WereWolf #1

Werewolf

Rate this book
Landon Murphy, a werewolf with a knack for tracking, a penchant for killing, and an affinity for the bottle, is thrown for a loop when he meets LillyAnna and Jamie, individuals who will change his life forever. Add to that a serial killer with no discernable pattern, and a threat no one saw coming, and Landon's life reaches a boiling point. Spanning the globe with vampires and other werewolves, Werewolf is a new breed of werewolf fiction.

This was so enjoyable!! I found it more enjoyable than the Twilight Saga as I was drawn in by the story and I found it easy to read. I also found it easy to understand each character and the way they interacted with each other.
There were two stories happening in the book and they seemed separate to me and I found it hard to comprehend at first what was going on, but as I kept reading I began to wonder how the two stories were connected. The way they were brought together made the story more interesting and exciting.
My favourite part of the book was learning more about the werewolf’s and how they came to be the way they are. I also liked how the way the werewolf’s and vampires in this book were friends not enemies. This made the story more interesting. It was great to see the vampires and werewolf’s working together and not against each other.
My favourite character was Landon, who was a main character. He was my favourite as he was mysterious and I liked the fact that he kept his secrets. He lived a simple life that turned out to be a bit more complicated than first expected.

The relationship between Landon, LillyAnna and Jamie stood out for me because of their connection to each other. Landon is the centre of the relationship as he befriended both LillyAnna then Jamie and too them to Germany to train as werewolf’s and to discover their true purpose in their new form. As the story develops so does the relationship. The relationship goes from being friends to LillyAnna falling in love with Landon while a new connection is made between LillyAnna and Jamie, which makes things seem somewhat awkward for them both. Landon’s relationship with Jamie changes in a very unexpected way.
I highly anticipate the next instalment: Werewolf: Ascension as I am looking forward to knowing how LillyAnna’s training goes and how the relationship between Jamie and Landon develops.

So, this book was only .99 and all the proceeds at the time went to the fund for Missing and Exploited Children. I probably would have never picked it up, except it is written by a fellow Louisvillian and a friend of a friend.

I wasn't sure I wanted to read it at first, but I couldn't put it down. I read a lot of "young adult" fiction and quite a bit of the vampire/werewolf genre. I loved that it was set in my hometown and all the references to places I know and love.

It was a page turner and I had to go get the sequel immediately!

This story was fast paced and action packed. I felt like it was a strange mix of vigilantie/x-men/werewolves – if that makes sense. It kept my attention with the new breed of werewolves, but (as I always mention with third person writing) I felt distant from the characters. There was quite a bit of story crammed into this book and I will be looking for the sequel.

Man oh man, I do not know what to say about this one- it might be so bad that it's good, or it might just be so bad it's bad. I finished it weeks ago but haven't been able to articulate my feelings into a review unit (maybe) now.
I like werewolf books, so since this book is called, Werewolf, I assumed I was off to a good start. The book's cover also caught my attention, because it features the Louisville skyline, and further investigation revealed that the book was written by a fellow Louisvillian, and former teacher. The author really wants you to know he is from Louisville because he names the city, or the state, or a Louisville landmark, street, restaurant, or bar on every other page.
The plot, and again, I am not sure if it's terrific or horrific, opens with Landon Murphy, crashing a party at the Galt House, chasing a man into the streets, then turning into a werewolf and killing him.
Before he kills the man, he gets some information about where to find some more people, he then goes to that location and kills everyone there. Only a few pages into the novel we learn that all this men were part of a kidnapping and pedophile ring and Murphy uses his werewolf abilities to vigilante style deal with nasty criminals. Meanwhile, it is established that there is a serial killer roaming around the Midwest (see where this is going?) A few pages later, and many references to Louisville later he is back at his apartment helping to stop a domestic abuser. Long story short, the woman he rescued from abuse is a werewolf too, they meet another werewolf (in town from Cincy) and they all head off to Europe to join a group of werewolves and vampires who have been tracking and hunting bad guys for decades (again- is this awesome or the worst thing ever written- I am really not sure) I won't spoil the second half of this novel because you probably want to read it now. But I will just tell you there is an epic battle, loyalties betrayed, and there are so many twists and turns that I laughed out loud because the device had been used so many times that they had become comical. Again- maybe that's brilliant, I can't decide.

This book had a great idea behind the plot - an organization of crime-fighting werewolves and vampires - and a different approach to the legend of werewolves. Too bad it was wasn't particularly well-written. There were some all-too-convenient stretches in the plot - the biggest one being Jamie having "made" LillyAnna - and the 3 main characters just weren't particularly interesting.

Landon Murphy is a vigilante Werewolf who has been using his natural instincts and ability for tracking, as well as his supernatural instincts for killing to remove the worst of the worst from society. Landon has been a sort of ladies man in the past, but now is a loner.

Landon has found two new werewolves in his area. He wonders how there could be two so new this close, but he endeavors to find and help them. In an effort to teach them about their new powers and their lineage, he takes them to Europe to learn about themselves.

Meanwhile, back in the US, there is a serial killer racking up victims. This killer is traveling all over the US, and the authorities can’t seem to get a fix on an identity. It will take the skill of Landon and his team to track this killer and bring him to justice. In the process, however, Landon will learn more about the new werewolves, and about himself. The secrets he finds will change his life forever.

This book was a very fast read for me. The storyline was never boring. This book was exactly what I like in a supernatural story. It had vampires and werewolves, a little love, a lot of action, and some twists to surprise the reader. I would love to read more about Landon, LillyAnna and Jamie. This was very entertaining, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good supernatural story.

There were things I liked about this story and things I didn’t like. I liked Mr. Hair’s take on werewolves and the different things they could do. I loved the transform-Heal-Transform back while in mid-air. That was awesome. I loved that the group with our main character, Landon, were crime fighters. If you were into moonshining they would probably help you, but if you were into crimes against women and children, well then you were mincemeat.

The things I didn’t like were how Mr. Hair tried to tie all of their stories together with a neat bow. It just seemed like a huge stretch. The twins would have been totally traumatized by the events, but they were like … ‘oh ok, now you can be my daddy’. Also how Jamie was forgiven everything and just handled like a mis-guided teen, don’t worry he will get over it. I will just drive him upstate and show him a grave of someone I didn’t kill and all will be well. The end part for LillyAnna was also bit much. It seemed like something the author just thought up at the end and put it in there.

Overall it was a good read. There was some sex in the story, but it was downplayed and not descriptive. There was plenty of violence.

Werewolf struggles with an identity crisis. Does it want to be a tale of werewolves using their abilities to track down serial killers, does it want to portray a rise in power that threatens the werewolf/vampire hierarchy, or does it want to explore how a new werewolf adapts to the changes in their life? Werewolf tries to do all three, but isn't particularly effective at any. The novel is a mess and feels very scattered. There are plenty of good ideas here, but having a more focused plot would have helped greatly. The other stories could have been told in future novels.
