The world of Theorrey runs like a well-oiled machine. The elements are in balance, passion is tamed, and the young queen is the heartbeat of it all. But in these two all-new stories of elemental steam, nothing is ever as it seems.
Earthly Desires
Demeter “Dare” Senedal is the Queen’s Chalice-her protector and closest companion. So when the queen goes missing, Dare rushes to locate her, even though the search leads her straight into trouble.
A gentleman who trades in secrets and sin, Bodhan revels in carnal delights, but when a naked and bound woman appears on his shore, he finds his hunger to possess at odds with his need to protect. As Bodhan shares his knowledge of pleasure, Dare must decide if she can trust him, both with her mission and her heart.
Fiery Temptations
Seraphina always lands on her feet. After all, she is a Felidae-more feline than human-and an excellent thief. There has never been a job Phina wouldn’t take or a man who could tame her…until she meets Cyrus Arendal.
As the Queen’s Sword, Cyrus should have known better than to fall victim to a beautiful bandit. Now, to find and retrieve the moonfire dagger, he’ll need to convince Phina not to judge a man by his station, but rather by how completely he can satisfy her desires.
Rachel Grace loves airship battles and sexy heroes with a dark side. She currently writes steampunk fantasy romance for Berkley Heat. Her bestselling alter ego, R.G. Alexander, also writes contemporary and paranormal erotic romance for Berkley Heat as well as multiple e-publishers, including Samhain and Ellora’s Cave. Both personalities are represented by Roberta Brown of the Brown Literary Agency.
When not lost in daydreams of sword fights and sexy bedroom scenes, she can be found working on her steampunk costume for the annual photoshoot with her group blog The Smutketeers.
but guess what?? against all odds, i liked this one. like, i 3.5 star liked this one. is that weird? am i finally coming over to the darkside of steampunk loooove books? am i going to be one of the ladies elbowing others out of the way to get my hands on the monthly deliveries of harlequin extras? it could happen. i am greasing my elbows.
usually, reading the things we read for this group, i just have the "git-r-done" attitude, as the great philosopher would say. i read them so i can post a humorous review of them, and then i go on to read something that is more to my liking. but this one wasn't bad. i have chosen to read books that were way worse than this.
a lot of my liking of it was the characters. not so much bodhan; he's pretty stock: handsome, chiseled, knows how to give a woman pleasure, but not how to give her... his heart. a brothel-owner who protects the ladies in his employ and does not sully them with his magnificent body and allows them carte blanche to choose which lover will have the privilege of bedding and paying for them. but the ladies are more fun. dare is at once the wide-eyed virgin who has never felt anything stirring in her ladybits, but she is also a badass blue-haired fighter, and when those ladybits begin to stir, she is pretty enthusiastic about it. the other lady is part cat. 'nuff said.
another is the lack of ridiculous sexual euphemisms. manroot, honey-pot, love-stick... a cock by any other name does not smell as sweet. erm... but you know what i mean. this book contained sex-without-evasion. and as little as i am able to become aroused by the written word, i would objectively classify these sex scenes as "hot."
although the hygiene-queen in me revolts at the sex-in-the bath scene that follows dare shed(ding) her grime-covered clothes before lowering herself into its soothing depths. after both of them have been fighting, and traveling, and becoming filthy, the last thing you want is to get all intimate in a tub full of floating leaves and washed-off blood and dirt etc. seriously - none of these novels ever take into account the pain of a UTI, do they?
but, so points for characters, points for straightforward intercourse terminology, and points for being two separate novellas progressing one storyline. that way, we had all the characters involved, but we didn't have to become bored with one POV for 350+ pages. smart move. BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW that the story does not get resolved in this book. so i guess more is forthcoming. and if i were to continue this series, it would be on my own, without the filmy-gauze protection of saying i am reading it for the bodice-rippers group.
will i do it?? will i make that leap?? your guess is as good as mine.
RBRS* STEERING COMMITTEE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14TH, 2012
DRAFT MINUTES
Committee Members Present: Elizabeth, karen, Ceridwen, Allison, mark Committee Members Absent: Joel, Jen, Bazi
_________________________
1. Introductions
2. Review/Approve Draft Agenda for "Geared for Pleasure" - VOTE The meeting was called to order at Sexy O'Clock by Co-Chairs (CC) Ceridwen and Elizabeth. Council Member (CM) Allison stated that she did not vote for this novel, and sighed. Quorum was established (barely) and the agenda was approved by consensus.
3. Review/Approve Draft Minutes for past agenda "The Bone Palace" - VOTE Committees discussed several sexy puns that could be considered for "The Bone Palace". Minutes were approved by consensus.
4. Announcements CC Ceridwen announced the upcoming agenda for "The Dirty Girls Book Club". No eyes were rolled and all faces remained straight.
5. Public Comment No public was present for this very private and sexy meeting.
6. Bodice-Ripping Needs Assessment Update - VOTE CCs Elizabeth and Ceridwen reviewed their findings. CC Ceridwen noted the novel's success at engaging with dominance and submission. CC Elizabeth rolled her eyes while pointing out the heroine's surprise orgasm. CM mark gave her a sympathetic glance. CM karen noted her appreciation of the love scenes as "hot" while underlining her ongoing concerns with hygiene and urinary tract infections. CM Allison agreed that the sex scenes were "hot" and also "badass". CM mark hemmed and hawed a bit per usual, agreed with the presence of bodice-ripping, and finally admitted to ever so slightly enjoying these elements of the novel. When asked to explain in further detail, CM mark explained that he found the heroine to be rather whiny and clueless and breathless, which created a barrier to fully enjoying the ripping of bodices etc in the novel's first half. However he did enjoy the dominatrix-thief cat-woman protagonist of the novel's second half because "who doesn't enjoy a dominatrix-thief cat-woman". He did not particularly notice the novel's play with dominance and submission due to this theme being a regular part of his fantasy life, but stated that he appreciated CC Ceridwen's comments as "illuminating". CC Ceridwen rolled her eyes. CM karen moved to accept the needs of Bodice-Ripping as fully assessed and was seconded by CC Ceridwen. Motion passed 4-1.
7. Steampunk Needs Assessment Update - VOTE CC Ceridwen and CM mark reviewed their findings. CC Ceridwen provided an overview of steampunk wardrobes and accessories, and then noted that although such elements were present in the novel, they turned out to be on the whole minimal. CM mark - who amusingly fancies himself to be a well-read novice in the field of steampunk - found the inclusion of steampunk in the novel to be enjoyable but rather light, and determined that the novel itself could not be considered as "Steampunk" due to the haphazard use of steampunk motifs. CM mark also expressed frustration with the novel's title, which he felt promised much steampunk but instead delivered slightly tweaked, steampunk-y science fantasy instead. CC Elizabeth stated that she found the steampunk elements to be acceptable. CM karen made a small comment regarding steampunk that shall go unrecorded. CM Allison remained silent on the topic. CM mark moved that Geared for Pleasure not be considered as a Steampunk novel. Motion failed 1-0 with 4 abstentions.
