There are some books that you can't just put down. Even when you think you're done with them, they peek at you from your TBR pile and call you out. This is one such book. Through age-old tales from cross cultures and countries, the author takes on an endeavour to restore the connection that binds all the women across the globe - to their wild self. All through their lives, many women continue to perform their mundane routines without any vigour, without realising what each task might teach them, how each task might open up the mystical doors to the psyche. This book takes our everyday lives into account, relates them to fairytales and folktales (because who is a better teacher than a story), divides them into different phases and correspondingly explains the importance of every single one of our actions. Published in the 80s, Clarissa Pinkola Estés, in her book writes down one brutal truth after another that is relatable on a whole new other level and holds true even in this era of SoMe where the number of likes determine one's worth. Whilst reading this book, there will come instances where you will undisputedly agree with the author. It would feel like as if she is your alter-ego telling you things you knew all along but kept on suppressing them deep down unconsciously, or perhaps even consciously. But there will also be times when you'll be at odds with the author and I think that exactly is the purpose of this book - to challenge your thought process, to make you question things that've never been questioned, to accept the fact that it is okay to not be a part of a culture that is hell bent on exiling the wild woman. You'll leave this book thinking it to be a dumb philosophical guide, think that you've gone into a reading slump but you'll definitely get back to it because this is not some book that can be finished in one sitting, or one week or even a month. You'll have an on-and-off relationship with it. It might take months to finish this book because it will take patience and all your energy, leave you drained at times even, but it is also the book that will revitalise your soul. It took twenty-some years for the author to complete this book; it'll take at least some months for you to assimilate it in your psyche.
A highly recommended book to all the women out there. You really have to connect and know your inner self and this one will help you with it. Phenomenal read.
