Harper Allen is a Canadian writer of romance novels. She is a four-time nominee for a Career Achievement Award by Romantic Times Book Reviews magazine and her novel Dressed To Slay was named the magazine's choice for Best Silhouette Bombshell of 2006.

Her Irish ancestry lends them a touch of Celtic mysticism, while her work as a reporter in the criminal court system gives her books a darker edge, first and foremost each one is a story about a man and a woman falling in love and holding on to that love. Her characters have always been real people with real flaws, desperately struggling to find the love that will redeem them - and for that Harper need look no further for inspiration than her own life.

Harper grew up in a blue-collar motor city, and with comments such as "Does not play well with others" on her grade-school report cards. Underneath the motorcycle leathers and the rose tattoo, beats the heart of a true romantic. The day she met the man who eventually became her husband, she told her sister, "I've just met the man I'm going to marry. How long do you think it'll take him to figure it out?" They married, and had little kids, who aren't the first ones picked for the volleyball team. Her idea of a great date with her husband is going to a baseball game. Her idea of a great baseball game is any one in which the Red Sox win.

Did not finish. I don't know whether it was the hero's phony Irish brogue, the endless flashbacks to the inevitable "Nun with a heart of gold" or the way the heroine is found hanging in a public restroom in a dive bar. But something about this setting and these characters really rubbed me the wrong way.

Harper Allen kicks off a new miniseries with another amazing read in "Guarding Jane Doe." Soldier-of-fortune Quinn McGuire lived each moment as if it were his last, until he received a letter from a woman who'd once saved his life and Jane Smith walked into his life. Bound by a promise he'd made years ago, he became Jane's protector. Someone was after her, leaving threatening notes and endangering her life--and Jane couldn't remember why. She knew nothing about her past

Allen's best book since "Twice Tempted," "Guarding Jane Doe" is an amazingly emotional and action-packed read that combines all the best elements of Intrigue. In spite of my trepidation to see yet another amnesia plot (the second one this month), this is an author known for thoroughly inventive plotlines, and I wasn't disappointed in this book, another original tale unlike any other.

This is the rare book that manages to combine a good mystery with strong sensuality and the kind of deeply romantic scenes that leave readers sighing. Although Jane initially seems like a disappointingly wimpy heroine, Allen soon reminds us that no one is who they first seem to be in one of her books. Identities are uncovered, secrets are revealed, and everything we think we know is turned on its head several times over. Although I had the misfortune to figure out the ending long before it came (more dumb luck than anything on the writer's part), it didn't ruin my enjoyment of the book, because Allen delivered enough action and intensity before the ending came to keep me wondering if I could be so sure what I thought I knew. Ultimately, I could, but getting there was still a blast.

As with all of her Intrigues, Allen shows a remarkable talent for creating memorable scenes, the kind that will stick with you long after the book is over. There are so many choice moments that make this book unforgettable, both emotional and suspenseful, including a climax that is both. There especially, the hero and heroine show what incredible people they are.

I think it's safe to say this is the best Intrigue I've read this year, and the way this year's been going, I don't expect it to be beat. Whether your first book by this author or your fifth, "Guarding Jane Doe" will keep readers anxiously awaiting the arrival of Book Two, "Sullivan's Last Stand," next month.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the suspense, action, and romance.
The book starts out with McGuire receiving a letter from Sister Bertille that had once saved his life. She states in the letter that he owed her. She wanted him to protect, and guard someone. Sister Berteille said he would know when the right case presented itself. She passed away before she could finish the letter, so he couldn't ask her any questions.

Jane has no memory, but knows she is being stalked. Her stalker leaves her messages in strange places that reads "I know who you are" She meets with McGuire to hire him to protect her. He doesn't want to take the case at first, but feels torn. He knows he owes Sister Berteille.
I loved the way the two worked together to figure out who Jane really was, and eventually found out who was after Jane. The suspense throughout the story was good. I was not able to guess who was after Jane. I love books with action, suspense, and romance. This story had a nice balance of all three. The bonus was the storyline also being great.