8. Gender and Characterization Report CC Ceridwen noted that her findings on gender in Geared for Pleasure were included in agenda item 6. CM karen stated her appreciation of the characterization, with the exception of the alpha male "Bodhan". CC Elizabeth discussed the idea that some authors are too close to their characters and thus those characters never truly feel in danger. She also noted, in a sarcastic voice, that some bodies are always surprised at their capacity for pleasure. CM mark concurred with all perspectives per usual and then discussed his favorite character, the dominatrix-thief cat-woman. He discussed this character at extreme length, including the idea of a dominatrix turning into a submissive for just the right person, until it became mortifyingly clear that this character type represents an apparently regular source of ongoing fantasy activities for CM mark. An uncomfortable silence ensued. Finally, CM mark quickly stated that he thought the characterization was serviceable: "Shallow but who cares, they were fun. I mean, look at the cover. I'm not expecting Dostoevsky. And that dominatrix-thief cat-woman, wow...". CM Allison stared at CM mark incredulously but remained silent. A silence which spoke volumes.
9. Writing Ability Report Still noticeably uncomfortable, committee members quietly shuffled papers and exchanged meaningful glances. Eventually, CC Ceridwen stated that "there were some interesting things going on." CM karen noted her appreciation of the lack of trite vernacular for sexual organs. CC Elizabeth reiterated that some authors may be too close to their characters. CM Allsion stated flatly that the writing was horrible. CM mark rambled "Er, well, I sorta thought the writing was fine. No real complaints. I liked the world-building. Overall it was fun and sexy and light and even interesting at times too, I really had a lot of fun reading this one, seriously. And I will definitely be reading the sequels whenever they come out! I mean, aren't you guys going to read them? Aren't you??" His fellow committee members proceeded to study the ceiling.
Demeter “Dare” Senedal is the Queen Idony of Theorrey’s Chalice. She has stood at the Queens’ side for many years. It has been Dare’s job to protect the Queen and along the way they became great friends. Suspicious things are happening in Theorrey. First, Dare’s counterpart the Queen’s Sword goes missing and now the Queen herself has been taken. The culprits thought they could replace the Queen with an automation but they cannot fool the Queen’s Chalice. Dare will do whatever it takes to find her missing Queen.
Bodhan, the Captain of the great underwater ship The Siren is caught off guard by the beautiful girl with the indigo hair that drops into his lap. Bodhan’s Siren delivers pleasure to those of all races. It is a place where many come to sell sin and secrets. While Dare seeks answers to all her burning questions, Bodhan plans to show Dare what untapped pleasures she has hidden within.
“Earthy Desires” starts what is bound to be one massive and magical story. As Dare struggles to find her Queen she is introduced to the cruel world beyond the safe walls of the Queen’s palace. I found Dare to be a strong and compelling character that I eagerly followed her journey. Bodhan, the man may be made for sin, but it is his heroic nature and protective qualities that will make you fall in love with him. This couple is electric and their desire rages as they begin a beautiful seduction in “Earthly Desires.”
“Fiery Temptations”
Seraphina is a Felidae. Her race is degraded among the Theorrey hierarchy and they are regulated to the mines. Seraphina however is unique among her kind. She is known as Phina Fleet for her ability to seduce, steal and get out of the worst situations unscathed. Seraphina is also most loyal to Queen Idony. When Seraphina realizes she has done a grave injustice to one the Queen holds dear, she is conflicted. Although her confliction has as much to do with the harm she caused, as the unwanted feelings the victim stimulates.
Cyrus is the Queen’s Sword, his mission was clear until he was seduced by the tempting Phina Fleet. His weakness for the stunning Felidae cost him more than his mission. Yet the past must be set aside, for now he needs the beautiful Phina’s help if he is to retrieve his sacred dagger and find his Queen. Phina and Cyrus battle more than their enemies, they also battle their desire for each other. Will they be victorious at fighting off their feelings or submit to their every desire?
“Fiery Temptations” is one hot-blooded novella embedded in an out of this world story! Phina and Cyrus’ story is filled with heartache and danger. I could feel the sexual tension dripping off of these characters. The pain is clear as they fight off the feelings burning them alive. The drama is high as Phina and Cyrus battle each other in the midst of their enemies. “Fiery Temptations” lives up to its name! This is one temptation you don’t want to miss!
Rachel Grace’s Geared For Pleasure is a steampunk fantasy dream come true. I must admit Steampunk has not been my favorite genre, but evidently I was reading the wrong books because Ms. Grace has won me over! As I turned the pages of Geared For Pleasure I was immediately gripped by the intense and ingenious world of Theorrey. Ms. Grace has started her Elemental Steam series off with a sensuous feast of a story brimming with captivating characters. The mystery surrounding the Queen’s disappearance is only one of the many intriguing secrets waiting to be revealed in this enchanting novel. The startling and awe-inspiring machines that make up this steampunk world are mystifying and had me giddy with excitement. Ms. Grace does an excellent job of painting a brilliant picture of her world for the reader. I would love to see Geared For Pleasure come to life on the silver screen. I can see this vivid world so clearly and all of the characters in it. I am dying to figure out what will happen next in this alluring series. I can’t wait to find out which characters will succumb to their passionate desires. Geared For Pleasure is a sinfully delicious steampunk treat that is certain to become your next addiction.
WOW! was my first thought after reading this impressive book by new to me author Rachel Grace (R.G. Alexander). The book is actually divided into two connecting stories, where the first story ends, the second picks up. I’m placing Geared for Pleasure in the fantasy/science fiction category. Some call it Steampunk, but others are not familiar with that term yet. I always love a good fantasy action book and that’s exactly what I got with this one and the added erotic romance was an added bonus. The author paints a gloriously vivid picture of the world of Theorrey and I quickly became enthralled with this world and intrigued with the fascinating cast of characters.
In the first story, Earthly Desires, we meet Dare, the missing Queen’s chalice and close friend, and Bodhan the captain of the underwater vessel, the Siren. The captain has many colorful people aboard his ship which we learn enough about to keep us guessing. The story begins with Dare leaving her post because someone has kidnapped the Queen and it is her job to find her and bring her back safe. She ends up on the Siren with the most handsome captain who is just as leery of her as she is of him. I felt sorry for Dare throughout the story because everything she believed true in her life ends up being something different and she seems somewhat lost. And although the captain presents himself rather illusive, once he begins to have feelings for her, he stops at nothing to assist with her mission. Their love affair is seductive, sexy, and filled with passion. Bodhan is one of those characters with commanding presence. The man makes my toes curl.
So, now that we know all about Theorrey- the secrets, lies, deceitful, and traitorous behavior, we pick up right where we left off. Only this story centers around Cyrus, the Queen’s Sword and Phina, a dangerously seductive woman who can charm the pants off of any man in order to steel from him. Phina goes from a supporting role in the first story to front and center in the 2nd. Cyrus worked with Dare in the castle but was betrayed and kidnapped only to find his way back to the Deviant, the air ship used to further the mission this go around. Phina is a complex and highly sexual creature who never thought she could have happiness and true love. She is a hard one to break, but Cyrus is the man up for the task, which makes him perfect for her. I love them together because even though they found their HEA, it will NEVER be boring. They will each keep the other one on their toes. Their crusade is packed full of action, steamy sex, and even more interesting characters are brought into the mix.
The author did a wonderful job with the character development and world building and I couldn’t be more excited to read the next book of stories in the series. No matter if they are small or large, cliff hangers are just wrong, so I’ll need the next release to hurry and get here.
Buckle your seatbelts and get ready for an action packed and erotic adventure that will leave you wanting more from the world of Theorrey.
