"Better Training for Distance Runners" makes available to athletes and coaches the same training and racing programs that have produced many national championship, Olympic medal, and world record performances. 180 illustrations.
This is a super scientific book, but Sebastian Coe trained his son and former Olympian champion Peter Coe after all, so his science and experience are like none other. My favorite moment was meeting Marcus O’Sullivan (pictured on the front cover) in person as the coach of Villanova’s track team, and when he asked about my philosophy on training, I cited this book. He turned to his shelf and held it next to his face and said “Does that guy look familiar?”
Lots of awesome information in here and definitely one I’ll come back to multiple times throughout my career. A lot of unnecessary jargon and the example times always being an Olympian is a little frustrating. Some outdated training ideas and science as well.
Like any great coaching book, gotta sift through the BS to get to the good stuff that applies to my current situation.
This is THE comprehensive book for the specialist interested in the Coe and Martin training systems. If you are a coach or athlete with a basic human anatomy and physiology background you would be a fool to not have this in your collection.
A bit dated but excellent foundation on running specific physiology and training, from about as deep and wide as you can go. Would recommend for those looking to build on the Daniels, Lydiard, Pfitzingers, especially for an 800m-10k range.
