I’ve cited Frank Zafiro’s River City books as worthy successors to Ed McBain’s 87th Precinct series.

This book continues that standard of achievement.

If you’re looking for a book that’s all candy and roses, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for a book that shows a realistic picture of modern policing, this is your cup of tea. Zafiro’s books have a sharper, more brutal edge than McBain’s, reflecting the harder, more dangerous world police operate in today.

Russian mobsters are preparing to take over River City. They plan to intimidate the black, white, and Hispanic gangs in the city into subservience and believe they can intimidate the police into letting them operate unfettered. At the same time, a lieutenant in their organization plots to displace the leader.

Zafiro portrays his cops as brave, foolhardy, vain, timorous, distracted, bold, fearless, and every other character trait real people (and real cops) have. Some funny, frightening, gritty, and ugly things happen to the cops in this book, and sometimes they make bad choices and suffer for them. And those things and bad choices will affect them in the future

I burned through this book in under 2 days. I look forward to seeing what impact events in this book have on Zafiro’s cops. The next book in the series is already on my ‘To Read’ pile.

Frank Zafiro’s fourth installment in his River City series, And Every Man Has to Die, finishes in heart-pounding and heartbreaking fashion.

Tension builds throughout the story as a new criminal element has moved in and they look to consolidate power among rival gangs. The River City Police Department must respond accordingly. In dealing with this issue, several different viewpoints are used—patrol officers, detectives, and department leaders. It makes for a fast and interesting read.

As a warning to new readers of the series, though—Do Not Read This Book First.

Read them in order as tragic events occur here that will forever change River City—the book’s title should be a clue that things don’t always end happily ever after.

Good book

A little more difficult to get into, but good toward middle and end. Still want to read the next in the series.