This book is actually 2 stories which I'll review individually, but let me give you some general basic info. I admit that this might be my first steampunk-ish style book and I might've been a bit skeptical of picking it up, however, I love Jules Verne and having read that the author said some of those elements are in this series, as well as the fact that incorporates erotic elements, then I was anxious to see what came out of that!
Geared for Pleasure is non-stop adventure whether you're aboard a brothel at sea or trying to uncover treason against the Queen. Even though a bit slow to get started, at least for me, once the story got going it didn't stop. Characters you can't help but like and a world you might not want to live in but would love to visit.
Earthly Desires
Earthly Desires follows the Queens Chalice (protector and companion), Dare, in her quest to find the Deviant ship and talk to the Captain in order to save the queen. She was raised to protect the queen, and her life has always been sheltered. In her first trip outside the walls of her tower she will learn there's a whole new world out there. And a lot of things that she wants to experience. She is pure at heart, strong and loyal, and she has one other talent, empathy. Her cross to bear is being able to feel what others are feeling, but this ability also guides her in her journey and keeps her alive.
Along the way she meets Bodhan. The epitome of a bad boy. The question is whose side is he on? And can she actually resist the sexy and wicked owner of said brothel ship, the Siren?
Dare will have to get past her innocence to fulfill her task, but also experiences so many emotions and physical needs. I loved seeing her transformation and development throughout this story.
Fiery Temptations
Seraphina was such a fun character during the first story as well as in this one! She's Felidae, and to describe her best picture fiery red hair, always wearing sexy corsets and skimpy outfits, she has a tail, a whip, sharp teeth and retractable claws, as well as spots on her skin. She's not embarrassed of her sexual preferences or of offering her services aboard the Siren from time to time. She has enough attitude for the whole crew of the ship! Fiesty!
But there was one Wode that caught her eye and she can't seem to stay away from him. Cyrus. The Queen's Sword. After her betrayal aboard the Siren, which led to his capture and when he lost a special dagger given to him by the queen, they have to overcome their differences and work together to get out alive of Centre City where he needs to recover his dagger.
There are some unexpected revelations about her past and her family and her relation to the Queen. I feel these two were an excellent match given both their backgrounds!
If you are in the mood for something different, well written and sexy, you should definitely give this a try!
4.5 stars Trickery, plain and simple. Between the title and the cover I was prepared for a smutty steampunk erotica. What it is really folks, is a steampunk adventure with an ensemble cast worthy of any epic. There is humor, adventure, new species and peoples. There is love, redemption, mystery and promise for more in the series. I really enjoyed this book. Multiple story lines weave in and out of each other and form a lovely braid. I found the complexity stimulating and rarely confusing. As for the smut I was so teasingly offered, there was more than a little, but less than could define this story as true erotica.
When I decided to read “Geared for Pleasure” by Rachel Grace I thought that I would read another typical steampunk / paranormal romance book. I was so wrong! Firstly, this book is actually two stories into one book. It’s the same story but the first part tells us the story of two of the main characters and the second part the story of the other two. There are not two different stories, just one but the secondary characters from the first story are the main in the second and vice versa. And secondly, this book kept my interest from the beginning to the end! Non-stop adventure, romance, mystery and an amazing world-building!
So, I thought that it would be better to review the stories separately. The five stars are for both of stories of course! I loved this book!
“Earthly Desires”
“Earthly Desires” introduce us in a very weird world where everything feels familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. It’s the first story in this steampunk novel and I have to say that it kept my interest from the beginning.
Demeter “Dare” Senedal is not a usual woman. She is the protector of the Theorrey Queen and when the Queen is missing an adventure starts for Dare and she is forced to leave her safe home to travel to the unknown. Soon, she finds herself in a mystery underwater ship where every man and woman can live his/her sexual fantasy. But Dare, thinks she can endure everything because her focus is to the rescue of her Queen. And this is true, until she meets the sexy and mysterious captain of the ship, Bodhan.
Dare is a very interesting character. I liked the way she was at lost at first and how she’s trying to adjust to the new situation. At first, I was afraid that she will be scared or that she’ll make bad decisions but soon I realized that she is very smart and that she’s more than capable to handle all the situations. Bodhan is amazing! At the beginning I thought that he is just another sexy and strong man, but he is so much more. He is a good judge of characters and he’s not afraid to experience new feelings. He listened before he acted and it was a nice change from all the male characters that almost every time aren’t so good listeners.
The story is very well-written and I have to admit that the author knows how to write amazing sex scenes.
“Fiery Temptations”
The second story is about Seraphina and Cyrus. The reader already knows about their past from the previous story but now it’s time to know them better. Seraphina is a very unique creature. Born in a race which is destined to work in the mines she has managed to live another life. She is a master in seduction and in pleasure but she is also a thief master and very good at escaping from the most difficult situations. Loyal to the Queen and very capable of doing everything she wants until she made a mistake. This mistake isn’t only bad for the Queen but for herself also.
Seraphina is a brave woman. Many men think that they know her, but only a few have seen her true self. It’s good to see a woman who always had what she wished for to find her master in a person very different from her.
Cyrus is the Queen’s Sword. A brave and loyal man who finds himself suddenly in a bad situation because he was seduced by Seraphina and then she betrayed him. Not willingly but that doesn’t matter to him. He had a mission and he thinks he failed because of her. But at the same time he wants her more than everything. Cyrus is a great guy although sometimes he’s kind of abrupt. I don’t blame him because from one day to another his life and what he knew changed.
This story is also very well-written and although it was shorter than the first it was also a great read! If you love steampunk and paranormal romance you should read this book immediately!
Reading this book must be what having schizophrenia feels like.
In a statement: This book is so confusing. Maybe I'm not bright enough? Whatever... But I was constantly scratching my head going: Wait, who's this? How does that work? Hold on, when did they get to this place? How long have they been here?
As a writing style, action first, explanation later works well, but only after one's overly complicated world has had some cursory explanation -- or at least a defined objective. Example: From the very beginning it was understood, thanks to a cursory explanation of Oz from a village of little people, that no matter what weird shit happened to Dorothy, she needed to pick herself up, dust herself off, step back onto that damn yellow brick road and go in search of the Wizard. Tiny people, stupid scarecrows, frightened lions, flying monkeys, water-phobic witches, it all soaked right into the story because, the reader could always return to that yellow brick road.
But there's no Yellow Brick Road in this story. Or a Wizard...(Well, there's one, called the Khephi, but no one's trying to get to him, and we're not sure if he's a bad guy or a good guy in the end.) Anyway... The characters of Geared for Pleasure, i.e. Theorrey, are living day-by-day, each one holding on tightly to their piece of the puzzle. One or two of them may have some objective, that's unclear, BUT they sure as shit aren't going to tell you. Because Ms. Grace's plot is to us what Russia was to Churchill: a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.
NOW! Add to that: rushed story lines, time shifts and -- the greatest sin of all -- POV changes that occur mid chapter. (and without the little double carriage returns, mind you.)
AND WELCOME to the land of Theorrey. It's a very, very.....very, complicated little world run by a benevolent ever-young Queen Idony and a host of corrupt nobility called Thoerrean Raj, secured by an army of militant blue-hair beings called the Wode and supplied by an enslaved race of feline humanoids called the Felidae. And that's just scratching the surface.
