Very simple book that explains the cornerstones of leadership and describes a good leader. It's just a bit boring because of how much sense it makes. :D
The book provides with a list of books in this topic to read, which I thought is particularly good.
It’s only now as I’m a bit older that I reflect on how people across my life have led and inspired me to do great work. It’s really obvious when we have a bad leader but what is more difficult is to articulate why someone is a great leader; it’s more of a feeling than something which can be bottled and sold. This book attempts to break down the components of what makes these great leaders and is inspiring as you’re left with a feeling that you want to be a great leader too; you want to pay back for the all times you’ve been led well. It doesn’t matter whether you are within a hierarchical structure that permits you to formally lead you can still lead the people around you towards a shared vision and outcome for whatever group you’re a part of. The book discusses that great leadership is about communicating with those around you the vision you have for a group or organisation and helping them to see that everything you do is for the shared benefit of the team. It’s about recognising the strengths of your team and making it known that you appreciate their hard work; rather than back seat leading and assuming they already know they are good at what they do. We all feel good when someone tells us we’ve done a good job; even when we know we have; why not spread that good feeling around? We are brainwashed by society that it’s a dog-eat-dog world and we need to compete and be better than everyone else and what this book reminds us is that we are better together and that happy, inspired and motivated people do great work.
A very clear and practical introduction to leadership. The book is divided in eight thematic chapters, including: 1. What is leadership?, 2. Creating a vision, 3. Building a team, 4. Communication, 5. Motivation and inspiration, 6. Performance management, 7. Leading change, and 8. Leading in turbulent times. Every chapter offers a clear explanation of the leadership theme, clarifies through anecdotes and quotes, gives tips on what to read further and summarizes the most important lessons. The book is a very good start for whom is interested to know more about good (and weak) leadership.
I read this book back in April 2011 when it was looking likely that I'd have a chance at promotion within my work place. I found it to be a very interesting read and whilst the chance of career progression never occurred I learnt many valuable things from this book. This book is not a step by step guide on how to be a great leader but it does show you on how to improve on what you already have by understanding the role of leadership in any social situation: why people need a leader, and what they also expect from their leader.
