After having watched the anime two times, I've finally gotten around to reading the manga! I must say, I liked the manga better than the anime and I liked the manga ending way better too!! Not as good as Deadman Wonderland, but still highly enjoyable!
Wow, it has been a while I have given 1 star. But it is what this volume gets. Now I have a perfect reason to write my review of how bad this manga was: 1. Let's begin with the plot. Which begins really simple, and then gets messy and stupid. I haven't read a lot of manga, but I already know this is one of the worsts. The idea was great at first: diaries that predict future! I got my hopes and expectations high, believing one of a hell psychologically and mind-bending great adventure it would be. I was wrong. There were more than a future diaries: there was actually a "god" who can DIE and need to have a successor. Well, it goes against my believes about "gods" in general. Gods shouldn't die and if he can, he shouldn't need a human being for his throne. Maybe a chosen one, but all the diary owners were stupids who can't turn the world into a better place. ALSO, gods shouldn't choose successors in a killing game. Then this "god" is a horrible one. Additionally, this also gets boring, repetitive. All around there were plot holes! I can't even count them.
2. Characters that I don't care about. This happened for the first time in manga that I was shocked:I didn't connect to the characters! They get stupid and cliche backgrounds, tragic pasts with abuses and rapes which became disgusting. I didn't shed a tear when they all died. The only noticeable ones were Yuno, Yukiteru and Minene, Akise which again, despite being noticeable among others, were unsympathetic ones. Yuno were a great psycho killer, I admit. She was a driving force to this story. Minene was a terrorist who then given tragic childhood, some good sides to, but still I can't connect. Akise was a great detective with actual ambition, which I liked. Yukiteru, the main character was boring to read about. I don't even care about him being a crybaby, pathetic and without ambition. He is 14 years old still. However, if you are gonna write a story, make the main character with AMBITION, with something to do. And one thing more, I don't like killer characaters. Yes, it is a survival game, but killing civilians, innocents, killing themso EASILY made me hate them even more.
3. The art: okay, the art was average. I am not talking about drawing here. I am talking about fanservice. There were nude characters, sex scene between 14 YEAR OLD KIDS! And a MOTHER who is content with it. What? Also romance between Yukki and Yuno was too early! I didn't feel the subtle sweetness of child romance. Not working...
But why I read it till the end? Not because I am a masochist. Because, I wondered about Yuno's identity all along. She was a mad murderer and I wondered what made her like this. She got some crazy plot twists too, which was plus.
So, I round up the stars I gave to other volumes and this manga got 3.3 stars . I adress to people who wants to read this: save yourselves!
I debated between giving this 2 or 3 stars, and would lean more toward 2.5. There were a couple of things I really liked about it, but many more things I really didn't like about it.
High schooler Yukiteru Amano is a socially awkward loner who considers himself a bystander. He'd rather mind his own business instead of getting involved with other people, writing every mundane activity of his life in a cellphone diary. Secretly tormented by his solitude, he invents an imagery friend called Deus Ex Machina who claims to be the Lord of Time & Space. Taking pity on the lonesome Yuki, Deus grants his diary the ability to record future events. After learning that 11 other people with unique future diaries show up around Japan, Yuki learns that Deus is not a product of his imagination, and he has been selected to take part in a death game that involves fighting to become the next ruler of causality by outsmarting each other with their new prophetic devices. Luckily for Yuki, one of the death game's participants is his fellow classmate Yuno Gasai, the prettiest girl in his school who happens to love him so much that she would put her life on the line to protect him.
Speaking of Yuno, she's where most of the fun comes from. She's a severely unstable, possessive sociopath that will happily slaughter anyone and anything that get in the way of her selfish romantic fantasies. She's famous for inventing the infamous yandere trope (psycho/killer/stalker love interest) While she can technically be seen as the villain of the series and it's hard to fully sympathize with her because of how violent, impulsive and controlling she is, all of the other characters are so unlikable and bland that I often found myself rooting for her to just rip everyone else in the story to shreds.
Yuki is the main character, but he's such a whiny and idiotic pushover that I couldn't connect with the unhealthy relationship brewing between him and Yuno. I understand it's supposed to be a psychological thriller, but the story seemed to romanticize their relationship rather than portraying it for what it really was: predatory, abusive and horribly toxic. I would've rather had Yuno as the main protagonist and explore her tragic and demented backstory through much more intriguing characters to bounce off of rather than through a relationship with one of the lamest dudes in manga history.