BUT! This could be pulled together, the makings of a great series are here. I can taste it...I promise, the elements are muddled by horrific writing. But they are there! Also, since this is defined as erotica, I would be remiss in not clapping Ms. Grace on the back for some badass sex scenes. They're hot! They don't really add much in the way of story, in fact a couple were ill placed at best. But it's a nice side diversion to the chore of reading this story.
There are a thousand other sins in this book too. (Mainly that her characters, as likable and complicated as they may be, all suffer from schizophrenia too. What motivates these characters is less defined than the wind.) But I thought I would dismiss critiquing those and cut strait to the tumor that's killing this series - the writing.
Geared for Pleasure has an interesting delivery, one main story arc divided into two separate but interlocking stories. The story line, characters and world are continuous from one story to the next without pause. However the emphasis on the two different heroes and heroines in each novella shifts without ever losing sight of the main objective – find the Queen. I found it to be like the devices used in the television show Lost where each episode was a continuation of the major story arc but with a different focus giving you another point of view as well as more clues to solve the mystery – ‘Where is the Queen?”. Like a great television series or movie franchise where the characters capture your imagination and the mystery is intricate and ever evolving and the action is strategically placed but dynamic, this book takes you on an episodic journey that leaves you satisfied at each juncture yet wanting to know more and waiting for the next book. You almost wish there were coming attractions at the very end.
Both novellas are tight and filled with passion, romance and action. Ms. Grace has created an ingenious world filled with magic and unique characters. The mystery that surrounds each leg of the journey is slowly peeled away with surprising reveals. The dialogue and action distinctly convey a marvelous and sumptuous feast of world building, mystery and mythology. Dare and Bohdan have found each other and their love is resplendent. Seraphina and Cyrus are now together and their passion is fiery. Each hero and heroine are individually clever, singular, intelligent, loyal and courageous. Together they are unstoppable and their mission clear - find the Queen!
Rich character, colorful world full of action and sizzling with heat, Rachel Grace is the next Kresley Cole!
This two-story book is a mix of magic, alchemy, clockwork, steampunk and romance that caught me from page one, so I guess I'll start by saying I can't wait for the next book! The world was amazingly detailed without being bombarded by a lot of backstory. The author did an extraordinary job showing the vivid bits and pieces of every character until I felt as if I knew them all intimately, could picture them clearly in my head, and feel what they felt.
The main characters were solid on their own, but then the writer gave them an extraordinary supporting cast. The colorful and very very different world (this stuff is original and I don't believe I've ever read anything quite like it) combined with exceptional writing = total awesomeness.
And did I mention that the leading men were broken, yet gorgeous and strong? I mean, how do you pull that off? Well, this author did it and did it well. In fact, I can honestly declare that I am now jealous of fictional women and covetous of their men!
To sum up Geared for Pleasure in a word, or more like six words: Original, well plotted and strongly executed.
I started this book with a set mind that I would give it away to a friend, never to see it again, so that I could make room on my shelves. That is no longer the case, and it has found its own spot on my Keeper Shelf.
This book took me places I didn't expect to be taken, what with the title, cover and placement in the romance section of the bookstore. I was pleasantly surprised and excited as I read. It kept my attention and I thought that the plot was very interesting. Loved both of the stories held within and especially found myself endlessly amused and entertained by Phina.
Bookclub pick. I really liked it. This genre (Steampunk) is still very new to me. The novel is broken up into two different stories and I was worried at first, but they are actually had the same characters. I thought they flowed well into each other. I will read more from this author.
Quick & Dirty: A steampunk fantasy world fraught with lots of danger and “steamy” love scenes.
Opening Sentence: Dare lifted a hand to her temple and grimaced at the rough and unpleasantly aromatic material of her woven glove.
The Review:
Geared for Pleasure is like a boat rallying against a storm that cannot be denied. From machines never before dreamed of in their world, to the inevitability of passion; each one is a force unto nature that you can either join in or get swept away. The epic feel of this book leaves a reader’s spirits high with the joy and rightness of fighting for what you believe in.
In the world of Theorrey, Queen Idony the Ever Young rules with two people perpetually at her side: Dare the Chalice and Cyrus the Sword. These positions are for life and are the queen’s companions and protectors. When a plot to overthrow the queen is put into action, Dare and Cyrus are set out to look for help. The first story, Earthly Desires, is about Dare’s journey whereas Fiery Temptations, is more about Cyrus’s.
This book is set up in such a way that there are two stories in one. Each story is about one couple and a single perspective but the overall plot is ongoing between the two. Reading them individually would not make any sense. Therefore, I will review them initially as separate stories.
Earthly Desires
Dare has been sent by secret messenger to seek out the ship, Deviant, and her captain for help. Unfortunately, Dare is kidnapped and knocked out cold before finding her guide. She awakens to find herself aboard a submarine that doubles as a brothel/gambling casino. For someone deathly afraid of large bodies of water, her imprisonment is two-fold. The only good thing about it is the ruggedly handsome captain, Bodhan.
Bodhan knows that the girl he saves is more than what she seems. For a man that prides himself on knowing secrets, he finds himself at a loss. She is strong yet naive, sensual yet innocent, and though she appears to be a half-breed Wode, she carries herself far above her apparent station. There is instant attraction between them. But can Bodhan find it in himself to trust someone so obviously full of secrets? Will Dare choose to honor her duty to her queen or will she give it up for the chance of happiness with Bodhan?
Dare suffers from guilt. Bodhan suffers from loss of control. But can the two find a way for all parties to come out on top? Little do they realize that they both are fighting for the same cause; Queen Idony.
Fiery Temptations
Cyrus was sent out on a secret mission but was side-tracked by a beautiful vixen named Seraphina. The one time he loses his focus and gives into passion, he is captured and sold into slavery. After escaping, his only thoughts were of revenge against the woman he once burned for. But fire cannot be so easily dowsed.
Seraphina is feeling guilty; not an emotion she is familiar with. She realizes too late that an innocent favor ended up causing so much damage. When the crew of the Deviant finds the lost Cyrus, she is forced to face the consequences of her actions, no matter how little her overall part was. But maybe being dominated by a man such as Cyrus is not the hardship it appears to be.
They are forced to find a compromise if they are to work together to find the missing Queen Idony, even if it means that Seraphina finds herself taking Cyrus’s “punishment” in the bedroom. They are both drawn to one another as though by fate. And we all know that fate will not be denied. Can Cyrus forgive her past offenses or will it remain forever between them? Can Seraphina bend her independent spirit in favor of sharing a love that she never thought could be hers?
Though the emphasis may be on the couples, the overall story is quite intriguing. The world of Theorrey is full of fiefdoms and loyal, though slightly shady, subjects. The queen is a woman that is eternal and can see events yet to pass, including her abduction. She counteracts this with people that she can trust and rely on to save her. It gives the feel of much larger players moving pieces on a worldwide chess board; fortifying areas while seeking out the weaknesses within the other’s strategy. I look forward to seeing such a match unfold in future books.
Both stories are full of very sensual and erotic play. Though the scenes are “steamy”, they do not overshadow the main plot. I really enjoyed how each story was told from a new perceptive while not losing the continuity of the storyline. Even the steampunk aspects are used to enhance the world and its inhabitants rather than replace them. There are many ways for this series to continue, but I am hoping for something with the seriously hot and short-tempered Captain Amaranthe of the airship, Deviant.
