Two hundred and fifty years ago, a mythical figure of Scandinavian folklore was born. The Fossegrim spent decades playing his fiddle in a waterfall, rewarding those who bring gifts with musical abilities. But times change. Today he will cross an ocean to follow Julianna to college. As a freshman in Chapel Hill, she has no idea what she’s in for. And that’s just campus life. A world traveler, Jules is street-smart but the wounds from her mother’s unexpected death fester.

And then it begins. When her powers manifest after her 18th birthday, Nicholas makes contact. He bides his time as desperation brings her closer, slowly revealing her family’s secret piece by piece. To Nick’s dismay, Jules falls in love with ambitious Andrew, a collegiate fencer who is always in the right place at the right time. The distraction interferes with her training as time grows short. On Halloween, Nick pushes Andrew too far and Jules runs from them both. On her own again, has Jules learned enough? For Nick isn’t the only creature who crossed the ocean to follow her…

Tenderfoot chronicles one daughter’s coming of age story as she deals with the revelation of her family’s paranormal secret. It is the first of two paranormal fantasy ebooks in The Tenderfoot Set, with a length of 97,000 words/ 350 pages.

“I like to write. I like to rock.”

BORN IN SEATTLE LONG BEFORE Seattle was cool, Indie Author Amy Tupper moved with her parents to Paris, France for three years in the mid ’80s, where she attended the American School of Paris. While there, she had many adventures, like the time she became separated from her friends after a Bryan Adams concert and spent a couple of interesting hours hanging out with a hooker while her father came to pick her up.

HAVING SURVIVED FRANCE mostly unscathed and highly impressed, Amy returned to the U.S. to complete her studies at an enormous high school in Northern Virginia. It was there, hiding in Creative Writing class, that she wrote her first book. With that done, Amy attended and graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College with a degree in Communications.

AMY NOW LIVES IN MORRISVILLE, NC working as a mid-career telecommunications professional with her husband, a nice man who asks for dinner, and two tween daughters who over accessorize. When not throwing a meal together last minute, writing, or knitting while watching TV, Amy attends as many alternative rock concerts as her babysitters will allow.

From the moment I started reading this book, I couldn’t put it down. It is a Young Adult book that manages to break the mold of paranormal romance, which with the number of them out there right now, is a feat all on its own.
The characters were well developed, an interesting blend of personalities that made for very amusing dialogue. The main character, Julianna, or Jules, is headstrong yet charming and manages to do more than pout and wait for men to rescue her, unlike some other YA heroines. Nick was definitely my favorite, though. Obnoxious, sarcastic and lovable, he is the kind of character that makes you turn the pages.
The story itself, has some really interesting twists that make for a fun read. I loved the mixture of Scandinavian folklore in the story; it infused an aura of the mystic more original than the vampire/werewolf mix we keep seeing ad nauseam.
What I enjoyed the most, however, was the atmosphere the author created. I loved the college campus as the background, it works wonderfully to give the sense that Jules is a bit in seclusion from the rest of the world.
This was definitely a good book, and one that I can highly recommend for teenagers and adults who like a bit of the paranormal in their pages.

Tenderfoot is a powerful mystery diving into the world of supernatural. It has element of surprises and twists which keeps a reader's attention with each turn of the page. It introduces the reader to the world of average teenagers, yet not so average. They have gifts beyond the earthly realm which leads them on the journey to not just begin life as college students but as warriors to protect the unsuspecting humanity of the unknown dark realm. The characters are rich and diverse. There are hidden secrets each one is about to discover that sends them on a path fill with mystery, wonderment and excitement. There is a budding romance in the works, a prince charming that sways a woman's heart and the rogue you want to see suffer until you get further into the story, and he too becomes a knight in shining armor. The adventure and writing style of this author has me looking forward to reading more books from a very imaginary and uplifting writer with the gift to take a reader away and let them dove into the world of the supernatural with a refreshing twist.

