Laat me niet alleen

De medisch studente Frances Sharkey ondervindt dat stervensbegeleiding de moeilijkste taak is die een arts heeft. Juist daarom besluit zij kinderarts te worden; kinderen hebben immers nog een heel leven voor zich?
Zij reageert geschokt als zij ervaart, dat ook kinderen kunnen sterven, en beseft dat haar onwil om hun dood te aanvaarden, et haar nog moeilijker maakt om deze kinderen bij te staan.
De behandeling van het leukemie-patientje David, zijn onherroepelijke overlijden, maar vooral de moedige wijze waarop dit ongeneeslijke zieke kind zijn lot ondergaat, brengen haar tot de overtuiging dat er nooit een goede manier is waarop een kind kan sterven, maar dat sommige manieren beter zijn dan andere.

Fue de los primeros libros que leí por voluntad propia, y aún recuerdo la historia como si lo hubiera leído ayer.
Es sobre un pequeño niño con cáncer y la doctora que lo atiende. Sobre cómo lleva él la enfermedad hasta que termina muriendo, como suele pasar con el cáncer. Y sobre todo lo que la doctora, que se dedicó a la pediatría porque creyó que así no vería mucho sufrimiento, aprende de él.
Es un libro tan hermoso, acaba muy triste y recuerdo que lloré, pero se me hizo una historia tan maravillosa que la leí como trese veces.

Though the Goodreads entry is in German, I found this at a used book sale and read it in English. This non-fiction account of how Dr. Sharkey's feeling develop towards the mortality of her youngest patients is moving. I would especially recommend this for young medical students.