Though I realize that with most erotic-stamped books, what they lack in plot they make up for with sex, this book is not one of them. It is everything that I could hope for in an erotic steampunk. I look forward to reading the next installment of the Elemental Steam series.
Notable Scene:
She released the second button, knowing she wore nothing beneath but a thin muslin band to restrain her breasts. Would he be shocked by it? As aroused as he had been in this very room, when she’d worn nothing but a strategically wrapped scarf? When he’d had her bound? Perhaps he would take her breasts into his mouth again, or change his mind about whatever it was he was trying to do.
Perhaps, in lieu of that, he would be distracted enough to remove himself from her path of escape. She could return to the safety of the guard barracks below and wait to surface.
The idea was not as appealing as she’d imagined it would be.
Need. There was no disguising how each newly revealed inch of her flesh increased his arousal. The vulnerability beneath his desire.
Bodhan’s mercurial behavior made Dare waver as she unhooked the last button. What was he really after? The truth he’d said. But what truth? That she wasn’t to be trusted? That she was Wode? Or that he could resist the feelings she could clearly sense. Feelings she shared.
The Elemental Steam Series:
1. Geared for Pleasure
FTC Advisory: Penguin/Berkley graciously provided me with a copy of Geared for Pleasure. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review. The only payment received came in the form of hugs and kisses from my little boys.
This is my very first foray into a story with a steampunk theme and I have to admit being a little bit lost in some ways. In Geared For Pleasure we enter into the alternate world of Theorrey where old and new are combined in a very intriguing way. Told in two separate but related stories, we meet Queen Idony’s two shield guards, Dare and Cyrus who are the Queen’s Chalice and Sword; basically her protectors, confidants, companions; her right hands, so to speak. We follow them as they venture out in search of their missing Queen and realize that this is not just an ordinary kidnapping.
Earthly Desires
When Queen Idony goes missing Dare receives a somewhat cryptic message that tasks her to leave the security and comfort of Queen’s Hill to seek out a ship called the Deviant. Unfortunately, her very sheltered life on Queen’s Hill did not adequately prepare her for the world outside. She’s in awe of what she sees and as she’s taking it all in, she’s attacked, injected with a sedative and taken. When she awakens she finds herself on the Siren, a brothel of sorts-but all is not as it really seems. This is where she meets Bodhan, the Siren’s captain, who is very intrigued by the petite blue-haired beauty. As Dare gets to know Bodhan and the secrets of the Siren she realizes that he may be her only hope in her quest for locating the Deviant and fulfilling her mission to find the Queen.
Fiery Temptations
Cyrus has been sent on many missions by the Queen over the years since he became the Queen’s Sword and he’s done them without question and always successfully. Until he’s sent to meet someone aboard the Siren to deliver a very important package, that is. While there he meets the fiery beauty, Seraphina, who is much, much more than she appears. Seraphina is Felidae and when she turns on the charm, no man can resist her, Cyrus included. In order to pay off a debt, she agrees to drug Cyrus so that the man she owes can retrieve something in Cyrus’s possession. But when Cyrus is kidnapped, Seraphina unwittingly becomes another player in the hunt for the kidnapped Queen Idony.
The first story starts out a bit slow and having not read a “steampunk” themed book before, I was a bit confused. It’s clear that this is an alternate world. It felt old with its descriptions of open markets, the clothing and people walking everywhere. At the same time, I was utterly fascinated with the very unique mechanized robotic bugs upon which Dare receives the message that sends her away from Queen’s Hill and lands her aboard the Siren. Additionally, there is a submarine type ship and a flying ship which I imagined to be kind of like a blimp but with sails-all things that are well known today, but are truly fascinating, though seemingly out of place as they are described herein in this world’s context. I found myself pulled into the world and I wanted more descriptions of these fantastical things.
Once we move into Fiery Temptations, we’ve added quite a bit of characters to the mix as they try to decipher the clues to Queen Idony’s disappearance. They are all really interesting and bring much to the story. Things really pick up here as we get a lot of information and learn some secrets. There is action, adventure and a continued sense that if they would just look close enough, all would be revealed. I was really pulled in to the storytelling here. Ms. Grace does a great job and her writing is very descriptive.
The one thing that didn’t sit well with me has to do with the some of the sex scenes. Yes, this is an erotic romance, but the sex should fit in. With Dare, I felt her jumping into bed so quickly and easily with Bodhan a bit unrealistic for a character who is depicted as sheltered and untouched. And there is a scene in Cyrus’s book where he and Seraphina are hiding in a closet and they start going at it. This one, especially, seemed unnecessary and gratuitous. In the case of Dare and Bodhan, other than their rush to sex their relationship as a whole was very believable. With Cyrus and Seraphina a previous encounter is inferred so when they get together so quickly after they are reunited it’s not as unlikely or unexpected.
The last 1/3 of Cyruss book is probably the best of the whole book and was really where I finally felt like I had a clue and understood what was happening. A lot of questions are answered and we get hints of possible storylines to come. Some of the secrets revealed, though, actually prompt more questions which totally frustrated me, but in a good way. The author leaves us teetering on the verge of satisfaction, but not quite getting there which I guess in some ways is appropriate for an erotic romance. She definitely left me wanting more. I’m not sure this was the best book for me to venture into the “steampunk” genre, but I really am quite intrigued now with this alternate reality with its old world feel coupled with new world inventions. This entry is really just a teaser and I look forward to seeing where the author plans to take us.
I can’t count the number of times I picked up and put this book down since I got it. I was intrigued by the steampunk world, but could never really seem to find a time when I was in the mood to read it. I would get through the first couple pages and lose interest. I have to say, I wish I would have forced myself to read it sooner!!
This book actually has two stories: the first is about the Queen’s companion Dare. Dare is on a mission to find out who kidnapped the Queen and replaced her with a doppelganger. But her plans to find a specific airship are thwarted and instead she finds herself prisoner on a “Pleasure” submarine. Bodhan runs the sub and Dare instantly intrigues him, and he works hard to not only seduce her, but also uncover all her secrets.
I didn’t think this first story as much as the second. I don’t know if it was because so much of the world was being unveiled slowly, or because Dare and Bodham took some time to meet up, but either way it seemed to drag a bit in the beginning. Once things picked up, I found myself so entrenched in the story I had a hard time putting the book down. I wanted to know what was going on, who was who, and how they were going to find the Queen. It wasn’t until Dare and Bodhan leave the pleasure ship that the book started really turning around for me, but once it did, there was no stopping the awesomeness.
The sexy times between Dare and Bodham was so to develop, but so smokin’ hot. The sexual tension between them was done incredibly well, and I loved their little dance around each other as they moved toward a relationship. I hope we get to see a lot more of them as the series continues.
One of the things I also really enjoyed was that although the book was two separate novellas, the story was seamless overall. I didn’t feel like I missed anything when we changed from Dare/Bodham’s story to Phina/Cyrus’s story. The book follows the same crew of people once Dare and Bodham join up with the correct airship, and I hope we continue to follow this group of people as the story continues.
