpb reading order. Here we go!

Fables First-to-Finale reading #8
Jack of Fables vol 02: Jack of Hearts

So Jack pulls a snow job on the Ice Queen.  How cold of him. Puns aside, we see Jack bed and betray yet another woman. It's actually getting a bit old. Let's move on.

So Viva Las Vegas and yet another hapless female in bed with Jack. At least Gary from the last book shows up to entertain the rest of us. And Mister Revise and the Library are back again. Jacks misfortunes add up quickly. This volume is a step down from the first. It's time to hit the road again.

A pretty fun volume although this series is in general turning out to be not quite as good as I remembered. Really liked the Jack Frost stuff though and wish there had been more of a balance between that and the Vegas arc. Also wish the art was a little bit better [the art for the Jack Frost issues is much more my preference than the regular artist for the series] but I guess this is pretty standard late 2000s comic art and it could be a whole lot worse in any case.

Jack continues to be incredibly unlikable except this time there are less interesting characters to distract me.

The first third of this volume was by far the best part. Jack is re-telling the story of how be became Jack Frost for a short while and it has everything to do with the Snow Queen. Personally I have been fascinated by the Snow Queen since I was a child so any story with her is a win for me. (Check out the 1957 film, it is awesome!)

Unfortunately, her personality isn't really explored or expanded, but I am hoping to see more of her later.

The rest of the volume is about Jack winning big and losing it all in Las Vegas. He is selfish and treats women like crap, so basically more of the same. The only real redeeming quality is the Pathetic Fallacy, Gary, who has very interesting abilities and is a much more likable character.

Overall, this is a decent volume but after 2 Jack of Fables in a row I'm ready to get back to the main Fables story line.

Reprints Jack of Fables #6-11 (February 2007-July 2007). Jack and his friends have escaped from Golden Boughs and are on the run…and it’s time for Jack to tell a tale of how he for a short period became Jack Frost at the hands of the Snow Queen. Then Jack and the Pathetic Fallacy are headed to Vegas where Jack finds love only to lose it…but fortunately a big payout helps soften the pain…unfortunately, it also draws the attention of Lady Luck.

Written by Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges, Jack of Fables 2: Jack of Hearts follows the events of Jack of Fables 1: The (Nearly) Great Escape. The collection is split into two parts “Jack Frost” (Jack of Fables #6-7) and “Jack of Hearts” (Jack of Fables #8-11). The DC/Vertigo is a spin-off of Fables and features art by Tony Akins, Steve Leialoha, and Andrew Pepoy.

I enjoy Jack of Fables but like many do not enjoy it as much as Fables. The series at this point is still trying to find its feet and separate itself from Fables. It is also interesting to note that the “back-up” story of Jack’s encounter with the Snow Queen actually becomes probably the most important story in the series since the events in this story shape much of the end of the series.

Jack of Fables has an interesting writing style. Unlike Fables which does have a lot of humor, Jack of Fables is almost a comic adventure…It is much funnier than the regular Fables series and often has littler interludes which are primarily funny based. An example in this volume would be interjections by Mr. Revise and Priscilla Page during the Snow Queen stories (later in the series Paul Bunyon’s ox Babe provides the humor).

Jack is a fun character though. He’s the definition of a “lovable rogue”. I particularly like his portrayal in “Jack of Hearts” where he is actually revealed to have feelings for his quick hitch wife by wanting revenge…but money still trumps love.

The art for the series also is strong. I do prefer Steve Leialoha’s art for Jack Frost more than I do the “Jack of Fables” art, but it is mostly because I like the character designs for the story. A new Jack Frost returns much later in the series.

Jack of Fables is a series worth following if you read Fables. As a stand-alone series it is enjoyable, but it mostly is enriched by the original series. Just like Fables, much of the fun of the series is a result of the classic fairy tale figures that stop by. Jack of Fables 2: Jack of Hearts was followed by Jack of Hearts 3: The Bad Prince.

The Bill Willingham Fables Universe (BWFU) is alive and kicking after two decades of the first book published in 2002 and this is the second book in the series spinoff which started in 2007.
This Fables series spin-off featuring Jack the free spirited, charlatan and cunning trickster of the fables, who has featured in several adventures with Jill, the Beanstalk, Giant-killer, Jack Frost, etc.

This starts off as a weak link in the series featuring a glimpse into his past and his relationship with the Snow Queen which got him the powers of Frost. The story arc presents another glimpse into the trickster that is Jack and how he slowly worms his way into the lives of Lumi, the summer goddess and her sister the snow Queen.

Having escaped the village in the last story Jack with his sidekick Gary, a fable who can locomote and breathe life into anything inanimate and mechanic. This brings a new dimension into Jack's tricky creativity after having escaped the village and stone broke, he decides to head out to Las Vegas with Gary to clean out the casino's. He has a face-off with Lady Luck and meets a love of his life, one who is endowed with moolah and with whom he gets promptly married. That Las Vegas is funded by dark people with powerful fiends is beneath his knowledge and who can make it unhappily ever after for him.
Jack has face-offs and escapes yet again.

The story is filled with a lot of muck and there are some gory scenes including murder and cannibalism of sorts.

Nice story.
Checking up the next one now.
Cheers to entertainment.

While I like Fables, I'm still not sure about Jack of Fables as a spinoff. This one has essentially two arcs, one where Jack seduces the Queen of Winter and becomes Jack Frost, wreaking plenty of havoc, and one where Jack gets involved in a fabletastic Vegas wedding.

Okay.

I don't know. It might be the character, it might be the situations, it might just be that I've got enough Fables in my life, it might be that other comics just grab me better right now, I'm not sure.

