Five years after a plague ravishes the earth, a group of survivors begin civilization again in a perfect community they call, Beginnings. Nestled deep in the woods, surrounded by security walls, they are secluded and sheltered from the savagery of the world outside their home. In Beginnings only the select are allowed in and the bad are tossed out. For five long years, Robbie Slagel searched for the father and brother he knew were alive. A father and brother who dwell inside the protective walls of Beginnings. During a routine search for ‘fit’ survivors, Robbie is discovered by Beginnings. The prodigal son returns. He is welcomed and then . . . he is cast back out when they discover he's become a bad seed. The walls begin to crumble in a heart wrenching way as Robbie bands together survivors and outcasts, plotting his revenge against Beginnings, his father and brother. The road was too long to find his family and he vows his search will not be in vain. Cain is the second book in the Beginnings Series. It does, however stand alone and can be read with or without reading the predecessor, The Silent Victor.
Ok so I usually like the books Ms. Druga writes, but I do not like this series at all. I've only read the first two out of 27(!!) but I won't read anymore. The characters lack depth and I can't stand them. Ellen is a completely irresponsible character. Two minutes after her kids die, she needs a baby so bad that she can't give her lover a minute to get over his own children before making a new one because she is desperate to be a mother. Book two she is too busy chasing after the callous frank to even look at the children. She is done with him one second and then racing to him the next. It's almost ridiculous how immature she is, and so is Frank.
Then we know they need to build their community but they are so completely uncaring to the trauma that other survivors may have faced out in the world. They allow one mistake before they toss them back out to the world. They completely seem to lack any kind of empathy for fellow humans.
There is not one character that had any kind of substance to them. We don't really get to know these characters. They are all so cold hearted and jerky to each other at times. But there are 27 books in this series, so someone must be enjoying them. However I cannot force myself to do it anymore. I strongly dislike all the characters in both the first two books.
I tried to like it but it was the same as the 1st book. Unlikable characters, poor dialog between them. I love J. Druga's other books so much, that it's hard to believe she wrote this series.....let alone has 28 books in the series! Usually her book characters, while being realistic, are good people you can grow to love as you turn the pages. But for once, there was not a single character I could like. Very disappointed in these books.
I keep attempting to read another book thinking it may be good by this author. These heroines are cringe worthy selfish piece of unlikable poop. This author always kills of the kids quickly, then oh let's have a baby the next week... There is not one likable character which makes forcing yourself to finished the book extremely unpleasant. If you like selfish psycho cheating unlikable characters look no further, this author enjoys creating them.
You know, I've read about 35 Druga novels now and something has bothered me several times. The obsessive habit of creating unlikable, stupid female leads. I just don't understand. From a male we'd call this misogyny. What do we call it when it's always coming from a fellow woman? I'm finished with this author
This has been a great series, with the greatest cast of characters ever. I did not see the ending coming the way it ended. It's the best ending anyone could ever think of. You need to read the series just so you can read her ending. I recommend reading this to all that love fiction.
I love this Series, but gave 3 stars because of the Ellen character, I can't stand her! She needed to be booted! Everyone else was great, the story was done very well. I would definitely recommend
A good second part to this exciting end of the world series by Jaqueline Druga! A really good read! Interesting plot & character development & overall very enjoyable!
The survivors of book one have settled into their new place they call home and Beginnings. and have worked well together to develop a fairly nice and comfortable Community. long thought dead family are reunited. There is another group of survivors that consist of some that home then exiled from beginnings a number of different reasons. let's just say one always seems to want the great things, but rather put more energy into trying to obtain it violently than 2 put the energy into it in a constructed way, that is what develops between these two. Again I love the book, the only thing I found that really kind of started to get on my nerves were Ellen and Frank for 2 adults they are the biggest babies, they remind me of junior high school kids. You're such a grown strong man Frank sure does whine a lot. And Ellen and Frank really should have a lot more respect for themselves and those around them!
Honestly I'm compelled by the story and I've never been disappointed in a Jacqueline Druga book until I started this series but it's just exhausting to read.
The character of Frank is so unpleasant it feels he's down right abusive at times and so is his father Joe.
Ellen is painfully selfish and dislikable as well and everyone seems to worship her.
I'll stick it out for a while longer as I can read them through Kindle Unlimited but something has to give soon or I'm out.