The second story follows Cyrus, the Queen’s sword. He has been through hell and back trying to find her, the worst of his problems: having to trust Phina, the woman who seduced him and left him to be kidnapped by his enemies. But the Queen trusts Phina, who was unaware of the plot behind Cyrus’ kidnapping. The tension between these two is enough to drive them both insane, if they aren’t killed by the Queen’s enemies first…
I adored Phina and Cyrus. Phina was the kind of heroine who could take care of herself, she didn’t need any man to come in and rescue her. But it also didn’t stop her from dreaming of that man. She has never had anyone to rely on, nor has she realized she wanted someone to rely on. I loved the vulnerability that Cyrus brought out in Phina, and the lengths that he went to for her. I can’t count the number of times he almost died for her, and he was more than willing to do it time and time again. They were a great couple that danced around their messy past before realizing that without each other, they both weren’t as strong.
These two had some holy amazing sexy times. They had angry sex, make-up sex, claiming sex. You name it, they had it…. But it also fit so well with their characters. I never felt as if it was just thrown in for the sake of it. They were great together both physically and emotionally.
The world-building in this story is incredible. While it took me awhile to get a good understanding of the world as a whole, as each detail was revealed, there was more and more that drew me in. I can’t wait to read more from Grace, see where the journey leads next, find out who took the Queen, where she is, and why her palace was always a little like a prison.
All in all this story was so engaging and fun to read. The first story built slowly and wasn’t as quick to reign in my attention, but once I was hooked, I couldn’t put it down. The sexy times were hot throughout the book, the world-building was just amazing and the characters (main and secondary alike) were all wonderful to read. I can’t wait to see where the series goes next, and get answers to my millions of questions! I give Geared for Pleasure a B
Synopsis, The world of Theorrey runs like a well-oiled machine. The elements are in balance, passion is tamed, and the young queen is the heartbeat of it all. But in these two all-new stories of elemental steam, nothing is ever as it seems. My Review. (by Debbie Talbot Guest Reviewer for Literal Addiction) When I received the book Geared for Pleasure by Rachel Grace to review for Literal Addiction I was cautiously excited. I had tried to read another “steampunk” book before and had problems with the amount of focus that was put on the mechanical descriptions and world building. So having read and loved many of Rachel Grace’s books written as R.G. Alexander I jumped in and put aside my worries and ended up fascinated by it. I stayed up most of the night reading and came to the conclusion that Rachel Grace has started a new genre of books called “ Steamsmut” and I am excited to know where is goes from here. Geared for Pleasure is set up similar to Possess Me her 1st Bone Daddy book. It has 2 stories with 2 separate Heroes & Heroines but with a continuous storyline. I loved that the transition between the stories is seamless but you still have a different feeling to it. The 1st story is Earthly Desires. We meet Dare and I found out pretty quickly that this wasn’t a normal “steampunk” book. The world building was so seamless that you didn’t even notice it. I felt like I was right there with Dare while she is amazed by the world around her. Dare is a sheltered young woman and The Queen’s Chalice. She also has an empathic gift that has been hidden from all except the Queen and her Sword Cyrus who is like a brother to Dare. She was raised to be the Queens Chalise, her companion and protector but she also became her close friend. Being an empath she knew instantly that there was something wrong when an automation was being passed off as her Queen.and knows what others are feeling. She believes she is prepared for the mission she is given by her Queen. Cyrus has been missing for months and now the Queen is gone and replaced with an automation. It is up to Dare to find the ship The Deviant and enlist the captain’s help to find Queen Idony. She is told to trust no one but the captain of the Deviant. When she is kidnapped and then saved by Bodhan the captain of The Siren she is tempted to trust not only her mission, but her heart and body to him too. Bodhan is the captain of the underwater ship The Siren. He is protective of the women who work on his ship selling pleasure. So when Dare falls into his lap and he realizes what has happened to her keeping her safe becomes his priority. While on their epic journey Bodhan shows Dare what “Earthly Desires” are all about. The 2nd story is Fiery Temptations and it is about Cyrus the Queens Sword and Seraphina a Felidae woman that is also working aboard the Siren. Since by this point in the book you have met a large part of the cast of characters I thought it might slow down a bit but it didn’t. You are thrust into the adventure as we learn more and more about Theorrey. The story was even hotter than the first, but it didn’t lack for emotion either. Phina is a spitfire, one of those characters that just burns up the page and leaves you pissed and excited all at the same time. Reading as she and Cyrus try to find their HEA while also trying to figure out what to do to find the Queen had me up most of the night. At one point I wasn’t sure that it would be possible. Phina interaction with her family was a side of her that I hadn’t expected and I shed a few tears while reading it. As Phina and Cyrus’s story comes to an end and they get their version of “ Happily Ever After” the main story has a long way to go it seems before the journey ends. Rachel Grace has created a world that I would love to spend a whole lot more time in. I am so glad that the story has so much more to tell and I know it will end up being a Epic Adventure in Steamsmut! I am looking forward to finding out what happens with all the people we met. I gave this book 4&1/2 star and will be awaiting the continuation of this awesome story.
The world of Theorrey is ruled by the much beloved Queen Idony the Every Young. When she goes missing, her closest friend and protector, Dare, sets out to find her. But Dare is unfamiliar with the world outside the castle walls and soon finds herself at the mercy of a wickedly handsome man. Bodhan is captain of the Siren, a underwater vessel that caters to a man's carnal desires. After rescuing Dare from some unsavory people, Bodhan finds himself captivated by the indigo haired beauty. Bodhan has a limited time to prove to Dare that he'll not only treat her body to unimaginable pleasure but that he's capable of keeping her heart and her secrets safe.
The detail that went into the setting and people in this story was amazing. I could picture myself walking through the market of Center City, looking over all the trinkets and food that's being offered for sale. I loved it and was in awe of the unique, and often really cool, gadgets and machines that were a vital part of this world.
When it came to explaining how Theorrey worked, I found myself getting confused. With all the politics of who doesn't like who and who is behind what schemes, I found myself having more questions than answers. I also wasn't convinced that Dare and Bodhan really loved each other by the end of this story. Sure, the sex was hot, although I thought Dare jumped into bed way too quickly for someone with zero experience in that area, I had a difficult time feeling there was anything substantial to their relationship. I liked all the fighting and action at the end that leads into the next story but the highlight was taking the tour around parts of Theorrey and being able to see things like an underwater bordello, hologram projecting bugs, and weapons that cold do some serious damage. My rating: 3/5
Fiery Temptations
This story starts right where Earthly Desires leaves off. Cyrus, the Queen's Sword, is recovering after being abducted and abused. He feels he should despise Seraphina, a feline-human hybrid, for playing a part in his disappearance but his body has an altogether different reaction to the fierce vixen. The usual fun loving Phina is racked with guilt for what happened to Cyrus. She knows she deserves his hatred but is surprised to see heated passion in his eyes. As they set out to find a stolen dagger and save their missing queen, Cyrus and Phina will work past the anger to form a relationship they'll do anything to hold on to.
As in the first story, I loved all the work the author put into describing the characters and setting. I was easily able to imagine what everything looked like while I was reading and it made for a more enjoyable read. Yet as much as I appreciated and liked taking a vivid tour of Theorrey, the characters are what really captured my attention during the second half of this book.