The plot jumps around way too fast. None of the competitors have interesting personalities or motives so I didn't really feel any stakes or tension in the action. The only side character I somewhat liked is (funnily enough) another batshit crazy girl who plays the role of a cosplaying terrorist named Uryuu Minene. The dialogue could get really bad as the characters never reacted to death, betrayal or horrifying situations realistically. There's a point where a character discovers three dead bodies in his girlfriend's house, runs away in fear, then casually remains her partner for the rest of the series like nothing ever happened. There are many more scenes exactly like this where characters don't react and process things in remotely realistic or believable ways.
Some of the twists in the later parts of the series involving time and causality were admittedly cool, but they're introduced in a rushed and convoluted way which makes it feel messy overall. The action was good, there were a few emotional moments and the absolute chaotic nature of Yuno and Uryuu were exciting to watch unfold, but everything else about the characters, story and conflict of the narrative fall apart at the seams.
Ok, lemme just tell ya. Was this series good? No xD Was it somewhat pleasant to read? Yeah, kinda. I'm sure I'd love it if I had a chance to read it earlier than I did, but as I have developed brain and some critical thinking, I had to turn it off. Specifics downwards, spoilers. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . WHY IS EVERY STORY THEMED 'KILL THE REST, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE' ALWAYS CONTAINS THE TIMELINES PLOTTWIST. WHY???????????? There was only one series so far that didn't have this kind of plottwist even though it did give lots of red herrings hinting at the different timelines or universes, but it wasn't a good series either. W h y???
Well, I did almost cry at this book, but I'm very strongly emotional.
There were way too many plotholes that I could easily pinpoint and whine over, but as I'm writing this I'm realising I'm not really having the time to do that. Be it because there were too many or be it because I really appreciate my time. I'm sure there are others who have pinpointed them already. I'm just going to say that I question how their future diaries work at all. If owners were to really think, all this series would be just people standing around, looking at their phones, wondering what to do/talking with people. That moment when Yukki got the PIN code to open the safe to 11th guy? That should be the whole series. :I Thank you and bye, I'm off to better series, hopefully...
EDIT: ok, just so it doesn't look like I'm just thinking trash about it... As much as I hate that it was another timeline story, I think it actually made more sense here than in the others? Let me just tell you that it made me 'understand' Yuno more. I remember I watched a famous anime series about some magical girls and the plottwist there didn't make me like the traveler from that series any more or less. I really actually like the 'you can't ressurect the dead' plottwist and the way Yukki got tricked, as well as just simply his denial. It makes for a perfect story. Is killing alright because you're aiming to get *Magical*Powers* and ressurect everyone? What if you've been lied to and you can't? What if you fail?... this motive alone is great, but even that wasn't really fully explored in this manga. They still got to the third world and ~*~Everything was alright. =^.^= ~*~ . I ended up whining again. xD oops. Anyway, enjoy your day.
Hmm. Mirai Nikki had lots of interesting twists and many of them were executed quite well but I don't know what to think about the ending. It felt just messy. Some spoiler-ish thoughts ahead:
I liked that Yuno finally realized some things but I don't think Yuno and Yuki deserved the ending they got. The series was pretty brutal before so I think more bleak ending would've been appropriate. Some of the parts in the end weren't given enough time, like third Yuno's family and Minene and Nishijima (well, and Minene in general). But some of the scenes were composed well, looking and feeling nicely dramatic and showy, for example the stuff on the rooftop (or whatever floor without a ceiling that was...) with second Yuno and third Yuno & her family. I just think too much was crammed into the last volume, lesser scenarios in the earlier volumes were given more time or at least were more evenly paced than this grand finale. It was entertaining but I expected a bit more.
Not sure I love how this completed the series. These last 2 volumes seemed to get progressively more and more convoluted. It almost felt like the author wasn't sure how to end the series & just threw a bunch of things at the wall and was like "maybe if I make this as convoluted and confusing as possible, they'll just go along with it because they have no idea what's going on!" Or perhaps they thought that a "normal" ending wouldn't be a big enough of a bang on the way out. I'm interested to see how this ending is depicted in the anime, though. Because I've found myself enjoying the anime more than the manga because the manga can sometimes be a bit difficult to follow.
