This book is chock full of information. It is not for everyone. It's very wordy and it constantly goes between Geek and Latin. I enjoy ancient civilization information so it was worth the extra work.
Considering the book's age it might be a good idea for a scholar of the topics covered to augment it with more recent research and update the language. Having said that it is still a very informative book.
I was especially interested in the Babylonian and Assyrian chapters. They then inspired me to read further antiquarian titles about this civilisation. Mostly, it is a list of rulers, their genealogy and major accomplishments as recorded in scant (sometimes mis)translated tablets. Use as a reference text with with caution.
Not so much read as abandoned. I usually enjoy history books but half was in Latin and it spent or of time listing where places were in relation to landmarks that no longer exist.