Cyrus is close to the queen and feels he's failed her. Phina is also feeling some guilt because of the role she played in Cyrus' capture. As you may guess, things are rough between them at first but there's always a powerful spark between them. Both have surprising secrets of their own and each has a sad story to tell. Cyrus is trained to show restraint and calm while Phina is a thief and loves to have a good time. On the surface they may seem to be opposites but they are unquestionably loyal to those they love and together, set the pages on fire. Their love making is as intense as their feelings for one another. A really fantastic couple and the main reasons why I liked this book. My rating: 4/5
Cyrus, Phina, Dare, Bodhan and the rest of the crew are still searching for the queen and I look forwad to seeing where their adventures lead them in the next book. Geared for Pleasure took me deeper into the world of Steampunk than I've ever been before and if other books in the genre are as good as this one, I need to pick up more. My overall rating: 3.5/5
“Geared For Pleasure” by Rachel Grace (R.G. Alexander) is a delightful set of linked novellas. “Earthly Desires” introduces Dare (Demeter) who is the Queen’s Chalice known as the Senedal. She is a key member of the elite shield guard of the queen despite her shorter than normal stature and lack of personal ties to anyone other than her queen and her counterpart, Cyrus, the Queen’s Sword known as the Arendal. An assignment from her monarch causes her to embark on a fantastical adventure that will utilize her hidden ability to sense the true emotions of those around her while introducing her to an amazing array of individuals.
Bodhan is not quite sure what to make of the feisty female whose indigo eyes and hair proclaims her as one of the elite and despised Wode but whose stature reflects her half-breed status. His ship, the Siren, is a unique brothel that is able to travel under the water and is populated with intriguing females who provide pleasure for the right price but Dare doesn’t want to join their ranks. A remarkable Felid named Seraphina becomes a questionable ally as Dare tries to cope with her intense and unexpected attraction to the charismatic Bodhan even as she strives to complete her mission to find the ship Defiant and complete the mission for her queen.
The fascinating saga continues with the novella “Fiery Temptations” and highlights Seraphina, plus Dare’s missing counterpart, Cyrus, as well as the mysterious Captain Nerida Amaranthe and a remarkable airship. There are more magical mechanical marvels revealed as a mysterious individual named Khepri continues to guide the disparate individuals who have a common goal of aiding Queen Idony. Seraphina and Cyrus have a tortuous past which includes a searingly carnal relationship which ended badly but must find a way to work together to fulfill their respective commissions. Their passion for their quests is more than equaled by their passion for each other but circumstances may prevent them from ever reaching a comfortable relationship.
This was a wonderfully entertaining read combining the magical marvels of steampunk with the author’s facility for penning wonderfully spicy scenes. The heat is a little milder than readers are used to with this author but this is more than compensated for by the sweeps of imagination that are displayed in this intriguing tale. The scenes are described vividly with such great imagery that one can visualize the intriguing world of gears and magic. The tension between the primary couples in each novella is a believable counterpoint to the overall quest and a nice blend of romance and sensuality. The villains are a bit two-dimensional but that is probably because they are still primarily shadowy figures at this point. A great start to the series, can’t wait for the sequel.
Rachel Grace (also known as R.G. Alexander) intertwines hot, sizzling romance with Steampunk, a popular sub-genre of science fiction that centers around machinery, gears, clockwork and alternate histories. Steampunk's growing popularity can be seen in current fashion, art, and, of course, the publishing field, where stories often meld machinery, fantasy and Victorian sensibilities to create something completely new. Geared for Pleasure consists of two novellas. Each story arc involves the missing Queen of Theorrey but focuses on different characters. Earthly Desires is about Dare, the Queen's Chalice (her protector) and closest friend. When Queen Idony goes missing, Dare takes it upon herself to find her beloved Queen and companion. Unfortunately, because Dare isn't used to the outside world, she finds out just how difficult life can be for someone who is so sheltered.
She is tricked, tied up and mysteriously led by a mechanical bug to freedom. Bodhan (our dashing and very hot hero) is the captain of a mechanical underwater vessel called the Siren. When he meets Dare, he feels compelled to protect her … and perhaps take her to bed. These two scorched up the pages. I don't think it was "love" between them, but their chemistry and heat were undeniable. Bodhan is the perfect dashing, "tall, dark and handsome" hero who knows his way in and out of a woman's bed. Dare is spirited and, as I followed her adventures, I found myself rooting for her to find not only her Queen, but also a partner.
Fiery Temptations is about Phina and Cyrus (both of whom we meet in Earthly Desires). Unlike Bodhan and Dare, these two have a history, which gives the story (and their romance) a certain depth. What I found interesting was that their past was not all good — turns out Phina is partly responsible for Cyrus (the Queen's Sword) getting captured and tortured. Now, with Cyrus' sacred dagger lost and Phina moved by his suffering, Phina and Cyrus need each other, but can they really set aside the past and everything between them?
The bedroom scenes between these two are reflected in the novella's title. They were fiery and they were scorching … sometimes at the most inopportune times! Like when they're hiding in a closet, and suddenly the heat rises and … well, you get the picture.
The two novellas are sexy romances at heart, so the plot is mainly used to push the main characters together. Rachel Grace has a good thing going with the Elemental Steam series. I can envision a full-length Theorrey novel with real world building and even more Steampunk aspects. If Grace plans on releasing more, I would definitely give this series a try, especially if you adore pleasure, passion, and Steampunk mechanical creatures!
I love this book so frickin much, I can not even tell you!
As I began the first story: Earthly Desires, I was drawn in by the description of Dare's first experience with the masses. I felt like I was standing right next to her, experiencing for the first time the wonder and chaos of Centre City. Sent on a mission by her beloved queen, and disguised as a boy, she is quickly tricked by a nefarious woman and her goons. When she awakens in captivity, she manages to free herself and is once again on the move lead only by a mysterious mechanical bug. The journey that follows is full of rich descriptions and exciting adventure. As Dare attempts to fullfill her quest she is torn between wonder and confusion as she tries to reconcile the technology that she encounters with the fact that no one, save the palace, should possess it. And she struggles with feelings for the mysterious Captain Bodhan, whom she is sure is working towards a nefarious purpose.
Not just an adventure, this story is the ultimate love story. Two people destined to be together, before they even meet. Their love is passionate and true.
In the second story: Fiery Temptations, we finally get to learn more about Seraphina. We meet Phina in the first story and I was intrigued by her character. I was happy that we would learn more about her and Cyrus, who was also introduced in the first story. Unlike Dare and Bodhan, Cyrus and Phina have a history. One that makes their relationship fraught with misunderstandings and outright lies. There are huge hurdles to over come. Phina was complicit in the abduction of Cyrus, never realizing he would be drugged and tortured. They have strong feelings for each other but there is much to get past. Again this is all set against a rich backdrop of creatures both mechanical and alive, and the drama of the disappearance of the Queen.
Both stories are filled with passion and adventures that are a feast for the senses. When I finished the book I felt as though I had been on a grand journey! I am excited to read more about the wonderful and exotic world of Theorrey. Rachel Grace has captivated me with the best Steampunk novel I have ever read!
I give this book my most enthusiastic 5 stars. (If I could give it more stars I would) And it goes on my Keeper Shelf! It will definitely be one of my favorite books to pull out again and again each time I need to escape from reality and enter another world.
So I am not huge into the steampunk world. It’s not that I don’t like it I just haven’t really read any of it yet. Lol I really didn’t have any ideas what this book was about when I started reading it. I’ve been doing this a lot lately and I like it. Since I have no idea of the plot it makes the story more exciting for me. Ms. Grace’s delve into the world of “clockworky steampunkitude” as she calls it was lots of fun. I really enjoyed the world building around Theorrey. She even has a map on her website to help you visualize if you are so inclined. I also liked that this book is broken into two separate stories. I love when authors do that. I get to get closer to the characters that way.
