A lively illustrated masterpiece, this is the gripping story of a natural disaster and the 13-year-old Kingston boy who lives to tell the tale. While holed up in their home, Joe Brown, his sister Mary, and their parents wait for the eye of the hurricane to pass over their home. Outside, a terrifying wind turns trees to splinters, darkness swallows the land, and torrential rains lash the roof. Celebrating Jamaica’s resilience in the face of natural disasters, this account follows the family as they huddle, worry, wait, and hope—together.
A quick story about a boy and his family in Kingston during a Hurricane. It did purport the sense of place fairly well (I had no idea Jamaica historically had a ‘Wild West’ kind of vibe to it?), and the characters were interesting, but the story just lacked a bit of depth. I felt like Joe and his family were a bit too nonchalant (even after part of their house was ripped off by the wind…)
"Hurricane" is the best book of the trilogy of natural cataclysms. I bought this book, along with "Drought" and "Earthquake" a year ago, and decided to read "Hurricane" first". I didn't think it was that good back then, although I suspected the reason for it was that I wasn't in the right set of mind. This month, I decided to read "Earthquake" and I really liked it. Then, I moved on to "Drought", which I also enjoyed. So I decided to give "Hurricane" a second chance, and I am glad I did.
It was an action-packed novella about what it is like to go through a hurricane. Unlike "Earthquake" and "Drought", there are no sub-plots; the story of "Hurricane" runs straightforward. From the early winds and news about the hurricane, the eye of the hurricane and its aftermath, Andrew Salkey keeps you in suspense with Joe Brown, his sister Mary and their parents and their ordeal through the hurricane. I highly recommend these three children's books about natural cataclysms.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book with its story of a Jamaican family living out the fear of a major hurricane in the dark of night. Very believable family relationships and exciting story
