Doctor Who: The Eye of the Jungle

Rate this book
The Amazon rainforest, 1827. The Doctor, Amy and Rory arrive in the jungle near a hurriedly abandoned campsite, where they are surrounded by hungry black caiman - huge lizards. Only the arrival of a man with a rifle sees off the giant beasts. Oliver Blazington has come to the forest to bag big game, and his companion Garrett is a naturalist, collecting exotic creatures for London Zoo. But the Doctor soon discovers that another very different hunter is stalking the Amazon. Animals and people have been disappearing without trace, and local villagers speak darkly of 'The Eye of the Jungle'. Amy senses that the all-seeing Eye is watching them - but she and Rory are powerless to intervene when it sets its sights on the Doctor... Written specially for audio by Darren Jones and read by David Troughton, The Eye of the Jungle features the Doctor, Amy and Rory as played by Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill in the acclaimed hit series from BBC Television.

This short story is only available as an audiobook and is based on the television series. In this one, Matt Smith's Doctor along with Amy and Rory land on an expedition in the Amazon during the early nineteenth century. More happens than a simple expedition.

Nothing really special here. Our traveling crew ends up meeting an alien race that experiments with gene splicing to create the ultimate warrior and our crew puts a stop to it. I have listened to several of these short audiobook stories in this universe and this one was pretty weak. For some reason this story kept on reminding me of the Creature Features that use to broadcast on Saturday afternoons when I was a kid. They entertained me but I was a child. Looking back now I realize they were cheesy with the story and the effects. I had no problem with the narration as our main characters were done well. Some of the minor characters were somewhat laughable.

I purchased a whole collection of these stories and I am slowly working my way thru them. One expects a weak one every now and then. This is one of those weak ones.

i don't know how to dislike more, the pet collecter or the mad scientist aliens.

A decent little story. I liked the setting in the early 19th Century Amazon. A familiar enough tale of dabbling in genetic stuff with ugly results. What helped this to stand out was the ex-solider struggling to find a new purpose in life and his attitude to hunting.

The narrator did a decent job of bringing the characters to life even though his impression of certain main characters wasn't the best. He still was able to get their tone across. Plus, this was a pretty decent example of bopping as well.

Listened to the version read by David Troughton. A fun Amy & Rory adventure in the jungle.

This is a light audiobook that definitely captures the cavalier, careless violence of the eleventh doctor. The narration is good, and while I could wish that Amy and Rory had a little more depth, I understand that in a short work like this one that sort of thing is difficult to do. A fine "missing episode" that fans of the show will enjoy.

Audio Book via Audible

This is not all 11th Doctor story, but if you are able to put that aside it is a good Doctor story.

It is read by the 2nd Doctors (Patrick Troughton) son (David Troughton) and therefore sounds like an early era Doctor Who story, which I can appreciate, except it's supposed to be an 11th Doctor story. With the exception of one usage of the word "Geronimo" it was a pretty generic Doctor story.

That being said I did enjoy the story and it has a relatively happy ending.

Very enjoyable! It's the early 19th century and The Doctor, Rory, and Amy find themselves in the Amazon. This story had a lot of layers which I really enjoyed. The narration by David Troughton was very nice and he did his best to capture the essense of the characters. I think the writing of the characters could have been a bit better and there was a definite lack of the 11th Doctor's humor. Still, a great plot that seemed to have a good amount of symbolism considering the medium.

A short listen. It was Doctor Who. It spoke a little to genetic engineering and the challenges of military personnel getting back into normal society although I'm not sure I liked how either were resolved. Still, it was Doctor Who. I'd listen to more of these.

As always, I'm a sucker for biopunk, and I think this is about as close as Doctor Who can get to it.

The eye of the jungle is a unique adventure that I highly recommend.

I liked this little story, set in the 19th century where the doctor, Amy and Rory find themselves in the Amazon jungle where not all is as it seems...

There were plenty of villains to dislike and schemes to overcome in this one, and it was entertaining with a good plot. The audio wasn’t too bad however the narrator didn’t quite do justice to the doctors character ! But other than that, not too bad. I liked how it ended and it was wrapped up well, a nice little adventure with the Doctor and his companions.

I continue to enjoy this series. Although I do not think it is as good as the 10th or the 12th Doctor's run of similar stories, YMMV. This story is set in the Amazon jungle and involves a lot of missing villagers, a big game hunter, and a collector for the London Zoo. The stories in this collection are almost too short to tell a good story because there is no time to go in-depth into anything. Having said that these stories are still enjoyable and are a fun way to pass an hour or so.

wait there was a second part to this audiobook so i judged it too soon, i enjoyed the narration, and the story was actually quite interesting but it was hard to root for any of the characters except the natives and the tardis crew

Doctor Who: Eye of the Jungle

The Eleventh Doctor, Rory, and Amy were planning on a fun trip to an amusement park. Needless to say, they were surprised to walk out into the Amazon jungle. Amy is ready to try again, but of course the Doctor wants to look around first. Then, he learned about the disappearances.

This truly feels like an episode of Doctor Who. I can see the cast doing everything that they would in an actual episode. The narrator was good, but he was not one of the actors from the series.

И вскоре наши ребята слышат упоминание о the eye of the jungle, которое якобы «забирает» всех без разбору (люди просто исчезают).

Wow.

This was good. David Troughton is a good reader though some of his few attempts at character voices were not great.

The Doctor, Amy, and Rory land in the Amazon in 1827. Saved by a nearby hunting group after a group of huge black caiman (big lizards) attack; the group discover there are numerous people in a local village going missing; as well as many creatures. Locals fear it is "The Eye of the Jungle" taking them...

The plot is simple and while the longer length (this one is two discs instead of just one) helps this one be a bit more fully developed than other audiodramas; the extra time doesn't really add much to the characters of the Doctor, Amy, or Rory, and the sonic screwdriver is definitely the usual Deux ex Machina. Still, it is entertaining with a decent pace and reveal of the mystery.

The narrator was very good. There were good sound effects, and music from the Dr. Who shows. There were only two parts to this book, so it went very fast. I listened to half the book as I did the laundry, and made the bed. I listened to the other half in bed, before going to sleep.

I check this book out again, and only finished half of it, before going on vacation. The book was zapped off my kindle before I finished it for the second time.

A decent enough audiobook read very effectively by David Troughton; aliens intrude into an 1827 British expedition on the Amazon, with some fairly horrific experiments being carried out on their captives - not really one for the younger listener!

Enjoyable short adventure with Amy, Rory, and the Doctor. Unlike some of the other audio Doctor Who titles I've listened to, this one focuses more on the Doctor and his companions, which I greatly appreciated, since that is why I had picked this up from the library in the first place.

I enjoyed this fun, short Doctor Who story. The concept and aliens were interesting and it was well writen. The character of Blazington in particular stood out as compelling. .

This was a fine little tale of the Doctor that thinks it's cleverer than it is. Nothing great, nothing terrible. Popcorn fiction.