Another classic manga series under my belt. I loved the story. It was a real page turner, exciting all the way through. It featured some great characters. Great allies and villains, and mostly grey people, which is always appreciated. I also love the panelling in this manga, for maximum impact. The only thing is that most female faces look alike, so at one point I thought Yuno had dressed up as Yuki's mom, haha. Also the nudity was too much, since they're onky fourteen years old. But despite these flaws, the series still deserves 5 stars in my opinion.

İ started this series when İ was 16, got to Vol.11 & then never finished bc they didn't have Vol.12 at my local book store, and after a while İ forgot about it 😔 Now, almost 10 years later, İ decided to finish this series & realised İ feel differently about many things now than İ did back then. For one, İ actually liked Yunos character now. Unfortunately the last volume felt very rushed & not exactly thought through, making this ending somewhat less fulfilling than İ had hoped.
This manga taught me of what yandere is which basically is Yuno. Though I can't entirely blame her with her obsessive affection to Yukiteru, I still find it wrong what she did in the previous world and to the future world. But then love transcend everything. This is another wonderful manga that will show you the ugliness of a human heart.
I really enjoyed and liked the series overall; however, I couldn’t stand Yuno and Yuki. They’re unrelatable characters and because of them I couldn’t give this series a higher rating.
Mirai Nikki is a huge disappointment. Its messy story and weak characters are simply not fit for the genre it belongs to. The ending doesn’t make sense!
I remembered it being less nonsensical ngl. also why the fuck was Yuno so sexualised and had a full on naked panel. overall, I don't think it's worth the read.
As the game comes to a close, Yukiteru, with the return and help of Ninth, Minene Uryuu, leap across time to save Yuno Gasai's alternate self... from herself! But in the third realm, Yukiteru receives a Dead End, his impending demise to be carried out by none other than the original Yuno Gasai. How will Yukiteru overturn his Dead End and save both alternate Yunos, when the Yuno he loves can only see death, murder, and a clean restart before her eyes?
Well... I'd be lying if I said that ending didn't surprise me. There were so many twists, turns, plot holes, happy endings, change of characters, and conflicted feelings that I don't even know where to start. So, pretty much, Yukiteru did end up getting exactly what he wanted and more. Much more. And as did everyone else get what they had always wanted. However, this was only in the third world, made by two repeated divergences/time leaps made by the previous worlds' God, Yuno Gasai (and the first Muru-muru). But I still don't understand what Muru-muru wanted out of all this. She just wanted to make the game more interesting? That's it? Did I miss something? Oh, whatever. So nobody, not even Third, are dead in the third world. Well, that is, the significant deceased persons from the first and second worlds. Yuno also finally got her happy ending, however, the Yuno Gasai we knew through the entire story ending up killing herself at the end of the game, making Yukiteru the God of the second realm. 10,000 years later, the third Yuno Gasai returns to the empty realm that belongs to the God Yukiteru Amano. She reveals that one of the Muru-murus had kept the original Yuno Gasai's memories and gave them back to her (the third Yuno Gasai), thus melding both the first and third Yuno Gasai into one complete (or maybe a little too jumbled) person. Wouldn't she have some conflicting memories? How would she be able to tell which were hers, which were the real ones, when neither were fake? Ah, and it seems that Nishijima really truly did love Minene Uryuu. Their (re)meeting was almost like that of a fairy tale. Somehow, he could even faintly remember her, even though he should have only been a Nishijima from a completely different realm. However... Considering the fact that Nishijima of the second realm was killed before the third realm was even created, could the second Nishijima's soul have inhabited the third Nishijima's body? So that must mean that Nishijima loved Minene with all of his soul... How precious. And the two even got married and had two little quarter-god babies~. Oh, yes. the second Minene Uryuu is a half-god. I guess that's what Deus was up to... Heh. Yet, she still can't get her right hand back, or even a prosthetic. That makes me quite uncomfortable. Ahh, and the credits on the last three pages or so remind me of the ending to Arina Tanemura's Full Moon wo Sagashite. Haha, I wonder which one of them ended first? Likely Mirai Nikki. But anyway, that was a satisfactory ending. I only wish it were in paperback (the English version). It felt strange finishing the series in such a different format. Oh well. I'm glad that it had a 'Happy End', even though it was the farthest from how I had presumed the ending would be, or was even told.
