The Southern Railway system: An illustrated history

Rate this book
Nicely done history of the Southern Railway (US), illustrated with photos reaching back to the early 1800s. The book opens with a detailed description of the many early railroads, such as the South Carolina Canal & Rail Road Company, which eventually became the Tennessee River, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia lines that were amalgamated in 1894 and became the Southern. The book describes the effect on these lines of the Civil War, the rebuilding after the war, the consolidation of the lines and the company's history through 1982 when it merged with the Norfolk & Western. Lavishly illustrated throughout with black and white photos. With decorative end papers showing system map. 160 pages.
