With these words, Isis--the mother goddess of Egypt--reveals herself to her devotee, Lucius Apuleius, in his novel The Golden Ass. Just as this great goddess claimed to be universal, mythology itself exists in all cultures around the globe and extends back to the beginnings of human civilization. Plato first coined the term mythologia to mean merely the telling of stories which contain legendary figures. Since his time, and especially now with the resurgent interest in myths, mythology has come to hold greater significance and power as a crucial element of civilization as a whole.
Written by a leading scholar of ancient civilizations, A Dictionary of World Mythology presents the powerful gods of Greece, Rome, and Scandinavia, the more mystical deities of Buddhist and Hindu India, and the stern spirits of the African and American continents together in one fascinating volume. Drawing upon hundreds of myths from around the globe, Arthur Cotterell not only reveals the vast differences in these civilizations, but also demonstrates the unity of mankind in its fundamental need for explanations of the unknown.
Cotterell divides the chief myths of the world into seven main sections--West Asia, South and Central Asia, East Asia, Europe, America, Africa, and Oceania. Traveling through this vast array of legendary riches, we encounter Gilgamesh, the tyrannical, semi-divine king of Babylonia, who, according to the Gilgamesh Epic, rejected Ishtar and thus caused the ravaging of the earth by Anu, the bull of heaven, and the death of his lifelong friend Enkidu. We learn that Dharma--the term meaning the doctrine of duties and rights of each caste in the Hindu religion's ideal society--was an ancient Hindu sage who married thirteen of Daksha's daughters, and that, according to the Mahabharata, Daksha sprang from the right thumb of Brahma. From East Asian mythology, we discover Tsao Chun, the gentle Chinese kitchen god whose temple exists in a small niche near the cooking stove. Along with the well-known Greek and Roman deities, Europe has also brought us Dagda, the ancient Irish deity of life and death, who could, with one end of his staff, kill nine men and could, with the other end, restore them to life; and Balder, "the bleeding god" of Germanic mythology, renowned for his good looks and wisdom. According to Native American tribes living along the Xingu River in Brazil, a legendary nation called Minata-Karaia once existed with men who had holes in the top of their heads which produced high, loud whistles, and bunches of coconuts growing from their armpits. From Africa, Ogun, the Yoruban war god, descended by a spider's thread upon the marshy waste that existed prior to the formation of the earth. We also meet Papa, the ancestress of Hawaiian people, who functioned as Earth goddess and queen of the underworld, as well as mother of the gods.
Each section contains an introduction highlighting the history, lifestyle, and ideology of the particular ancient civilizations, as well as the landscape in which they lived and the reasons why different mythologies arose in different lands.

Arthur Cotterell, former Principal of Kingston College in London, has spent many years combining senior educational management with historical research. He is the respected author of more than thirty books, and is now writing on the Chinese empire, from the history of which he considers one can learn as much about leadership as from Ashridge or Harvard.

أصل الأسطورة

إن الاهتمام الحديث بالأسطورة بشكل اعترافاً عاماً بقوة هذه القصص الشعرية, ولكن لازال هناك عدم اتفاق على مدى قوة الأسطورة فأفلاطون مثلاً والذي كان أول من استخدم كلمة الأسطورة لم يعنِ في تعريفه أكثر من حكاية القصص والتي توجد فيها عادة شخصيات أسطورية, أما أشخاصها الرئيسيون فلم يكونوا آلهة دائماً لأن اليونانيين كان لديهم عدد لا يحصى من الأبطال مثل هرقل وجيسون وثيوس, وهم أشهر أبطالهم, وربما أخذ هرقل أعماله الإثني عشر بسبب عداء الآلهة هيرا, ولكن مغامراته الإنسانية الخارقة لا ترقى إلى حد الألوهية, ويبقى النموذج للإنسان الذي لا يقهر. وتقول نظرية أخرى أن الأسطورة مستقاة من الطقوس وهذه النظرية مفتوحة للتساؤلات حتى في تقاليد غرب آسيا الأسطورية التي تعتبر المنبع الأول لهذه الشهادة