As a limited series and being alongside a series I do enjoy a lot, I'll give this a longer rope than most. That doesn't mean I don't want something to happen that's more interesting, and quickly.

This is a good series, but I still don't like it as much as the main Fables book, probably because of the lack of supporting characters for one thing. This volume shows how Jack was once Jack Frost and also shows a trip to Vegas where Jack runs into the real "Lady Luck." He's also still dodging those vans from the weird Golden Bough place that keeps trying to catch the Fables.

While more enjoyable than the last arc, this one doesn't do much more than entertain. Not sure if I would purchase this series--unlike Fables--but I will continue to track down as many of these as the libraries around me have to offer.

More entertaining that I expected, the graphic novel format really suits this character. We'll see how well his not-all-that-lovable-of-a-rake personality holds up over quite a long series, but I'm on board for now.

More Jack shenanigans this time with a nice story of Jack Frost but honestly if you've not enjoyed arc one you would not enjoy this one. More of the same.

And now, a quick jaunt to Jack of Fables, Vol. 2: Jack of Hearts. More or less in publishing order, but not directly related. Mostly it's a way to get another few on the world.

And oh what a weird view it is. Jack is a powerful individual and he knows it, but he's also aboslutely terrible at making any good on that, always jumping from one hairbrained scheme to another. In Jack of Fables, Vol. 1: The (Nearly) Great Escape, he was captured by a power that I'm still curious to see more about, now he's on the run. But half of the story is about that time that he was also Jack Frost (and a royal ass about it then too).

It's a fun little story. Quite a bit lighter than the mainline, but it has it's place. I'm curious if/when Jack will come back or if/how the baddies from here will come into contact with either Fabletown or the Adversary. We shall have to see.

A few quick (spoilery) scenes:

Jack-of-Fables-2-1-Jack-Frost

And that's how he became Jack Frost. By sleeping with, knocking up, and turning evil the Snow Queen. Who is now on the Adversary's side and it's all his fault. Because of course.

Jack-of-Fables-2-2-Noelle

... Gary is really really weird. But it works. And this isn't the only time Noelle shows up, no sir.

Jack-of-Fables-2-3-Lady-Luck

Lady Luck being a brain sucking vampire of sorts? Sure. It works.

Jack-of-Fables-2-4-Feeling-lucky-punk

The Badass Librarian Sisters. QUite the villains. They do a lot to make this series really.

I liked the story better than the one in Volume 1, but I still dislike Jack. No, more correctly, I despise Jack. There is nothing about him to like, and as a plot point it gets annoying that everyone seems to like him, no matter how horribly he behaves. People DIE as a result of him being selfish, annoying and horrific, and he doesn't care, because he's a Fable, so he gets to be better than mere humans. Sorry, but what Jack story does his personality come from? I can't think of any. Jack is a trickster, a thief or a clown in many folktales, but rarely evil. He can even be mean and selfish, but evil just isn't his thing, and this Jack really is evil, a lot of the time. It's hard not to root for the "worse" bad guys to catch up with him.
The story was clever and interesting. I just wish Jack was. I don't know if I will continue reading the series.

This second entry in the JACK OF FABLES series was fun.

We learn the story of how he became Jack Frost (and a bit more about Lumi, the Snow Queen from the Fables series) and get a diverting and longer story about Ms. Lady Luck herself. All the while we're spending more time with Gary (Kenneth? Lance?) the Pathetic Fallacy. This series isn't quite as well-developed as Fables, but it is early days yet, and Jack is still the entertaining and ridiculous protagonist that I wanted him to be.

Not really a big fan of Jack but the stuff he gets himself involved with are kind of ridiculous and I do feel that this series was just made for all of the ideas that were to silly to put in the main series. But I am kind of wondering what they are going to do with the vampires they introduced in this volume.

Whacked out non-stop hijinks. Just one thing after another, like a Final Destination movie. The fable Jack crossed path with in this volume had a fairly interesting ability.
It's a good thing that the Fables reading guide I'm following suggested that I alternate between the Jack spin off and the original series as too much Jack can be a little boring.

More of the same. This would love to be a Sandman-esque look at stories and the power of storytelling, but it's mostly misogynist tripe. Perhaps Jack is meant to be the butt of the humour, but the book does a pretty good job of making him the source of it. Cheeky chappie, knocking up women while chasing their sisters. What larks. Ugh.

The fable books are such a clever and dark example of graphic novels at their best.
It’s a very clever and very dark take on the fables of old set in a modern age.
I discovered his books through because of the excellent wolf amongst us and I love his style of writing , clever and dark with moments of light.
I will definitely go out of my way to finish his other works

The first volume had that same Fables flare, but this one leans more heavily into Jack’s annoying creep vibe. It relies heavily on slapstick and sex jokes, and the storytelling suffers for it. In Fables Jack is a lovable scamp more or less, but in this volume he’s significantly less likable.

Jack of Hearts is my least favorite story in all of fables. It gets two starts instead of one because I kinda like the first two issues about Jack Frost. The actual main story I don't like and its not really memorable. Its about jack doing... I don't know. Overall 4/10

Jack tells the story of how he becomes Jack Frost and has a run-in with Lady Luck. It’s more of the same of the last couple and it didn’t hook me nearly as well as the Hollywood mogul story like did.

Book 23/101 for 2024. Boy, Jack is really unlikeable, isn't he? This feels like a relic from a different time, when a**-hole antiheroes were all the rage. But protagonist personality aside, this was a pretty good romp, and no cause for me to regret my completism about the whole Fables-verse.

OK. Jack's an ass.
Jack Frost is more stupid Jack shenannigans. Nothing new.
Then he gets married.
Probably the best part are the interruptions from the Literals.
So... ok I guess?
Hope it really connects to the Fables.
