1939 - The War That Had Many Fathers: The Long Run-Up to the Second World War

Rate this book
The author’s research leads to some surprising conclusions. Documents from foreign ministries, and notes and memoranda from British, French, Italian and American leaders, ministers, diplomats and military commanders, prove that quite a number of countries were involved in instigating World War II. Interconnections, hitherto overlooked, are made clear. “This war”, writes Schultze-Rhonhof, “had many fathers.” Much in our German history from 1919 to 1939 cannot be understood without cognizance of contemporary events in other actions and reactions are closely linked together. Yet it was not only contemporary events in neighboring nations which contributed to the start of the war, it was also, and not insignificantly, the joint prehistory of the disputing parties. Almost every history has a prehistory.

This book offers all you need to know about the facts that triggered WW II. For obvious reasons Mr. Schultze-Rohnhof deals extensively with the events pre-WW I and the impact of the Versailles treaty. The author shows the imbalanced punishment of the empires that lost the war, i.e. Austria-Hungary and Germany. On top of that, the former Allies refused to disarm as agreed at Versailles and the right of self determination did not hold for Austria or Sudeten Germany.

The book clearly shows that the rule of power guided USA and Great Britain to start a war against Germany. Its support to revanchist France, communist Soviet-Union and irredentist Poland set hybris alight and turned Europe into a new World War. As France and Great Britain did not care about human rights in their colonies, as Soviet Union was ruled by the rude dictator Stalin and as Poland was overtly anti-semitic, it becomes hard to see WW II as a war to be fought on moral grounds.

Please be warned. This book is not for serious readers of history. The author is not a historian. The book is the furthest thing from objective. It has the tone of a closing argument and one can sense the author frothing at the mouth as he writes. It is dumbfounding how this book got such a high rating. I can only assume that it was rated so by contrarians and Germans weary of war guilt.

This book inspired my own ... it is fact filled and provides a solid 360-degree view of events that led up to the war. Its not an apologia for Nazi Germany, but clearly outlines the outside forces that drove its birth and development.

Absurd nazi apologetics, which don't hold up to the slightest scrutiny or investigation of sources used by this unbelievably one sided author. It's crazy that so many reviewers fall for this slop. Even a cursory comparison to literature produced by actual historians will expose unfixable contradictions.