This book had me hooked from the first page to the last. The characters and plot were amazing. The young college student discovering her supernatural abilities among dangerous situations keeps the reader's heart racing. The characters are well developed with rare traits of chivalry, trust and loyalty. There is a love story in the mix too. It is powering to emphasized with characters who are there to protect her from the unknown evil forces that crossed her path. Her mentor, lover, and family are like guardian angels and will go to any lengths to protect her. This author has a flair of mixing plot, characters and adventure into an exciting supernatural book which was a joy and a honor to received as a prize in a contest. It was on my reading list since I first discovered it on Smashwords.com. My insight was not wrong, this is a keeper, to be re-read and I look forward to this author's next creation. This is a gem to pass the time with. Put it on your summer reading list, you will not regret it.

I love discovering a new author and Amy Tupper has really impressed me. I really enjoyed Tenderfoot, in fact, I couldn't put it down. I loved the setting of the book and the character development. My only disappointment was that the book ended and now I have to wait for the next installment!

This book really surprised me with how much I liked it. I loved that the setting of the book was just getting to college, where you finally have that freedom from your parents, where anything is possible, and where you really start to figure out who you are.

Jules reserved demeanor didn't endear her to me at the start, but she won me over as she tried to fit in and embrace her new life. Yes, at the start she just went along with Jade and her other friends, but it wasn't too long before she wasn't forcing herself to do so and took the lead in her friendships.

I wasn't sure where the story would lead with Jules' discovery of her new senses. I liked that the info was slowly doled out, so that we learned when Jules did and there wasn't the big info dump.

I loved the romance with Andrew, it was so sweet and innocent. Andrew's sneaky ways to ingratiate himself in her life had me smiling. I also felt very sorry for him various times, he was up against things he didn't know and had no way of fighting. But he did come through when it was important.

Nick is a character that I am not sure I like even knowing everything. He is always there, knows too much, and a master manipulator. It seems like he is looking out for Jules' best interest, but I am not sure, at times it seems like he has his own agenda.

Once character that I didn't expect to like or even see much of was Jules' father. There were some conversations that had me tearing up and made me really like the man. He was able to give Jules some great advice, but from the opposite side of the issue.

My one issue with the story was that it seemed like we were finally getting some answers when the book ended. This just means that I will be waiting for the next book to see what happens!

This book starts off slow but by the end I was somewhat hooked.

Julianna aka Jules is a college freshman who comes to find out she has paranormal senses. For most of the book the story follows Julianna around college campus as she is getting into the grove of being a college student. I almost stopped reading it because I just wasn't interested in reading about the characters going to class or going out to a bar drinking. As the story progresses we start to learn more about Julianna's parents and some of her background. Nick is this hot but creepy guy who knows everything and is there to protect Julianna. At first I wasn't sure about him but as we learned more about what and who he is I started to come around to liking him. Then there is Andrew. He is the star fencer and Julianna's boyfriend. I liked how there relationship progressed. They started out as friends and then became more. There were times when I thought he was a little crazy to be kind of stalking Julianna when they broke up. But it all worked out in the end.

While it has mystery, romance and paranormal I just has a hard time getting into it. It just seemed to take forever, almost to the very end of the book before we really found out what Julianna is and a little about her line. If there is a second book I will probably read it to find out more. This e-book was provided to me by the author for review. This did not affect my review in any way.

Amy Tupper has provided a slightly different coming-of-age story in Tenderfoot. Julianna, or Jules, is starting college when she notices that her sight has changed. She can read the text in a book from across the room. She can also hear through walls and her sense of taste has gone completely wild (she can actually picture the surroundings of an animal when eating meat and diary products). If that wasn't weird enough, she can also "hear" the thoughts of others, okay not everyone but just one person . . . Nicholas "Nick" Grimm. Jules learns that Nick is a troll or faery and basically her protector. He was also her mother's protector and her grandmother's protector. Nick has been protecting the special women in her family for generations.

College is hard enough without throwing all of the faery items into the mix but add some romance and Tenderfoot raises the ante. Jules learns to handle college, even the boring aspects. Jules also must come to grips with her "romance" with Andrew, another freshman and fencer extra ordinaire. Tenderfoot realistically explores the drama and angst of college while adding first love and faery lore into the mix. Jules doesn't weave spells, she can't fly, and she doesn't have superhuman strength. She does have grit and determination and is a likable character.

NOTE: I'd like to be able to give this 2.5 stars because I enjoyed it a little more than simply "it's okay."
