He was known among the writing staff as 'The Physicist', due to his original profession, which also allowed him to give a greater degree of scientific accuracy to his literary work.
He was killed in an accident in Florida in 1993, aged 59.

Perry fliegt mit seiner Mannschaft zur Venus und stößt dort auf eine Überraschung: Eine Festung, Relikt einer früheren arkonidischen Expedition.
Vor allem das letzte Drittel des Romans, in dem die Festung beschrieben wird mit den Gängen, die keine Türen aufweisen, ist klaustrophobisch-spannend und wiegt die wenig inspirierten Beschreibungen der Venusfauna und -Flora nebst Riesendinosaurier-Passagen auf.
Dass man nun ausgerechnet auf der Venus auf die uralten Überbleibsel einer früheren arkonidischen Expedition stößt, ist schon ein doller Zufall. Aber was soll´s: dafür ist die Atlantis-Idee recht charmant: auf dem versunkenen Kontinent wollten die Arkoniden also die Erde bevölkern.
Wie so oft wird das, was eigentlich erzählenswert wäre, in zwei Sätzen abgehandelt, und so erfährt der Leser hier nichts weiter über Atlantis. Wenn ich mich recht entsinne, wird der Faden sehr viel später mit Atlan wieder aufgegriffen.
Auch aus diesem Abenteuer geht Perry gestärkt hervor: Er ist nun der neue Kommandant der Festung und verfügt über deren riesige Positronik und tonnenweise Alien-Technik.

Первая четверть резкая, дерзкая, плавно переходящая в прикольно описанное освоение неизвестной планеты. Затем повествование сильно проседает, но удерживает загадкой, ответ к которой находится в самом конце. Хорошая структура с небольшими провисаниями в целом не является проблемой для серии, но может немного раздражать определенных читателей.

The Western Bloc rocket Greyhound is sent to the moon in order to scavenge the Arkonide wreckage for technology that will help rival the 3rd Power. The ship crashes, killing one of its crew. The survivors, Freyt, Derringhouse and Nyssen, detect an alien ship and fire missiles at it. It's the Good Hope carrying Rhodan and crew. Rhodan fends off the attack and, after speaking to Western Bloc leaders, enlists the 3 astronauts.
The Good Hope arrives at Venus and is immediately under attack by an unknown foe. The ship lands safely and a semi-intelligent seal race is found. Rhodan makes contact with the creatures who consider the new arrivals to be gods.
Rhodan, Reg Bell, Anne Sloan and Tako Kakuta set out across the jungle planet to search for the enemy's stronghold. Along the way, they encounter several dangerous forms of Venusian life, from giant worms to dinosaurs.
The group finally finds a cave complex where Tako is captured and submitted to interrogation by the commander of the base. The questioning leads to the Terran party being welcomed by the outpost. The complex is staffed by an army of robots led by the largest robot brain outside of Arkon's central brain.
The base is found to be the remnant of an Arkonide colonization mission. In addition to the Venus Base, there was an Arkonide presence on Earth that was destroyed by cataclysm (which Perry assumes was Atlantis), leaving the base unoccupied for 8000 years. The ruling brain has been waiting for a compatible human brain that it could work in concert with. Khrest explains that the appropriate brain was neither that of Thora or himself as one would assume. The robot brain found Perry's Arkonide-enhanced Terran brain to be the ideal one for its commander. Perry is now in complete and sole control of an Arkonide technological wonder.

Confesso-me indeciso sobre como caracterizar este episódio das aventuras de Rhodan. O lado ideológico de fardo de líder é colocado de lado, para ressurgir discretamente no final, e a tónica está na aventura pulp tradicional. Rhodan e os seus fiéis companheiros aterram no planeta Vénus para estabelecer uma base supra-terrestre e deparam-se com um segredo arcaico que une arcónidas e terrestres.
Vénus é caracterizado como uma espécie de áfrica estelar, cheio de florestas densas e povoado por estranhas e ameaçadoras criaturas afectadas por gigantismo, entre as quais se contam vermes gigantes de capacidade regenerativa quase infinita que vivem em simbiose com o que podem ser melhor descritos como arbustos arborícolas ambulantes, dinossauros tão grandes que entre cada passo passam-se minutos e criaturas anfíbias inteligentes semelhantes às focas terrestres. Sim, a ciência é largada às urtigas nesta visão selvática e africanizante de um planeta que na realidade é um forno vulcânico de atmosfera corrosiva. Mas se a nave de Rhodan se desfizesse, corroída pelos ares venusianos, a série depressa terminaria. Faz muito mais sentido recriar um planeta do sistema solar como um clássico mundo perdido literário, completo com um segredo milenar.
Esse segredo é um dos pontos mais intrigantes do episódio. Ao chegar a Vénus a nave terrestre/arcónida é atacada por forças desconhecidas. A habitual (previsível e imparável) argúcia de Rhodan permite a fuga e uma busca pelas selvas venusianas em busca da fortaleza inexpugnável de onde partiu o ataque. No seu interior espera-os a resposta a um mistério da história humana. A fortaleza é uma antiga base arcónida, estabelecida numa das primeiras ondas de colonização galáctica e esquecida pelo império. Mantida por andróides e um cérebro positrónico, revela-nos que os arcónidas tentaram colonizar a Terra num contintente hoje desaparecido, mas a colónia foi destruída por um cataclisma inexplicado que mergulhou o continente sob os mares. Os sobreviventes regressaram a Vénus e, nas naves restantes, partiram em direcção ao espaço profundo. Uma civilização avançada num continente submerso? É a Atlântida, exclama o leitor e Perry Rhodan, enquanto o arcónida Khrest se maravilha com um capítulo esquecido da história do seu mundo e a bela Thora se vê mais uma vez frustrada na sua vontade de regressar à civilização. Tanta frustração e a vida no meio dos selvagens com a presença do másculo Rhodan fazem antever qualquer coisa...
Neste episódio divertido o tom é de aventura pura, pouco plausível mas interessante. O rigor científico sai maltratado num livro onde o espírito pulp é reinante.

The Base on Venus.
After defeating some really sinister aliens Rhodan takes his ship and crew to the Moon. The objective is to salvage material from the destroyed Arkonid spaceship. It turns out that others have had the same idea, so a confrontation seems inevitable.
As soon as this subplot is resolved the scene is shifted to Venus. Here, the book takes on the classic tone of the unknown planet. The explorers encounter lifeforms, some quite fascinating in their own way, and giant trees as a homage to Burroughs. Beyond the trees lies a mountain where the true mystery awaits.