التقاليد العظيمة

لقد تم تنظيم هذا الكتاب لبحث سبعة تقاليد عظيمة من الأساطير العالمية خاصة أساطير غرب وجنوب وأواسط آسيا, أوروبا, أميركا, إفريقيا, والأوقيانوس. وفي كل من هذه المناطق توجد أساطير متميزة وعظيمة ففي غرب آسيا توجد ملحمة جلجامش السومرية الكونية. أما في أوروبا والأساطير اليونانية فتوجد أسطورة أودن, وفي أوقيانوس بولينيزيا فتروي القصص عن أعمال ماوي, ولكن لأسباب جغرافية فإن هناك درجة من التناسق الداخلي يمكن أن نعزوه إلى التأثير المتبادل. إن تأثير الزرادشتية الثنائية على الأديان هي نقطة تجدر الإشارة إليها. وقد تطور تقليدان في الأساطير في غرب آسيا وكان لهما تأثير كبير على أوروبا, بينما تغلغلت أساطير جنوب وأواسط آسيا بواسطة المعتقدات الهندوسية والبوذية.

كتاب جدير بالقراءة لمن يريد أن يستزيد في أصول الأساطير وتشابكها مع بعضها البعض عبر الحضارات وعبر القرون.. القدماء لهم خيال جامح بقي أثره علينا إلى اليوم.

من أفضل الكتب التي تتحدث عن الاساطير، لا يوجد فيه الكثير من التطرق إلي المحتوى الداخلي للاسطورة ولكنه يشرح الاسطورة باختصار شديد كقاموس. قسم الكتاب إلي اجزاء رئيسة ثم اعادة ترتيبه حسب الابجدية، اولاً تم تقسيم الاساطير حسب المناطق، ثم إلي الحروف في كل منطقة من الالف إلي الياء.

وهذا يسهل عليك معرفة الكثير عن الاساطير التي ترجو ان تعرف عنها اكثر من خلال اختيار التصنيف بالمنطقة ثم الحرف الذي تود الوصول اليه.

لقد تم تنظيم هذا الكتاب لبحث أشهر الأساطير العالمية .. أساطير غرب آسيا وجنوبها ووسطها ، وأوروبا ، وأمريكا ، وإفريقيا ، والأقيانوس . ففي كل هذه المناطق هناك أساطير متميزة ، ففي غرب آسيا هناك ملحمة جلجامش السومرية ، وفي أوروبا هناك الأساطير اليونانية كأسطورة أودن ، وفي أقيانوس بولينيزيا تروي القصص عن أعمال ماوي .

Some sections are well fleshed out but I was very disappointed in the American religion section. Two contents is a lot to cover. And he really didn't do them justice.

أساطير حضارات ومعتقدات العالم مرتبة أبجدياً وتحت التنصيف الجغرافي للقارات، أعجبني هذا القاموس لترتيبه وسهولة أسلوبه، وبالتأكيد هناك الكثير من الأساطير التي نجهلها والتي قد تكون كذلك ليست جذابة بالنسبة لأساطير أخرى، ولكن هناك نقطة جانبية وهي ملاحظتي لخطأ في بداية قراءتي للكتاب، فعند وصولي لـ(آنوبيس) تم ذكر أنه إله جنائزي عند المصريين وله وجه ثعلب ! .. من المفترض أن أنوبيس له وجه حيوان (ابن آوى) وليس وجه ثعلب، وهذا ما جعلني أشك أن الكتاب يحتوي على بعض الأخطاء، لا أدري إن كانت أخطاء في الترجمة أم في النص الأصلي !

This book contains information about the major mythical Gods and the role they play in ancient mythology. The sections of the book are created for each of the major continents with the major cultures provided some coverage. For instance, the E. Asia section includes Gods from China, Japan, IndoChina and Siberia. Good basic resource with some definitions.

الكتاب كويس من حيث شمول موضوعاته، لكنه بيحتوي علي اخطاء جسيمة في بعض الأحيان و كذلك الترجمة العربية سيئة للغاية