First up in Earthly Desires is Dare and Bodhan. As the Queen’s Challace Dare is tasked with hunting her down when she goes missing. Bodhan own an underwater brothel (cool huh?). Dare wakes up to find herself on Bodhan’s ship and doesn’t know who to trust. The sparks fly between the two of them but Dare is innocent in more ways than one. The tension between these two was ridiculous. I loved seeing all the things through Dare’s eyes. Her life in the palace prevented her from knowing the vast array of technology in the world. I can’t say much more without giving away plot points but this is a hot sweet story that leads nicely into the next story.
In Fiery Temptations we learn more about Seraphina AKA Phina and Cyrus. Cyrus is the Queen’s Sword and was betrayed by Phina early on. This one made me cry, laugh, smile, and laugh some more. Ms. Grace did an amazing job portraying the emotion between these characters. I cannot wait for the next in the series so we can read about Captain Amaranthe (I think her story will be my favorite) and Aurora Steele.
One of my favorite things about this world is that the women were based on some of Rachel Grace’s friends. Aurora Steel is Crystal Jordan, Seraphina Felidae is Feisty, Captain Amaranthe is Eden Bradley/Eve Berlin, and Dare Senedal is Ms Rachel Grace AKA RG Alexander herself. It was fun seeing the authors come to life in a new and different way. Great way to start a series and new name for Ms. Grace!
So, I don't usually write a review, but I just had to for this book. I like Gail Carriger and I like Meljean Brook, but I love Rachel Grace.
Her world building is so intricate and detailed, the steampunk machines are unexpected and have that flavor of the fantastic that you get with H.G. Wells. Tiny spoiler-stealth airship. Just sayin'. I kept being amazed at the creativity of this world.
Then there's this whole segregated society and political structure, and a serious undergound element that you find in all great steampunk. That really filled out the world for me. It's not a historical with steampunk gadgets. Geared is a fantasy world that is totally integrated and infused with steampunkiness:) Delicious!
The characters are really rich and have a lot of complex back story that I can tell is going come out even more in the future books in this series. The underground has tons of potential since it was kind of hinted at in this book and some of the main characters have origins there, so I can't wait to get into that in the future books. At least I hope it's a series, cuz damn what a cliff hanger!
And then there's the sex... Umm, is it hot in here? Yup! The sex scenes are smokin'! I have read plenty of erotic romance. Seriously, lots. These were some of the best I've ever come across, and I started out reading erotic romance from Ellora's Cave Publishing years ago! The scene where they're hiding and Phina...you'll find out. ;-)
I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes steamy steampunk with great characters and world building.
A missing Princess, a sheltered warrior, political intrigue, and since it is a romance a sexy hero. Oh and plenty of action!
Geared for Pleasure is split into two stories though the second follows the first without skipping a beat. An interesting way to introduce more characters and bring the story arc to a close. Well as closed as you are going to get, Grace sets us up for the next book with her last couple of pages. Just a nice little tease to leave you hanging.
Two stories you say? Well if there are two then there has to be a favorite, and how can you not pick Dare and Bodhan’s story. Could it be because you are introduced to them first? Or because you get to see this new, slightly scary, world through Dare’s eyes as she experiences many things for the first time? Or maybe because Bodhan is so irresistible, more to him than meets the eye. Whatever it is they are great together and that chemistry pulls you in.
This is one of those books that can fall into a handful of genres. Science Fiction, easy. Paranormal, yeah that too. Romance, oh it defiantly has two great love stories. Steampunk, plenty of gadgets here. And Erotic, you might need to fan yourself. Rachel Grace has blended all of that together and created a book with a storyline strong enough it wouldn’t need any of the erotic stuff to still be considered great. This author has some serious talent.
Ignore the title and subtitle of this book. It gives the impression of Steampunk erotica. Instead, this is a high fantasy adventure romance ....with a fair amount of graphic sex. It's well-written and plotted, the characters are interesting and complex, and the story moves quickly and logically. My only complaint is that it left me wanting more - I can't wait for the next installment!
“I believe I hit him with a gold dart.....but in the heat of the moment you can never be sure.”
Usually I start off my reviews with a couple of paragraphs summarizing up the book to give a little overview of what I’m reviewing but with Geared for Pleasure I find I can’t do that. I will start by saying I love steampunk and always jump at the chance to review a book with any steampunk qualities which is why when I read that this book is part of a series called Elemental Steam I jumped to review it. There are a lot of steampunk qualities in this book and I would categorize it as steampunk romance and that is the main thing that I really loved about it. To get back to my first sentence I can’t give an overview of this book because I am still so confused about what the heck was going on and am still trying to figure out characters and the world Mrs. Grace has created.
There are two stories in this book which I found confusing because the book could have kept going instead of stopping and I would have never noticed. I actually think it would have been a much better book without splitting it into two separate stories. From what I understand this book takes place in a world called Theorrey and I only know this because I read the back cover. From what I gathered this world is ruled by a young queen and the two main characters Dare and Cyrus are the Queen’s Chalice and Sword as well as her best friends. Someone has taken the Queen and Dare and Cyrus are on a mission to find her and get her back in power. After three hundred pages that’s really all I understand about Theorrey.
I did love the characters that I met and especially Dare and Bodhan. I really wish that I could have spent more time getting to know all the characters and letting myself get lost in this fascinating world but honestly I spent 80% of my time going “What in the world is going on here” or “where are they going now”. If I had had a very small introduction or a glossary of terms and/or characters I think I would have liked this book much better then I did.
I found myself very frustrated at this book and at the same time very intrigued. I still can’t figure out if I loved it or hated it nor can I figure out if I’ll try to read the next book in the series. I really hope the next book spends more time introducing the reader to this crazy, wonderful and highly confusing group of characters and land of Theorrey. I have a ton of questions still about everything and am thinking of rereading it again just to see if I can get some answers which makes me question my feelings for the book even more.
I kept seeing this book whenever I walked into a store so I finally ILL'd it through work. I thought the writing was fairly strong-ish, but the flow and plot of the book was very convoluted. I'm not sure why Grace made the decision to divide the book into two separate stories instead of combining them into one story, with A & B plot arcs, or separating them completely.
It would have been more interesting for me to see the entirety of Dare's journey, i.e. interacting with the real Queen, discovering the false queen, and then moving forward with her journey. The reader is forced to accept Dare as a reliable narrator since we don't actually see anything that happens prior to her kidnapping. Cyrus's & Seraphina's story also begins in the middle and, for Seraphina especially, this is a disservice to the characters. When we first meet Seraphina in Dare's story, "Earthly Desires," she's not really presented in a positive light, but we're supposed to immediately switch to her side when "Fiery Temptations" begins. In addition, Cyrus wails a lot about feeling guilty and not preparing Dare properly, but, again, the reader has a hard time knowing what's self-hatred and what's reality.
Geared for Pleasure ends with a great many loose ends and the world-building was sufficiently strong enough that I'd read the next book in this series, if there is one. There's no information on Grace's website about a second title and given that Geared was released in March, I'd expect to see something in the pipeline by now. A comment on her Facebook wall says that she's planning on writing more, but whether Grace already has a contract is anybody's guess. So if unresolved endings make you crazy, skip this one.
