This is a wonderfully sad story. Hans Christian is depicted as a hopeful, energetic person who loves theater and pursues his dreams with determination. Through many trials, including being bullied by other children and a terrible headmaster, unlucky romances, struggles with dyslexia and heartless critics, he perseveres through it all and becomes one of the most loved authors of all time. There is a bibliography in the back, citing the sources used by the author to weave this tale, including his autobiography. I have no cross-checked the information but even if everything in the book were untrue, it is still an amazing tale worth sharing with youngsters.
